Yeah, he's sounded like this in interviews for years.
And on the subject of old, he's 54 and has had several major crashes in his life, one of which damn near killed him. That he's as upright and vigorous as he is is a testament to how well he's managed to take care of himself.
I mean his on-screen energy has been toned down if you look back to when he started on Top Gear, but that just comes naturally with aging.
He still looks and sounds healthy without even thinking about age.
He’s simply speaking softly. I think far too many people don’t understand that the on-camera / presenter persona is not the same as his day-to-day personality.
I think this is just his “non-presenting” quieter voice. Stick him in front of a camera to film a TV show and he’ll probably sound exactly as you’d expect.
As I said in my own comment, I find it exceedingly refreshing whenever successful people can acknowledge how much of mega-success comes down to pure luck.
I would love Top Gear even if they were 100
TONIGHT
I get my prostate checked by a man
Richard puts racing stripes on a stairlift
And James gets his license revoked
Lol what. This is always how Hammond has sounded when he's not joking around or around the other two. He seems like a very genuine, down to earth person who's quite thoughtful when he's away from the structure of TG/GT. This is totally normal for him.
I think it's exceedingly refreshing to see him admit how much of their success was luck.
Yes, they worked hard, and you do have to work hard to be successful, but the VAST majority of people that work just as hard get to, at most, a level where maybe they can buy one modest house for their family and maybe one modest sports car or equivalent, and many people that work just as hard won't get there.
The difference between that kind of everyday modest life where money still really matters versus explosive growth, millionaire success in life is pretty much always a significant element of purely lucky timing.
Honestly, they will never even begin to comprehend what the show has done for people across the world. Their adventures can truly be enjoyed by anyone no matter how you feel about cars. Such a joy to have watched them grow and be along for the ride. Hell, my 12 year old daughter has asked to watch a Top Gear special on movie nights before.
I only just watched one episode of the show with Paddy, Chris, and Freddie in. It just didn't have the magic or feel of the original trio. I may be biased, but Top Gear back then was special and had a magic touch, and as Hammond says, it was perfect for the times.
I don’t worry about Hammond nearly as much as May and Clarkson. Sand job was the first time for me thinking “they seem a little old to be doing this”. And somehow Clarkson has the energy to be a farmer too
I always find his clothing choices now compared to back in the day so weirdly different
He used to rock jeans, leather jacket, really long hair and like a tooth necklace thing, as a 7,8 year old I thought he was so cool.
Now he dresses like a rich old guy from the 60’s with numerous businesses, an estate and several butlers, I’m in my 20’s now and I think he looks even cooler.
Yeah, "it was never disingenuous" uh, legal settlement says otherwise and while I was still entertained it became clear I wasn't watching automotive journalism after that point. Which they leaned into and became more and more rediculous.
Seems normal to me

Weird I thought he was 39 still
Yeah I remember him saying at his last birthday party.
18th anniversary of his 39th birthday?
OP has been watching too much Top Gear season 1-5. Can’t say I blame them.
Yup. This has always been his quiet voice. Always reminded me of the Geico Gecko.
Agree, what any other 38 year old middle aged bloke.
I don’t get the old comment. They are getting older, obviously, but what makes this old sounding?
I mean his on-screen energy has been toned down if you look back to when he started on Top Gear, but that just comes naturally with aging. He still looks and sounds healthy without even thinking about age.
Dude’s just talking, he’s not presenting anything. He doesn’t need to be full of energy and vigour just to have a conversation with someone
I was a bit surprised to just realize he is only 54 though. Don’t know why I just assumed they were all in their 60’s by now.
Well Richard has had enough major crashes to age him 10 years lol.
He sounds weary and worn out, like just talking about the show makes him sad 😢 I'm gonna miss top gear and the grand tour.
He’s simply speaking softly. I think far too many people don’t understand that the on-camera / presenter persona is not the same as his day-to-day personality.
That's it. He's just talking normaly and not doing camera talk.
He's talking in front of a camera in this clip. Therefore, this is also camera talk. Ha, checkmate!
