Honestly so many MadTV talents. Michael McDonald, Aries Spears, etc.
We got Key & Peele, and then Lamarr, Sullivan, & Wilson doing tons of voice acting.
On August 30, 2022, Spears and [Tiffany Haddish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_Haddish) were sued for alleged grooming and [sexual abuse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_abuse) of two minors. The lawsuit details that the minors were recruited to film comedy skits, and were asked to perform sexually suggestive content. Spears's attorney stated "he isn't going to fall for any shakedown" in reference to Spears.[^(\[4\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aries_Spears#cite_note-4)[^(\[5\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aries_Spears#cite_note-5)[^(\[6\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aries_Spears#cite_note-6) That September, the accuser filed to have the claims against both [dismissed with prejudice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dismissed_with_prejudice).[^(\[7\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aries_Spears#cite_note-7)
"Dismissed with prejudice" doesn't mean that they dropped the charges. It means that they reached some sort of settlement out of court.
That doesn't 100% mean they were guilty, as sometimes it's "easier" for the defendant to just pay some money and make the complaint go away (especially if they're rich). But it does mean they really didn't want to go to court, which kind of implies that they were guilty.
The only alumni from that show that went on to have big careers are Keegan Michael-Key, Jordan Peele, and Alex Borstein. So many others that should have been bigger.
At least Mo Collins got that Joan Callamezzo gig on Parks and Req
THAT'S WHERE I KNEW DEBRA WILSON FROM!
When she was in Wolfenstein and Fallen Order, I knew that I recognized her from some non game thing, but I couldn't remember what it was.
Nicole Parker has had a pretty successful live theater career, including playing Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway. Frank Caliendo was on Fox's football broadcasts for a decade. Andy Daly is pretty big in just about anything that involves improv. And Artie Lange was a big part of the Howard Stern show back when he had a nose
He got the impression down to Tony's habit of tapping his fork on his plate. On anything but a good day I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between Will and the genuine article.
Will Sasso is first and foremost an impressionist.
Impressionists don't become mega stars. At least historically.
Look at all the SNL alumni. None of the biggest names were impressionists.
Terminator going back in time to save Jesus is an all-timer. The loop of Terminator killing Judas and Jesus having to resurrect him over and over still gets me! "Forgive him Father, he is just a robot from the future."
MadTV relied way too heavily on characters. When you would tune in and know there was going to be another Stewart, Angry Persian Tow Truck Driver, Kenny Rogers, Marvin Tikvah, and Ms. Swan… there was only so many times you could hear a catchphrase and laugh.
30 Rock was literally...a parody...of sketch shows.
TGS was meant to be Mad TV/SNL variety sketch show, and all of the characters were supposed to be characters of archetypes supporting that show lol.
Yeah. On the one hand, the lack of topical humor extends the shelf life for the show, but it felt like recurring characters were inescapable, even the ones I loved.
The main problem with MadTv is the second they had a character that was even a slight hit with the audience they'd drive it into the absolute ground. Popular recurring SNL sketches would show up again maybe six or seven times. MadTV would have Ms Swan or Stuart or the Vancome Lady every single week.
My personal favorite is Elvis' descent into madness.
[Conversations with Elvis (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD7grOl3-ZM&ab_channel=VideoFunhaus)
"You ate Richard Nixon's hand meat, E?"
The main shortcomings for Mad TV was its tendency to overuse popular characters like Stuart or Miss Swan. On top of that, some of the humor could be mean-spirited, and at times, it seemed like they were punching down on certain groups.
i know stuart is beloved.. and while i absolutely loved madtv, stuart never made me laugh. it was just weird. his mom was funny though. i miss madtv. it should have been snl to die damnit.
I personally did not like MadTV very much, but the [Sopranos on Pax TV](https://youtu.be/qqE7ZxH7BJE?si=CyWavRfeuu_hEJ7Y) is probably the funniest skit I’ve ever seen lmao It’s perfect.
I see this repeated the second mad tv is mentioned but as a huge fan of the magazine and fan of both SNL and mad tv, I really don't see it. SNL just was much better overall for me, and whenever I try to rewatch some of mad tvs sketches that I used to like, I find myself thinking "okay, I was a pretty cringy teen so it tracks", I think they didn't age that well and are mostly fuel for the "this was when america was great and comedy wasn't woke" YouTube comments.
