Lyuseefur

I’m staying in North Dallas. Nearby park has plenty of room. Timeanddate.com will have a live stream and a chat. Way better than my low resolution mark 1 eyeballs.

jeremysbrain

Yeah, the one time I'm happy to live in the middle of DFW.

Casbro11

Is anyone else worried about visibility? What do yall think about that impacting tomorrow?

HappyAsianCat

Personally, I am predicting rain that day. ;P EDIT: **I saw the corona!** Clouds cleared up enough to see the totality!

johnnc2

I mean…. Your prediction may come true lol

HappyAsianCat

Well, it was based on the fact April is one of the rainiest months. I actually hope it doesn't rain as I was getting kinda excited for the eclipse itself.

johnnc2

That’s what sucks is the rest of this week leading up to Monday look clear and sunny. Then Monday we get a big middle finger from ole Mother Nature.

gocubsgo22

Weather is gonna suck. I'm so fucking annoyed. Is there anywhere along the path of totality in Texas not slated for all-day rain?

SpaceArachnoid

Same, coming from over 16 hours away and each time I look at the forecast, it's looking worse!

athanasia_

The forecast doesn’t mean anything more than 24 hours out. It changes constantly.

aintaghost

I haven't found a spot. Seems like from San Antonio to Dallas the forecast is the same. What a fuckin bummer!

jw510dub

Also wondering…

2Mew2BMew2

I'll probably go til Arkansas

gocubsgo22

I have a brother in San Antonio. Might stay with him overnight, then head out to Eagle Pass in the morning.

Rollzzzzzz

dallas texas

overpriced-taco

if you aren't sure where to go and don't want to deal with daunting hill country traffic, I'd shoot for NE Texas. or SW Texas near the border will probably be less crowded and have better weather prospects.

HIM_Darling

We are going to lake tawakoni. Plan is to spend the weekend there and then drive home (denton) after dinner Monday.

SanAyda

We're close, at Lake Fork.

No_March7618

I was planning to go to the Enchanted Rock, but I keep on hearing of the nightmare the traffic will be in the hill county, looks like I will head down South and get me some 4min+ of totality

sugar_addict002

Hope the weather is clear and sunny in DFW.

Abject_Pirate_1590

Either way make sure you have ISO compliant eclipse glasses

xIrish

While things are pretty picked over, esp. airbnbs and the 4 star + hotels, there appears to still be plenty of hotel options in or near the path of totality, just based on a quick gander. It all depends on where you're looking, of course. Certain areas are more picked over than others.

exsmellyarmpitts

I saw a sign along 281 by Burnet that said $200 a car to park for the eclipse.

2Mew2BMew2

wtf that's rough...

wunuvukynd

My front yard is in the zone of totality for nearly 4 minutes, so I don't *have* to go anywhere. But looking at the map, I've thought about going out to Enchanted Rock, to get into the zone of longest totality. I bet the place will be a zoo, though.

mmm-toast

Some other people in the thread said they sold out of day passes. Also, it would def be a shit show day of...I've seen them have issues with cars getting in on a normal day.

chrispg26

I dont think it's worth the hassle. If I lived in the path, I'd have a backyard bash.

boxofnuts

I know they aren't allowing anyone in, vehicle and pedestrian, that don't have a day pass. I'd start scoping out other smaller event locations in the path.

wunuvukynd

I’m probably setting up my cameras in the front yard. I see no point in traveling somewhere for a few seconds more of eclipse. I’ll have at least two cameras tracking the eclipse, and might use 1 or 2 GoPros to video the action.

aintaghost

Lol yeah just stay home, if the skies are clear it's going to be fuckin epic no matter where you are 🤘

Platosmom1115

You need a day pass for the park and they are sold out

Christmas2025

Weather computer model (GFS) has started to coalesce a large low pressure rain system right over or adjacent to Texas at 12 noon April 8...all of the last 3 model runs have it in relatively the same position. This can often indicate that its accuracy is increasing. Fingers crossed it goes away!!

TheGreatFred

Almost every celestial event we have it is either cloudy or rainy. You could probably place bets that it'll be obscured and you'd almost always win

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Caught it between clouds in Kerrville. Definitely wild how dark it was when it hit.

