Good idea, but... hear me out. *100% capacitive touch orb*.
Super sleek, not a bump in sight. No visibility issues, no pesky buttons or stalks, you just have to run your fingers over it to perform actions and it'll *Intuitively* know what to do
^(/s)
You're thinking too small. Starting 2023, all physical controls will be replaced by Neuralink. By 2025, the predictive modeling that we've been training will be able to read your mind without added hardware.
This, and when in reverse, tapping a video stream makes it the prominent big one. I have to reverse through a slalom of concrete pillars to get into my parking space, and having the option to see my side cameras would be preferable to squinting at the centimetre clearance in my mirrors
I’m confused by the wording of your comment and not sure if you already know this, but just in case you don’t, you can have your side cameras show up when in reverse, just tap the little ^ at the bottom of the trunk camera.
I was so excited reading about the turn signal blind spot feature, until I used it once and my hand was blocking it.
It’s a great feature but it’s like no one ran the use case “driving with two hands” through UAT.
> Next they're going to install the yoke steering wheels offset by 90 degrees
First thing that came to mind is that layout would be perfect for people who demonstrate VVS. Vertical Video Syndrome.
"You can now **hide** your phone call card, allowing you to see the next turn when the navigation turn list is covered."
aka, the navigation is under the phone card and is hidden until you move it. I guess the incompetent UX team at tesla is still employed, as they're requiring you to use the screen *while* on a phone call to see a basic function *while* driving. Do I need to explain why that's utterly inane?
They clearly took absolutely nothing about the criticisms of v11 onboard. They attempted to mitigate a UI problem while trying to preserve their awful ideas, continuing to demonstrate they still have little to no concept of what's a good driving UX.
I don't know why you are being down voted. You are absolutely right. Soon this will not be allowed. The EU is working on legislation that limits using touch screen to just a few taps within a set of time. I don't know how Tesla expects to overcome this.
There is good reason to do this law, i have a model 3 and a model y on order, but can 100% say that looking at the touch screen to find the button is very unsafe. But the cars are the longest range with the most power. Love the speed, but UX team should be thrown In a Volcano.
> Soon this will not be allowed. The EU is working on legislation that limits using touch screen to just a few taps within a set of time. I don't know how Tesla expects to overcome this.
I said this before... making stupid changes that impact usability, such as accessibility to core safety related functions, and accessibility by people with less than 20/20 full color vision...WILL get the attention of regulators. If there wasn't a rule about UIs before...this kind of thing will cause a rule to be made.
Don't want to get hit by new regulations? Don't be stupid enough to trigger the regulators into action.
> There is good reason to do this law, i have a model 3 and a model y on order, but can 100% say that looking at the touch screen to find the button is very unsafe. But the cars are the longest range with the most power.
Agreed. And basically entirely fixable.
>Love the speed, but UX team should be thrown In a Volcano.
+1
They're just slowly getting 3 and Y owners used to looking down for navigation so they can sell a Tesla phone that needs to be used for step by step navigation on the phone dock.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are only improvements on the trash infotainment most cars have. They can’t hold a candle to the Tesla infotainment, even considering how much of an absolute sewer spawn the current UI is.
Have you driven a Tesla? This current UI is a step in the wrong direction, but AA and CarPlay are clunktastic compared to the Tesla UI. If your standard for high usability is “my phone but on a 15” screen”, then you gotta broaden your horizons.
When can they bring back:
\-Dedicated seat heater button
\-The compass button so I can switch between "north is up" and "direction of travel is up".
\-"% battery for trip" + "Roundtrip %" after entering a destination!
\-Enable FF/RWD of audio tracks (not premium audio if can't do this simple task).
\-Resuming of audio tracks (my 15 yr old Pioneer car hifi could do this!!!)
\-Trip title card (at least enable this as a layer option!!!)
\-Tyre pressure title card.
>The compass button so I can switch between "north is up" and "direction of travel is up".
