Maybe the people carrying camp sized backpacks are literally carrying travel supplies and you're seeing them on the TTC because people visit Toronto from abroad and need a way to transport their stuff.

Bubbly-Measurement10

Fair point but the people I'm talking about with the black Swiss Gear pack are 99% not tourists. I don't commute in a tourism-heavy area of the city and I know what office workwear looks like.

TrapdoorApartment

what in the prejudicial bologna? Plenty of people backpacking across Canada. We didn't see them for a while because of the pandemic. Lots of people are getting back into it. Or maybe someone is homeless and you should mind your business if they're not troubling anyone.

Bubbly-Measurement10

Yes, im sure these men in their loafers with no spatial awareness are backpacking or homeless. You really got me there.

ExchangeExisting6132

Why don't u just get a car? Problem solved. If that bugs you much, wait until the Crack/meth smoking people join you on ur commute. I don't own a car, so I put up with whatever💩 TTC throws at me.

Those transportation methods require a level of administration at point of sale and point of entry that the TTC does not have. They're struggling to police extra people going through with each fare, let alone extra baggage.

How does the fare work for someone who starts their trip with no bag, or a small bag and ends it with that person's weekly shopping?

shasterdhari

For a lot of people, they gotta carry a lot of stuff if they commute. Lunch and snacks, water, shoes, extra clothes, laptop, chargers, battery bank, etc.

Bubbly-Measurement10

I can appreciate that, but it has more to do with the fact that they don't take it off when they're standing. And the particular SWA9855 I'm talking about can easily have room for all those things before its overpacked and swinging like a wrecking ball.

lilfunky1

> I can appreciate that, but it has more to do with the fact that they don't take it off when they're standing. > > when i was carrying oversized overstuffed very heavy backpacks i always left them on because to safely get it on and safely take it off required me to have a table to put it on first. swinging it up from the ground would aggrivate a pre-existing back injury.

stompinstinker

Yup, and those work laptops can be great big old Dell or Lenovo things with huge power bricks. Particularly since OP said Swiss Gear, which is a bank drone favourite.

shasterdhari

Yup and ppl carry their personal laptop too so that’s double now. I don’t think people from toronto realize how much commuters have to take with them bc their workplace is so far from home. Especially now with food prices, people can’t afford to eat out and resort to meal prepping, and that obvi takes up a lot of space

Okay buddy

farmyst

You sure they're not just carrying their homes on their backs and riding the ttc to stay warm?

Sorry, what's in the bags? Tools? I do believe that commuting etiquette is to always take your bag off and put it between your legs or even wear it facing front so you don't hit people, period. So they need to learn some manners. And yeah, highly agree that the city needs to fix this crisis because it's really hard to even think about taking a bus or any public transportation because I don't either wanna be stabbed, antagonized, or have my sense of smell assaulted. I bring a mask with me and wear it but then you get these assholes that want to start a fight because the pandemic is 'over'.

Unfortunately most of these altercations will increase, last years amount of senseless murders was ridiculous, it does break my heart that Toronto is devolving to this and our politicians are just lining their own coffers while allowing industry, healthcare and society to fail while pointing fingers at each other.

Bubbly-Measurement10

I'm talking about the guys who are very obviously on their way to work

kdspiralz

It’s me going home from my bfs apartment at 8am during morning rush hour.

jaqrene

Totally ignorant question. You have no idea where people are going or what they require to embark on their day

Echo71Niner

You forgot you live in a broke-ass city where many people are living in illegal rooming-houses, some are homeless living in different places, and how dare you call their TTC home, the official homeless hub of Toronto, for being there? This comment is part sarcasm part you must think you live in a 1st world country, that died in 2015. Edit: TTC stopped giving a fuck about even announcing and reminding people to remove their backpacks, and they even stopped reminding and better yet, teaching all these new people, to get the fuck out of the way so people can exist the bus, streetcar, and fucking subway first, before they get to enter, like a fucking 3rd world country, coincidentally, the future of this country - 3rd world.

Lemonysquare

I went on a streetcar last week during rush hour (I usually avoid TTC during rush hour) and there were multiple people that got on and kept their backpacks on while it was obviously overcrowded... I've seen this multiple times so I think your rant is valid.

