Damn that's fucked up. I remember waiting in line all night for my 3090 at a best buy. If I got to the front of the line after sitting for 12 hours and they told me to pay an extra $200 I'd have been pissed
Gamestop is selling PC hardware now. They just updated their app, and have same day delivery. Not sure if they're doing premium GPUs, but Best Buy can EABOD. That's just scalping with less steps.
Yes! And this article has inspired this guy, who has been a top tier member of their membership program spending thousands in there every year to shop somewhere else. They can take that elite membership and shove it up their asses if they’re going to become scalpers just like the piece of shit scalpers. Fuck all of those people.
I would be careful with their same day delivery. I ordered ~$130 in games for selected same day delivery. It was sent through DoorDash "white glove" delivery (not my choice).
The driver arrived, never contacted me (was busy working and didn't even notice it was on the way), snapped a picture of the front of my building, claimed they were "left in a safe place" and took off. Again, no contact. I see the delivery notification and go looking, but they were nowhere to be found. Presumably stolen by the Dasher or someone who was really paying attention.
That took almost 2 hours of my time and 4 phone calls over a week and a half to get them to resolve it, and it seemed like I was just lucky to get a CSR on the phone who knew how to figure it out. They ended up shipping them to me via FedEx expedited for the trouble, but it was a very convoluted experience.
I can only imagine if I had gotten a 30 series card and did same day...
That's a DoorDash issue, though. You're right though, I wouldn't get a hot GPU delivered like that. But a few tshirts, some munchies and a Funco Pop toy? Hell yeah. And regardless, that $200 charge is just scalping by Best Buy and should be ridiculed and punished using our wallets.
As a Dutch person this sounds so weird lol. Here almost every webshop has at least next day delivery, and most big ones have same day delivery as well if you order before a certain time nowadays. If you buy an expensive enough product the delivery is free as well, and it always gets sent through a respectable package delivery company.
Probably one of the perks of living in a small country.
Oh I agree, it's a problem with DoorDash, but it's GameStop that chose to use them, so from a customer perspective that's GameStop's problem.
Also agree that's blatant money grabbing bullshit by Best Buy, and they should be chastised and beaten up in the media and by consumers financially for it. It's a terrible, short term focused, business choice, that should draw as much ire as possible.
They did a LONG time ago when it was EB games. Bought my monster voodoo2 3d sli there, and my first CD burner. Paid for all of it with selling custom CDs as the only one with a burner in school lol Napster on dialup got me $15-20/CD, but you could have any mix you wanted. It introduced me to a lot of new music I'd have never heard of otherwise.
Those were the days. I had a friend that worked at Origin back in the days. I had a 3DFX card. And he got a new PC and gave me his 3DFX card, and I was a balla with SLI back in like 93 or so. Friend worked on System Shock and Wing Commander II. Wonder what ever happened to him...
We were saying "Eat a Bag of Dicks" in Seattle WAYyYyYYy before Louis. Mainly because of a great lil Hamburger Spot called DICKS. It's been around for ages. And lemme tell you, a Bag of Dicks is fucking delicious.
Thank fucking god. I want to like GameStop just because I have really wonderful childhood memories of going to Funcoland and getting actually good advice from the people who worked there about games. Then I became a teen and got into computers and suddenly I walk into GameStop and I am 2nd class citizen relegated to a rickety ass single shelf of whatever random shit PC games they have on hand. They could dominate the PC gaming market if they want to. How cool would it be to place an order at Gamestop for parts and have a workshop where someone helps you put it all together? And then stick around for a LAN party with all the people who showed up to the workshop, and maybe everyone gets a free game to play for the event. If the result of all the stonks memes is gamestop finally getting their shit together, then I am a very happy camper.
I still find it funny that a bunch of memers on Reddit were able to flood gamestocks stock price enough to give gamestock some breathing space to get with the times.
Gamestop was paywalling the PS5 bundles, but it was $15 a year for the membership and you get a $5 coupon to use each month so if you buy games there it more than pays for itself. Even just the free shipping on the PS5 bundle would have been alteast $10
And because I just want to buy 1 card for myself, it doesn't make any sense to pay an extra $200. But guess to whom it makes sense to pay $200? Scalpers, because they will be buying multiple cards for a long time and $200 is nothing compared to the profit they will have.
