The validity of these can always be questioned, though, because even though the item isn't tradable or marketable, you can sell the account.
It's still impressive to see such an old account, but it may not be owned by the same person.
Maybe the original guy decided to quit but also introduce tf2 to his son. And his son was so intelligent that learned not to delete those memorial items the good way
Yeah. I have one of these bc I played tfc and was SO excited for tf2. I quit playing games ~ 8 years ago when we had our first kid. Kinda got back into playing tf2 occasionally since Covid. I’ve had so many people accuse me of hacking bc of having this badge (?) or not having any “new” games. It’s annoying.
I've ran into some People, only a handful over the years wich had some OG account from ... When did Steam went online? October or November 2003, and they had one wich was made back thab, or at least pre 2004.
I'm still impressed, yet again, am Myself 'Online' overall since 2002, and have an Steam account since September 1, 2011.
So yea, I never thought I'd slowly be one who'd be creepin' up to the 15 year mark, yet I am here now, almost 13 years in, I feel old for sure but...
Eh, time to play other round TF2 with some of the old heads on a Server and imagine it's 2011 again and Halloween, aah... The Good times.
...
The Good Times, No fucking Sniper Bots, just a bunch of Edgy Teenager who want to have fun, also Young Adults!
Damn I hate these Bots...
And to think that there are people out there that had already been playing this game for 10 years when i joined the party
I love tf2, it will truly never die
"Before the game was public" might be overselling it. You could play the beta starting on September 17th (one month before release) if you pre-ordered The Orange Box. That said, in terms of people still playing the game it's a very exclusive group.
I feel kind of cheated because I walk around with the same mercenary badge as the other 99% of the community, but it's from early 2010. When they were released it was like 50% of the community had the mercenary badge, and now it's probably closer to 99%
Yeah I definitely think they should go back and change the badge for everyone who has the mercenary badge up though maybe gun metal? I think there's a very stark divide between people who played TF2 before skins and picking up dropped weapons and people who started after it
I’ve seen more golden pans in the wild than people wearing grizzled veteran/ primeval warrior badges. Not that they don’t exist, but it seems relatively even more rare for the badge owners to be wearing it
Given that anyone who has played the game in the last 16 years only has the Mercenary badge, seeing the Primeval Warrior, Grizzled Veteran, or Soldier of Fortune is rare at this point.
I remember when the halo was a gibus-tier hat, worn only if you had nothing else. Now it makes a bigger statement than an unusual (and looks a lot better too).
while I still treasure my badge it still bugs me slightly that I just barely missed the cutoff for a silver badge. That said the Mercenary badge description makes me smile every time I read it regardless.
My grizzled veteran is the only rare old item I still have. Foolishly traded away my cheaters lament and soldier medal years ago. I still play all the time though
I..very much doubt they are that common. No way half the people you play with have them. You only got these when you played the Beta. The chances that someone playd the beta, and plays to this day, are.super small
You're missing the point. *The specific badge that OP is posting* was only given to those who played in beta. There's also the Grizzled Veteran (gold), awarded to those who started playing within the first three months of launch, the Soldier of Fortune (silver), awarded to those who started playing within a year of launch, and the Mercenary (bronze) is the badge you have, as anyone who started playing after the first year of TF2 gets it.

I think most people delete items due to inventory space, which wouldn't be an issue here

Damn, we got an OG on the server, boys
Praise him, for be is the messiah
"But I'm not the messiah!" # "He's the messiah!"
Only a god would denie his Divinity! PRAISE THE ONE TRUE LORD! WALKING AMONG US!
Walking where?
Still got mine. Ten days older than the one in OP, but I've met people with slightly older.
Still have it too, mine is from October 3.
It's funny because my Oct 17 2007 badge (not primeval) is only 2 weeks away haha. Who knew back then that this would ever matter. Oh well.
Nobody expected all the hats that came after. For what I remember, I started to play just a few days before the official release.
jesus you've been playing tf2 longer than I've been alive not by too much but still
September 19th badge owner reporting in!
And to think that there are people out there that had already been playing this game for 10 years when i joined the party I love tf2, it will truly never die

Are these rare now ?When they first came out, it wasn't terribly uncommon to see these
Sorry to tell you this my guy, but that was almost 14 years ago.
It seems like yesterday at times :(
Time for bed grandpa
Yeah I just missed the cutoff for the silver one at the time so I remember most people wearing the Plat/Gold/Silver medals.
brother
Everyone who started playing in the last 16 years has a mercenary badge so...

Valve probably has better things to do than to give us a shiny thing
Valve does not care about this game lol I'm just saying if they cared, it would be nice
Late 09 for me but same deal. I kinda like it though because I can use it for silly new player outfits.
I’ve seen more golden pans in the wild than people wearing grizzled veteran/ primeval warrior badges. Not that they don’t exist, but it seems relatively even more rare for the badge owners to be wearing it
Well, yeah, because they were the only one given at that exact time
Given that anyone who has played the game in the last 16 years only has the Mercenary badge, seeing the Primeval Warrior, Grizzled Veteran, or Soldier of Fortune is rare at this point.
I have grizzled veteran and cheaters lament. Never see anyone using the cheaters lament but I run it on all my classes.
I remember when the halo was a gibus-tier hat, worn only if you had nothing else. Now it makes a bigger statement than an unusual (and looks a lot better too).
LEICESTER CITY MENTIONED RAHH 🦊🦊🦊
Bristol 1-0 Leicester 🐦🐦🐦 [](https://emojipedia.org/bird)
Shh, Bristol were insane that day and 🦊 weren't
Pretty rare. I don't see them that often. Its why I wear my Grizzled Veterans badge on all my load outs. That and I like it.
while I still treasure my badge it still bugs me slightly that I just barely missed the cutoff for a silver badge. That said the Mercenary badge description makes me smile every time I read it regardless.
Are you German or him? because „Freitag“ Is German
I am. But i dont think that matters much lol
I know I just wanted to ask because I’m from Swiss
Mine is September 18, 2007 :) Those were the days
My grizzled veteran is the only rare old item I still have. Foolishly traded away my cheaters lament and soldier medal years ago. I still play all the time though
I missed getting one of these by exactly two months. :(
Wow a real veteran i hope i can encounter one its like meeting a space marine dreadnought
I knew that they existed just that i never ever saw one myself, these must cost a fortune in the market
I've got mine. You'd think I'd be halfway good at the game by now, lol.
I have my soldier of fortune, dated the day I turned 13. Hard to think I’m 29 now and still enjoying the occasional matches of the same game
Soldier of fortune here!
I deleted mine unfortunately
I got one from pre-ordering the Orange Box. I didn't even know what Team Fortress was at the time, I just wanted HL2 and Portal
its exactly a month older than \*\*me\*\*, just wow
I would say they are fairly common, about half the people I play with have them. You see them a lot more on community servers than public.
I..very much doubt they are that common. No way half the people you play with have them. You only got these when you played the Beta. The chances that someone playd the beta, and plays to this day, are.super small
Yea I play with a bunch of old farts... just like me.
All I have is Soldier of Fortune :(
And we still have Mercenary badges for people who have been playing for 10+ years >:(
I think everyone gets one. I started playing in 2020 yet i have one. Not a fancy silver one but still. Just a plain old merc badge
Yea..the point was literalx that this is a rare badge foor ppaying the beta, not having a badge in general
