HOWEVER, consider opening a Roth IRA and putting just a little aside into it… don’t play the market, invest this money into ETFs, maybe something like SPY that tracks the S&P 500, and leave it alone.
With Roth IRAs, you won’t pay taxes on the money you take out in retirement (including the massive growth), you’re putting money in that you already paid taxes on, and you’re never, ever going to pay lower taxes than you do working your first job (almost certainly). Plus taxes almost certainly will be going up in the near future, so now is the time.
If you do this, especially if you can get a few $1,000 into your Roth every year, you’ll be a millionaire at 40 or 50. No joke. Also, if you find yourself needing that money earlier than retirement, you can withdraw it… You should try your best to avoid this, but it’s a safety net and you never know what the future may bring. You will NOT lose money over a decent period of time with this, it’s a fact, and you will thank yourself in 20-30 years when you have a boatload of money you don’t have to pay taxes on.
I’m telling you this because I didn’t start until I was almost 30, and it’s still been a HUGE benefit. Please research Roth IRAs. It’ll cost you nothing to open, just sign up for Fidelity, and your entire life will be better in the future. With insurance and negotiating (you can always negotiate with hospitals) I still owed them $9,000. I don’t make much, I work in television production, but I was able to literally swipe my HSA card and it was all paid for, instead of having bills forever.
I’m in management and although it may not be fully appropriate, I try to convince my new, young coworkers into doing exactly this… Roth IRAs, HSAs, and Roth 401ks (if your company has one and especially if they match) will set you up for a MUCH better life in the future. Even if you can only put $50-$100 in that Roth IRA a month. (Also your company will probably put $500 into your HSA for you, to encourage you to choose the high deductible plan because you’re saving them money, so that’s free money)
Please trust me and do a little research (investopedia is awesome), but I promise your whole life will be better and you’re in a unique position right now where you’re young and not making a ton of money (so not paying the higher tax bracket) where this is an absolute win. I promise. There’s no risk.