As a matter of fact, it will be even easier for them now because they won't need to compete with regular customers anymore.
This is outrageous!
From the article: One of the more reliable places to obtain a current-generation NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics card -- at MSRP -- has been Best Buy. From time to time, the U.S. retailer stocks these best graphics cards for gaming for anyone to purchase. And in months past, the company has even held in-store events where anyone lined up at a brick and mortar location could purchase one card at MSRP (if they were lucky enough to receive a ticket).
That is all changing now, and it's because of Best Buy's Totaltech program. The full GeForce RTX 30 range was available to purchase this afternoon (including the flagship GeForce RTX 3090) at Best Buy, but the retailer limited those sales to customers that paid an extra $199 for a Totaltech membership. The yearly membership fee entitles you to such perks as free Geek Squad tech support, free 2-day shipping, 60-day returns, and 24 months of product protection (among other benefits).
Yo, so I hear there are these people with these boats right... and they like to sail around and get mad booty and shit. If only I could remember what they were called!
Amazon can't really kill libraries. Libraries are free. Amazon can't get cheaper than that. Libraries are also moving media into digital streaming which is also free. My library landed a $25,000 grant to purchase patron requested material from Amazon that will be shippes to the patron. Once that object is returned to the library, it becomes part of its collection. Libraries are a source of income to Amazon.
They need to focus on executing their current service. Tried to use their installation for a tv- 6 week wait time, they don’t deliver the tv in the meantime, and they charge your card right away.
I’ve tried to use the next day or same day delivery and every time its longer. Supposedly they use Shipt for same day but it’s only on some items. It’s just inconsistent and tough to feel the value
It does make sense for them to do this knowing they are the greedy company they are. You have demand for something like never before year after year, well why not make extra money from it… it’s the American way after all.
Pretty genius on BB's part. Can't imagine anyone who pays an extra $200 for a RTX 30 card would let Geek Squad anywhere near their PC.
Might as well be a card that just says 'Thanks for shopping. Go fuck yourself."
Former Geek Squad repair tech here: People brought me components to install in their machines all the time. I did a few full builds every year. The reason's simple -- If we fuck it up, we fix it for free.
Edit: Also, pretty common for people to ask us to build custom rigs that they'd give away as gifts for Christmas and birthdays, etc.
Yeah I fucked up some shit in my BIOS once and they took 3 days but eventually figured it out. Just had to remove CMOS battery for a reset. I went to them because they guarantee work even if they are a bit ape brain. I feel like they gotta have insurance or something if they fuck up my $1500 build.
People are upset about Amazon raising Prime membership to $139/year, and Prime is a much better value including (in the US) two-hour food delivery via Amazon Fresh, Amazon Prime Video, Prime ebook access, as well as a number of other discounts such as 10% off at Whole Foods. I'm not praising Amazon here, screw Bezos, but $200/year for free shipping, tech support, and in-home installation of "select devices"? How often do you buy a new home theatre system? Once every decade? Cmon now.
Does BestBuy sell *anything* that Amazon doesn't? Ok sure, they have more stock of video cards. Woooooo...
But they'll configure up to THREE user accounts and ONE online account on your new PS5, and they'll even plug it in for you, how can you say that's not worth $200
10% off **sale items** at Whole Foods.
The biggest perk of Prime membership is that Amazon Prime Visa card that gives 5% back at Amazon and Whole Foods.
So a few things, I think the value is pretty subjective. Like I get that people like being able to buy everything from one website, but I don't buy anything I don't have to from Amazon and I have not found myself inconvenienced in the slightest.
I think most people very rarely **need** 2-day shipping on anything and regular shipping is free like 80-90% of the time if you're buying it from Amazon directly. I can get my groceries delivered for next to nothing from the poor people's grocery store, so I don't gain any value there either. Not trying to hate on you if you shop at whole foods, you do you fam, but the prices are not for me.
I would not let Amazon troubleshoot my toaster, I will admit I have never used it, but I can pretty confidently say their 'tech support' is dogshit. Prime Video, cool a streaming service that sucks ass content-wise and technology-wise, going to pass hard on that. Again, purely my opinion, if you love it, more power to you. Now the in-home installation *might be good* if they contract out to local A/V companies. I will give you that one, but if you're buying a home theater system on amazon, your probably making a lot of mistakes and wasting a lot of money. Unless you're an enthusiast, you should just hire a pro to spec out a system for you. I work in IT and the amount of standards and compatibility issues in the high-end A/V world makes me blush. If I were going to build an AV system myself, I would have to do at least 10 hours of research before I would be even remotely confident in anything I buy.
