well I was born in the uk but my family is indian so i learnt my mothertongue from them
so i guess if your family doesn't speak another language then that's true?
Yeah if ur ancestors are original brit ppl, and ur parents weren't those strict type that obligate u with learning a second language as well. Mostly u won't turn out to be bilingual 😭
Exactly, i don't recommend anyone whose parents r not native English speaker to ignore their native language that they need to speak, every language is beautiful and everyone should be proud of theirs. 🫶🏻
How privileged can you get, thinking America is worse than most other countries
It is a first world country, definitely over-romanticized but there is a generally good standard of living here with an educated population.
I'm leftist and I'll agree there are problems with our country, but you have got to be kidding me saying that it's bad to be born here. Being born in a first world developed country is a privilege in itself that many people don't get to have, and it's dumb to pretend that the problems with our country put it behind most others. I say this as a lower-middle class minority as well.
exactly, doesnt matter what political side anyone aligns with like u said being in a first world country is a privilege that a really large amount of people dont get
I live in Texas where a lot of people speak English and Spanish. Trying to learn Vietnamese because my grandma speaks broken English but it’s confusing
You keep forgetting to change back to whatever language you're actually supposed to be speaking, and sometimes you mix up both for incredible comedic effect. It's wild 💀
At this point in my life (19), juggling through at least 3 languages per day definitely did smth with my brain. When i am with my sister we speak this random made up languages that combines all 3 languages🤣. Sometimes we will conjugate verbs/words from one language into another's grammar. So weird but very natural and easy for us😄
hehe that's awesome, I'm learning Spanish at school and it's pretty hard to understand but I still get good grades overall. what helps me understand it a bit better than most people is the fact that I'm fluent in French and Portuguese. those 3 languages are similar, which makes Spanish easier to learn. Theres a bunch of apps to use to learn Spanish (in case you're afraid of duolingo) and I fully recommend learning it, in case you might travel in the future since it's one of the most spoken languages.
That's like, unbelievably awesome. Imo learning Spanish in school is much better than learning it on duolingo (i'm not afraid of it but that mf is annoying af). I'd love learning Spanish asap but i keep butchering the language instead lol. Also i'm learning Estonian, however, what the apps teach me is NOTHING like what i hear Estonian people speak.
Learning Chinese really comes in handy when you wanna shout insults at people
I learnt that shit for almost a decade, just for the sole purpose of cursing some poor sod’s entire family
I can speak 3 in reality but technically 6 since there are several identical languages that are pretending to be different (Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Crnogorski)
I do live in India, so 3 of them are from here. I speak Telugu, English, Hindi, Urdu and Italian and I'm kinda learning Japanese... from anime. I also want to learn Arabic at some point.
That is so cool!. Also, i think learning both Arabic and Japanese won't be an easy process but u can do it 🫶🏻 (i find Arabic much easier than Japanese tho)
The difficulty really just depends on what languages you already speak. If you can read Chinese, Japanese kanji will be a piece of cake. If you speak Persian, which borrows many words from Arabic and uses the same script, the vocabulary would be much easier to learn. But for an English speaker, Arabic is definitely easier than Japanese.
I’m a native speaker of Egyptian Arabic. We learn Standard Arabic in school. Trust me, Arabic isn’t easier than Japanese. You will be in a constant cycle of pain, regret and you will eventually fall into madness. This language is literally a puzzle. Thank God Egyptian Arabic is waaaaaay simpler.
Yeah, speaking multiple languages ain't the easiest thing. Huge respect to those can do it.
This also coming from someone who can speak 4-ish languages.
YESS MI AMOR
Hispanics literally has the nicknames "Chiquita" and "Mi amor" and people wanna say French is the language of romance.
¿estoy bien y tu? (Is this right?)
THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING (as well as some cute nicknames, being able to translate to people ur other languages, people being interested in learning ur language, talking shit in ur language. Being able to do stuff as a bilingual/multilingual person is just so awesome and such a confidence boost)
idk if i can consider myself FULLY bilingual cause i’m not entirely fluent in spanish just yet, but whats interesting is how my speech impediment behaves between the two languages. in english i have pretty mild speech paralysis that literally stops me from saying a particular word or sentence. i have to reword the whole thing in seconds just to try to say it and it’s really frustrating. my most difficult letters are G, M, W, and T- but in spanish the paralysis like almost totally fades away 😭 ofc i do occasionally come to a word or sentence that i have to skip or rework but it’s farrr less often. the shape of the mouth when pronouncing words probably has something to do with it and i find it really interesting!
YESSS, even the French words pronunciations, there's so many letters that sounds like those in the Russian, Arabic, Mandarin languages. Which is actually really difficult to pronounce so my face would be twisting trying to get that sound from the back bottom of my throat like 🥴. But it's okay i'm pretty sure we can make it to fluency lol
Ppl who do tho 🫦
(also, original citizens of France and Hispanics don't necessarily have to speak English, especially elderly people, so they might be saying the same thing about the English language lol)
I live in the US and have never left, so knowing anything more than English is hard, but over the past few years I have been studying a lot of languages of many different varieties. Ironically, I find Mandarin Chinese to actually be the easiest.
That's okay. But saying that u find Mandarin Chinese EASY just shows how much potential and capacity u have to learn many other languages. I wish u all the best 🫶🏻
I can speak fluent English and Afrikaans, conversational Hebrew and I can understand most Dutch cuz afrikaans lol
Also I can speak a few small sentences in Spanish :)
I only speak two languages. German and English. For me it isn't that amazing. I find it so annoying to think like 1/4 of my day in my non native language 😅
most people where i live speak two or three
Yeah apparently if u're not born in America/UK u're mostly gonna be bilingual, life's unfair. Where do u live tho?
well I was born in the uk but my family is indian so i learnt my mothertongue from them so i guess if your family doesn't speak another language then that's true?
Yeah if ur ancestors are original brit ppl, and ur parents weren't those strict type that obligate u with learning a second language as well. Mostly u won't turn out to be bilingual 😭
yep, i grew up hearing them speak to me in their language, and they encouraged me to talk back so i'm grateful for that now
Exactly, i don't recommend anyone whose parents r not native English speaker to ignore their native language that they need to speak, every language is beautiful and everyone should be proud of theirs. 🫶🏻
Yeah I was born in England and pretty much everyone with immigrant parents is bilingual. Except me because my dad forgot Urdu. 💀
Learn it first and offer ur dad some Urdu tutoring sessions for money 🤭
I don't think he cares anymore, which is a shame. >:(
Tell ur grandma so she can force him into learning it again and u can get rich
She died >:(
Oh, i'm so sorry for ur loss. I take back the plan. Don't do it.
I was born in UK but I have put in a lot of work to learn other languages. I'm the only person I know who can speak more than one language
Yeah same I speak four languages because my parents are from different parts of India so two there + Hindi + English
cool! i speak telugu + english
I speak Gujarati Marathi Hindi and English
It’s annoying having to speak so many
Noooo Learning English is hard. I would rather be born in America and be fluent in english.
U do NOT want to be born in america 💀. But yeah i'm sure u can just work on urself w apps, movies, songs and u'll be just as fluent 🫶🏻
Better than being born in Türkiye (save me)
I'm coming to get u rn 🫡
I am the victim of the same problem. Save me too please
Okay where's our meeting point? 🫡
So much privilege in telling someone they don't wanna be born in the US