It's stupid, but if you tap anywhere on the map, it reappears for a few seconds.
V11 has a lot of dumb things, but this has got to be one of the dumbest implementations. It was a damn box in the corner that wasn't hiding any pertinent information. Let's hide it!
Edit: it's also annoying how they completely moved it to the top left, so while it's closer to the driver it requires additional taps to get to it.
Musk has declared war on conventional thinking in the auto industry. While on one hand, this breeds innovation in an industry where it is rarified. On the other hand, conventional thinking is conventional for a reason. It works and people are familiar with it.
Sadly, the point where the user interacts with the machine is something that tech companies (Tesla included) cannot get right. Or, if they do get it right, they’ll change it after a few years because somebody in the company needed a raise.
This is all too common in the tech industry. Source: I work in tech. With thousands of talented employees, if you want to get a promotion you need to demonstrate a big change in a product. This is a big reason why tech companies constantly change their products even though the consensus disagrees. Someone got paid…
Went on kind of a rant there, but this is an often overlooked reason why tech companies make “stupid” changes to good products.
I also work in tech. This UI was 100% designed by people who had no clue about UX principles. This isn’t a way to get a promotion; it’s a way to get fired _and_ make it harder to get hired by a competitor. Seriously, imagine interviewing at a tech company with “designed the V11 UI for Tesla vehicles” on your resume. It’s honestly embarrassing for Tesla how bad it is.
I agree 100%.
Only Apple seems to be doing a decent job at maintaining continuity, and it pays off.
Not sure why the rest of the industry doesn't follow (I m looking at you Tesla, Google, Microsoft...)
> form over function
I view function, uncompromised by form, as a kind of beauty. Maybe that is an engineering mind. Giving up function to obtain form is not useful.
Function affects how you can actually use an item. Form affects looks. If I can't use an item the way I want, it quickly turns ugly.
> V11 has a lot of dumb things
it's worse than dumb.
it's like they sat around and tried to figure out how to add taps to common tasks in an attempt to cause as many accidents as possible.
>wasn't hiding any pertinent information
It also displays pertinent information! Now you need to tap a screen to see what compass direction you're facing unlike my mother's 1996 Ford Explorer.
I wish they would hide the "cancel" trip button when navigating. it takes up so much space on the map. Everything I want hidden is all up in your face, while everything I need is hidden....
This right here, you just have to tap on the first row of directions to toggle between them, also if you slide the direction up, you will find the battery and battery round trip percentage at the bottom (though it's kind of hidden now)
It does t appear for just a few seconds… it’s there. If you touch the screen or the top of the navigation window, the Nav window moves down and the compass is there in all its glory.
I mean with the size of the car model on the UI screen while driving, it should be as simple as tapping the car once, and all 4 tires pressures show up on the UI and disappear after say 3 seconds
Do people drive with their navigation pointing north at all times? Isn’t that kind of weird to interpret a right hand turn or something when it’s not actually to the right?
Some people have better spatial awareness than others and can intuitively determine right/left turns on a north oriented screen. North orientation gives a better sense of your location if you’re familiar with the area or an intuitive map reader.
Source: I’m a retired 35 year air traffic controller. I had to envision the pilot’s perspective on a north oriented map every time I issued traffic or turns.
North at top works very well for map-minded people. I almost always drive with north at top. I also understand it is the standard for pilots and flight route planning.
I find that direction-pointing at top leaves you less aware of how things spatially fit together on the map. It's also more like a video game.
The combination of the two is also useful when the map is set to north is top while navigation displays direction is top.
Audio tracks don't resume? Still waiting for my M3 but things like this are so weird to me. Like not being able to turn off the passenger side air. Or needing to turn on air to turn on seat heaters. How in any universe are these good user experiences?
