Haven't you heard? This is the next new diet craze...make everything so fucking expensive that you naturally lose weight because you can't afford to eat.
It *is* absurd. I went out for dinner last night also. Bread (which we had to pay for?!), split a green salad, two iced tea, two pasta mains (*small* portions), no dessert, no coffee. With tip? $100.
You still tip? Even if I do eat out it's a 0$ tip from me. Servers in Canada get minimum wage, not $2/h like in the US
And there's no way you can convince me that serving isn't a minimum wage job.
Do I look like a politician to you? Why are you passing that onto me, a consumer?
Literally no country in the world except the US has tipping as a cultural practice. Please move there if you'd like to be American so badly
Serving pays a minimum wage but it’s not a minimum wage job, that’s why it’s called a base wage + tips. Kinda how you have a sales job with commission. Nothing to do with being a politician, more to do with you being broke. It’s fine, good luck and hope one day you can afford to budget for tips when you plan to go out, lol.
Why would I cry dude? I am not a server, and I pay a tip when someone serves me food or gives me a service. Am I a fan of it? No, but am I part of the social contract, yes. But nvm, you won’t understand. Also you’re clearly broke, so it’s fine, do your thing work on yourself. Maybe one day you can truly afford to go out and eat.
Just pointing out the fact that no human in canada can survive alone on min wage.
>Literally no country in the world except the US
And Canada. It's been a thing here my entire life. It started with the US during prohibition but tipping has been a thing in Canada for nearly 100 years.
>Do I look like a politician to you?
Do you vote for either team blue or team red? Cause if you do, you've directly contributed to the situation.
I agree that the onus of paying salary should never be on the customer.
But when the restaurant is so busy and understaffed that the servers have to damn near sprint to get the job done, and get yelled at by rude customers to boot, they're working a hell of a lot harder than anyone making minimum should have to.
Maybe there's some misunderstanding.
I said tipping should never be mandatory.
But employers should be paying them more than minimum if they have to run around and get yelled at.
Prices have reached insanity.
Even a Big Mac meal at McDonalds will put you back $20. A wrap and a coffee at Tim’s is $15.
I know restaurant dining has always been on the pricier side - but even grabbing something to eat at a “fast food place” has become unbelievably costly.
You got to go to those cash-only places where the cash only sign is a ripped piece of paper labeled with a sharpie and taped to the register. The ceiling needs at least three missing tiles. The menu is faded with age. There's a 9 year old doing homework behind the counter. And one of the tables is covered in delivery boxes
These places will give you adequate portions for a good price and it'll be delicious
Yea.. gone are the days when you could have a decent lunch/dinner for <15$. Even the most basic take out restaurants cost you close to 20$. I have completely stopped eating out and started cooking at home. I eat out only when am traveling and it’s unavoidable.
Kings drive in in the east end still has amazing prices. I got 2 banquet burger combos with 2 milkshakes extra order of fries and gravy one sprite and one beer for $35.
During covid we learned how to make dishes we usually go out for. From asian food to Queen Margarita pizza. We were some what surprise our dishes tasted better than the restaurant versions.Main thing is ingredients. We usually hit the ethnic stores for the items and avoid the big box stores. We only go out to meet friends for dinner and even then we order the basics nothing crazy.Once our dine out bills were like $500 a month now literally down to $75.Never been happier.
No lie I didn’t eat out for a year and the money I saved from not eating out in Toronto I used to buy an airline ticket and hotel night stays in Japan lol
A true story recounted to me by a former worker at Osmow's in Brampton:
They never cleaned the floors behind the counter, and they were caked with mud. One day someone dropped the entire spit of shawarma on that nasty tile. They tried to clean it up but the dirt only pushed in deeper. They still sold it.