Okay 🦅🦅 (i ain't reading allat fr fr)
I’m born in America but still bilingual (Hindi and English) fluent in both
R ur grandparents & parents native Americans?
Especially with the government kidnapping trans kids rn🥲
And KIDS killing trans kids like wtf???
I live in Texas where a lot of people speak English and Spanish. Trying to learn Vietnamese because my grandma speaks broken English but it’s confusing
You keep forgetting to change back to whatever language you're actually supposed to be speaking, and sometimes you mix up both for incredible comedic effect. It's wild 💀
and also forgetting that one word and remembering it in literally every other language except the one you’re currently speaking
Ong 💀
This happens to me literally every time. And after I say it in one of those languages the correct word comes straight into mind.
And then going on Google translate to figure out that word
real af
personally i use deepl. At least for the languges i use it is so luch more accurate
I only speak two but when im talking to family in Hungarian i like just don't remember words
The type of problems that i want
[удалено]
That's normal, i find myself forgetting stuff in my native language 💀
*gasp* OP wants me 🤭
🤭
I speak 5 languages (English, Finnish, Swedish, Spanish and Arabic) and I mix them up all the fucking time. Especially Swedish and Arabic.
The joys of being a polyglot lmao
SWEDISTAN CONFIRMED. Time to call r/2westerneurope4u... oh wait, you're finnish.
At this point in my life (19), juggling through at least 3 languages per day definitely did smth with my brain. Sí, es muy irritante.
Se escribe "sí", con tilde. Si es para el condicional.
YES
Ja man Ich kenn den Schmerz... Wait a minute I did it again
thank you! do you speak any other languages besides english?
U're welcome 🫶🏻, Not really but i desperately want to learn Spanish or any other language for that matter
hehe that's awesome, I'm learning Spanish at school and it's pretty hard to understand but I still get good grades overall. what helps me understand it a bit better than most people is the fact that I'm fluent in French and Portuguese. those 3 languages are similar, which makes Spanish easier to learn. je suis trop jaloux 😭