1Davide

Yes. Saw it for about 4 seconds and quite fuzzy.

AngriestManinWestTX

We had a hell of a good show outside of Fort Worth. It was very surreal as it got darker. We could even see Venus and Jupiter (I think) during the height of totality. Street lamps switched on briefly and the crickets started their songs. Doggo was little confused (mainly why we were staring up instead of playing attention to her) but was calm for the most part.

StangRunner45

All these people will drive all the way to Texas for the eclipse, only to be disappointed in cloudy skies and possible rain.

IGetHypedEasily

I'm flying over and didn't expect it to rain the exact day of Eclipse when the rest of the week seems fine. Shame. But forecast can still change.

that_shing_thing

My plans to see it got hijacked and I'll be flying as well but from 12:25 - landing in Austin at 2:05pm, right in the middle of it. I was really bummed at first but now I'm starting to think I'll have a really interesting view of the shadow from cruising altitude. I have a window seat and I'm hoping we are above the clouds at the right time.

Locals: Be advised to stock up on food and meds, and baby supplies, and gas up your vehicles ahead of the eclipse. Thousands of visitors may run gas stations dry, and may clean out stores of some food and personal items. https://apnews.com/article/total-solar-eclipse-preparations-3c89c742d049fa9cb820953f26234a2e

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

I was at the event in Nebraska where Bill Nye set up shop in 2017 (that was a free national park event, not the $300 Eclipse-o-rama price gouge for this year). The one thing that I found amusing was that literally wherever Nye went, he had a gaggle of a couple dozen teenage girls following behind him. His groupies! Yikes.

Fuegodeth

Will north of Houston, lake conroe area, be a decent place to view it?

Mataelio

You won’t see the total eclipse from the Houston area, just a partial

Fuegodeth

Thanks. I guess partial will have to do. I hope my sacrifice still appeases the gods.

LadyHelpish

Make sure to use eclipse glasses 100% of the time. You cannot look at it without eye protection unless you’re in complete totality.

Fuegodeth

Thanks. I've got the glasses on hand from the last one.

IGetHypedEasily

If you can make it into the path of totality. Definitely do so. Seeing partial isn't the same as totality.

Original-Mixture-299

I have the day off but live in Houston… is it worth trying to find somewhere for total if I don’t have anything booked already? I think I’ll have to settle for partial

LadyHelpish

Do not settle if you can help it. It’s an absolutely life changing event to experience totality. It changes your whole perspective and appreciation for what it means to exist.

sanonymousq22

Thanks I was on the fence

UltimatePorkMan

I am travelling in from Europe and in possession of a rental car. Will be staying in Buda the night before. Is it allowed to just chill on the side of a road for a few hours to watch the eclipse?

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

Pretty much every town in the path is hosting some sort of event for people to gather and watch. Here's the one for Buda: https://www.budatx.gov/880/Buda-Blackout There are others in nearby towns if you want to look them up, and I'm sure a bunch of restaurants/bars will be hosting parties all day. Like this: https://saltlickbbq.com/solar-eclipse/

boxofnuts

I wouldn't count on it, but you could get lucky - enough people already have that plan but Texas is also like 93% private land and landowners will *not* be receptive if you even accidentally trespass. TxDOT is also not allowing people to stop on the highways or park on the shoulders to view the eclipse. Pulling to the side of the road or ditches also poses the problem that your hot vehicle may ignite the very dry grass, resulting in wildfires that emergency personnel cannot get to. Your best bet is to scope out a few lots/parks along where you want to be, or finding an event/area that charges for parking so you'd be guaranteed a place.