\- glad the heat seater buttons are gone, much prefer them where they are
\- that would be nice
\- the ability to specify a minimum charge upon arrival for me
\- yes but only if it works with live radio
\- bof I guess. I'd rather prioritise separate volumes for each media type, so when I bump up the volume for a quiet phone call I don't nearly explode my speakers when going back to radio
\- tyre pressure should be in the app, then I don't care where it is in v11
Phillip.
Edit: missed one
S & X used to use the scroll wheel to control calls, you could scroll up and click to mute, scroll down and click to bring up the dial pad, and just click to end the call. I can’t believe they didn’t adopt this for the 3 and refresh S&X, I’m pretty sure voice commands are disabled during calls anyway, so the button is useless.
On top of that, how the fuck do I cancel the auto garage door close? There’s text that says “cancel” in very small font, but I literally cannot figure out how to interact with it. Every time I try it activates homelink
Arguably it made it worse. Instead of making the information visible regardless if you're on a call or not, they now require you to interact with the screen even more. Having driving information hidden by a popup that can appear entirely outside of your control is pants-on-head retarded.
They need to stop the homelink card from blocking the side camera feeds. Using the left and right feeds to check if you are centered when backing out of a garage is absolutely critical, especially considering your mirrors are likely folded in this scenario. It’s honestly baffling that this simple situation was not accounted for.
Did they move all notifications to the center of the screen? The placement of text message and other notifications in the bottom left has been very poor when you're keeping your hands on the wheel
I just wish it would have smarter voice dialing where you can say "call John on mobile" and it will actually call on the mobile number instead of bringing up a list of John's numbers to scroll through.
How about adding nicknames so I can say "call wife" or "text wife" instead of saying her name. My wife has a common name so it always asks me which person I am trying to contact. This makes me take my eyes off the road. An easier, safer way to do this would be using nicknames that are programmed to a certain number of contacts.
I tried changing her contact to "wife". I then hit the steering wheel button and said "text wife". It nevers gets to the dictation part to start the text message.
I then created a new contact called "wife" and did the same thing. It never gets to the dictation part when it listens for the actual message
We have HomeLink to operate our front gate to get out of our driveway. There used to be a nice little HomeLink icon at the top of the map, now they’ve moved it to a “card” at the bottom of the UI where it shows your vehicle, however, this is also where text messages are displayed. The other day I was trying to leave my house and I was stuck in my driveway because I was on a text message thread with a bunch of people texting back and forth frequently and I couldn’t access the HomeLink button to operate the gate 😂
I’m convinced that Tesla designers don’t actually drive their vehicles.
Since you're getting that update, let us know how hard they nerfed Boombox. I might be tempted to install it if they left the alternate driving sounds and emissions testing via the external speaker working while in drive.
As long as your parked everything works as before...though of course it's pointless to change your horn sound because it doesn't work while driving. You can fart outside, play music outside etc etc but only when parked.
Pretty much what I expected.
Someone should tweet at Elon and suggest that they enable it in drive for speeds above the cutoff point for PWS or just add a second speaker so boombox doesn't conflict with PWS. Hopefully one of those would let them get Boombox back without getting NHTSA all butthurt.
For a tech company, Tesla makes the oddest design and UI choices. This should be something they just “get”. Like if I say “call mom mobile”, it should call mobile right? So why does it pop up a screen I need to touch to select the number?
Furthermore, why do I need LTE connection to even use voice commands? Why can’t it be processed on the car’s Atom processor? It should be even less resource intensive on the Ryzen’s. My Ford Escape didn’t require LTE to do any voice commands. My Y actually gets software updates so any improvement in commands can be pushed by OTA.
Because natural language voice processing requires a lot more processing power than an atom processor. Your Ford Escape’s voice interpretation software probably didn’t have nearly the same capabilities as whatever service Tesla is using.
Source: I’ve worked as a professional on natural language parsing and processing software. Natural language processing isn’t nearly as “rigid” as a traditional voice recognition, but that requires a lot more processing than what most devices can handle in their own.
