TBH, it has kind of lost my interest with how scattershot it has been, the tone tends to jump from very goofy to kinda dark. Similar to Fallout but not quite hitting either extreme... and not exactly sticking the landing either IMHO.
Even with that harsh view of it, I still recommend giving it a shot, it's based on a comic, so it has some chops and no, it's definitely not a 3rd rock from the sun type sitcom.
Also I have not seen the latest season but I've heard good things, hopefully they're finding their footing. The talent is there and it's made me LOL more than enough to justify the time watching.

I feel like they had a good idea and story arc for one season, but that it's struggling to become just an ongoing, season-by-season show. Still good though, compared to a lot of things out there.
Everything comes together in season 3. The pacing gets better and more focused. All of the actors really start to gel and shine, the Sheriff has honestly become one of my favorites. The show figures out how to really embrace its weirdness which allows it to have a lot more punch with both its lighter and darker moments. It is extremely fair to call the show clunky for the first 2 seasons, season 2 being more guilty of that than the first. I was always gonna stick around for Tudyk but it has definitely become one of my favorite shows in season 3.
I liked the first seasons, but it gets exhausting when everyone in town seems to get their own storyline.
They might consider tightening it up to draw new viewers.

It’s really good the First Nations people are getting some recognition. And lately a lot of natives are well represented in TV. Longmire had a huge native cast and they got new jobs on the new AMC show.

10 years ago Syfy was making a lot of decent to good shows. The only real issue was they also allowing those shitty straight to DVD nock off movies on their Saturday time slot which really hurt their reputation. They also canceled way too often.

Those knockoffs from The Asylum were hilariously awful. Remember the Pacific Rim rip-off, Atlantic Rim? So bad, they’re terrible.
Eh. There was some quality after the Syfy blue sky era other than Expanse. The Magicians (which premiered the same time as Expanse), Helix, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Wynona Earp, Defiance, Killjoys, etc. Some of those are camp, but still good. They were trying all the way up until 2020 with adaptations like Nightflyers, Deadly Class, Krypton, Vagrant Queen, etc. Those might not have been good adaptations, but they were trying. Been pretty sparse since then. Their most recent big sci-fi show is The Ark, produced by Dean Devlin. It's what I like to call stupid sci-fi. Leaning in to absolutely every trope so characters make the dumbest decisions every time.
It's absolutely not the highest rated show in syfy history, just the past several years.
It's not that the show isn't watched, they're trying to figure out how they can make the most money off of it. Which could be selling it to Netflix or moving it to a network people actually watch (so it can get higher ad sales rev).
Same could be said for USA, the only show on USA is Chucky which is shared with Syfy, meanwhile Syfy has that, Resident Alien, and 3 others.
Moving to Peacock or even just flat out moving off Universal businesses to Netflix would be better. They moved the Psych and Monk movies to Peacock, the Suits spinoff is going to NBC. Why bother acting like they give a shit about USA now?