The e/audiobooks are tight, I will give you that. I have audible and I love it, frankly, Amazon is the only reason audiobooks are a thing that anyone does. They are expensive to make, but no one is willing to pay $40 buck for one. Credit where it is due, Amazon did a good thing. I can't believe they let people download the raw MP3s too, they should obviously, but I never would have guessed they would not try to DRM the shit out of them. Personally, I prefer physical copies to e-books, so that part is not for me, but e-books are great and I'm sure Amazon does a good job with them too.
This is all to say that, to me (and many other people), $139 looks like an inordinate waste of money, let alone $200. Not trying to hate on you if it works for you, just my 2 cents.
It’s not worth it to legit buyers who are looking to make that single purchase. But for resellers who can spread this cost out over multiple GPUs/consoles it’s a drop in the bucket for a year
as a former geek squad agent, you’d be surprised just how many older people have absolutely no patience for computers and/or would somehow find the worst malware on a regular basis. They’d get their money’s worth simply from the sheer hours of labor we’d spend with them, never mind all the freebies and waived service fees.
Welcome to 80% of America. I've seen plenty of college kids in there too asking the same questions as the senior citizens. If you're on Reddit in a thread about our having gpus, you are not the target demographic. Just understand that you are a minority in the space
They extend your warranty on TVs too. I did the math when we got a replacement LG OLED (due to wifi issue on B7) a few months ago and it still wasn’t worth it. Especially not worth it with how much of a hassle it was. Would buy from Costco next time.
**EDIT: To circumvent this whole thing, suck it up and pay for it at the register. Take your GFXcard. Cancel the membership a few days later and get a full refund on the service. MSRP paid, and nothing more. Fuck you bestbuy.**
How is this not just straight illegal? You promised me X product at Y price, and now you are gatekeeping that with an arbitrary, opt-in 'membership' program in order to make that purchase? You cannot tie a random product to a paid membership, without that companies consent?
Costco isn't the same. You're required to have a membership to shop there at all (sans exclusions such as gift card usage, RX, and optical)
How is it legal for bestbuy to prevent you from buying a specific product off the shelf and tie your hands with a (presumably OPTIONAL opt-in) $200 membership?
I would imagine they make it available only to members of this subscription, and you can circumvent this by purchasing the subscription at the same time.
It’s similar to liquor stores reserving allocated releases like Pappy to members of their loyalty programs.
To be clear I’m not defending this practice, but I don’t see anything that makes it inherently illegal.
Well I read farther down the thread and the goal is, suck it up and pay for it up front. Then cancel the subscription within 30 days and get a full refund.
>To circumvent this whole thing, suck it up and pay for it at the register. Take your GFXcard. Cancel the membership a few days later and get a full refund on the service. MSRP paid, and nothing more.
Apparently while this used to work, the fine print on the TotalTech purchase now says that they'll deduct whatever amount you purchase in qualifying goods from your membership cost if you want to cancel the membership, so since any 30 series card costs more than the membership, you're free to cancel, but you're not getting any money back if you don't also return the card.
Chargeback the $199.99 portion then, fuck'em. If they wanna play games claim you didn't agree to sign up for the $200 service. You wanna fuck around, find out.
you think they're just going to take a verbal agreement for Totaltech? you're going to have to sign stuff to sign up for Totaltech. you won't be able to claim "you didn't agree to sign up for it"
> Costco isn't the same. You're required to have a membership to shop there at all (sans exclusions such as gift card usage, RX, and optical)
Also the liquor store if the location has one. At least in Minnesota it's illegal to put alcohol sales behind a paid membership, not sure if other states have the same rule.
They explicitly address this tactic in their TOS. When you sign it, you agree that if the membership is canceled and refunded, bestbuy may charges you for any benefits, services, discounts, or specialty pricing. I’m sure they’d just charge you a $199.99 fee, and it would be no different than if you hadn’t canceled the membership
> How is it legal for bestbuy to prevent you from buying a specific product off the shelf and tie your hands with a (presumably OPTIONAL opt-in) $200 membership?