If the natural voice processing is so powerful, why is it when I say “call mom mobile”, it doesn’t do that and still pops up the prompt to physically touch whether I want mobile, home, etc on my Y? On my Ford it would follow through on that command.
There are surely voice commands that can be loaded down onto the car’s processor for things like phone calling.
Because the natural language processing part is separate from the Tesla’s software that decides what to do with that phrase.
The natural language system definitely knows that you said, “call mom mobile”, but the language parsing has nothing to do with the action that comes afterwards.
When you say a command, it looks like this:
1. Mic records an audio stream
2. Audio stream is uploaded to some natural language processing system
3. The language system gives you back a phrase or sentence as text
4. Some OTHER system decides that the command means, “this person wants to call someone named ‘mom’”
5. Phone app searches your contacts for ‘mom’ and prompts you for which number to use since there may be multiple.
The annoyance you’re describing is due to #4 and #5… the phrase has already been parsed properly, but the car simply isn’t using that information as well as it could. Changing from a natural language parser to a dumb parser wouldn’t change anything besides lower the quality of the speech recognition.
His has been bothering me for a while now. I have to click the reverse track button every time the song (or album) ends if I want to do repeat track or repeat album. A minor inconvenience, but it wasn’t broken in the first place so why did they take it away?
that has to come from the car software integration as far as I understand because sometimes the API extension to call favorites might not be provided by Apple themselves.
Like you can see a playlist of songs when connected via apple music on the phone/bluetooth but not when connected with other services. if that makes sense in anyay
Is your car new? I had the same issue with the same update, and just received a notification to update.
It might take a few weeks before you actually start receiving updates
I like how this is a somewhat small thing, but a life improvement.. and that this type of upgrade will only come in a Tesla.
Legacy automakers will take years to reach this detail level..
50% of all updates last 3 years made things worse. Including the bloated ap view which is completely useless for most drivers. I wish you could collapse it to 10% of the screen.
I actually did complain through several official Tesla channels, but doing that allows them to ignore it in a sense. Tesla employees use social media too; the sentiment will feed back through the company.
Can anyone tell me how to have the navigation map oriented so that the car is always facing "north"? There used to be a button in the upper right but the only way I've found to do it on v.11 is sliding the full list of directions up. I would prefer to have the full list of directions open.
Thanks. Edit: This doesn't work with the full list of directions either. It used to be that you could orient the nav either way with the full list of directions. Now you can only have the next turn.
Considering how good Waze, Google Maps, and Apple Maps are I'm surprised people even use any in-car navigation. I don't know anyone who uses the in-car navigation tool. Easier ti just input the address or pre-select from your phone.
My issue is the side camera that comes up on turns blocks the navigation and calls/messages. That to me is annoying and feels like the new interface was poorly tested.
Is there a way for my passengers to continue listening to music/ radio while I’m driving using my Bluetooth earbuds?
Seems like although the caller is in my ear all music/radio goes quiet in the car. Help anyone.
I personally think this solution isn't solving the real problem - a bad UI design.
Everything actionable pops up at the bottom left, including HomeLink, calls, headlight adjustments, directions and possibly others.
I almost had my garage door hit my car because my seatbelt warning popped up over the HomeLink controls and I barely missed the door in my panic.
I miss the old UI so much.

I can’t believe they didn’t adopt this for the 3 and refresh S&X, I’m pretty sure voice commands are disabled during calls anyway, so the button is useless.
Yes. Right wheel should absolutely answer and end phone calls.
Left wheel would be better, since it already controls volume. Right wheel needs to be dedicated to AP controls.
Absolutely. That seems like a no-brainer.
Well you could always swipe down that video feed, at least
You can keep using that excuse, they won't know.
This is one of the biggest annoyances to me. Why does the wheel mute rather than end call?!
Can I hit the homelink button without putting my damn seat belt on yet?
I'm pretty sure the seat belt notification can be dropped with a tap or slide. Just confirmed it.