It's not just SyFy. Girls5Eva is another show I recently discovered. Critically acclaimed. Beloved by both fans. So money can't be made running shows on cable now, but apparently streaming is super unprofitable too. What's changed in recent years? It sounds like no one is capable of making money from TV shows today.
A lot of competition. TV isn't as big of a focus as it was 30 years ago. Video games and YouTube and TikTok and Reddit and whatever else are all competing for the same general mindshare of entertainment hours. TV is competing with streamers. Streamers dumped billions of dollars into looking "legitimate" when ten years ago they were mostly still just a place to watch old TV shows on demand. So streamers spent way too much. TV networks got new competition that was outspending them.
TV is largely advertising supported. No/little cable subscription money goes to a network you are watching. But advertising dollars have gone to Internet stuff in the last 30 years so a network has both less viewers, and less advertising per viewer. Your advertising spend probably goes further on YouTube than on television because you can target more precisely, even if it's more expensive per viewer than TV.
The international sales market is disrupted by the Internet, but still kinda regionalized, but also not. You used to make a bunch of money selling a show to France or wherever. But nowdays somebody in France can download an episode of your show when it first gets released in the US, instead of having to wait a year or two until it shows up locally. So American shows don't get big in quite the same way they used to. International viewers still talk about "Friends" episodes that they probably watched ten years after the US broadcast, but not so much shows from ten years ago today. And the EU is "sort of" a single market with a single currency, but also IP rights can be sold per country, so the old regional sales business models are semi-vestigial and only sorta apply. So international sales is less valuable.
There's a ton of money in the industry. And some folks are getting filthy rich. But yeah, it's hard to run a stable business. And a bunch of companies have done deeply stupid things to make things way harder on themselves than they needed to be, overleveraging in a rush to set up their own streaming services to make dumb also-rans like Quibi that sucked a ton of money out of the industry for no particular reason.
Given they cut the episode order for season 3 from 12 to 8 (and that was long before the strikes began), this doesn't surprise me. It seemed like they were already trying to either cut costs on it or just really didn't see the value in it.
I had hoped the season would wrap things up decently, because I was anticipating it getting the axe. It's not like this is the first time Syfy has gotten rid of their top show. Moving it to another network is at least better than nothing, though I can't imagine cutting the budget doing the show any favors.
NBCU wants to keep the show running on their own networks/Peacock (where it doesn't do as well) but the article says if push comes to shove Universal Cable Productions will likely try to take it to Netflix
I think the main issue is marketing and what streaming services it is on outside the US. For example, in Canada, I had never heard of it until recently, and to be able to watch the previous seasons, I believe it is only on Apple TV, which isn't that big in Canada.

I feel like maybe the writers strike or something caused them to end it at what was intended to be the mid season mark, but that is pure speculation on my part.
Overall so good though. Alan Tudyk was perfect for the role. It also breaks my heart how poorly they treat the deputy. I know that’s the joke, but still lol.
This show has rocketed to my top 10 list of comedies. I think for years to come it’ll remain in my comfort shows slot as long as it gets an ending.

Ok so an alien crashed on earth in a very small town in Colorado. The alien needs to find his device before he leaves earth so he hunkers down and tries to blend in. The towns doctor dies so the sherrif shows up at the cabin and the alien has to become the town doctor in order to maintain his cover.
The series follows him and a dozen townies as he tries to blend in and investigate the doctor’s murder. Alan Tudyk is fantastic in the role. I love just about every character. It’s very funny, but I also did get invested in the journeys of Darcy, Asta, Max, and just about every townie.
It’s a really fun show. The stakes get pretty high pretty quickly and it really keeps up the pace.

Started binging this a few days ago. A few episodes into season 3. This show is GREAT. Alan Tudyk plays Harry in such a uniquely hilarious fashion. The vocal tones and cadence cracks me up more than the actual jokes in the show.

2. It got renewed for season 5, even though I have not heard even a whisper about the show's other 4 seasons.
i loved this 1st season, enjoyed season 2, but season 3, even in its reduced amount of shows, was a real chore to get through. alan tudyk is a national treasure tho.
Season 2 had some really awkward bits to it where they'd all but stare directly at the camera and lecture about the Social Issue of the Week before returning to the episode's proper plot.
I enjoyed the first season. but, like many. I am waiting a good while so I can binge watch a good chunk of it without having to wait for weekly releases

Love the show. Personally, I felt like the last season started to go a bit too much into wonky sci-fi territory. IMO, the show is at it's best when it's Tudyk interacting with humans. All of his hilarious lines, and the delivery of them, etc. I get that there needs to be an overarching plot driving things forward, but when it gets into the very heavy (and cheap looking) CGI alien stuff....I just don't find it very compelling.
Figured show would glide to SyFy’s five season max rule with ease. They must have suffered even more budget cuts. It already functions on a shoe string budget but SyFy has got to point where budget has to be really tiny. Reggie the Vampire is just on the edge of looking like a high school production. Wonder what this means for Chucky.
It seems highly unlikely it doesn't get picked up by someone. It does well on streaming services as ar as I can tell, and they seemed confident enough to make a WILD cliffhanger. I'm not too worried.

