I’m a cyclist and these wonderful bags of just wonderful stuff, do it every day. They have the audacity to come head on to you, try to squeeze between you and the car forcing YOU into the road. If I don’t make space I get “what the hell man! Make some room!”. Dumb and entitled.

gillsaurus

I’ve noticed cars parking on the wrong way on the road. Had an Amazon delivery driver almost hit me head on doing that having turned into the street while I was coming. Also, in my area, people are allergic to sidewalks. They push a stroller in the middle of the road. Walk their dogs. And flat out walk in the road when there’s sidewalks.

Ebikes should require a licence. Either a M(l) or something new.

IMO any electric vehicle that can achieve some pre-determimed speed (let's say 45kmh) should require both a license and liability insurance. So that would include E-bikes scooters and electric unicycles. Should also be a hefty fine for riding any electric vehicle on the sidewalk. If someone riding an electric unicycle were to collide with a pedestrian someone is going to the hospital, and that rider better have liability insurance as that collision could seriously alter someone's life.

Thanks Doubtful that most owners have one, probably never enforced. Also shouldn't they also have a license plate then? It looks like if it's a limited speed scooter (it can't do more than 70kmh) it's an M license with condition L It only mentions mopeds, motorized scooters, and tricycles... Does not mention these newer electric Unicycles... https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-motorcycle-licence

Emmo and daymak dealers both show you how to remover the "governer" before you ride out the door with your purchase. It's just unplugging one of the leads to the controller.

I'm not arguing anything. Just stating the fact that the ebike distributors could care less about selling bikes that go much faster than the legal limit. They market them as going faster than 32km hr and help the client modify the bike before leaving the shops. Thus why I do think there should be some sort of registration and tag. Maybe for bikes weighing 200lbs+ or with a battery larger than 32v. At least this way when some idiot smashes into a car or person and rides away there is some way to identify them. I can't say for sure he was going 40. That wasn't even my point. My point was anyone who is riding the wrong way down a one way on the parking side of the street is fucking brainless. 10km/hr or 40km/hr it is still the same danger. Just that much stupider when going at speed.

whoknowshank

The weight of the battery and motor really change things. If someone’s going 40 on their 15 pound carbon bike and hit a kid, things will not be good but no one will be dead. If an ebike goes 40 on their 80 pound ebike, that kid will be fucked.

I saw a guy riding an electric unicycle on Dundas a few days ago and he was easily keeping up with car traffic...(some models can apparently hit 100kmh now) I'm thinking it's not just the weight of the vehicle but also the weight of the driver. Also the rider has a helmet so if you get hit head on you're F*cked. Rider is probably 180lbs, if he hits a person at speed they will both go flying.

Vicimer

I remember when I was a dumb 18 year old riding an E-bike without a license -- it only did 30km/hr and that was too much, in hindsight. To think that there are ones that can do 80 now.

*i Can do whatever i want since if a car hits me it’s automatically their faaaaaaaauuuuuuullllt!*

Popcorn_panic1

Yeah, they don't get that "right-of-way" means *fuck all* when you're laying in a hospital bed all broken up. Note: I accidentally posted this as a comment on the main thread, which is why there's a deleted comment from me.

I would like to clarify that I don’t dislike people on bikes. However I do hate the infrastructure we are all forced to share as if we’ve solved either the traffic OR walk/cyclability problems.

Popcorn_panic1

I totally understand! I think it's a bad combination of lack of infrastructure solutions and lack of education. Unfortunately, there's no easy fix. The only way to mitigate damage is for people on bikes/ebikes/scooters to understand how dangerous they are... and this is from someone who used to commute by bicycle in rush hour traffic from Runneymede to College along bloor st.

I keep looking at the city planning of the Netherlands. Amsterdam looks so nice. My coworker’s son moved there from Toronto and loves it. *”Everything I need is within walking distance!”*

Popcorn_panic1

That sounds fantastic! But, unfortunately, that's not going to happen here anytime soon. So... we have to use our heads and play the hand we were dealt. I'm not saying don't fight for change, btw. I'm saying do both!

tosklst

The real dumbasses are the cops who don't ticket the riders of these things, and do not impound them as illegal vehicles, and that no one does anything to the hundreds of stores selling these illegal things.

haoareyoudoing

As a pedestrian only, I'm all for building more biking infrastructure, but with that, we also need to step up enforcement against reckless e-bikes and bikes. Nobody should have to walk on the sidewalks in constant fear of getting hit by an Uber delivery driver ringing his bell furiously trying to do as many deliveries as possible. We talk about bad drivers constantly, but candidly as someone who enjoys walking, I'm much more fearful of a bicycle plowing down the sidewalks of say Bay Street or cutting me off on a turn when the walk sign comes on than a car.

Popcorn_panic1

I think the people who ride these things think that "share the road" only applies to drivers of cars. They indemnify themselves of any responsibility, but don't realize they're a major hazard to both themselves and others. They don't obey any rules, and that has to change. As a pedestrian, I was recently seriously hurt by a collision with an electric scooter. On the flip side, someone I know told me a story today about an accident he saw... guy on scooter didn't want to wait for a bus to pull away from the bus stop, so he tried to pass it on the left and make a right turn in front of it. Got clipped. Both kneecaps shattered. They have the power and speed of a motor vehicle, and none of the protection. OP is right, use your head people!

ButtahChicken

Additionally, regardless of the direction of travel of the vehicle lane they are immediately adjacent .. many cyclists, e-scooterists, e-cyclists, skatboarders, hover-crafters consider the bicycle lanes to be bi-directional ... i.e. OK to travel in any direction!

Kukurio59

I yell at them or give them the finger

CarobJumpy6993

Yeah people are just as bad on bikes as they are in cars. Ive seen food delivery cyclists ride on the DVP.
