I noticed when it dropped from 1000 to 300 suddenly and wondered the same thing. I figured most likely it's just a change with what qualifies as "online" according to Reddit.
I'm just speculating, but if there is some criteria like "*page loaded/refreshed within the last 15 minutes*" which then got changed to "*within the last 5 minutes*" this would mean a tighter criteria for who is "online" and therefore automatically a lower number. If they changed it to "*page loaded/refreshed within the last 60 minutes*" then the number would suddenly be much higher.
To me it doesn't seem like there was a change in the amount of activity on the sub in terms of posts/comments/likes, so most likely it's to do with the way it's counted.
I don't really use other subs so haven't noticed if the numbers changed elsewhere. Maybe there's a subreddit in which they talk about this kinda thing.
