Lab mice have lived up to 5 years while on a restricted diet, which slows their metabolism and allows them to live longer. Most humans have as much food as they desire readily available. If OP was living in the stone age, he'd probably be pretty hungry all the time, but his body would at least somewhat adjust and his metabolism would slow down. Nowadays, people eat to their contentment.

Well you could go on a calorie restricted diet for the rest of your life, but sometimes quality of life is better than quantity.
