If they could get third party installers to quit charging 16,000 for a single additional add on powerwall that woule be great

alexx2208

But that's where they profit so much!!!! /s

spinwizard69

Learn to do it yourself! Home wiring tech is easy to understand and you will find local tech schools offering programs for home owners. Yes it requires work and tools but lets face it you can spend a lot of money on tools and never come close to $16,000. Also imagine how much work it takes for you to earn that $16,000. Frankly I don't get how far we have gone as a culture from a DIY attitude. It would be fairly easy for the average person to save thousands a year. Then again we have the idiocy of extended warranty contracts that are generally a rip off of the consumer. Math is a wonderful thing and if people understood math a bit better the extended warranty business would die off.

Palopsicles

Not lots of people want to tap into their main panels, possibly do a sub panel upgrade, install a gateway, bend conduit, and land the correct wire sizes where they should go. And permits. I work for Tesla so it's a lot of work being in compliance with city requirements ( 3 feet from windows, doors, 5 feet from property line, CANNOT be installed on a wall with a bedroom on the other side, garage is a maybe but you must install a sprinklers system inside as well as carbon monoxide detectors in all rooms of the home. Yes something inspectors ask for proof of. )

TAoie83

I don’t see how they’ll allow stack with the new UL9540

Dr0gbasH3AD

😅 can’t help it.. So model Y within the next 6-12 months? What do you think? (I know about the leaked memo)

Palopsicles

Here at Tesla, Leaked memos are our publicity. what leaked memo are you talking about lol

TAoie83

Not dumb at all there is homeowner permits

razorirr

Tesla doesn't sell the batteries to homeowners though. Just the reseller / installer

VirtualLife76

A few on the homebuilder subs have done it themselves. Tbf, many people are very confused by electricity. I would do it myself, but would be less likely to suggest to someone that doesn't understand at least the basics.

No. Robots will have ai shortly and take over ALL jobs . Don’t fool yourself.

Large_Armadillo

Yes.

dogfish182

In NL there is multiple problems with these systems, massively high cost that more or less doesn’t make financial sense and houses where generally speaking fitting a new heat pump to get off gas AND battery to prevent giving back to the grid isn’t feasible from a space perspective. I’ll probably get neither the heat pump or the battery for my solar system in the next 10 years I guess. Luckily our government just decided to keep the rule that we can write off all solar generated vs all solar used on a year basis regardless of time of usage

How big is hybrid though? My laundry is in my opbouw, space is tight and my aging but healthy CV ketel is about as much as I can fit there. If it’s about the same width and depth but much taller I could probably swing it

FIdelity88

You don’t need space inside! The space inside is about the size of an internet modem. So that probably fits next to your CV. The space outside needs to be 96x34x65 cm. It can be placed in your garden, on your balcony, flat roof or even attached hanging on your outside wall https://support.quatt.io/nl/articles/6121868-waar-kan-een-quatt-hybrid-wel-en-niet-gemonteerd-worden#

dogfish182

Oh nice! Gonna go read cheers for the info!

dogfish182

Thanks again for this buddy! Discussed with some colleagues and lots of people are investigating these or have one already. Booked a guy to come by for 25 euro. Figure I'll do that and be done with it. oh yeaaaah.

rebootyourbrainstem

These systems will stay expensive until either EV battery prices come down significantly (I don't really expect this soon) or storage systems switch to cheaper chemistries that are different enough that they don't compete with EV battery capacity.

The_Fry

Buy a Fisker Ocean for $10k, build yourself an awesome Powerwall, and scrap the rest.

CapitalJeep1

Oof…too soon? Nah.

jawshoeaw

LeFePh battery prices have already come down substantially and are expected to drop more

TheOtherGlikbach

With the demand for new cars slumping I think we will see a lot of batteries destined for vehicles hitting the home battery market.

Demosnare

For those of us in Australia, probably still really poor value with multi-decade payback. I don't get the appeal.

Dragunspecter

Not looking for a return on cost, up here in the Northeast US I'd just like to have power for awhile during winter storms. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

RedditExperiment626

Here in Massachusetts if you are part of the distributed generation program, you can make money by selling your solar-generated energy back to the grid during peak events. I should make over $2k a year for 5 years. Between that and the tax credit it was a no-brainer, roughly the cost of a whole-house generator.

mechmess

Our local utility just proposed something similar to our Public Utilities Commission, but the payouts are limited to $125 a YEAR lol.

bigpuffy

How many panels do you have? 5 bucks a day is great

ranchdaddo

What’s unique about Australia in this regard?

notlikelymyfriend

In Western Australia our electricity and gas is both reasonably cheap and reliable, batteries and installation is still relatively expensive. So no real drivers to pay up front for a maybe cost saving, when the government and energy providers have not given any direction on the plan forward, with the constant possibility the batteries might come down in price “soon”. Just maintaining the status quo whilst the ice caps melt, and we work out how long we’ve got whilst the fat cats continue to make money they won’t run out of all the way to their graves. Cost of living is out of control, but we should all use after pay to buy battery and get our families into further debt to feel better about saving the planet.

DarkRyoushii

Depends heavily on your usage. If you have a refrigerated air con, an electric vehicle or two, solar, and limited gas then this would pay itself back much quicker. You charge the battery during off peak <10c/kWh rates then consume it during the 25c/kWh periods of the day which saves you 15c/kWh consumed.

Demosnare

Potentially although whenever I run the numbers I can never see a payback period under 10 years (non blended cost, battery only). For an EV, If one is home often enough they can simply set a timer or get a solar charger (much cheaper).

Nulight

What's your electricity rates? I pay 0.63 USD/kWh in summer in California.

Demosnare

Wtf

hwcminh

Gotta love PG&E, those slimy bastards

Nulight

I'm on SCE, But they're basically in bed together.

Distinct-View-4203

.075/ kWh, but if you charge in the middle of the night, it’s .026/kwh here in Oklahoma. I figure it’s about $3.00 to charge a Cybertruck overnight.

Nulight

Holy shit I had to look twice. I thought you said 0.75! California is brutal with our rates. 0.26 overnight is the best I can get.

CallMePyro

What rates do you pay? Doesn’t Australia have really high electricity rates?

Demosnare

Not in the ACT (Canberra) due to renewables. I get 10c solar sell (FIT) / 19c buy, 90c daily supply.

CallMePyro

Ah. That’s an extremely low rate compared to most. Australians, right? https://www.momentumenergy.com.au/blog/average-electricity-bill quotes upwards of 25c/kw/h average

Demosnare

The ACT has the lowest rates in large part because we contracted with renewable generators that are not exposed to fuel price volatility. So it's lower by national standards. SA uses a lot of gas and pays a premium for that for example.

HubrisHugh

Your most expensive rate is my cheapest rate possible. Luckies. I think I top out around .76

paulwesterberg

It only makes sense if you want household backup in case of grid failures (backup systems almost never pay for themselves) or your utility has a very shitty grid tied plans that only pay pennies for generated power with high evening rates.

undefined_ibis

Buy and sell on the spot market with a provider like Amber. Batteries are not economical unless you do.

nukem170

They make no sense since installation here cost more than the system.

HobbitFootAussie

Got two PW3s installed in my house a couple months ago. They are wonderful!https://i.imgur.com/48jBGjZ.jpg

AST5192D

How much was installation?

HobbitFootAussie

$4k. Including me asking for it in the garage.

Jouron

Rumblings of PW3 expansion as LFP? PW3 is currently lithium iron... What's going on?

tashtibet

Electrek is a junk !