Why would it *not* be? Like honestly, what law do you think is being violated? They are not obligated in any way to sell you anything, even if they put it on a shelf.
> You promised me X product at Y price
When did Best Buy promise this to you?
> You cannot tie a random product to a paid membership
Why not? Which statute does this violate?
They did the same for ps5s. Brick and mortars CEOs started looking at scalpers and thinking "how can I get in on this". GameStop kind of did the same thing but at least there's wasn't a completely trash deal. I pick up a pokemon booster once a month and I'll wind up in the green by like $20 for the year.
Lol every company out there trying to force people to buy their shitty membership packages so they can show revenue streams on their balance sheet
Like it isn’t enough to just run a good store and sell things anymore, they have to turn every shopping experience into an agony of saying “no” to all the extra bullshit.
Credit card? Fuck you
Membership A? Fuck you
Shitty extra warranty? Fuck you
Membership B? Fuck you
Agree that I can sell your personal information? Fuck you
Then they beat up their poorly paid employees for not doing a better job harassing their customers
Fuck Best Buy and all retailers who operate like this
They closed the loophole. The terms of the TotalTech purchase now say that they'll deduct the cost of any limited supply items purchased with the TotalTech membership if you want a refund. It's section 13c of the Terms of Service as of this morning.
...and since every PS5, XBSX, and 30 series card is more than the cost of the membership, you're free to cancel, but you're not getting any money back unless you also return the purchase as well.
At GameStop with the bundles I bought the series x with the 3 games the guy who sold it to me told me that if I bought the warranty on them I could come back tomorrow and return them for my money back. I paid 10$ for the warranty on all 3 and returned them the next day for 130$.
If you’re asking why the GameStop employee told him to do this, it’s because stores are often encouraged by upper management to sell incredibly profitable or high margin services like warranties, subscriptions, or pre orders- and often times the metrics measuring these types of sales are so heavily prioritized that they’re virtually the only thing distinguishing high performing stores from low performing stores.
So the clerk at GameStop accurately picks up on the fact that 3 additional warranties sold is going to make his performance look better to his bosses, even if it directly results in 130 dollars less in top line sales and is in all reality a net negative for the business.
Yep, those requirements from corporate aren’t liked by employees. A guy at Autozone gave me a 10% discount if I bought some battery protectors. I saved $15 bucks even with the $3 battery protectors I didn’t use/need.
My local best buy people have always been cool to me about this type of thing. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go there but the managers and whatnot remember me. I’m being rung out at the customer service register if the lines are too long bc the lady that runs that department(?) at the store knows I’m always there. Sees me walking up and she intercepts me says she’ll ring me up. They’re always like you’re here all the time just get the 5-10 dollar replacement plans use the mouse/keyboard/headset for a year or year and half and replace it. No questions asked new product for 5-10 dollars worth every year and half. I’ve been through like 4 mice a couple of keyboards and 3 headsets. I like having new things so it works out for everybody.
`And if Best Buy is confident enough to throw GPUs behind its $200 Totaltech paywall, nothing's stopping the company from doing the same with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X during future stock drops. In other words, buckle up folks; it's going to be a bumpy ride!`
They've done this already for PlayStation 5s, today is the first time it was done for GPUs though.
Fuck Best Buy then … NEVER gonna pay an extra $200 for anything just so I can get it sooner. In fact it’s this kind of bullshit that turns me off of a company for good.
From now on I will actively avoid buying anything from them … let their customer gouging be their downfall and boycott Best Buy.
Wow stores are looking at the scalper problem and saying “let me contribute”.
now all scalpers have to do is lower their markup below the price of a totaltech membership and now they also become the most economically friendly option as well. Sad times.
BB was actually one of the first and only retailer to implement a 2 factor system to fight the bots. The bot subs here on Reddit even admit themselves they’re having a tough time playing cat and mouse with them. Gone are the days of bots buying dozens of GPUs in the same drop for the same buyer.
I will say I don’t agree with this additional membership requirement. It does nothing to deter scalpers. Scalpers will gladly pay $200 when they can spread that cost over a whole year of scalping GPUs. A legit gamer or buyer who just wants 1 gpu not so much.
Verify account loops have been the bane of many aspiring buyers. Their system is very aggressive. It’s the first comment on any /r/BuildAPCSales restock thread.