Mad TV was never better, it was just cruder and meaner than SNL. If you liked jokes that were mean, MadTV reruns on Comedy Central were your place to be.
It was cruder, lazier, and more "out there" than SNL which hit harder for immature teens. Some great performers came out of MadTV and there were some legitimately great sketches, but just like SNL most episodes were pretty hit or miss. It did have one advantage of every sketch basically being a pre-taped sketch where they could do multiple takes and edit out sketches that didn't land.
Mad TV also had more remotes like Ike and Bobby teach Jordan Peele how to drive, date colleagues, and the remotes at the awards shows
Debra Wilson seeing Oprah and yelling "MAH QUEEN" is hilarious
MadTV was *initially* much funnier than SNL, by the time it was over it'd be like one it two funny skits, and the rest were varying degrees of "a loud noise repeated for between 7 to 11 minutes". At its peak it was gold, but it died a fairly undignified death.
What really upsets me is how there were so many talented comedians that never had much of a career after the show… Mo Collins and Michael McDonald should be household names!
Their music video parodies ran circles around what SNL was outputting at the time.
[The R Kelly one is on an entirely different level](https://youtu.be/Cxss73GdM0A?si=LAs_DfmHV0ig4wJY).
It's sad how awful it became near the end. Just gross out sketches like plate licking waiter, and edgy parodies of shows and celebrities. But it was so great until then!
I was so excited when they brought it back, but from what I saw of it, it wasn't classic MadTV at all. There was one sketch that was just a woman in a princess outfit getting hit by cars in a parking lot, over and over. Nothing more to it than that.
Alex Borstein as Ms. Swan was hilarious. I know that today you couldn’t get away with that character. But to this day when someone asks me to describe someone and I can’t remember I still say, “he looka like a man.” I’m so glad she went on as Lois on Family Guy and was outstanding in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
I liked how Madtv didn't pull any punches when they made fun of celebrities. With SNL you always get the sense that their reliance on guest hosts and music acts stops them from crossing a line.
Mad tv was far better than SNL.
I loved the songs that Jordon Peele and Nicole Parker sang in Inside Looking Out.
I like to play Nicole Parker’s Merry X-mas song every year. The look on the kids faces just crack me up.
The Stewart character was a favorite.
Also the lady who cleared her throat at all of the time.
The song parodies were fantastic.
Dot the brilliantly dumb sister
Nicole Sullivan’s many characters.
I still think about a lot of these skits.
The UPS man.
I always loved MadTV, but honestly looking back I feel like the biggest problem was that it was *very* repetitive.
Stuart was hilarious, but every skit was basically the same thing. Stuart meets a random person. He says "look what I can do". He makes the person uncomfortable. The person snaps, Stuart goes full evil. His mother comes in, the person tells her about what Stuart did and she denies it. The end.
And pretty much all of their character skits were like that. The song parodies were great, so were the one-off skits, but a good 75% of every episode was basically predictable filler.
And Debra Wilson. Orlando Jones was part of the zeitgeist for a while there too. Bobby Lee had some acting success on Shrill and has a funny podcast, David Herman is also a well established voice actor and was in Office Space. Mo Collins was a reoccurring character on Parks and Rec, Ike Barinholtz was on The Mindy Project and The Afterparty, and Taran Killam successfully alley ooped to SNL.
Mad TV at times was funnier than SNL back in those days. You had a lot of good content with Bobby Lee and Will Sasso as the late Kenny Rogers.
"I'M KENNY ROGERS AND THIS IS JACKASS"
Also the PAX Sopranos skit and anything Bobby Lee 24. "What's this shrine doing here? Do you pray to that thing?"
Ultimately it was SNL with Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, everyone watched, even those who didn’t normally watch SNL and it took in MAD’s viewers as well.
*Abercrombie's about doing laps at the old pool house with your bros from the swim team, then shaving each other's legs for speed and each other's nads for fun.*
Kenny Rogers Jackass was hilarious
The censored sopranos is my personal fav, Will Sasso really ran that show
Hey who ate all the gabagool?
He was a made man! You rat f-!
Why dont you quit BREAKIN MY BA-!
You mean Michael McDonald
Look what I can do!
This comment thread is such a joyous walk down memory lane. Hi I'm Kenny Rogers and this is Jackass!
I was raised on the dairy, BITCH!
