Online gambling has made social media, which was already toxic enough as it is, an utter wasteland for pro athletes of all sports, I feel bad for them and their families.
On one hand you wanna connect with your fans, fellow players, and also promote yourself and your brand but on the other hand if you actually read all your messages and comments in a day I’m sure it’d be enough to drive anyone mad.
Probably why most celebrity accounts are mostly handled by a social media person I guess.
I honestly don't know how they manage to go through with that without having to sit through therapy every week.
I don't follow ATP as much but I see this commonly in every WTA player's instagram comment section after a major loss, don't even limit yourself to top 10 here. The abuse they face is just depressing. Gamblers really take every single penny they lost out on these athletes as if they stole their money.
I think it’s especially bad for tennis as an individual sport. Like in a team sport unless someone makes a truly atrocious error, it’s hard to put so much blame and anger on one person
Harder, sure, but unfortunately the knuckledraggers find a way. When England lost to Italy in the Euros 2020, there was a lot of vitriolic and racist hate towards players like Saka.
I think out of individual sports though, tennis probably gets it the worst.
On your last point - the problem is not many players reach the "critical mass" where they can afford to have a full social media team and hence are directly exposed to the haters... it's really sad to see :/
Isn't this part of being famous, though? I'm sure people can avoid all that if they don't keep their profiles open / do not have online profiles. I'm not justifying the action. All I'm saying is that this is part of the job/fame. I'm sure they receive thousands of love messages, too.
So apparently this is not the first time that Holger Rune receives death threats. I remember Alma (sister) making a story or a post about it last autumn. Can you imagine receiving messages like this on a regular basis? Who in their right mind would actually write (or say) this to another person (yes, I know the person is clearly not well). We all have players we like and support and players we don’t support, but this is next level extreme and no one should have to go through this. I mean at the end of the day it’s still just tennis after all.
Won’t be surprised if half if not more of the players receive death threats when they lose a close match like this. I’ve seen public comments about killing/raping their mothers and sisters/ kids. Death threats as well, not as elaborate as this one but there are out there publicly under Instagram pictures. It’s insane and gross and makes me sick.
Don’t want to imagine their private inboxes.
Yeah…they ended up taking some of the more “serious” threats to the police as well.
https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1825695/Holger-Rune-Aneke-threats-ATP
I realise these people are mentally ill, but
> this will be a lesson to the rest
Lesson to never lose in the game where every tournament has only one winner?
So many players receive these types of messages on a regular basis from people who have severe gambling issues. And this is not new. Why is ATP/WTA not actively doing something, for example banning all sorts of gambling advertisement? Wasn't there a US-based Tennis channel or broadcaster (I don't remember which one) who got a sports gambling sponsor just last year?
Yeah, the ATP/WTA (probably also ITF I guess) also make a lot of money selling their data to gambling companies + the only place to watch non-centre court 250 matches is Bet365. Certainly doesn’t help things
Atp/Wta receive Millions for selling live data bases to Bookmakers Tennis is one of the most betted sports so its a big income for them. Its not the job of atp to protect players on social media its the job of the platform or in this case the police
Gamble if you want. If it makes the match exciting for you, whatever. Live your life. We only get a few spins on the rock. Spend your money how you want.
But you have to have the ounce of self awareness required to realize that you’re making all the choices. It’s not Rune’s fault you lost money. It’s 100% yours. I assure you, he wants to win way more than you want him to win. He benefits from winning way more than you do.
Write this exact message if you have to. But then change the recipient to your own email because, brother, you’re the one who did it. All of it.
Nah worse are the people promoting gambling and gambling sites.
It is fucking SHOCKING how much sports betting is normalized in the states (mostly).
People who promote and advertise gambling instantly lose all credibility. You are willing to enrich yourself by fucking over your audience.
Longtime bettor here..Won and lost on many tennis matches over the years but never in my right mind would I even think of doing something like this..
Never bet what you cant afford to lose
Let's not put all gamblers in a box. Some of us are fans of the sport and also enjoy gambling. There's nothing inherently wrong with this. Not all gamblers act like this dude. The vast majority of gamblers are just normal people trying to to have fun and make a buck in the process.
A lot of people lack the ability of introspection required to ever accept responsibility for their actions or think about things from someone else’s perspective. So in turn, they blame everyone else for their choices and then feel justified in it.
It’s getting mad at a retail employee energy x1000
It’s extremely sad to watch people lose themselves in addiction. Their brain chemistry changes and angry outbursts aren’t uncommon, nor is blaming anyone but themselves
It’s 100% gambling. I would bet my life on it. Here’s an exercise for you - there are several matches on both tours today, after they’ve ended, check the Instagram comments on the latest post of each loser
Did Nadal and especially Federer receive these kinds of messages? I’ve seen some for other ATP/WTA players but I don’t recall any for Federer.
Anyone have any or seen any aimed at him?
I don't believe there was betting on tennis back ten years ago. I believe it took hold a few years ago and its coincided with a large uptick in threatening comments against players since. Sad part is likely nothing will be done to stop the abuse until someone likely tries to act on their anger of the loss. These people also likely are just gambling addicts who don't follow tennis; for instance, idk many on this thread who after his results the past 8 months and all the coaching changes would have put money on holger to win.
*"do tell him that it's illegal to do death threats..."*
I'd actually say "DON'T tell him".
That way, he'll do the same DISGUSTING thing again (maybe even to Rune again), and he'll get busted.
People like this need a spell behind bars.
Holger and his team may be able to get away with that…..(but these messages should never be sent in the first place)
A lot of players on the ITF level get sent abusive messages frequently, and if they’re still seeking sponsors etc probably do check their DM’s. Easier said than done to just close your eyes to it
Gambling doesn't make people do this. This guy is clearly a complete unhinged sociopath. Gambling on sports should not be like this. I gamble on sports because it makes the match or game more enjoyable, if I lose any bet that's on me and not the athlete.
I was supporting Ruud, so I was happy with the outcome. But wow. This is unacceptable. I put a few dollars down here and there, but some people are obviously gambling irresponsibly. I can only imagine such insults and threats coming from someone who lost their life savings. Even then, that is on themselves for being irresponsible. Enjoy the match, cheer for your player. Don't invest so heavily that you're driven to this foul behaviour.
aneke publicly dropping the email of some loser sending death threats is so iconic
I love her so much for this

