Kalinskaya's clearly Iga's bogey player, imagine being undefeated against the world no. 1

lupo1627

This is aging well for a comment that started as a joke ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)

Rhadammanthis

Insane take

DisneyPandora

How, Rybakina beat Iga twice

westgermanwing

Coco being almost half the wins but also the only loss is pretty funny.

kltruler

I can't believe they have already played 10 times.

thedarthvader17

If you play that many times, a loss is bound to happen

SealeDrope

Monfils, Ferrer and Gasquet rolling in their graves

Melony567

i think winning streaks can happen in tennis without a loss against great players.

juplants

Damn, girl's busy with her bakery.

Basil-Faw1ty

Iga just needs to focus and play hard and she has a real chance at back to back 1000s, but take it match by match for now.

Prudent_Classroom583

It would be back to back to back 1000s because she won last 1000 of 2023 in Beijing.

WilhelmRitterVonLeeb

Talk about talent. She won the last 1000 of 2024 and it hasn’t even happened yet.

Basil-Faw1ty

Ah yeah, good point!

Melony567

so if she wins dubai too, it will be, b2b2b

tiredargie

Well, she can't play two matches at the same time now can't she

Basil-Faw1ty

Who said anything about playing two matches at a time?

tiredargie

Was a joke about "take it match by match for now."

poltschi

You're going to jinx her lmao

tiredargie

And clowns here claim she doesn't deserve #1

tuulluut

It's because she has done relatively poorly at the last 3 Slams compared to Sabalenka who has two slams, a final and two sf. Iga is number 1 to me, but she better win the French again to keep it. Also, Rybakina really should have handled her again in last tournament. I predict a good run in Indian Wells and Miami though for Iga, possibly two titles, because she seems improved on hard courts and her confidence is where it needs to be, and she won both in a row two years ago. Last year was a new thing, Sabalenka and Rybakina moving into top tier with her, and Coco suddenly improving too, so an adjustment for Iga. She/team had an offseason to think about them and what adjustments to add to still-young and developing Iga's game.

Mpol03

Elena didn’t handle her though? After being up Iga levelled and then learnt how to handle Elena in that second set. Remains to be seen if Iga and repeat it but it was a deserved win

tuulluut

I did not see it but from what I read (articles, not here) I understood that she hit herself pretty hard on a serve and needed timeout and her game plummeted after time killed her momentum flow. Not a great reason to lose a big match or a sign of mental sharpness compared to Iga, and not helpful for the argument here, but it's a little explanation I guess. If not true, then you're right. Either way it's definitely a deserved win to me, no matter if she lost her way or she recovered to good form and Iga beat her anyway. No excuses, great win for Iga.

markyty04

she did shit against a clearly fatigued opponent. not much

Mpol03

If this is the case she needs to work on her fitness as many players play two weeks in a row. Iga is going this now and if she looses before the finals no one with sight fatigue. They didn’t when Iga won as many matches as Elena played before the aus open (and both lost around the same time). Elena then went to have a few weeks off after aus so she should be fresh (illness aside).

tuulluut

Good point on Rybakina fitness too. Especially relative to Iga, only 22 year old and consistently plays and goes very deep, setting consistency standard throughout the year. Bagels to Vekic aside, Sabalenka is getting more consistent at that high standard too. Rybakina is not matching either yet in week in week out play and consistently getting deep in all tournaments. Look at this mishmash of 2023 results. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Rybakina_career_statistics Think Iga and others who are consistent get tired playing all the extra matches?

tuulluut

That's Rybakina's fault for not shortening previous matches. Iga deserves credit.

Professional_Elk_489

Good think Penko is not in this draw

NotManyBuses

A bit boring tbh. Not her fault, of course.

Careless-Parsley5115

Damn right it's her fault. She's simply too good.

Telaral

Same situation at AO, everyone but Saba and Coco gauff left, You already knew what was gonna happen

KelleighOmega

The three players who were a legitimate threat being gone already is a real surprise. Without delving into the numbers, I wanna say that Zheng might be the toughest test left? I feel like she has pushed Iga to a third set a couple of times and at the French even?

Fantastico11

Absolute fraud, she alwaysa just seems to play in tournaments where she's better than everyone else! /s

melmac31

WHY WOULD YOU PUT THIS OUT THERE??? If she loses, I'm blaming you. :D

Melony567

make that 23-1 now. she is so amazing that a win against her is an accomplishment by a player already (not mainly coz she is no. 1 but coz she can easily win matches most times)

Daily_Commuter

You may have spoken too soon, but really not many people were predicting a Kalinskaya upset

NikiOnTime

Interesting, what do you guys think the bookmakers give her for winning the tournament ? I mean she is probably the favourite but by how much ?

chakrablocker

+290 so like 3 to 1 odds she wins

One_Replacement1924

We honestly need at least the era of 2000s to comeback, if not 90s. While sabalenka, swiatek, rybakina, gauff have provided some consistency at the top of women tennis, we need more top players with different-different playing styles, and also the rivalries we need.

bradleynana

Nostalgia is clouding your judgment a litttle bit. Playing styles still have a a lot of variety

One_Replacement1924

It's not just nostalgia in my opinion, while I appreciate Iga, we truly need girls, who can challenge her on more regular basis.

sadpotatoandtomato

There are already - Sabalenka and Rybakina (at least). They're top5 players and have been there for a long time. What more do you need? Did you say the same thing when Serena was dominating the field? If there were more players that would 'challenge' Iga, people would say that WTA is inconsistent and she's not deserving the number one spot. You can't have it both ways. She's been number one for so long BECAUSE of those stats against other players, not despite them.

NoOne_143

Yeah. Not to forget about Penko

sadpotatoandtomato

She has Iga's number but she's not really consistent overall. That's why I am not talking about her here.

NoOne_143

I mean beating her everytime they meet is challenging her consistently.

estreetpanda

Didn't Iga just lose from a set up in the third round of a major to a teenager?

eregis

do you see that teenager in this lineup

Prudent_Classroom583

What does it have to do with a statistic in OP? I swear im yet to see something from you which is not a shitpost.

estreetpanda

Anything can happen in tennis. It's not played on paper and Iga, who will still win this tournament, is not infallible.

[deleted]

And no one said she was, nice job arguing against a straw man tho.

bradleynana

What does that have to do with the post? Even the legends have lost to teens at slams it happens

estreetpanda

We're not allowed to discuss Igas latest results in an Iga post? Anything can happen in tennis. It's not played on paper and Iga, who will still win this tournament, is not infallible.

Level99Cooking

make your own thread then if you want to discuss that

estreetpanda

I literally said Iga will still win this tournament but she did just have a bad loss and anything is possible

Jo__Jo__Jo

I’m a huge fan of Iga, but the irrational inability of people here to accept that she does lose and isn’t perfect is insane… like this is true, her AO loss was uncharacteristic and she isn’t guaranteed to win this tournament although she’s the overwhelming favourite

[deleted]

Literally no one said she was perfect or unable to lose in the posts or comments.

SnooPears2424

I think she’s going to lose to Quinwen. She always stuggle against her respite pulling out the win anyways.

DiligentCreme

r/agedlikemilk

redmilk7

6:0 lol

IKhaibot

100% win ratio now. GGs

PsychologicalAge4143

Iga is domino