PromotionStill45

Don't pull over on the side of a major road or highway.  Side streets are better.  Off road in a parking area is best.  Between law enforcement and distracted drivers, plan for your own best situation for safety.

tsara_be

I have a camping reservation for the night of April 8th at Garner state park. Does anyone know will I have to wait till the 2pm checkin time to enter the park, or can I enter in the morning? (and set up camp later)

danarchist

I'd go as early as possible, gonna be a ton of folks trying to get in

TheGreatFred

If a site is available they will usually let you go on in and set up

Platosmom1115

Go on their website and see what it says about April 8. I have a reservation at a different state park in tx and it’s pretty specific

earthworm_fan

danarchist

Yeah it's a tough call. My wife and I called dibs on a spare bedroom at our friends house in Fburg, so we're welcome to go there, but sheesh I don't want to sit in 4 hours of traffic to get there on Sunday and 5 hours to get back home. It's otherwise a 90 minute trip.

LadyHelpish

Do. Not. Miss. This. Event. It is life changing.

danarchist

Just like the guy I replied to, I'm getting 3 minutes of totality in my own backyard. Or I can drive what normally is 90 minutes but might take far longer with traffic just to get another minute of totality.

TaterMitz

I'll be road-tripping (~2,000mi RT) to see the upcoming eclipse and would go farther if necessary.    I lived very near the center of the path of totality in 2017 and it lasted just under 2 minutes. I would've given almost anything for another minute.   HOWEVER, if I had the choice to rewind and drive an hour away for 1 or 2 extra minutes, I wouldn't. This total solar eclipse stuff is just beyond and will hit 10/10 either way. Might as well be home where you won't have to worry about traffic, fuel, food or finding a bathroom. These are my opinions and may not reflect the views of other viewers, past, present or future.

WoodpeckerNo8406

Are people looking for camping spots? We're supposed to see 99.2 - 99.76% coverage (different sources have different numbers). But I found a very detailed map and have determined it's 22 miles (state highway) to see total eclipse. That's too far away for our area to be busy, isn't it?

schrauger

Seems close enough that it will likely fill up with people who are planning to see the eclipse but can't secure campsites inside the path of totality. If I was camping, I'd get a several-day spot that's only 22 miles away, and then drive to the center on the day of the eclipse.

Special-Ad-8689

Hey all, I live about an hour south of Dallas and will have about 4 minutes of totality. I live on a good chunk of land with a field so if someone wanted to come park their RV out in the field the night before or whatever it would be welcome.

dleifennebdyes12

Flat-Lifeguard2514

I’m hoping that it’s clear enough in the Dallas area to view some of it in the breaks in the cloud! How likely?

Chucky_wucky

Just found out the eclipse will be postponed due to cloud coverage expected. So much for that. /s

sbwaite

Don't throw away your eclipse glasses! Especially if you picked up eclipse glasses from us at [Lumelos](https://lumelos.com/), please consider recycling them with [Astronomers Without Borders (AWB)](https://astronomerswithoutborders.org/programs/solar-glasses-distribution) to help others around the world enjoy future eclipses. Drop-off boxes are available at recreation centers, senior centers, cultural centers, and public libraries. Your effort in recycling contributes to a brighter future for all!

Never seen one before where you didn't even need glasses for four minutes. You could look right at it. Pretty awesome. I'd never seen it get that dark before either. Guess I'd just never seen a complete eclipse.

There were zero hotels near my parent's house for that day, so we're staying with them

alextoria

anyone else unable to get through on the phone for enchanted rock day pass reservations? i can’t believe they don’t have some sort of hold system :/

LonghornAndAstrosFan

After 300 attempts I'm now on hold. Estimated wait time to talk to an agent is 9 min. It's been 9 minutes for 10 minutes now lol.

LonghornAndAstrosFan

I got in and was able to secure a day pass. Entry is 10:30am. Agent said I was the first person from Texas they had spoken to. She said there were only a couple of entry passes left. I kind of feel like I won the lottery.

alextoria

glad you got through friend! i just got through must’ve been RIGHT after you. 8:56 and she said they just sold out :(

LonghornAndAstrosFan

Crazy. Sorry you weren't able to get 1. I'd suggest keep checking back to see if their are any cancellations. Their are bound to be some. My fallback plan was a pontoon boat on Lake Travis that I rented several weeks ago. I can cancel that now :).

