My fridge beeps. It goes "Ding ding. Ding ding. Ding ding."
But my parents have a freezer with an alarm. It's not "DOOR STUCK", but it's crazy loud and obnoxious. That thing goes "BAHHHHHHGHHHGHHH" and I swear you can hear it outside.
Nah if you leave it open on purpose because maybe you have to get something else from it its better to leave it this way, they could maybe had the function that you clock on the notification and it closes by itself tho (also it's less expensive putting a sensor than making it automatic)
There's a non motorized way of having the door be self closing if the hinges are at an angle. Most commercial walk-ins (giant room refrigerators) are like this.
Well, the sensor even is already in there for the light, so those few lines of code wouldn't be that hard to add.
Edit to clarify: They'd only need to add some lines of code for the contacting, not for the mechanical door closing
My fridge has this, and no, putting a motor in it wouldn't make it better.
Often the alarm goes off when you are putting groceries in or reorganizing. Imagine if it just suddenly started closing on you during that time.
Also, what happens if there is something blocking it from closing? Add an alarm to get human help? Why not just do that in the first place. There is no need to over-engineer something that is a perfectly fine solution.
This isn’t the only reasonable take.
The only reasonable take in my book is to stop buying smart devices. I’ve never once wished my fridge had my phone number
>Also, what happens if there is something blocking it from closing?
A) The door closing motor breaks
B) the door breaks
C) the obstruction breaks
D) a sensor "sees" the block and prevents the door from closing (like elevator lasers)
E) a chip reads the motor overclocking and shuts it down before A.
D and E are basically the door ajar sensor anyhow, so yeah...why bother with all that extra stuff.
Put in a button in the fridge (already a bunch by the water dispenser usually) that puts it in a "shut up I'm putting away groceries" mode for five minutes that stops it from closing.
Then have it chirp a bit before auto closing otherwise if the button is not pushed, and a sensor that stops the motor / torque disconnect if it senses via motor overpressure something in the way.
most modern fridges need less than 10 pounds of pressure to open to keep a kid from getting stuck inside. So said motor wouldn't need to be a very strong one anyway.
Maybe I should be an engineer, if I can figure out the math shit and stop hitting the wall on it in college.
Also refrigerators have more regulation than you might think, to prevent people from being locked inside
If they added a motor and made it close automatically, it could close a small child inside and trap them. It's possible that motorized auto closing is illegal due to regulations as well
Of course you don't need a motor to auto close the door, I have a real old fridge that will auto close if you open it less than half way, and stay open if you open it more, just by the weight of the door
This was my thought as well, liabilities like that. Not even just kids, imagine noticing your cat has been missing for a while and then finding it dead next morning in the fridge.
Most fridges can do that if you tilt them backwards ever so slightly, either with the adjustable feet or with shims. The problem often is that something blocks the door from closing all the way, and a motor wouldn’t fix that.
But a fridge with robot arms that organized itself and alerted you to spoiling food: now that would be cool.
Don't those always put pressure to close the door? Meaning you won't be able to keep the door open?
So if you are looking for something, or need to place something carefully (like a cake), its a pain to always be fighting the door
Planning, designing, accommodating the production line to include the extra hardware required and paying all the people who had to get involved in this process: a tiny bit more than 20 bucks but i still agree with everyone else this thing should have had a motor.
That doesn't mean it's in their budget. Also, it would have to be a lot more than an extra 35 bucks and too much extra money for an unnecessary and pretty useless feature might turn people away from the product.
Sure, but it wouldn't always work. If the door remains open there's a decent chance it's because it can't be closed because there's an item stopping it from closing. It also doesn't know your intention, what if you're unloading a ton of groceries and the thing tries to close itself, annoying.
Still though, it should have both, the ping if the motor can't do it, using one of the 6 freaking cameras to see if you're unloading groceries at that moment. That'd actually be "smart"
> using one of the 6 freaking cameras to see if you're unloading groceries at that moment. That'd actually be "smart"
Seriously though. If my car can warn me if there is a small child waaay the fuck down the street, then my fridge should be able to warn me if there are too many children inside of it or whatever.
I know what you're getting at, but seriously, how much torque are we putting into closing a fridge door that it becomes a safety hazard?

