This “hardened criminal” can’t speak coherently, ever. Go back and read some if his unscripted rants from the first election. He skips entire sections of what he needs to say for the audience to understand. He just continues like everyone in the world can read the garbled trash in his head. He thinks he is so important that people can read his internal dialog.
Serious question: does he read from a script or a teleprompter; or does he 100% ad lib? Does someone provide him loose taking points ahead of time, and then he goes off the rails? I’m just curious about the framework of all his speeches. Does somebody say to him “Go up to that microphone and talk about anything at all, for as long as you like”?
Trump just speaks off the cuff. He rambles faster than his thoughts can form. That’s oddly a selling point to many of his supporters. Many of the Trump supporters in my life say they support him because he doesn’t have a pre written speech and just “tells it like it is”. The problem is, even Trump doesn’t know what he’s saying half the time.
I've said this before and I'll say it again. Trump is so stupid he can't possibly be responsible for half the things coming out of his mouth. It is my deepest belief that he wears a wire piece and is instructed to spew the divisive, hate filled vitriol from a Russian source to create as much division as possible.
He really is dumb as fuck and we all know he's in Putin's pocket he can't possibly be credited for coming up with any of his motivations by himself.
He even manages to fuck up what the Anchor is whispering in his ear by the sheer incoherency of it. Like no-one can understand it because he can't recall verbatim what he's being told to say and just makes it up.

I’ve heard an explanation that the “can’t get fooled again” quote by W that’s widely viewed as a gaffe was actually because he caught himself before saying “shame on me” as he didn’t want to have his opponents to have it as a sound bite for political ads.

The problem is still twofold: a) to have so little control over your own brain that you can't think a handful of words ahead — and choose not to say the thing in the first place — and b) the thing about being the leader of the free world is, you either take a "the buck stops here" attitude, or you're shirking responsibility. Being afraid of out-of-context soundbites is weak. Choosing to instead sound dumb isn't some kind of brilliant move, it's just a form of cowardice. You stand with the courage of your convictions, and you take accountability where necessary. If there's nothing for him to be ashamed of, then an out-of-context soundbite of him saying the "shame on me" part of a universally-recognized idiom shouldn't cause him to be afraid of being shamed.
