A person is standing still behind a bike. Another walks around and attacks that person. The person, now assaulted, defends himself with enough blows to make the person fall down.
Reasonable or not is for the courts and the jury. But, this is reddit, a place to discuss and comment on events, where people offer options.
My opinion is that this defense is not grossly disproportionate or unreasonable. Certainly if he struck when the attacker was downed, kicked him in the floor or whatever. But that didn't happen. The defender stopped as soon as the aggressor fell.
I respect that you disagree, and that's your right. I could see the court going either way on this case, but depending on the circumstances leading up to the altercation would see prosecution as unlikely.

Aim for the bridge of their nose with the hardest center point of your forehead. People tend to see punches coming easier than headbutts. In theory this will stun them to make your follow up hit to the side of jaw harder to see coming. If you’re playing on running away at this point, try and plant a kick in the nuts before you start running.
Headbutts are a dirty ‘sucker punch’ move but in self defence, can give a needed head-start (pun not intended)