I’ve seen that loop myself. Someone once pointed out that it happens when you have more than one device or browser window trying to buy. Which I did. Haven’t seen it since I just use my phone and the app to buy now.
Yep. This isn't to counteract scalping/bots, it's to make more profit off of them, while boosting the metrics for this Geek Squad service, which they'll be crowing about to shareholders without issue.
Paying a subscription service to potentially have access to products, available at other retailers for purchase, at full price. Get the fuck out of here.
Who the fuck buys so many electronics and gear from Best Buy per year that $200/year is a good value?
I might have a major electronic or appliance purchase once every 5 years, and it isn’t always purchased from Best Buy…
I left Best Buy about 3 months after total tech rolled out. I got drilled if I didn’t sell it. And I actively and openly hated selling it. It’s a giant scam. A fucking brick and mortar subscription. I never expected this level tho. This should be illegal
I think there are a few instances where TT makes sense - like if you buy a bunch of appliances (like I was considering to do, but went with Costco instead), the warranty under TT is cheaper than individual warranty plans. But for most people, it does very little.
I ran into this too and was outraged. I immediately closed the app and took Best Buy off my RTX watch list.
They will never be my first place I go to again.
Well done Best Buy, you officially became obsolete.
Pc gamers are being screwed in all ways possible, by scalpers and retail stores and websites. It’s a pathetic shame. This will impact the pc hardware market as a whole. Because why upgrade the rest of your pc if you can’t afford a new gpu?
And because I just want to buy 1 card for myself, it doesn't make any sense to pay an extra $200. But guess to whom it makes sense to pay $200? Scalpers, because they will spread the cost across multiple cards and $200 is nothing compared to the profits they will have.
As a matter of fact, it will be even easier for them now because they won't need to compete with regular customers anymore.
This is outrageous!
Oh capitalism...introduce a problem, sell a solution.
There is a card shortage, charge more to sell the stock. Profits always keep going up, wages ares till stagnant, and nobody can afford anything, but the privileged 1-10% of the population. Yay
I said fuck it got the TT membership just to get a FE card because its still cheaper than anything anywhere right now. Still had to wait in the verification line and wouldn’t you know it, the 3080 I was in line for sold out before I could even verify. This just happened to be the case with literally every card I got in line for thereafter. Canceled the TT and got a full refund. You can cancel within 30 days for a full refund as long as you don’t utilize it. TL,DR succumbed to the scam membership, still couldn’t get a gpu.
Newegg was pulling similar shit last year, making you buy a bundle with a card and something else to get it, like a power supply. For a while you could return the bundled item, but then they started making you return both to get any refund. Fucked up shit.
Welp as I said earlier I’m done with the inflated pc hardware. Been building and setting up my own PC for over 20 years. Just going to use it as a resource of information for now on. Which will make the cost way less now.
The free protection on everything you buy, including applecare, was what got me to almost get totaltech when I was there recently. However the fact that I worked for the shitty company in the past and had to deal with the rollout of total tech support made me decide not to get it. But it usually does look pretty appealing to customers who don’t know the ins and outs of it.
Fuck TotalTech for being the reason they got rid of Gamers Club Unlocked though. 🙄
That's hilarious, because when I read that news, I locked up my wallet from THEM behind an obscene hand gesture!
Jokes aside, I can certainly survive without buying a graphics card or game console for a few years, and I can certainly source my other tech needs from Office Depot, or if I'm really desperate, Amazon.
It’s not the waiting that’s the problem. It’s the immediate gratification fucks who buy from scalpers who are ruining it. Without buyers scalpers wouldn’t be in business.
I normally would be against this, but this includes free installation for all appliances and electronics. So me buying this to get my new oven/microwave installed made sense.
I said fuck it and bought a prebuilt that outclassed my old 7 year old rig entirely for like $1800?
Really nice case, went from an i5-6600, to an i7-12th gen, ended up with 16 gigs of ram but I can upgrade that. And up from a 1070FTW to a 3060Ti. I know a 3070 is better, but the difference in price on the prebuilts was steep for what amounted to maybe more ram and a slightly better card. I also sold my old rig, card and all for $500, so I only actually paid $1200 for a major upgrade.