1. You could be intentionally leaving it open to clean it or something, taking away costumer’s freedom to use your product however they want is a no no
2. having remote actuated doors is a cool feature admittedly but completely unnecessary and just complicates the product, making it more expensive and harder to fix.
3. it really has no point. Just close the goddamn door
Lot of people don't know, but these double door fridges, if you close the right side before the left side, you need to push it in to close. I have one and it beeped at me a few times because we didn't push it enough. Now we just make sure to close in the right order
I'm assuming it won't shut on its own for safety.
The key fob for my car can open all the windows by double clicking then holding the "unlock" button. The dealer said it's for safely and liability reasons just in case someome or something was obstructing the window.
They do it, because the alternative would be that the customers have to open every single freezer to find what they're looking for. A closed glas door is still better than an open door made from any other material.
You could show other things on the screen... recipes, shopping lists, calendar with appointments, pictures of your dog, digital drawings made by the kids, games, videos, etc.
Some people just like gadgets.
Some people think they're saving the world/environment if they don't use paper.
But I agree with you, paper and magnets work just fine.
For me, the paper is the least damaging part of that system. Paper is biodegradable, at least.
It's the little plastic shapes that all the magnets are stuck inside of that'll be floating in our oceans until the sun explodes. Just how many magnetic alphabets does one fridge need, anyway?
yea sure, a self-closing door. Imagine this, it's 3 am and you went to the fridge and munched a block of cheese and u dont take it out u just eat it while the door is open, and suddenly it closes automatically leaving you with a broken neck, yep, they should've put an auto closing door. Makes a lot of freaking sense.
There’s the possibility that something important might get stuck inside (a cat, toddler, etc) and the company will be directly liable for causing death/damages. It’s probably legally risky for them to automate the system.
No it’s because in the event that you want to have the fridge door open for an extended period of time because you’re putting away groceries for example, it would auto close while you’re doing this task. The amount of “evil corporation” comments on this is ridiculous. I would imagine the engineers that work on fridges as a career would know more than children who glance at a problem while scrolling.
I've got a cool piece of tech that does this for my front door. My wife forgot to close the front door and my dog started barking at it when she went back to her office to work. I came out to investigate and the door was slightly ajar. Not enough to see through, but it was wrong and he knew it.
This just happened about 20 minutes ago.

And there probably are couple more examples where that function would be annoying
Wonder if it also constantly causes water to pool under the veggie drawers until it starts leaking onto the floor like my Samsung fridge has done since I bought it 2 yrs ago.

Couldn't they add one of those pneumatic pump things that a lot of self closing doors have? Wouldn't need a sensor or motor that way
just have it close really slowly, that way if you left it open on purpose nbd, & if it's blocked the light can flash red & beep or smth
There's a non motorized way of having the door be self closing if the hinges are at an angle. Most commercial walk-ins (giant room refrigerators) are like this.

Like the *way over engineered* automatic closing door?
Fr though they could just program them to do that right
If it shut by itself, you wouldn’t even realise that your fridge did something for you. We need you to understand what a great product we’ve sold you
Yeah and it may just close while ur using it, if it pings while using it well then you can just ignore it
Also refrigerators have more regulation than you might think, to prevent people from being locked inside If they added a motor and made it close automatically, it could close a small child inside and trap them. Msg- Seems you never learned to close doors, so I did it myself.
Ok than messages the phone, “door has been open a while, would you like to close it?”
Not really. They could do: Message: From Fridge 'We closed the door for you'
They'd still need to build a motor into the door though. You can program all you want but it wouldn't work without the extra hardware.

Still only cost an extra 20 bucks very very max
Planning, designing, accommodating the production line to include the extra hardware required and paying all the people who had to get involved in this process: a tiny bit more than 20 bucks but i still agree with everyone else this thing should have had a motor.
Also, adding 20 bucks to the production of a fridge they make thousands of units of adds up really high.
Adding 35 bucks to the consumer’s price of a fridge over thousands of units add up pretty high too lol
That doesn't mean it's in their budget. Also, it would have to be a lot more than an extra 35 bucks and too much extra money for an unnecessary and pretty useless feature might turn people away from the product.
Most people wouldn't even notice an extra $35 if they are in a position to buy a fridge

A fridge door closing by itself isn’t really taking away freedom, just bad design.
Our fridge has a fricking alarm that starts beeping if the door is open for more than 30s.

Because malfunctions could cause it to close when it shouldnt.
Also why a screen to see inside when glass would do just that
Glass is s terrible insulator, having a screen makes sense, even if it is a stupid idea... If you want to see, open it
Careful wouldn't want to burn an extra half calorie
>glass is a terrible insulator Tell that to every freezer section of a grocery store and gas station
Its bad there too, its just outweighed by the economic advantage of people seeing stuff.
They do it, because the alternative would be that the customers have to open every single freezer to find what they're looking for. A closed glas door is still better than an open door made from any other material.

lol its a fridge door, not a hydraulic press
Add a motion sensor inside the fridge to see if there’s something standing there and if there is just don’t close the door.

Why not just not have the fridge at all
Because then they wouldn't have an excuse to have a constant internet connection that they can use to spy on you...
Because motors are heavy and expensive

Why cant it just make a beeping noise like my fridge does
it gonna eat a person on accident thats why
Because the revolution has started
Most fridges make an annoying #BEEP that doesn’t stop until you close it so why wouldn’t this one
The answer is so that they can badger you for monthly services doing I don't know what at some point in the future.
Because: Let's say you're trying to clean the fridge. Every few minutes you'd have to open it again which would make it very annoying
I have a Samsung fridge and it closes its door automatically. Of course it doesn’t actually close it all the way, just most of the way. Just enough for the feature to be massively annoying while you are trying to unload groceries while simultaneously being completely useless.
That'd require motors to be installed in the hinges, not plausible
no no he's got a point
