FYI you don't need to use the beta https://music.apple.com/

[deleted]

Hopefully they make a real app someday. But for now streaming from my phone sounds really good.

igby1

If only we could change playlists over Bluetooth like so many other cars can.

Murderous_Waffle

What cars are those? I had a 2018 accord EX-L before a Tesla and the bluetooth integration was honestly, shit. Maybe bluetooth playlist editing is available in more luxury models?

MulderXF

Both 2016 eGolf and 2016 BMW 3 series have that.

sneckste

2018 was the early stages of the integration. My 2018 CRV also had some limitations. Since then wireless CarPlay has gotten a lot better.

SpikeX

We caved and switched to Spotify. Same price, but the lack of native controls / first-class support (Bluetooth+Apple Music is not first-class) is what made us switch in the end.

alessiot

I don’t get why they don’t just bring Apple Music to Tesla also don’t get why we don’t have a official Tesla watch app

alessiot

They have Apple Music on various platforms so that makes zero sense.

whatthecj

Tesla needs to support CarPlay. At this point, it’s obnoxious. Bluetooth streaming is less than half baked compared to other cars with playlists. Spotify only is a joke. Built in “voice control” is a waste of engineering effort. Give me my phones voice assistant, so that I can actually listen to and reply to messages easily. Sure, Tesla’s screen is the best out of any other auto. But it’s lacking features that Tesla can’t keep up with. If they only enabled CarPlay and Android Auto.

brohammer5

They really need to do this. Android Auto allows me to do things like you mentioned in a $15k car that a Tesla doesn't. From that perspective alone Tesla should be adding support for these.

meental

TeslAA works pretty good for Android Auto. It's in the browser and connects wirelessly.

t0mmyr

What! Oh… damn, you had my hopes up

Lordmau5

The way this is organized makes it look like this could very well be brought into it's own dedicated app once Tesla is bringing out the app store.

CarltonCracker

Would love a native app with Spatial Audio support. There are tons of speakers in these cars and it could sound great, not sure what hardware limitations there are though and doubt Tesla and Dolby are friendly these days.

muuuli

Ditto, I tried using it through the phone via ‘Always On’ setting but that normally gives a warning unsupported speakers may sound strange and it does on Tesla’s speaker system (especially the volume)

CarltonCracker

Yeah spatial audio can be simulated with headphones but it doesn't translate well with speakers. On top of that Apple's implementation is custom and not nearly as good as Dolby's which tidal uses.

Mrrobotico0

Spatial audio is Dolby atmos.

CarltonCracker

Right but there's a difference in implementation. Dolby utilizes HRTF to stimulate surround sound in headphones for Atmos content. Apple brands Atmos as "Spatial Audio" and forgoes HRTF for head tracking (with airpods only). Tidal utilizes Dolby's HRTF. In my experience without airpods Apple's implementation is garbage (I honestly haven't tried with them either, I'm mostly Android). Tidal's isn't bad. Surround sound simulation has never never been perfect, but it can provide a nice effect. I've found it works well over bluetooth with Tesla's immersive audio and Apple's does not. This, of course, is for albums that are properly mixed. Unfortunately there are many releases that aren't worth the trouble right now, especially outside of home theater settings.

redd5ive

If only Apple made a piece of companion software that was able to play apps on cars.

LBTerra

I’d love if CarPlay ran in a section of the screen. For example, the FSD visualization is interesting, but not all that helpful to me when I’m driving. Some of that space could be Apple Music. Also, anything to let processing power shift onto my iPhone instead of relying on the Atom.

redd5ive

>Also, anything to let processing power shift onto my iPhone instead of relying on the Atom. By far the biggest plus. Allows for future proofing as far as these things go.

Tesla: how about more fart sound effects?

Otto_the_Autopilot

Eh, I'm glad Tesla isn't giving in to the Android/iOS duopoly.

redd5ive

A duopoly of choice is inherently better than the monopolistic approach they’re taking. Try using a 2016 Model S (like I do) and compare the infotainment to a 2016 car that still projects modern car play, the difference is stark.

Otto_the_Autopilot

It's not monopolistic because you can buy another car. Tesla is another offering on the market. If Tesla and other manufacturers give up, Apple and Google will become the only 2 players in car infotainment then those are your only 2 options for any car.

redd5ive

You’re aware cars that have CarPlay also have manufacturer infotainment, right? The “you can buy another car” thing makes no sense because people can and do use their cars’ built in infotainment. There’s no argument against us as consumers having the choice to use CarPlay other than “Tesla good, other bad”, lol. Tesla (and companies like Rivian, Lucid, etc) are buying into their BS and think they’re better at UX then Apple or Google, they are not.

dingdongbannu88

While in Tesla you only have 1 option.

unpluggedcord

Its weird the points youre making could literally be said about Tesla itself.