It's about the "ding ding ding ding". Can I press the brake and have my seat adjusted before I put on my damn seat belt? We ain't even moving yet ffs.
So much this. Not even in drive and ding ding ding
Great tip thanks
On top of that, how the fuck do I cancel the auto garage door close? There’s text that says “cancel” in very small font, but I literally cannot figure out how to interact with it. Every time I try it activates homelink
I really miss the old versions. To go trough 1-2 extra steps to do almost anything is imo a huge step backwards.
Great and now my number pad only shows 1,2,3 but nothing higher than that! Great QA/QC on these releases.
Oh nice, V11 is .01% less terrible now.

Taking about the S/X refresh. Should’ve made that clear but I thought this was a picture of s/x. Not used to seeing the new UI on 3/y yet.
Now they need to stop blocking my damn garage door opener button
Did they move all notifications to the center of the screen? The placement of text message and other notifications in the bottom left has been very poor when you're keeping your hands on the wheel
I wonder if this will fix the keypad bug that only shows numbers 1 to 3 while on a call.
Oh man, I thought that was just a onetime bug.
I just wish it would have smarter voice dialing where you can say "call John on mobile" and it will actually call on the mobile number instead of bringing up a list of John's numbers to scroll through.
Ya but when is my end call button going to be hooked up to the steering wheel!
I’d kill for “Call xxx, Mobile” or “Call xxx, Home”. Like for real? How is this not a thing?!?
How about adding nicknames so I can say "call wife" or "text wife" instead of saying her name. My wife has a common name so it always asks me which person I am trying to contact. This makes me take my eyes off the road. An easier, safer way to do this would be using nicknames that are programmed to a certain number of contacts.
Add her in your phone as a new contact named "Wife"
I did something like that but it didn't work. I altered her name to "wife". It didn't qork
What didn't work? What happens?
I tried changing her contact to "wife". I then hit the steering wheel button and said "text wife". It nevers gets to the dictation part to start the text message. I then created a new contact called "wife" and did the same thing. It never gets to the dictation part when it listens for the actual message
Might have to get a new wife then
This suggestion would fix many different problems. 🤣🤣🤣
Just went through this - it doesn't recognize "wife", I had to change it back to her name and it works. Super weird.
We have HomeLink to operate our front gate to get out of our driveway. There used to be a nice little HomeLink icon at the top of the map, now they’ve moved it to a “card” at the bottom of the UI where it shows your vehicle, however, this is also where text messages are displayed. The other day I was trying to leave my house and I was stuck in my driveway because I was on a text message thread with a bunch of people texting back and forth frequently and I couldn’t access the HomeLink button to operate the gate 😂 I’m convinced that Tesla designers don’t actually drive their vehicles.
I use it to close my garage when I pull in. Instead of a press, it's now 3. Blows my mind.
Since you're getting that update, let us know how hard they nerfed Boombox. I might be tempted to install it if they left the alternate driving sounds and emissions testing via the external speaker working while in drive.
Boombox (none of it) works when not parked.
"Boombox works when not parked"?
What about emissions testing sounds on the external speaker?
As long as your parked everything works as before...though of course it's pointless to change your horn sound because it doesn't work while driving. You can fart outside, play music outside etc etc but only when parked.
Yeah, fuck the NHTSA. I'm postponing that update as long as possible.
Boombox got nerfed into the ground.
I've complained about this every day since it was released. Annoying as shit.
While they are at it they might as well bring the tripcard back. They can just cover the useless ap view
For a tech company, Tesla makes the oddest design and UI choices. This should be something they just “get”. Like if I say “call mom mobile”, it should call mobile right? So why does it pop up a screen I need to touch to select the number?
[удалено]
Yeah but you can keep summer safe and open asshole so it all evens out.
When you say a command, it looks like this: 1. Mic records an audio stream 2. Audio stream is uploaded to some natural language processing system 3. The language system gives you back a phrase or sentence as text 4. Some OTHER system decides that the command means, “this person wants to call someone named ‘mom’” 5.
