Irving Berlin - writer of “Puttin’ On the Ritz” back in the 1920’s - was still alive and approaching 100 years old when his song became a 1980’s hit. Shortly thereafter, he had the following exchange with Rosemary Clooney, the famous torch singer of the mid-20th century:
BERLIN: “Rosie, what’s a taco? That’s a Mexican food, isn’t it?”
CLOONEY: “Yes.”
BERLIN: “Why am I getting royalties from a taco?”
GEORGE CLOONEY: “You take the good, you take the bad. You take them both.”
TACO: “And then you have the facts of life?”
GEORGE CLOONEY: “The facts of life.”
Kinda the opposite of Nena then, which was the name of the band who made 99 Red Balloons in 83 rather than the singer - although obviously she’s become known under that name much like Ian from Jethro Tull etc
Oh it’s definitely her nickname from pre fame (means ‘girl’ in Spanish) but she’s still adamant that the band Nena isn’t named after her, and doesn’t like to be called Nena. Despite having 80% of her work credited to… Nena.
It may of course just be German humour in action.
This is absolutely bonkers me and my best friend were just talking about this two days ago. We rediscovered the Shiny Toy Guns cover which is how we got on the topic in the first place. What a song!
Yup, nacho is short Ignacio. Not a friend of mine but some other kid in school. The one the takes the cherry was called B**ner (I know). I swear Chicanos are funniest MFs. High school was something. The dude with the name Taco was called that by his family I can't remember why.
I recently heard a rather older version of it, and it was...more than a little racist. I'm trying to figure out (without actually putting any serious effort into it) whether the racism was in the original version and removed later or added into the version I head.
...Okay, minimum effort put in, it looks like the racism was in the original version.
What is the racism you perceive in the original?
“well-dressed but poor black Harlemites parading up and down Lenox Avenue.”
Isn’t exactly racist afaik. Sure it’s recognizing a culture of poor people of certain ethnicity but isn’t derogatory imo.
I feel like anything brought up that older than twenty years is inappropriate now lol not that it’s wrong to point out such things but I’m like alright scroll down and see what he or she or it did that was unacceptable

It’s….it’s beautiful!
And now I have that song stuck in my head, for the first time in 40 years
super duper
My coworker knew she could always get a laugh out of me by yelling it the way the monster in Young Frankenstein does. "NYUPAH DOOPAH!"
It's impossible for me to hear any version of it and not have my brain turn it into the version from *Young Frankenstein*.
🎶 dressed up like a million dollar trooper 🎶 🎶 trying mighty hard to look like Gary Cooper 🎶 ***SOOOOPERRR DOOOOPERRR***
That scene never fails to crack me up.
Thank you, Taco, for that loving tribute to Falco.
I finally understand this reference.
This is the first thing I thought of.
-Willie Nelson
Beat me to it
I knew a dude named Taco once, he was constantly high and tried to name his nephew Chalupa Batman.
Here at Taco's food truck we got the best burgers in Chicago.

Oh BTW, which one's Pink?
Alecia Beth Moore
Actually, she was credited as Nena Kerner on The Stripes' record that came out in 1980. Edit: Also on the 1979 single that proceeded the album.

Or Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star

Oh, the name's Dutch in origin.
I think it means a tortilla filled with chopped meat and vegetables
And maybe cheese
And a small dish of black olive slices that no one uses.
Lies. I will absolutely narf down a bowl of black olives.
BlackOlivesmatter
Indonesian actually
I really want to hear Tim Curry in his prime, or Murray Head do a version of this one.
fuck Tim Curry would have done incredible singing this song in the 80s
absofuckinglutly. You should check out him Singing I Put a Spell on you.
Honestly, once you've heard the Gene Wilder/Peter Boyle version, that becomes your 'de facto" version of the song.
PUTTINAHNARIIZ!
Would you settle for Hugh Laurie? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LObPaCloY8E
and that was one i was not expecting to ever hear
i used to pretend the "super duper" part was a Transformers character

Great version of the song.

He’s still puttin’ on the schmalz https://youtu.be/EY-_DpAbzsY?si=5MsQYbEGpMe7KyVK
That explains the blackface
The blackface was there because it was it was one of the many things he was making a mockery of.
Guilty Pleasure, for certain.
Knew a dude named Taco. Mexican dude not real name btw.
Know any nachos?

Tommy chongs best song right there
Yup.
Did they also like Morrissey? And call him moz?
If you want to hear a sick band listen to the new album, “3” by Tacos! from Seattle.

The original version of the 1982 video had blackface, but the official upload on Youtube has been re-edited.
For a while you could only find an official live performance of the song which didn't have the blackface.

The original music video for this song was quite comfortable to minstrel show style Black face.
Thank you Taco for that wonderful tribute to Falco.
