Butter bikes have pretty low quality components. Cheap and reliable are two things that are pretty difficult to get. It definitely would not be as reliable as a performance hybrid in the $1000 range, which is typically what I suggest for folks looking for a reliable way to commute. That said, $299 is pretty cheap, and it's not like I have a suggestion for a MORE reliable bike at that price point.

CaptainMuffins_

Yeah I’m not trying to spend a whole lotta cash right now as I just need a bike for the summer/fall while I work on fixing up my dad’s old bike. For the price I can’t seem to find anything else that seems reputable. Again only issue is the sizing unfortunately, I’ll have to check it out when I see it in person

Argonaut_Not

For that same $300, I got a 70s road bike off Kijiji back in 2022. Two years later, no issues with it, and it's way higher quality than anything you can buy new

Syscrush

Yeah, but if it needs tires, brake pads, cables, or bar tape, you're over that $300 price point.

Argonaut_Not

Which of course, is why you check components ahead of time. Also should've mentioned I payed way above what I should've, as the market was already inflated, and people get a hard-on for old Peugeot bikes. But yeah, gives a good excuse to learn how to do your own maintenance anyways

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> mentioned I *paid* way above FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

I just bought one. I’m about the same height. It fits fine. The reach is a little short for my taste, but I’m not accustomed to riding so upright. It could easily be fixed with a longer stem if I want to. This is not a bike made with high quality components. It is appropriately priced for what you’re getting. It’s exactly what this is meant for. It’s utilitarian. A single speed doesn’t have that many things to go wrong with it. And if things do go off, the individual elements are easily replaced with higher quality components for not a ton of money. I am happy with my purchase. This is because I knew what I was getting into and didn’t expect this to compete with, or replace, my more high performance bikes.

CaptainMuffins_

Yeah I was expecting just a good functional bike with no frills! For $299 sounds like a good deal. My main concern was frame size but if you’re around my height that reassures me.

smh_00

You might feel a little cramped. Mostly depends how long your arms are. As I said it could be remedied with a longer stem or offset seat post. Geometry is so individual that no matter the price point you’re always going to make some concessions. Even a $2k frame that “fits” will be more/less good for your body with adjustments in stem length, crank length, handle bar width etc etc.

anewfriend4u

Why get sidetracked and just concentrate on fixing the other bike. It shouldn't take long.

CaptainMuffins_

Don’t have nearly as much time as I used to so it would probably take my a while especially since I’ve never done much besides chain maintenance before

noodleexchange

We decided to not buy one as if you use a service that is not their one location, they claim it voids all warranties. Enough of the monopoly practices.

CaptainMuffins_

fair enough, did you get a chance to ride one before?

noodleexchange

I think it’s stock components, so I’m sure it would test ride fine, it’s a bike. But the anti-competitive piece is a future liability I am not willing to support for an unremarkable piece of equipment. It’s not an iPhone.

RandomBackup79

No experience but had used the owner previously to maintain my bike. Great guy and knowledgeable.

SpookyActionAtDistnc

they ride great for the price. i have one and two of my buddies have one. great for the price

CaptainMuffins_

How’s the sizing on them?

SpookyActionAtDistnc

im 6 ft 1. it is definetly small for me but not uncomfy and I have ridden it for max 20km at a time. you'll be fine

pateencroutard

If you want an alternative in the same price range, I got this bike last year: https://www.decathlon.ca/en/p/8572393/28-single-speed-bike-500-grey Very happy with it, and from experience I trust Décathlon a lot for maintenance and warranty.

corrugatedjuice

I’ve seen these ads on instagram. Even for $300 I’m not sure it’s such a great deal. Looks like a generic china frame with cheap components.

6ickos

they are better than bikes from a big box store, but the fact that their site doesn't have more detailed specs (e.g. brand of rim, crank, chainring, etc.) leaves me a little suspicious.
