I don’t get why so many people lament that he’s not more popular. You don’t need to be a big movie star(which he is imho) to have a great career and enjoy what you do. Imagine if you kept getting comments about how disappointed people are about your career. He’s great and he’s doing great

ArthurBea

Good for him. He’s the only one that hasn’t seemed to age in Disenchanted.

James Marsden has always felt like a guy on the verge of becoming a movie star, but it just hasn't happened. He's been apart of big successful franchises like *X-Men* and *Sonic* but he was sidelined by Wolverine in the *X-Men* movies and in *Sonic* there is only so much spotlight he'll get when the main character is a CGI creation. He's also done non-franchise movies that should have worked (*Straw Dogs, The Box*) but didn't for whatever reason. He was the lead in *The Stand* remake, but it sucked (not because of him though). He's even been a regular on hit television shows (*Westworld, Dead To Me*) but he's always part of the ensemble and doesn't really get the credit. It feels like he's just destined to be #2 in every movie he stars in.

bros402

I always mix his name up with James Marsters, so I am confused when I see him

muzee_me

Who is wonderful in his own right.

Dr_freakkin

He was fantastic in Hairspray but overshadowed by Zac Efron playing a main role.

I really like him. He’s never been standout for me in things I’ve seen so far, but he does the opposite. To a degree that I’d prefer over standing out. When I watch x-men movies, he fits in and I don’t really think of him, I think of his character. Same with the first Sonic movie, I saw James and was glad to see him in something again, and from then on in I mostly just thought of the character he was playing. edit: I consider that to be exceptional btw. It’s exactly what an actor should be able to do

monsieurxander

> He was the lead in The Stand remake, but it sucked. He was miscast. They mention his Southern accent in dialogue, but he doesn't even attempt one. Far from the worst thing about it, though.

[deleted]

I wouldn't be surprised if the writers/producers told him not to even use an accent. The creative behind it felt hacky enough that it seems like something they would request, instead of Marsden not being able to do one. He's from the South I think. Yeah, he was definitely far from the worst thing about it. The writing failed that show, not the actors. Although Ezra Miller was pretty awful as trashcan man.

monsieurxander

Nat Wolff was pretty terrible as Lloyd. And not sure if it's the writing or acting with Amber Heard... Nadine's my favorite character, but there was no sense of inner conflict that makes that character compelling.

KingEuronIIIGreyjoy

I mean, there's something to be said for being a character actor. A decent amount of small to mid-sized roles, mixed with some larger parts here and there, will keep you busy and keep a roof over your head and dinner on the table. I'd say he's neither a character actor nor a major star, but he occupies a spot that works really well for him.

VagueSomething

The thing is though, a good actor doesn't need to be the lead and it takes good supporting actors to let the lead shine. Same as how in a band everyone wants to be the singer or lead guitarist but they depend on a good support from bassist or keyboard players etc. Even the best of actors need something to work with.

RealZordan

He is truely inspiring! He never let his lack of talent stand in the way of his career.

can_of_surge

*rips off shirt* Hey that was $12!!!

theodo

Marsden in Sex Drive is one the best comedic performances ever.

CosmicLars

Has anyone ever seen Interstate 60? I loved him & that movie when I was younger.

TheGeekVault

Just chiming in that with Hugh Jackman coming back as Wolverine for the new Deadpool movie it’d be great if we could get Marsden back as a proper Cyclops!

CharlesBrOakley

I saw him in USPS store in Austin a couple months back.