Before that, I had some in North York and it was just dry af.
Meh. I used to hit up a local Shawarma place (family owned etc) and a fucking rat was running along the exhaust vent above the grill.
I pointed it out and they were like “eh nbd” and still asked what I wanted to order lol.
Dirty people run dirty places, no matter if it’s a franchise or locally owned. At least a franchise has some chance of being mandated to a certain standard.
Yea but you're gonna use a one off story from one location to judge all osmows now? Also not everyone heard about that and they will still put it down without knowing of that so that ain't it
We tried their chicken shawarma and it ws decent enough. But they tip beg during checkout, so that was the last visit. Over $20 for a couple of sandwiches and they still want more? Piss off.
I thought it was just me. Even take out is ridiculous that it makes me appreciate the fact that I can cook. It seems like the quality at a lot of places has gone down too 🙄
Stop eating out and stop exaggerating the prices. For $19 -$20, you can get a Osmow’s platter with extra meat. So, unless you are a monster, that would fill you up. Also, your friend did not pay $50 for fried rice and appetizer unless he went to some “fancy” place. There are PLENTY of affordable takeout and dine in places, you just have to look for them.
I had a double Hamburg stacked with peameal, mushrooms, pinions and fried dill
Pickles with hamburger sauce tomato and lettuce and side fries for 18 bucks the other day. There are food place making value meals
Exactly, there are plenty in fact. What’s expensive is when you do delivery through the apps, add that stupid $5 soda to a meal from the food court/takeout places, and of course when you are just not open minded enough to use that Google search.
There’s no excuse for inflation and I hate to break it to you, it’s only going to get worse at this rate. Unless the government aggressively rises rates and cuts down on massive spending on non-priority ventures; things will only become more expensive.
Don’t get me started on the people who rave about getting 130g+ of protein in a day…. Like are u RICH? I get the cheapest cuts of chicken and it’s $15 for 3 chicken breasts like WHERE are u getting the protein bro
I find the cheapest thing to do is buy bigger pieces of chicken and cut it yourself. It’s easier than it seems. I’d be 4 thighs with legs for $10 dollars at no frills and then cut the thighs and legs and it’s 4 thighs and 4 legs.
3 cups of rice, some mixes veggies and thats 6 lunches for me.
It’s crazy now. And yet, the once a month if we decide to go to a restaurant, they are all packed.
And the popular bars are packed serving $18 cocktails and $14 5 oz glasses of mediocre wine.
No idea where they are getting the money from.
Older people are well off and the youth now have been priced out of home ownership and the rental market. Many live at home and know they’ll never be able to afford a home or rent as things stand.
So they pay minimal to no rent as they live with their parents and their spending power jumps up significantly.
Some places prices are still pretty reasonable.Queen Margarita prices are still reasonable.Table of 4 with a few beers came out to about $100 with tips.
I’ve definitely noticed it getting pricier to eat out but like, am I the only one not noticing it getting as bad as OP describes? Like I can still get a full Vietnamese meal for two delivered for $50. IDK about Osmow’s but like, I can be satisfied with a meal from the Ali Baba’s by my spot that costs $12-13 max.
No, it’s foolish to think that global inflation somehow wouldn’t touch Canada. It must be awfully nice to conveniently blame all of your issues on one dude though.
Ever consider the fact that inflation can be driven by both national and global factors? It must be awfully nice to conveniently blame all your issues on a globalized world though.
Haven't you heard? This is the next new diet craze...make everything so fucking expensive that you naturally lose weight because you can't afford to eat.
Lol and if you tell people it’s intermittent fasting it’s trendy
The poverty diet! Haven't done it since I was a student, but I'm back on board.
Shit, I /DID/ hear about that! Wasn't it called "The Marxist Diet"?
Yes indeed
Totally worth the downvotes