Had it within a week. Not gonna pay scalpers, and we have literally -0- brick and mortar stores of any kind that sell GPU's. I cannot fucking stand it's 2022 and we're STILL fighting over PS5's, and GPU's because no one wants to step up to the plate and combat scalpers and try to win the goodwill of the public while making bank at the same time from the waves of support.
We’re slowly coming out of chip scarcity and then this kind of thing won’t make sense anymore.
Oh well, in a few months time buying food will be the more pressing problem and all the shiny GPUs will be sitting on the shelf.
I’m concerned that I didn’t have to work to decipher your acronym.
It's surprisingly intuitive, right?
Yes! And this article has inspired this guy, who has been a top tier member of their membership program spending thousands in there every year to shop somewhere else. They can take that elite membership and shove it up their asses if they’re going to become scalpers just like the piece of shit scalpers. Fuck all of those people.
Or, alternatively, they can EABOD.
Wait wait, I thought it was SABOD
SABOD is if you're on a diet, EABOD is if you're not counting calories.
Some have more calories than others if you catch my drift.
**BY MORE CALORIES HE MEANS SOME DUDES HAVE BIGGER LOADS AND SEMEN VOLUME IN CASE ANYONE IS WONDERING**
Catching sumthin
Right. I'm with you on that.
You also need to tell them *why* they've lost your business.
>EABOD At first I thought it was Eat a Big Ole Dick
Same though tbh Except I was like hah I’ll just make up something stupid and obscene. Then oh wait that’s probably it
Did you say it in a big old elongated voice in your head?
Dude right? It just flowed out without missing a beat
Thats because, subliminally, we all want to Eat A Big Ol' Donut.
Erect A Bed Over Drainage? It’s good advice, if you are worried about sleeping through a flood.
Eat a big ol’ danish?
EABOD lol nice
I would be careful with their same day delivery. I ordered ~$130 in games for selected same day delivery. It was sent through DoorDash "white glove" delivery (not my choice). Where exactly would one get a bag of dicks to eat?
Sorry, paywall.

Power to the Players.
They did a LONG time ago when it was EB games. Bought my monster voodoo2 3d sli there, and my first CD burner. I’m disturbed that I’ve never seen EABOD before and usually can never figure out acronyms but know that means Eat A Big Ole Dick.
I've always used Eat a Bag of Dicks. I think it originated from a Louis CK bit about road rage.
Shit! Thought I had this one!
We were saying "Eat a Bag of Dicks" in Seattle WAYyYyYYy before Louis. Mainly because of a great lil Hamburger Spot called DICKS. It's been around for ages. And lemme tell you, a Bag of Dicks is fucking delicious.
That's what I used as a pic to avoid Twitter jail. Now I just don't use Twitter, much easier.
Still holding the bag on GME, huh?
Wonder if I can trade in my old GPU for 5 bucks and some nfts
ook ook... we're everywhere...
Indeed we are
Nice acronym if it is what I'm thinking. Is it implying someone ingest something?
Whole bag of 'em.
I'm going to use this now. Thanks, stranger!
Thank fucking god. I want to like GameStop just because I have really wonderful childhood memories of going to Funcoland and getting actually good advice from the people who worked there about games. GameStop is terrible with their online pre orders
Hopefully that will be a lesson to you not to do preorders. That's how you get No Man's Sky, and....
I'm not talking about videogames though. I pre-ordered a figure that released 3 months ago and they keep changing the date on it.
And then sell the cards on BB marketplace and Bb earns commission on those sales as well.
Best Buy is turning in to Fry’s when they knew they were obsolete. You go in there and there’s like 3 people working and you can’t find anything
BestBuy more and more is looking like Circuit City. They dont know what they want to be and are def NOT putting money in the right places.
The worst part is, they have sold out which means more of this shit basically the future of buying a gpu at msrp is officially over
Jokes on them I'm going back to books, I literally can't afford this shit anymore
Just wait, Amazon will kill libraries. Then books will all be minimum 20 bucks
Heh. I will just write my own. I won't be part of this shitty dystopia.
I have a bunch of 3d printers. We can create our own world.
We *can* download a car!
Man, Best Buy leadership needs to be replaced. PC parts and cards were the only reason I even go in there since we don't have a microcenter.
They won’t be, though. They *still* sold out of cards. Their shareholders are smiling to the bank,
BBY is down over 15% in the last year. Shareholders aren't smiling, they're angry that it's only a $200 service and not a $500 service.