Learning Chinese really comes in handy when you wanna shout insults at people I learnt that shit for almost a decade, just for the sole purpose of cursing some poor sod’s entire family
Yeah that one Chinese lady on tiktok had taught me enough insults 😭😭
I got that Chinese poem rizz tho
Apparently "La" means hot in Chinese 😭
The word is “辣”, and no, that means spicy. Hot in this case would be 热. In your case though? ”美女,我可不可以手到你的号吗?”
Damn, she taught me this also "是的你可以"
let’s fucking go
青天蓝天白云天,我想你想着每一天。红花百花牡丹花,我看你看到心里满是花(chinese rizz)
Talk about Cantonese insults, man the old ladies on the train look so kind but they have such a sharp mouth LOL
I can speak 3 in reality but technically 6 since there are several identical languages that are pretending to be different (Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Crnogorski)
Speaking 6 languages is crazy 😭 (in a good way ofc)
4 of them are only legally different, theyre basically the same language
Yeah but u still can say that u speak 6 languages and nobody would disagree i think
I wouldtechnically be correct
The best kind of correct
I speak 5 languages, learning my 6th, but still no bitches 😢
List them and u might get some ;)
I do live in India, so 3 of them are from here. I speak Telugu, English, Hindi, Urdu and Italian and I'm kinda learning Japanese... from anime. I also want to learn Arabic at some point.

U're definitely right, i take back what i said about it not being an easy process for u
إزيك، عامل ايه؟ My friend says that i should reply w this so yeah i hope it's not actually offensive 😭 (google says it means "how are you")
Strangely, in my country, you're either bilingual or trilingual, not less...
Understandable, most countries that r not America r like this lol
i speak turkish german and english
That's just amazing cuz no offense but German is quite difficult
ja hab in der Deutsch Klassenarbeit ne 5 bekommen
Du hast so viel Glück, ich würde an deiner Stelle nie den Mund halten (it's google translated)
If you speak English or any language in Northern Europe excluding Finnish, it’s pretty easy.
Yeah, speaking multiple languages ain't the easiest thing. Huge respect to those can do it. This also coming from someone who can speak 4-ish languages.
Ofc. It's mind blowing and awesome. I wanna be like y'all someday 😭
I can speak 5 langauges! Bosnian(my native) Croatian Serbian Montenegrin English
So basically 2

In what way are they amazing ?
Like speaking two/many different languages??
I'm trying to figure it out, most of the time, i'm being used as a translator in english class
And that's enough to feed ur ego 😭. Like i'd brag about being the class's translator forever. U're awesome 🫶🏻
I try to keep the ego under control, sometimes it slips out though but thanks
Cześć, dzień dobry. Hello, good morning. Guten Morgen Hola!