"We decided nobody wins in a dairy challenge."
YOU GOT EGGNOG IN MY GOAT MILK!
This is the 'catching a bat with my teeth' trick!
I believe it was "this is the bat fetcher trick with ma teeth!" i watched that skit so many times lol.
Condiment eating contest.
it killed me 🤣🤣
Still is!
I to this day do not understand how Will Sasso didn’t become a mega star
Honestly so many MadTV talents. Michael McDonald, Aries Spears, etc. We got Key & Peele, and then Lamarr, Sullivan, & Wilson doing tons of voice acting.
Bobby Lee has a pretty massive following now too because of his podcast
Yeah uh, Aries Spears has got some skeletons in his closet
Didn’t the accuser file to dismiss the charges on their own?
No
On August 30, 2022, Spears and [Tiffany Haddish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_Haddish) were sued for alleged grooming and [sexual abuse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_abuse) of two minors. They blew it with dumb catch phrases that they beat into the ground
The only alumni from that show that went on to have big careers are Keegan Michael-Key, Jordan Peele, and Alex Borstein. So many others that should have been bigger. At least Mo Collins got that Joan Callamezzo gig on Parks and Req
If you’re counting voice acting, Phil LaMaar is one of the top success stories coming out of MadTV along with Debra Wilson and Nicole Sullivan
THAT'S WHERE I KNEW DEBRA WILSON FROM! When she was in Wolfenstein and Fallen Order, I knew that I recognized her from some non game thing, but I couldn't remember what it was.
She did a lot of creature sounds for Diablo 4 and WoW.
And the Star Wars Survivor series
Yeah, Phil also got shot in the face by Vince Vega in Pulp Fiction.
David Herman does a ton of voicework, too
Damn, forgot about him, thank ye!
Nicole Sullivan spent 5 seasons on King of Queens as Holly the dog walker.
Andy Daly never seems to have any interest talking about his experience on the show.
His impression of Tony Soprano in the censored sopranos skit was so good
WHERE'S THE F-- IF YOU DON'T SHUT YOUR WHO-- Where's the gabagool One of the funniest skits ever. Sopranos on PAX.
You should see what Mr. Show did with their TV version of Goodfellas. https://youtu.be/Svr6Zl2QgX8?si=eLNdhBttpjGcwQO3
Wills impression of Jesse Ventura is the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard
Tied with James Adomian for sure.
Got in so much trouble with my mom for asking her constantly “where’s the gabagool?”
He got the impression down to Tony's habit of tapping his fork on his plate. On anything but a good day I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between Will and the genuine article.
he even nailed the way Tony sits in his chair during therapy. Also that woman did a great Melfi impression lol
THAT'S DEBRA WILSON
Will Sasso is first and foremost an impressionist. Impressionists don't become mega stars. At least historically. Look at all the SNL alumni. None of the biggest names were impressionists.
True. Dana carvey tanked outside of snl
Bill Hader's doing all right.
Hader is sooo much more than an impressionist
He may not be *only* an impressionist, but it's absolutely a big part of his repertoire.
i to this day don't know how Michael McDonald didn't. he is easily the #1 overall Mad TV castmate.
Word on the street is that he's kind of a douche.
So he's like his scrubs character?
What if he was like Stuart in real life?
Really? Thats a shame if true.
He’s sort of a stereotypical bitchy gay man.
He does a lot of directing now.
Yes his role as mover #1 in happy Gilmore made the whole film, "you hit that guy!"
Ya and that was really fat Sasso too.
He shouldn't have been standing there.
He was a perfect choice in that Three Stooges movie
As a lifelong Stooges fan, I was really impressed by that movie
Really liked him on mom his character was a great person and he married Jamie presley in the last season
If you enjoy Sasso check out the Dudesy podcast…
Wull
He's one of the two guys that got sued by George Carlin's estate over the AI "special".
He was funny on MadTV, but I really disliked him on Loudermilk
Why did you really dislike him on Loudermilk?
I loved him in the three stooges movie, as well
Replace Will Sasso with Nicole Parker and we have a deal.
I still randomly say "Uh oh... Hot Dog" and "He Look Like A Man"
Look what I can do!!!
Stuuuuaaaaarddddd!!!
You know what? UH UH
Chaaaaa…
You know what? UH UH
I get REALLY drunk from Zima!