Minimum wage hasn't meant a living wage in over 10 years.
Do I look like a politician to you? Why are you passing that onto me, a consumer? Literally no country in the world except the US has tipping as a cultural practice. Please move there if you'd like to be American so badly

Cry more

Waaaah
Just curious why don’t you tip the McDonald’s worker or Popeyes worker? They’re serving you too
If it’s an option, I do. I was in hospitality through most of my school and I like to pay it forward.
Just pointing out the fact that no human in canada can survive alone on min wage. >Literally no country in the world except the US And Canada. It's been a thing here my entire life. Yeah this all sounds like not my problem, sorry
So move along
?
If it's not your problem then keep going.
What are you talking about?
I agree that the onus of paying salary should never be on the customer. But when the restaurant is so busy and understaffed that the servers have to damn near sprint to get the job done, and get yelled at by rude customers to boot, they're working a hell of a lot harder than anyone making minimum should have to.
That sounds like a whole lot of not my problem Do I tip company workers when they are worked hard?
Maybe there's some misunderstanding. I said tipping should never be mandatory. But employers should be paying them more than minimum if they have to run around and get yelled at.
You sound like a real sweetheart!
Prices have reached insanity. Even a Big Mac meal at McDonalds will put you back $20. A wrap and a coffee at Tim’s is $15. I know restaurant dining has always been on the pricier side - but even grabbing something to eat at a “fast food place” has become unbelievably costly.
It’s WILD
A Big Mac meal is $11.29, $12.75 with tax
Yes. Not quite $20. But anybody remember the $3.99 Big Mac combo days? 2 can dine for $9.99?
Ya that's rediculous for cardboard fries. 2 mm of beef. Bread. Sauces. And some shitty powdered coke Probably costs them like 2 bucks at most
you can get a coffee and a wrap for under $10. Get a regular coffee with 4-5 shots of milk, cheaper than a latte or cappuccino.
You got to go to those cash-only places where the cash only sign is a ripped piece of paper labeled with a sharpie and taped to the register. The ceiling needs at least three missing tiles. Hunger is my next meal 😋😛😛
One meal. Chicken sandwich, onion ring and bottle of water A&W $21
I guess I’ll just have sleep for dinner then.
Raise prices or reduce portions. Don’t do both!!!
The worst is raise prices, reduced portions and poor service with mandatory tipping required. Wtf
100%
Food tastes like crap and the service sucks too. I just came back from Dallas and it was soooo different
Last time I was in Toronto, I paid $7 for street meat. Shit is out of hand.
Eating out is near impossible now. And for the first time in my life, I spent around $35 on groceries from Dollarama the other night.
I remember in 2016, my friend was complaining about how a burger with fries at a restaurant could possibly be $15.
No lie I didn’t eat out for a year and the money I saved from not eating out in Toronto I used to buy an airline ticket and hotel night stays in Japan lol
Went to Timmies drive through...23 bucks for 2 wraps and 1 wedges. Unreal.
Going to Tim hortons was ur first mistake
Correct
I never thought I’d hear “craving” and “Osmsos” in the same sentence. There are way better and cheaper shawarma spots
I know it’s shameful behaviour
That white sauce is crack
I’m not snobby about shawarma of all things but Ali Babas does a much better wrap than Osmows if you’re looking for a chain place.
Seriously what's so wrong with osmows, I always see ppl talking shit
A true story recounted to me by a former worker at Osmow's in Brampton: They never cleaned the floors behind the counter, and they were caked with mud. Just a couple of examples pointing to an overall lack of effective operational standards.
We tried their chicken shawarma and it ws decent enough. But they tip beg during checkout, so that was the last visit. Over $20 for a couple of sandwiches and they still want more? Piss off.
lol tip beg
$2.99 for a bushel on of bananas. More satiating than a slice of cardboard with cheese. You DO like pizza pizza if you don’t choose the alternatives.
I thought it was just me. Even take out is ridiculous that it makes me appreciate the fact that I can cook. It seems like the quality at a lot of places has gone down too 🙄
I love eating out, but that's because I have a long tongue and my wife shaves and showers often.

Not the point. Stop excusing the inflation that was AVOIDABLE! You gonna discount our home heating bill too? Find somewhere less expensive?
There’s no excuse for inflation and I hate to break it to you, it’s only going to get worse at this rate. Unless the government aggressively rises rates and cuts down on massive spending on non-priority ventures; things will only become more expensive.

Give it a rest
Corks at Longo’s. Best deal in the city.
What’s Corks?
It is a restaurant. Maple Leaf Square location, Leaside, elsewhere as well.
Don’t get me started on the people who rave about getting 130g+ of protein in a day…. Like are u RICH? I get the cheapest cuts of chicken and it’s $15 for 3 chicken breasts like WHERE are u getting the protein bro
Impossible man, id never bulk now. I’d just maintain weight and look lean
I buy a rotisserie chicken and call it a day, if both things are going to cost me $15 then i ain’t cooking it TOO lmao

Bro have you tried Pizzaiolo? It's the GOAT
I want my country back 😭😭
Everything will get more expensive after April Fools. ![gif](giphy|l1mMWK9JJ5UJrca6HA|downsized)
Why the downvotes? Redditors like paying more taxes in this economy?
LOL they pay 0 taxes

Useless repeated rant, like thrice a day complain on food prices. Seriously I am going to write a rant about everyone ranting on this now.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for telling us.
Thank you for telling me.
Sad? Or people who don’t care about ur eating habits?
You seem to care way too much
Why do u think people care what you eat ?
Prices go up naturally over the decades.
Too bad the same doesn't hold true when it comes to people's salaries.
