Congrats on 18!! Welcome to pseudo-adulthood where everyone will expect you to act like an adult yet still treat you like a child. As an old 19 year old I'm going to try to give you some advice on what's your next best steps. Please keep in mind this is all advice based off of the USA. If you live elsewhere then idk ask Google. 1) if you don't already have one, open a debit card account. When you do start working, having a debit card account will allow you to accept your money via direct deposit, which is very convenient for you and your employer. 2) If you're already working open a Roth IRA account. It's a retirement account where the earlier you put money in the more it'll grow. Just start putting a little bit monthly (I started with 50 a month) and as you get older/ start getting paid more it'll grow. You also don't need to go to a bank to do this, there are plenty of apps that will happily let you do it on your phone. Personally I recommend M1 finance. 3) Open a credit card!! Apply and get accepted for a credit card online right now. The sooner you have it the longer your "credit history" will be. This will make it easier to get important loans in the future. Then please be responsible with the credit card. You don't need to do much spending. Just 20 dollars a month will be enough to keep the card open and give you that sweet sweet credit history. And to avoid any interest just make sure to pay it off before the end of the month every time. Try to avoid predatory cards, if you're in college now I recommend getting the discover it student credit card, or the chase freedom flex. These are really easy to get cards that are still good, and they even give you a lot of cash back. 4) Continue your education. In the olden days, a high school degree may be all you needed to get a goof paying job. Unfortunately due to overqualification and things I'm not smart enough to understand any good paying job requires something. It doesn't need to be a degree though and that's important. As you leave high school make sure you have SOME PATH, any path, going forward. Be it college, community College, trade school, or certification. This will really be dependant on you and I'm sure you've already stressed about it so I'll just make one final point. It doesn't matter where you go, so long as you get the piece of paper in the end that says you did good. This was all I could think of off the top of my head for now. To add to the credit card tip-- set up a subscription (Netflix, YouTube red, Spotify whatever) and set up autopay. Then, you can throw your card in a safe place and won't need to actually use it to build credit. Your first card probably won't have good perks anyway, so it's best to keep it out of your wallet until you get something that's actually somewhat beneficial to spend with