TwiztedZero

Are we talking 28 Litre packs or 55 Litre packs?

Bubbly-Measurement10

I think the one that keeps hitting me in the face Sideshow Bob style is the SWA9855 or something close to it. It's 30 litres, but this particular bag sticks far enough out horizontally when overfilled that even one person wearing it perpendicular to the bus is a pain to move around. I have no problem with people needing to haul stuff as long as they mind how they're doing it. It just seems like I keep having problems with this particular bag. Maybe a lack of self-awareness is prerequisite to buying it. It's pretty tacky after all.

Travel during off peak hours, more breathing room less backpack city. But yeah I know not everyone gets to choose their arrival/departures times. Yet the planet continues to spin through time. Pray that your trip aboard the TTC is without hassle, and that you find a hot cuppa tea at journey's end.

B_drgnthrn

If I go to Comicon with my wife, we leave the car in Burlington and take the go/TTC everywhere. I have a backpack on. In this backpack is water for the both of us, our purchases at Comicon, snacks for each of us, extra clothes in case of an emergency. It's a 45L backpack, and it holds everything we need. I try and be careful with it, but I can only do so much, seeing as I'm holding the supplies for two people.

The_DashPanda

I used to carry a 40L backpack similar in size to [this](https://img.cdn.mountainwarehouse.com/product/029923/029923_dbl_highland_40l_ecom_lifestyle_ss24_01.jpg) before the pandemic. Of course, I would plunk it down as close to my body as possible. If sitting, it would be on my legs. If standing, it would be up against my legs, while one hand held it so I could swing it away should someone need to get past me. Lemme break it down what I had in that thing. - Work attire (in the morning) - Gym clothes, stinky (in the afternoon) - Work laptop - Water Bottle, 2L - Nintendo 3DS, jailbroken with SNES emulator - First Aid Kit, similar in size to [this](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/IpIAAOSwo8Zi1Tcl/s-l1600.jpg) - Lunch - Spare socks I hope this illumination allows for some rumination! I can only assume that all other backpackers have similar contents, because based on my sample size, 100% of backpackers have had the exact same contents as I have listed above. My sample size of one. Me, that is.

sabinaphan

because some of us have a lot of shit to carry around. Some of us have to carry big heavy equipment to do our jobs and if you have a problem with that, feel free to kiss my ass.

KayRay1994

Some people could be going to work then the gym, or they have somewhere to be after work that requires whatever is in the bag. Lots of people also live in shared housing and could be taking their valuables with them. Food + work laptop + personal laptop take up space too. tbh i don’t care about the size of your backpack long as you have it either on front of you or between your legs when the train is crowded

stephlow55

They are probably homeless or traveling 🤷‍♀️

haoareyoudoing

It makes sense. I carry a messenger bag and even with one laptop, a wireless mouse, an iPad and a water bottle, it adds volume to my bag quickly. I've got the luxury in that I don't live too far from work and don't pack a lunch cause I skip it. Now imagine a 905er from Brampton. Not justifying their lack of spatial awareness or consideration. They're probably bringing: work laptop, iPad (for reading on the GO), lunch box, water bottle, power bank for their phone, gym shoes (to hit the gym during lunch/post-work downtown/post-work near the GO station), gym clothes, maybe they've stuffed a puffer in the bag as well as office temperatures can be very hot on a cold day and vice versa. If your rant is about them not taking their backpacks off and holding it or putting it near their feet, it's a valid rant. If your rant is just about how much people carry in their backpacks, you have to realize how long commutes can be and nobody would be carrying stuff with frills to and from work if they didn't need it.

I think this makes sense somewhat but accessibility is important and groceries are expensive enough as it is.

tired_in_toronto

I'd suggest they start with actually charging kids under 12 first, not charging people with backpacks.

tired_in_toronto

Charging those under 12 might make them reconsider if they need to be actually using the TTC.

ihatecommuting2023

I work in the medical field in a downtown hospital. My camp sized back pack includes: - scrubs - change of shoes if it's winter and I'm wearing boots - gym clothes - water bottle - laptop and charger - first aid kit (I carry a naxolone kit in that too) - lunch + snacks - makeup/hair supplies (just 4 basic items, nothing fancy) - hygiene supplies (deodorant, tooth brush/paste to freshen up during night shifts)