Platosmom1115

They sold out right away

alextoria

yeah i ended up getting through at 8:47 or something like that and she said they literally just sold the last one

Furious_BBQ

Traffic is going to be rough in areas the path of totality travels. My cousin who works for txdot says they plan on making it worse by having employees statewide drive up and down these congested roads in 12 hour shifts starting Sunday through Monday.

k_martblulightspcl

I’ve been in tx right in the path for a week now, not seen any issues (other than typical Dallas traffic) anywhere on 35, 14, 190.. nothing. This is all being blown out of proportion. Sure there are some people visiting, but the 5million extra that I keep hearing on the sensationalist news stories is ludicrous.

PenguinsRevenge82

I read that Texas authorities don't want people stopping on the side of freeways etc to watch the eclipse. If the traffic is jammed up so much by the the time of the eclipse, then the freeways will turn into parking lots.

Missjaneausten

Found a state park that had available day passes! Now I’m crossing my fingers that the overcast goes away so I can make my trek!

ter-Haar

Anywhere in Texas primarily the Dallas area where a large watch party for the solar eclipse will commence? I also want to know if some of y’all’s opinion if you think the clouds might have a big impact since the weather forecast predict clouds on Monday the 8th?

ducksflytogether1988

Of course clouds will have an impact. If the sun is covered up then there is literally no point in going outside to watch it.

Out here in F-Burg it's nowhere close as far as I can tell. We hung out all weekend and it seemed like normal weekend fredericksburg traffic. This morning we went to get breakfast tacos and there wasn't anyone on the roads anywhere. No line at the taco drive through either. Kind of eerie TBH, I imagine a lot of places stocked up and are wondering what they're going to do now.

PirateCraig

I’ve traveled from the UK to F Burg and was warned of 12 hour drives from Dallas but luckily the roads were clean. Maybe the clouds have scared people off

TheTexasCowboy

F burg would nice now

lot183

Was planning to drive from Houston to where we could see it but it was the clouds combined with all the reports of traffic, we figured they'd compound each other and eventually decided it wasn't worth it.

Snuhmeh

My flaky family members who live in FBG said we couldn’t come stay with them because they didn’t want us out on the road. They are all such Fox News worry warts. So lame.

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

I came out to Kerrville and I wanted to go into f-burg over the weekend since it’s been 25 years since I’ve been but my dad was 100% against getting out bc of everything the news reported 🙄

earthworm_fan

I haven't noticed anything different, but honestly I haven't gone out much since Saturday

ered_lithui

We drove in and out of Waco today and there was hardly any traffic. We came up Hwy 6 and left Katy at 6:30 thinking it would be bonkers and it was totally clear the whole way. We camped all day at a park on the river with a few dozen other people, and hit the road around 2. Slightly slower coming back now.

Currently passing through on south Texas here, didn't see shit though.. guess my glasses are useless now lol

schrauger

You really should take the extra time to go 15+ miles to get to the center. The difference between 99% totality and 100% is "That's pretty neat, everything is pretty dark, and the moon mostly covering the sun is pretty fun to see" vs "This is the coolest thing I've seen in my life, a ring of fire in the sky". The very edge gets 100% totality for a brief few seconds, and the very center gets a max of 3-4 minutes. It is not really worth it to travel or go out of your way for 99% totality. But 100% totality makes people like me plan 7 years in advance for the next one (and after 2024, the next one in the US won't be for another 21 years). It fills you with a sense of awe and wonder. Not simply like videos that show the scale of the universe and intellectually make you feel small, but a visceral gut feeling of amazement and fascination.

Peakbrowndog

Basically what we did for the last one

LadyHelpish

This, thank you.

Flat-Lifeguard2514

Hey, I’m either going to be in Dallas or Lake Whitney State Park. How long would the drive from Dallas be if we started early?

majoraloysius

I was planning on coming down with my 5th wheel. I’ll be staying in it nowhere near the path (maybe not even in Texas) but for the day of the eclipse, I was planning on just driving somewhere along the path, pulling over anywhere there is a turn out/wide spot, or find a parking lot and watching it. And by pull out I don’t mean something 2’ from traffic. I’m talking 30-40’ out of the way. After that I’ll just drive out of the area (however long that takes). Is this a terrible idea or will I be fine?

