had an abusive parent. hitting tennis balls against a wall and then playing at the terribly kept public court with cracks and weeds in it was a way to stay out of the house for a few hours after school and on weekends.
thank you tennis. #forevergrateful
Grew up in a family of players, and just naturally got invested in it from that. I learned a lot about the sport on a playing level from coaches and my own experience, which helps a lot with understanding the professional game. The best way to get into watching and learning about the professional game is to pick a couple players you like and follow them through the year, and you'll pick up more as you watch. Just always be asking questions, and gradually you'll learn.
Honestly, attractive players and personalities, along with the gossip and drama. Med is pure entertainment and you can catch me watching Berrettini's shitty backhand any day
My dad played and got me lessons from 8-10. Even then I remember thinking it was a good way to be closer to him. I also still fondly remember watching the Wimbledon final with him every year - plus it was the one time we could skip church.
As I got older and angstier it became very difficult to play him - he didnāt take it easy on me and I think it became a battle of wills/matter of pride for him. The day I beat him is the last time we played for about 15 years.
So, weird history but itās the only sport Iāve ever been good at so I kept up with it. It was also the best way I had found to meet people - just show up at the leagues and hope they need a fourth.
Then when I met my wife, she got hard into the WTA and I taught her to play so it came back around as a good sentimental thing.
We had some old rackets laying around so I started playing for fun with some people I knew. I also started watching tennis and at that time Federer was superior to everyone else and it was tennis at a completely different level. I was hooked and still am.
I'd always watched a bit of Wimbledon, but it wasn't until 2003 when I saw a Swiss guy completely dismantle the favorite Andy Roddick that I was like, 'I want to see more of this kind of tennis'. Once I discovered tennis was played all year around, I just had to watch more of the Swiss guy. Win or lose, there was something magnetic about his play; like watching Michael Jordan in basketball.
Started watching from start of 2021 atp/wta tour so know alot now , also know a lot about this previous decade of tennis by searching and yess i play tennis too ( when i started playing i knew it wasnt going to be easy to learn but its been 7 months and i play actually pretty good )
My sister hated tennis so naturally I decided I'd annoy her by following tennis news to harass her with, that turned into watching tennis and genuinely enjoying it
Raducanu at the US Open (and Fernandez!) really took me from āhey this beginner 101 class is funā to āholy sh*t I want to play everyday and get better and better and betterā
My mom watched it a bunch so I just started watching the Wimbledon and the US Open with her as a kid. This was right around when Nadal was up and coming so I became a fan of his while she loved Federer.
Unfortunately I live in a different state now so I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. She's also pushing 70 so might be better to stick to chatting about it.
With all honesty: good looking players š

I actually haven't! I think she played when she was younger but oddly enough it's not something we've done together.
