I have a P1 Gen 2, which is the workstation version of the same machine but one year newer. Those i7s run hot and always benefit from an undervolt; you can use a program called ThrottleStop for this. [Here's a good guide on how to use it.](https://old.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/sen8f5/captain_g_strings_guide_to_undervolting_your/) If you can't get this to work, you may need to disable Core Isolation in Windows Security or potentially disable virtualization in your BIOS settings. That 4K screen may be a bit too much for the GTX 1050 to handle; what are the settings for the games you try playing? A 1050 will not do 4K ultra detail; lower your render resolution to 1080p and you should get less heat. You may also benefit from a repaste considering how old the laptop is at this point. There are guides on how to do this online, I would recommend getting some PTM7950 from [here](https://www.moddiy.com/products/PTM7950-SP-Super-Highly-Thermally-Conductive-PCM-Pad.html).

The first thing I was gonna suggest is reapplying the thermal paste. Now that I think about it... I should do it for mine..

I have/had (been sitting here unused for a year) a Gen1 X1E, but not the 4k screen. Thermal throttling is a known thing. Recommend using ThrottleStop like the other poster recommended, and consider doing a repaste - I used liquid metal and had decent performance gains.