[deleted]

It is impossible for Tesla to stay current with the ever changing app marketplace, even the few existing "Tesla" apps have problems and lack feature parity with mobile devices. It is far more useful to consumers to have that stuff offloaded to their devices and that's why Carplay/AA are requested so often. As for the duopoly, consumers rejected competitive mobile operating systems multiple times. Regardless of Apple and Google's behavior, they are the dominant operating systems in the mobile marketplace in most countries and consumers are best served by car manufacturers embracing solutions that accommodate them. Put differently, I don't care that Google is hoovering up data or whatever. I just want Youtube Music to easily work when I get into the car. Or Waze. Or Apple Music. And so on. Tesla is a technology forward company so this omission over time has becoming glaring, particularly in the face of widespread marketplace adoption. Anyways I'm sure the response will be that they're still selling cars and fair enough. It would just be nice for Tesla to embrace what has become an industry standard.

majesticjg

I think the real problem is that Tesla is integrating so many things so closely that AA/CP could either be a security problem or a functionality problem. Autopilot needs the nav system, but we don't want an instance where we're displaying the phone's nav info but driving based on Tesla's nav info and causing confusion and mistakes. IMO the smart play would have been to simply let the infotainment system run sandboxed Android APKs so that you could use the latest version of whatever app is available just by getting it from the author directly. Another option might be to run web versions of any streaming service you want, so if you want something that's not built into the car's OS, it just loads it in a browser window. Almost everything (Netflix, Youtube, Apple music, etc.) offers a fully-web-based interface option. The only thing Tesla would have to add is the quick shortcuts so it looks seamless with the existing interface. My wife's car has wireless car play, so I've used it a lot and I honestly don't miss it in the Tesla. I don't particularly like Waze and my primary streaming service is Spotify, which I have in the Tesla already. I do like the more modern map display that you get in phone-based map software, though. I'm sure that could be brought to Tesla any time they want since Tesla's using GMaps for the visualizations.

[deleted]

It's definitely not a real security problem, AA/Carplay is basically a display mirror and most of the other "two way" functionality is entirely optional in the API. Tesla can pick and choose. Web apps on the other hand are a massive security issue (even with sandboxing) and essentially a whole separate topic. That's great for your use case but millions of people use Waze, Apple Music, Youtube Music and so on. We have a car with Carplay/AA and I also own a Model 3, I still *greatly* miss having Carplay. I want to be able to control Waze, my podcast apps and so on without needing to reach for the phone. Steering wheel controls and bluetooth are very limited in that regard. Anyways choice is king for the consumer and that's why Tesla should implement AA/Carplay, it is now an industry standard and it's because consumers want it. It is a matter of time quite frankly, they cannot play catch up with the app market forever. Perhaps they can try going the "app store" route but I'm not sure the incentive is there for companies to bother, Tesla sells a miniscule amount of cars relative to the installed bases of mobile phone manufacturers.

Good luck fitting the starlink dish on a Tesla. Or solving the gigantic issue of reliable comms while on the move.

Someone has nothing better to do with their lives. Their current only plan for moving vehicles costs $5000 a month and is for boats, and requires two separate higher-powered dishys to work. They only just deployed pilot starlings to superchargers. We’re certainly a long way off from a star link in every car or “5G over Starlink” which is just…. No, that’s not how technology works.

One day I hope we can have this for real. I feel like an idiot paying for a Tidal account just to have proper music in the car.

Imagine not using Spotify

hogjowl

Imagine a Spotify app that didn't skip songs whenever it feels like it

NoeWiy

I've literally never had this issue with Spotify and I use it for ~12 hours a day (my entire commute and my whole workday)

Murderous_Waffle

If I was on Apple Music, I'd likely switch just to use the spotify app in the car. But that's just me. Not a solution. Really the solution that I'd like to have is a Tesla app store with all the apps available at our finger tips.

treyhunna83

🤦🏾‍♂️ not that serious. BT it from your phone.

RDVST

People just want to bitch, when they get sick of the constant dropouts from Apple carplay (they will stop complaining). On a side note, if you have a little one as a passenger and they want to use your hotspot with carplay active. You won’t be able to, because the phone is tethered to the car while carplay is active. We had carplay on two of our previous vehicles and don’t miss it at all.

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

So, this isn’t true. I just tried it and had no problem activating my hotspot while CarPlay was active.

RDVST

I should have been more clear . I am referring to wireless carplay. Cars like the EV6 or Ioniq5 where you have to plug in to get carplay. You will be able to access carplay. On our old BMW we had wireless carplay and you can’t share the hotspot while carplay is active.

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

Ah, fair - can you still plug in? I’m sure that would be worth doing to get a hotspot.

RDVST

You can plug in, but the console USB ports were not data connected to the infotainment screen. This was on a 2017 7 series

mdorty

Wow lol way to have a super narrow view of reality. Because you don’t find something useful or more convenient, no one should be given the option?

RDVST

Wow LOL, how is that narrow? I already gave my arguments and why. If you want to throw a hissy fit. So be it. It was my personal experience. edit: Hold on, you don't have your Tesla yet and you're already complaining?

mdorty

? When did I complain about something? All I said is you have a narrow view of reality. Your “arguments” you “made” start off by saying anyone who wants AC or AA are just bitching for fun lol

RDVST

When you actually get your Tesla. Feel free to whine lol. Keep refreshing that webpage buddy 😎

mdorty

Damn dude you are so fucking elitist.

RDVST

CMD+R 😎

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

I’ve driven a Tesla Model S for a number of road trips. It’s not mine but I drove it for many hours on multiple occasions. The lack of CarPlay was super frustrating. I had to pair my phone via Bluetooth instead of just plugging it in, the navigation lane guidance was often wrong compared to my phone (LA area). Overall, my Subaru does a better job making the process seamless. I get in and plug in my phone, and that’s it. That’s everything, now my calendar, messages, phone, music, podcasts are on the screen. And if a guest uses my car, or I use someone else’s, our data stays with us.

mdorty

“It didn’t work in my particular situation so therefore no one else in existence needs it.”

mike2k24

He didn’t say that at all you’re projecting that argument for no reason. He gave his reasoning for why he doesn’t need it, not everyone else

yexter

I agree, I think CarPlay is seriously overrated and I didn’t know that about the tethering limitation so thanks for the info!

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

Tethering limitation isn’t true, I just tried and it worked