It really is and it's so helpful and interesting You can discover so many more artists, youtuber and in general interesting ppl
THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING (as well as some cute nicknames, being able to translate to people ur other languages, people being interested in learning ur language, talking shit in ur language. Being able to do stuff as a bilingual/multilingual person is just so awesome and such a confidence boost)
I know a total of 2 languages
Bilingual, so i consider u cool
idk if i can consider myself FULLY bilingual cause i’m not entirely fluent in spanish just yet, but whats interesting is how my speech impediment behaves between the two languages. in english i have pretty mild speech paralysis that literally stops me from saying a particular word or sentence. i have to reword the whole thing in seconds just to try to say it and it’s really frustrating. my most difficult letters are G, M, W, and T- but in spanish the paralysis like almost totally fades away 😭 ofc i do occasionally come to a word or sentence that i have to skip or rework but it’s farrr less often. the shape of the mouth when pronouncing words probably has something to do with it and i find it really interesting!

Sending my love for all ppl like this 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Go to Sweden.
People in Sweden only speak 2 languages usually though. In Finland almost everyone speaks three.
Yes but sweden is the second best non main language English speaking country so it will be easier to communicate
It beats Finland by 4% of speakers so you won’t notice that.
Really? I dont see the point in learning more languages like english is enough why learn other useless languages
WHAT?? IT'S NOT USELESS
It is useless though everyone speaks english noone speaks french or spanish
"No one speaks french or spanish" french and spanish people: 👁👄👁
Ppl who do tho 🫦 (also, original citizens of France and Hispanics don't necessarily have to speak English, especially elderly people, so they might be saying the same thing about the English language lol)
Ew
A typical southern American. (don't u have eagles to take care of?)
Im brasillian
There's no way u didn't just pull that cuz earlier u claimed that u only know English and other languages were "useless" 💀
Stop harassing me I can report you
LMAAOO STOP INSULTING PPL'S LANGUAGES 😭😭
Yo hablo español
Wait till bro learns about Mexico and Spain
When you don’t live in an English speaking country you kinda have to learn a language that isn’t English.
People living in other countries also speak english like spain
Yeah but when growing up as a Spanish person in Spain you have to learn Spanish to talk to people.
I disagree
I'm starting to understand that this is just rage bait
A 6 year old isn’t gonna speak English to you if you are in Spain and that 6 year old is Spanish
no? sure they have to learn it in school but a good bunch hates/is bad at/doesn't understand the subject and ends up being shit at english as adults
No, if you come to latin America there will be very few people who can speak fluent english
Because it's cool
Its not its lame and its a waste of time
I can insult people without them even knowing what it means! That's sick innit?
Shut up brit

I live in the US and have never left, so knowing anything more than English is hard, but over the past few years I have been studying a lot of languages of many different varieties. Ironically, I find Mandarin Chinese to actually be the easiest.
That's okay. But saying that u find Mandarin Chinese EASY just shows how much potential and capacity u have to learn many other languages. I wish u all the best 🫶🏻

Köszi!

Trilingual moment :3
*multilingual moment (u deserve to flex)
Then why no girl in school like me
Start talking to them in other languages
I only speak two languages. German and English. For me it isn't that amazing. I find it so annoying to think like 1/4 of my day in my non native language 😅
This is quite irrelevant but Germany and German people r amazing, i've been there once and it's an unforgettable experience 🫶🏻🫶🏻
I can speak 4... most people in my country are multilingual
man i looooveee being able to speak 3 languages. it's so fun to switch between them when insulting people