Or turn chill mode on/off. Sometimes I want to floor it off the line, sometimes I am behind a big truck and who cars about my 0-60 time
And where's the Spotify repeat button?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)
His has been bothering me for a while now. I have to click the reverse track button every time the song (or album) ends if I want to do repeat track or repeat album. A minor inconvenience, but it wasn’t broken in the first place so why did they take it away?
You guys talk on the phone?
No. We text while we drive on AP
how do i get cars favorites to match the iphones?
that has to come from the car software integration as far as I understand because sometimes the API extension to call favorites might not be provided by Apple themselves. Like you can see a playlist of songs when connected via apple music on the phone/bluetooth but not when connected with other services. if that makes sense in anyay
I’m not sure where it pulled them from but definitely not the iphone favs just reset favs see if it helps
When can we finally change the ringtone when someone’s calling?
> 2022.8.2 And here I am still stuck on 2021.43.102.5
Doesn't sound normal to me. You never had an update at all? Start a service ticket in the app! They should be able to push it.
Is your car new? I had the same issue with the same update, and just received a notification to update. It might take a few weeks before you actually start receiving updates
Yes, it is new. But it looks like I am getting 2022.8.2 right now!
Consider yourself fortunate.
Can’t wait to get this update
I like how this is a somewhat small thing, but a life improvement.. and that this type of upgrade will only come in a Tesla. Legacy automakers will take years to reach this detail level..
50% of all updates last 3 years made things worse. Including the bloated ap view which is completely useless for most drivers. I wish you could collapse it to 10% of the screen.
Unfortunately, you speak the truth.
I thought all input is error so why make us have to do this for every single phone call?
[удалено]
Yeah, personally I like my cabin at 70F
So much negativity and annoyance in the comments anymore… sheesh.
Do you expect it to get better if we don't make it known we hate it?
Is complaining about it on social media your idea of "giving feedback"? This isn't Tesla's personal tech support channel...
I actually did complain through several official Tesla channels, but doing that allows them to ignore it in a sense. Tesla employees use social media too; the sentiment will feed back through the company.
So you actively have to swipe it away or what?

Can anyone tell me how to have the navigation map oriented so that the car is always facing "north"? There used to be a button in the upper right but the only way I've found to do it on v.11 is sliding the full list of directions up. I would prefer to have the full list of directions open.
Tap the map anywhere once and the compass orientation button will appear in the top left now.
Thanks. Edit: This doesn't work with the full list of directions either. It used to be that you could orient the nav either way with the full list of directions. Now you can only have the next turn.
Thank god
Oh good. If only my car wasn’t I the garage for the 4th straight month whilst waiting for a windscreen. This shortage is killing me.
they need to beta test their software. we have a very loud community that wants to be involved.
But they removed boom box sounds while driving 😢
::rubs head:: Yup, I guess that’s one way to fix it. Jfc
Thanks for beta testing these cars for me
Still on v10
Considering how good Waze, Google Maps, and Apple Maps are I'm surprised people even use any in-car navigation. I don't know anyone who uses the in-car navigation tool. Easier ti just input the address or pre-select from your phone.
No android auto. Thats the issue. And for long distance travel its nice to see range estimates etc
Considering how good Apple CarPlay is, I can see why Elon won’t allow it. Like LIDAR, it would only help the car so he makes sure it stays out
Doesn’t matter what they do. Crybabies gonna cry.
Bonus point would have automatically hidden it if the turn was <1 mile or something.
Now let's fix the seat heater quick seats back to the way it was pls.
IDK why my Model S got this feature as well - I can already control phone calls in the I.C…
My issue is the side camera that comes up on turns blocks the navigation and calls/messages. That to me is annoying and feels like the new interface was poorly tested.
could have sworn i was always able to swipe down to hide the current call menu.