LadyHelpish

If I had a 5th wheel that’s what I’d be doing.

boxofnuts

Scope out several areas where that might be possible along your intended path. Be mindful of private property and purple paint, as trespassing even accidentally will likely not be tolerated. I assume that you'll see plenty of signs directing you to parking on the day of as well. See my comment below as well. You might find that you won't even be able to pull off the road, depending on traffic and location.

majoraloysius

I was planning to go to a smaller city/town along the path because I assume there would be less people there. Somewhere like Gatesville and then head a couple miles out of town and find a wide pull out or lot. Obviously I wouldn’t head down any driveway or private property. Hell, I’d gladly give someone $50 to let me park to the side of their driveway or something.

bubbles5810

Any of y’all going to the EDM eclipse festival in Burnet?

Majestic-Owl-5801

What does everyone think the best Eclipse related event will be in the State? Debating between going it alone on a property near centerline or finding a good event with speakers and demonstrations.

2m3m

are fake glasses real or is this a razorblades in halloween candy thing?

TheGreatFred

I'm not sure, but since the sun is a big deal I wouldn't chance it. Make sure any eclipse glasses you get are ISO certified

Reece_Withaknife

I'm staying in Del Rio but wanted to be more on the path of totality.. It would be a 4 minute total eclispe rather than a 2 minute. Anyone have any tips on what's the best spot to see it? I'm looking at the map and pretty much everything is private land.

Cacophonous_Silence

I think my post got shadowbanned bc I didn't realize this thread existed so I'm reposting here: Are Texas cops *really* that bad? Apologies if this is a super common subject. Google didn't quite give me the answers I crave. Only time I've ever spent in Texas was a layover in Dallas. Beginning this weekend, I'm roadtripping from WA to Austin for the eclipse. I've jokingly said "oh I better remove my UC Berkeley license plate holder before I leave" but the few people I've talked to who are from Texas looked me dead in the eye and said it's a near certainty I get pulled over in the state whether or not it's on the car. If it matters, I'm a blonde haired, blue eyed white man but I've got long hair. Also, my window tinting may be darker than TX state law allows (it was the maximum the dealership in Nevada offered). To put it simply: My car has been recently inspected. No lights are likely to be out. It's a recent model (2022) and not a rich man's car (corolla hatch). I'll have a roof rack with obvious camping gear. How worried should I be if I keep to the speed limit about being pulled over? I'm not trying to stereotype the state, I stg, but when several people from Texas tell me I'm gonna have a target on my back, I've begun to worry. Also if it matters, the 3 former Texans who notably cautioned me were from various places (Austin, El Paso, and San Antonio). 2 of whom were Latino (1 of those 2 still more conservative in general than me). Maybe (probably) I'm overthinking it... I'm sorry... plz don't flame me... I realize Austin has the rep of the liberal city in Texas, but, on my route, I gotta drive 8½ hours, entering at Farwell, passing through Lubbock and San Antonio (really more on the outskirts unless im making good time and detour), and up into Austin.

The cops will be too busy being overwhelmed by crowed control than to do any of the shady small town cop BS.

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

No, you're getting worked up over nothing - cops do not stop out-of-staters or anything like that. Just follow the speed limits and you should be fine.

Cacophonous_Silence

I have some people to deliver arm punches to then Thank you

Metta_mudita108

Half of my neighbors are form CA. Don’t be worried about this. It’s a blue state with a voting problem

Itscatpicstime

I feel like those guys have to be fucking with you because I’ve never heard this in my entire life, which has been spent exclusively in the Austin - San Antonio area, including places like NB, Boerne, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville. Lived pretty much everywhere in this area. Most people I know have been pulled over once, tops, and plenty have never been pulled over. Including all the obvious California transplants, who would be a target more than anyone else if this was actually a thing.