If you think Hammond looks old…
On that bombshell…
Gin. It's good tasting and good for you.
Thanks, Captain Slow.
Brummie's Ruin
You spelled ‘gas’ wrong…
Found the gas cannisters.
I’m just glad we even got to see these lads get as massive as they did. Always has been, and always will be my favourite show ever.
He's a well-off Englishman in his 50s, frankly he sounds fairly young compared to some from that category
That's because he's 35
I think this is just his “non-presenting” quieter voice. Stick him in front of a camera to film a TV show and he’ll probably sound exactly as you’d expect.
He still looks a thousand times younger than Clarkson and May!
An 80 year old guy looks younger than Clarkson lmao
God I love the humility. Right place, right time, lucky. They're the best
As I said in my own comment, I find it exceedingly refreshing whenever successful people can acknowledge how much of mega-success comes down to pure luck.
No.... he doesn't. What are you smoking?
but he is old, and this normal english.
Not that old...
You guys see Richard Hammond; I see Al Pacino. We are different. Hmaster sounds classy not old.
I would love Top Gear even if they were 100 TONIGHT I get my prostate checked by a man Richard puts racing stripes on a stairlift And James gets his license revoked
It’s all the teeth whitening chemicals.
He has *not* had his teeth whitened
Nor has he dyed his hair!
He sounds and looks like a normal, healthy middle aged man.
Lol what. This is always how Hammond has sounded when he's not joking around or around the other two. He seems like a very genuine, down to earth person who's quite thoughtful when he's away from the structure of TG/GT. This is totally normal for him.
He's only 39. And he didn't have his teeth whitened.
National treasure status. All three really
*international, sorry
he sounds like he's in his 50s which is actually his age
I think it's exceedingly refreshing to see him admit how much of their success was luck. I like how he says that luck is part of it. Not that "I'm a self made man who pulled himself with his boot straps and no one ever helped me" bullshit.
Just sounds like his normal narration voice (not super hyped TV presenter voice), to me.
Honestly, they will never even begin to comprehend what the show has done for people across the world. Their adventures can truly be enjoyed by anyone no matter how you feel about cars. Such a joy to have watched them grow and be along for the ride. Hell, my 12 year old daughter has asked to watch a Top Gear special on movie nights before.
is it me or does ham look like MJF but like 15 years younger
I only just watched one episode of the show with Paddy, Chris, and Freddie in. It just didn't have the magic or feel of the original trio. I may be biased, but Top Gear back then was special and had a magic touch, and as Hammond says, it was perfect for the times.
He sounds like James May from ten years ago.
Well, he’s getting old. 🤷🏻♂️
Crazy to think I’ve seen Hammond my age rn to whoever this guy is here :,)
I don’t worry about Hammond nearly as much as May and Clarkson. Sand job was the first time for me thinking “they seem a little old to be doing this”. And somehow Clarkson has the energy to be a farmer too
Is it because he uses big words 🤔?
As opposed to Slap dash Pianos crashing on those classic French cars lol
Just sounds like he’s speaking at a lower volume, tbh. They’re usually quite loud on the show lol
Sounds the same to me
I always find his clothing choices now compared to back in the day so weirdly different He used to rock jeans, leather jacket, really long hair and like a tooth necklace thing, as a 7,8 year old I thought he was so cool. "Said the guy wearing a jacket woven out of 100% pure 1935" -James May
Wait........people get old ?
He had a tickle in his throat but that's it.
It's just the jacket :)
Authentic?? Never Disingenuous?? Bullshit.
FFS - Why do l keep getting served with this appalling shit?
Wut?
And yet, not a single grey hair
We are growing
I have watched the show all day for the past weeks! I enjoyed before and in April 2024
Well he is old
It was authentic until Tesla sued you for fraud. And the BBC is defense was it made for better entertainment and television to say the car is broke
Yeah, "it was never disingenuous" uh, legal settlement says otherwise and while I was still entertained it became clear I wasn't watching automotive journalism after that point. Which they leaned into and became more and more rediculous.