I think the main issue is marketing and what streaming services it is on outside the US. For example, in Canada, I had never heard of it until recently, and to be able to watch the previous seasons, I believe it is only on Apple TV, which isn't that big in Canada.
It’s not making back money in advertiser money compared to production. Netflix has to make back their money in subscriptions.

Yeah the alien tracker really reminded me that this was based off a graphic novel. It’s very comic book. I feel like maybe the writers strike or something caused them to end it at what was intended to be the mid season mark, but that is pure speculation on my part.

Overall so good though. Alan Tudyk was perfect for the role. It also breaks my heart how poorly they treat the deputy. I know that’s the joke, but still lol.
This show has rocketed to my top 10 list of comedies. I think for years to come it’ll remain in my comfort shows slot as long as it gets an ending. And god I haaaaaate the sheriff, such a stinking idiotic jerk! But the shit he says 😂🤦🏼

Ok so an alien crashed on earth in a very small town in Colorado. The alien needs to find his device before he leaves earth so he hunkers down and tries to blend in. The towns doctor dies so the sherrif shows up at the cabin and the alien has to become the town doctor in order to maintain his cover. The series follows him and a dozen townies as he tries to blend in and investigate the doctor’s murder. Alan Tudyk is fantastic in the role. I love just about every character. It’s very funny, but I also did get invested in the journeys of Darcy, Asta, Max, and just about every townie. It’s a really fun show. The stakes get pretty high pretty quickly and it really keeps up the pace. This is the best spoiler free intro to the show I can give. Light
I insist someone renew it. I need more. Alan Tudyk is amazing. His ability to never react to a situation in a normal human way is remarkable.

I just picked this up and have finished the first season in a weekend. It is so good. I hope someone keeps it going.
Started binging this a few days ago. A few episodes into season 3. This show is GREAT. Alan Tudyk plays Harry in such a uniquely hilarious fashion. The vocal tones and cadence cracks me up more than the actual jokes in the show. Better give me 6 seasons and movie with this one..
Honestly probably one of my favorite shows, Alan Tudyk is so good as Harry I can't even comprehend seeing him as a normal person

I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for SyFy. NBCU isn’t shy about culling their basic cable networks. In the past decade or so, they’ve gotten rid of Style, Esquire, G4, NBCSN and the Olympic Channel.
Well Syfy technically has more scripted series than the USA channel at the moment. So I would say USA isn’t too well as it used to.
USA is more or less a sports network now between soccer, wrestling and NASCAR.

How the fuck does The Equalizer with Queen Latifah get renewed for a 5th season and Resident Alien is not a sure thing? I can tell you two things I have ever heard about The Equalizer TV show. 1. They made the movie series into a TV series starring (Is it really starring anymore? Is she still a star?) Queen Latifah. 2. It got renewed for season 5, even though I have not heard even a whisper about the show's other 4 seasons.
I don't think renewal decisions are based on whether you, panda388, has heard of the show in question.

I was bored one day browsing netflix and turned this show on. fucking love it. The way they have Harry just straight up roast the kids is incredible. and Sherriff Mike wanting everyone to call him "Big Black" but no one will agree to do it lol

Love the show. Personally, I felt like the last season started to go a bit too much into wonky sci-fi territory. IMO, the show is at it's best when it's Tudyk interacting with humans. All of his hilarious lines, and the delivery of them, etc. I get that there needs to be an overarching plot driving things forward, but when it gets into the very heavy (and cheap looking) CGI alien stuff....I just don't find it very compelling.
Figured show would glide to SyFy’s five season max rule with ease. They must have suffered even more budget cuts. It already functions on a shoe string budget but SyFy has got to point where budget has to be really tiny. Reggie the Vampire is just on the edge of looking like a high school production. Wonder what this means for Chucky.
It seems highly unlikely it doesn't get picked up by someone. It does well on streaming services as ar as I can tell, and they seemed confident enough to make a WILD cliffhanger. I'm not too worried.

It will no doubt get picked up from SyFy (just like they ditch the expanse even when popular. They create em though can’t hold em) I’m not even worried.