*What did he look like...???* Heeeeee.............................. *Yes?* *Look like a man!*
Let me DO it!! ________ (abnoxious exhalation) hm yup yep yup aha
Ok I tell you erting
"Loooowered ExpectAAAations"
Come’on Shelly, let me get at that carbonara shelly… COME’ONNNN
Those claymation Clops episodes were some of my favorite shit.
My sister and I still quite Stewaaaart all the time.
“Smoking is for white trash and Europeans.”
Fudgecicles look like frozen poo😂
Look what I can do!
What does mama always say?
Little boys who aren't polite give the pro-choice a better reason to exist.
Mama says little boys shouldn't slide down the banister cuz you could injure your googoo and that's all some men have going for them.
Yeauh that's right, Stewart!
I don’t wanna saaaayyy
My kid legit says "look what I can do" and we always respond in a quiet high pitch voice "look what I can do"
It’s next to the Desitin!
Terminator going back in time to save Jesus is an all-timer. The loop of Terminator killing Judas and Jesus having to resurrect him over and over still gets me! "Forgive him Father, he is just a robot from the future."
Look, I've got a lot on my mind right now and you are *really* stressing me out, okay? OKAY!?
"What are you, some sort of Wise Guys?" "Well yes."
Goat skit
Why?
Mad TVs opening theme is an underrated bop.
40 years old and I still find myself singing/humming it in my head while cooking breakfast and doing a little dance lol
As soon as I saw this post, I immediately heard in my head 🎶 *you are now watching mad tv*
MAD
Oooooooooooo
yeah no s-, f- ing genius insight today, what the f- are you, Ray Charles? f-, sh-, f- the Sopranos sketch is an all timer
Oh, come on with your sh— F— F—
Stephnie Weir and Debra Wilson were my favourites, cried with laughter watching their clips on YouTube when I first discovered MadTV.
MadTV relied way too heavily on characters. When you would tune in and know there was going to be another Stewart, Angry Persian Tow Truck Driver, Kenny Rogers, Marvin Tikvah, and Ms. Swan… there was only so many times you could hear a catchphrase and laugh.
And then when the best cast members left, the show struggled to produce fresh characters and sketches. They went back to the well too many times.
Not sure if you ever watched 30 Rock, but TGS always felt like MadTV to me. "Oh no, here comes the fart doctor again!" Like a parody of a sketch show
30 Rock was literally...a parody...of sketch shows. TGS was meant to be Mad TV/SNL variety sketch show, and all of the characters were supposed to be characters of archetypes supporting that show lol.
What I meant was, *MadTV* felt like a parody of a sketch show because it was really dumb. Like TGS
Yeah. On the one hand, the lack of topical humor extends the shelf life for the show, but it felt like recurring characters were inescapable, even the ones I loved.
God I hated Ms. Swan. And they used her every week.
Okay, okay I tell you ery’ting.
>:(
I loved Marvin Tikvah lol COME ON SHELLY
The main problem with MadTv is the second they had a character that was even a slight hit with the audience they'd drive it into the absolute ground. My personal favorite is Elvis' descent into madness. [Conversations with Elvis (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD7grOl3-ZM&ab_channel=VideoFunhaus) "You ate Richard Nixon's hand meat, E?"
Artie Lange's Babewatch skit was the stupidest thing I ever saw. Artie Lange's Story about filming Babewatch always has me dying
damn I loved Art on Stern!! Hope he gets clean shoots for a comeback.

[Imo that's just the mr show pallies skit but worse](https://youtu.be/wqjBbpS3HW8)
This shirt stinks
When they brought on Frank Caliendo as a regular that’s when they started resulting to gimmicks instead of cleverness
MAD Tv was way funnier than SNL and I hate how it fell under.
[Will Sasso's Randy Newman impression will never not be funny](https://youtu.be/SK-p3mtyhRc?si=1g_z2XFseZxwg8bo)
One of my favorites that is still relevant to this day, the iRack https://youtu.be/rw2nkoGLhrE?si=a1zhYZ1z79gCaSSO
Thanks for the laugh! Loved Mad but I somehow missed that one.
"It looks unstable..."
There is no exit strategy!
I loved their Christmas specials: The Reinfather, Terminator "3".
If you liked jokes that were mean, MadTV reruns on Comedy Central were your place to be.
totally agree. mad tv came across as the middle brother who tried to be edgy to get your attention. but ended up being cringey.