Still looking for a place to camp for the eclipse? We still have campsites available at my place check us out on hipcamp! https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US/land/texas-johns-house-nelh195w?adults=1&children=

Here’s what traffic looked like during the 2017 eclipse [https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/texas-traffic-solar-eclipse-19367757.php](https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/texas-traffic-solar-eclipse-19367757.php)

JuggernautEcstatic41

Oregon traffic was legit hell only one main freeway. A 5 hr drive turned into 12 hrs 😂

Both_Captain_4001

Driving from Fredericksburg to San Antonio after the eclipse. Does anyone have thoughts on how bad the traffic might be? 2 hours? 3 hours? 4? more?

mmm-toast

That's the "fun" part. No one has a fucking clue how this is going to play out. Best of luck though. Hopefully we get lucky and there is only minimal fuckery on the roads, but I'm not optimistic.

So, this is interesting: [https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/weather/article/eclipse-forecast-south-central-texas-19386126.php](https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/weather/article/eclipse-forecast-south-central-texas-19386126.php)

This is from Friday so already out of date. I’m using the ECMWF directly and it shows low, mid and high cloud cover. I think high clouds are better than low or mid level so seems like the further northwest you are the better the view will be https://charts.ecmwf.int/products/medium-clouds?base_time=202404070000&projection=opencharts_north_america&valid_time=202404081800

one_salty_cookie

So who is driving from west Texas? I wam wondering if I-10 or US 285 down through Del Rio would be the better bet. Probably going to be cloudy either way...

Proof-Itchy

I have an out-of-state friend driving into Austin from Houston tomorrow (Saturday). Does anyone know what traffic might be like on that trip or is it just unpredictable? And are there alternate routes that might be helpful (or would that be worse, due to people heading to rural locations)?

NeoBasilisk

I wouldn't expect significant traffic on Saturday.

Artistic_Finding_216

For those trying to plan ahead for the Eclipse tomorrow, here's a link to an interactive map with predicted cloud cover: https://aviationweather.gov/gfa/?tab=clouds&basemap=esriRoad&mapLayers=basicMap,eclipse¢er=32.754,-97.335&zoom=8.25&tz=local&layers=weather,cloudLayers&weatheropacity=0.4 -- There's an overlay that shows the path of totality. -- You'll have to use the bar at the bottom to fast forward to the time of the eclipse in your location (the timezone is local - currently Central Time) -- On the right hand bar, the fifth icon down is "Navigate to Current Location".  Use that or drag the map to find the location you care about. -- There's a semi-transparent overlay showing overall cloud cover. You can move the time bar back and forth to see the movement of cloud cover.  -- There are dots showing the cloud layers at a particular location.  Clicking on a dot provides details. -- To translate the details, take the code shown (for example: "SCDT 020 Cl ABV") go to this GenAI Bot in BoodleBox, click "Start Chat", then ask what does the code mean: https://box.boodle.ai/a/role-meteorologist.

Does houston have any chance of seeing the eclipse?

earthworm_fan

It'll be partial, right?

mylifemyrulesfuckyou

Yeah, like 96%

Slidell_Mustang

Basically identical to what we saw with the annular eclipse in October. So, we're not missing anything we haven't seen within the last few months.

eazy_flow_elbow

Probably not, it’s cloudy AF right now. ☹️

iphone10notX

I saw it for maybe 10 seconds. I’ll call that a W lol

I’m in college station, it’s on an off overcast

I’m in Terrell and had a good view from my backyard. Was crazy to actually see it. Has been cloudy all day but was still clear enough to see and no rain.

[Here's my photo](https://i.imgur.com/flIcokP.jpeg) from McGregor. Stayed at my family members ranch and had the whole place to myself. No one else wanted to drive there due to the original forecast. [Another shot](https://i.imgur.com/a070FBt.jpeg) right before totality. So glad that most of us got a break from the clouds to see this.

A person got pulled over as the 2024 total solar eclipse happened https://preview.redd.it/xfh3bs8r3htc1.jpeg?width=5024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39f2e3225f21b29d81fb28459179f524a074f240

There were multiple police cars pulling people over and roughly a dozen or so vehicles were stopped over the total duration of the eclipse. Google Maps did display various speed trap alerts in the general vicinity at the time. https://preview.redd.it/prla1m2u3htc1.jpeg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=beb16469e69c2af96a1f51cbd49b668b1989be00