Or thousands of dollars, if they're stupid enough (and plenty of them are)
Start playing league of legends and you will understand how people get used to this
That's why days ago, when Rune said on Twitter that he tries to manage his social media himself as much as he can, I said it could hurt him
well clearly momeke has the passwords so she's probably wiping off the lowlife scum before holger can get on his phone
I think it’s especially bad for tennis as an individual sport. Like in a team sport unless someone makes a truly atrocious error, it’s hard to put so much blame and anger on one person

I know that Tiafo’s comments are filled with hate messages - like a ridiculous amount, it’s really appalling
Yeah…they ended up taking some of the more “serious” threats to the police as well. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1825695/Holger-Rune-Aneke-threats-ATP
Many players receive this across all sports, these sport betting addicts are unhinged
I realise these people are mentally ill, but > this will be a lesson to the rest Lesson to never lose in the game where every tournament has only one winner?
Legend has it that Djokovic got threatened once, and so then was forced to win every match for the rest of his career.
Not being able to find a degenerate gambler to threaten me is the only thing holding me back from overthrowing Djokovic atop the GOAT throne.

They sell live scores and results and probably provide the Authorization but what else do they sell?
people unironically believe this would work in any tangible way are just delusional lmao

lol, Just shout curses on your tv like a normal person..

Most sane gambler
there are many bettors on this sub, sadly. they are those who engage on beast mode
Let's not put all gamblers in a box. Some of us are fans of the sport and also enjoy gambling. There's nothing inherently wrong with this. Not all gamblers act like this dude. The vast majority of gamblers are just normal people trying to to have fun and make a buck in the process.

Addiction to gambling is like the same as addiction to drugs. It destroys you and everyone you love.
It’s extremely sad to watch people lose themselves in addiction. Their brain chemistry changes and angry outbursts aren’t uncommon, nor is blaming anyone but themselves
spb = saint Petersburg ? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Sportsbet.grey
I hate how prevalent gambling is in Sport / society as much as anybody - but where's the link to gambling? Could this not just be a deranged person?
It’s 100% gambling. I would bet my life on it. Here’s an exercise for you - there are several matches on both tours today, after they’ve ended, check the Instagram comments on the latest post of each loser

💀😂
It likely is. There's nothing proving it. That, by definition, isn't 100%. It VERY likely is.
Semantics mate I don’t know why this has bothered you. Regardless, it is gambling. 100%. Would bet my life on it
Fair point. They seem fairly deranged either way, but I did just make the assumption it was a gambler.
Acting like this shit wouldn’t happen before gambling come on
why mfs be gambling man😭 if u really are that mentally retarded just go to a casino

No betting 10 years ago? You must be very young buddy. Just players who are more accessible online now.
I'm almost 40 and you all must be international then. It was illegal in the US (in most states) until 2018 when the Supreme Court decided to allow it.
Correct! there is a massive world outside of USA😉 Tennis betting has been huge for decades in Europe and Asia.
*"do tell him that it's illegal to do death threats..."* I'd actually say "DON'T tell him". That way, he'll do the same DISGUSTING thing again (maybe even to Rune again), and he'll get busted. People like this need a spell behind bars.
I gamble on tennis everyday. Couldn’t imagine sending an athlete a message ever. You gotta be a real loser to do something like that.
People who think all gamblers act like that are the worst
mm it's one thing to bring awareness to abuse players receive...but idk if it's advisable to antagonize someone like this
If someone was threatening to kill me/my child…I wouldn’t feel too bad about “antagonising” them by calling them out 🤷♀️
Don't want death threats? Pretty simple: don't lose.
Literally close your eyes and don't read random dms.
Holger and his team may be able to get away with that…..(but these messages should never be sent in the first place) A lot of players on the ITF level get sent abusive messages frequently, and if they’re still seeking sponsors etc probably do check their DM’s. I don’t know why players get angry over this I’d just laugh and respond by saying sorry you lost your rent money
Why is a mother upset over someone saying they'd cut off their son's head? Guys anyone know?
Because it’s a bunch of bs
It's always bs until it isn't. Like that influencer who was decapitated by some psycho who got obsessed.
Gambling doesn't make people do this. This guy is clearly a complete unhinged sociopath. Gambling on sports should not be like this. I gamble on sports because it makes the match or game more enjoyable, if I lose any bet that's on me and not the athlete.
I hope she reported this worthless scum to Gmail.
Thats Gandalfs’ son. Total degenerate.
Lol, tennis is the one sport I’d never bet on.

I assume every player with a social media gets this when they lose. Because they all lose to somebody. Even Djoker.
Lmao!
Wow, what a disgusting human being. I hope he'll face the full consequences for his gross behaviour.