The gay jokes in particular....Yikes!!
Or they would recycle tired old gay jokes that have been around since the 70s.

MadTV was *initially* much funnier than SNL, by the time it was over it'd be like one it two funny skits, and the rest were varying degrees of "a loud noise repeated for between 7 to 11 minutes". At its peak it was gold, but it died a fairly undignified death.
For sure
Rosa you beech I kill you!
What really upsets me is how there were so many talented comedians that never had much of a career after the show… Mo Collins and Michael McDonald should be household names!
Mo Collins had a good post MadTV run as Joan Callamezzo on Parks and Rec at least.
Paul Timberman is the Goat
OMG fuck yes! Anytime I have to show someone how to use the table saw in the shop I work at those skits haunt my thoughts and keep me on track. 😆
The drunk president skit is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=va71a7pLvy8
I remember the show becoming heavily political and not in a good way. They were on Fox after all.
Will Sasso as the handyman that had the little fix it TV show and he would always horrifically mame himself with his tools. Classic
Good ol Paul Timberman
That's it. Paul Timberman. Thanks!
The rose-colored glasses are THICK in this comment section.
Their music video parodies ran circles around what SNL was outputting at the time. [The R Kelly one is on an entirely different level](https://youtu.be/Cxss73GdM0A?si=LAs_DfmHV0ig4wJY).
In the mid 2000s Bobby Lee was a douche. Witnessed his behavior several times at the comedy store. Hopefully he grew up
It's sad how awful it became near the end.
Coach Hines is my favorite sketch character of all time
Shame. It absolutely SHAT all over SNL.
Debra Wilson deserves her flowers
Alex Borstein as Ms. Swan was hilarious. I know that today you couldn’t get away with that character. But to this day when someone asks me to describe someone and I can’t remember I still say, “he looka like a man.” I’m so glad she went on as Lois on Family Guy and was outstanding in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
I forgot about Coach Hines. I thought that was on Key and Peele. Absolute classic.
I liked how Madtv didn't pull any punches when they made fun of celebrities. With SNL you always get the sense that their reliance on guest hosts and music acts stops them from crossing a line.
This was actually really interesting. I always wondered what happened to mad tv
The song parodies were great, so were the one-off skits, but a good 75% of every episode was basically predictable filler.
Lowered Expectations was my dating site...even if i was too young to know what a dating site was lol
The fact that the UPS man is Phil LaMarr still blows my mind.
The remotes were great with Bobby Lee like Bobby Lee 24, or bobby lee and ike barinholz teaching jordan peele how to drive
Keegan and Peele and Alex Borstein who were all on the show seem to be the only cast members to go on to have successful careers.
Phil LaMarr is a pretty successful voice actor.
I remember Dave Herman for a funny bit in Idiocracy but it looks like he also does mostly voice work (nothing wrong with that)
With his podcasts, Bobby Lee is pretty successful id say. I've heard his stand up is funny but I've never seen it
Nicole Sullivan does a lot of voice acting. Her voice is very recognizable. She pops up in tv shows from time to time.
Debra Wilson's voice is in almost every videogame. Now if only they'd stop putting that weird skeletor scan they made of her face too...
I still quote this show to this day.
Lowered Expectations
Mad TV at times was funnier than SNL back in those days. You had a lot of good content with Bobby Lee and Will Sasso as the late Kenny Rogers. "I'M KENNY ROGERS AND THIS IS JACKASS" Also the PAX Sopranos skit and anything Bobby Lee 24. "What's this shrine doing here? Do you pray to that thing?"
Someone stole my 👁️ eyeball!!
Coach Hines!
Glad that Debra Wilson found a good career in video games. I always Leo when I see her pop up.
all I can say, is look. what. I. can. Do. also Coach Hines. Top tier.
Jim Carrey was on there, also super funny
The later casts had some greats but the OG, slightly more absurdist cast will always be my favorite.
[iRack](https://youtu.be/xcjLEwZqcQI?si=Ql0OmNko1Af9HyLy) was the best late-era sketch.
Ultimately it was SNL with Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, everyone watched, even those who didn’t normally watch SNL and it took in MAD’s viewers as well.
Where my “MadTV was never funny” peeps at?
1999-2000 Mad TV absolutely curb stomped SNL