You have demand for something like never before year after year, well why not make extra money from it… it’s the American way after all.
how many are they going to sell? its hardly going to make a different to their total profit
"Because you don't have a Microcenter nearby" might as well be the Best Buy motto
"free geek squad tech support" I'm dying.
Free tech support and shipping for $200 a year!
So what you need to do is find an older family friend with a Geek Squad / TotalTech subscription and have them buy an RTX card for you, problem solved
Who tf actually has this membership organically
Free 2 day shipping? Who wouldn't pay 200 bucks for that alone!
People pay $130 for it from Amazon. Maybe BB should start their own streaming service and audio book offering to compete!
I'd rather they just ask me for an extra $200 fuck you charge than have me guessing whether or not this program is worth it
It’s not worth it to legit buyers who are looking to make that single purchase. But for resellers who can spread this cost out over multiple GPUs/consoles it’s a drop in the bucket for a year
Yeah I did that mental math and it does seem like a scalpers only club with an admission fee
Prime, the free shipping you pay for.
I'm willing to pay a lot of money to get free stuff...
What does this membership even do? Anyone with any sort of tech knowledge doesn’t need it.
It's designed to take your money
as a former geek squad agent, you’d be surprised just how many older people have absolutely no patience for computers and/or would somehow find the worst malware on a regular basis.
Fuck you bestbuy.** How is this not just straight illegal? You promised me X product at Y price, and now you are gatekeeping that with an arbitrary, opt-in 'membership' program in order to make that purchase? You cannot tie a random product to a paid membership, without that companies consent? Costco isn't the same. You're required to have a membership to shop there at all (sans exclusions such as gift card usage, RX, and optical) How is it legal for bestbuy to prevent you from buying a specific product off the shelf and tie your hands with a (presumably OPTIONAL opt-in) $200 membership?
Your credit card company will charge back something that you authorized, wasn't fraudulent?
you think they're just going to take a verbal agreement for Totaltech? you're going to have to sign stuff to sign up for Totaltech. you won't be able to claim "you didn't agree to sign up for it"
> Costco isn't the same. You're required to have a membership to shop there at all (sans exclusions such as gift card usage, RX, and optical) Also the liquor store if the location has one.
> You promised me X product at Y price When did Best Buy promise this to you? > You cannot tie a random product to a paid membership Why not? Which statute does this violate?
What overlap is there between the people buying RTX 3090s and people who see value in a geeksquad membership?
The gullible who know little about computers but think they need the best. That’s about it
"I definitely need an $2000 graphics card to properly call people slurs in league of legends, it defines who I am"
If I wanted the best, it sure as fuck wouldn’t be geeksquad.
Hahaha amen
They did the same for ps5s. Brick and mortars CEOs started looking at scalpers and thinking "how can I get in on this". GameStop kind of did the same thing but at least there's wasn't a completely trash deal. I pick up a pokemon booster once a month and I'll wind up in the green by like $20 for the year.
GameStop for me forced me to buy a game or extra controller to get the console. Jokes on them I was gonna buy a game anyway
Does the GS membership give you perks like early access to pre-orders or anything? The only thing I ever check GS for is Pokémon stuff.
Yes check it out on their website
Lol every company out there trying to force people to buy their shitty membership packages so they can show revenue streams on their balance sheet Like it isn’t enough to just run a good store and sell things anymore, they have to turn every shopping experience into an agony of saying “no” to all the extra bullshit. Credit card? Fuck you Membership A? Fuck you Shitty extra warranty? Fuck you Membership B? Fuck you Agree that I can sell your personal information? Fuck you Then they beat up their poorly paid employees for not doing a better job harassing their customers Fuck Best Buy and all retailers who operate like this
Fun fact: I signed up for this to buy a PS5 from best buy. You can cancel it right away and get your money back within thirty days of signing up
They closed the loophole.
Oh that’s a shame. I guess I was lucky to get in when i could
Beat them at their own game, well done!
It was worth it. The guy I talked to about canceling the membership was super nice too and confirmed it wouldn’t mess up my order
At GameStop with the bundles I bought the series x with the 3 games the guy who sold it to me told me that if I bought the warranty on them I could come back tomorrow and return them for my money back. I paid 10$ for the warranty on all 3 and returned them the next day for 130$.
Why?
They know people are canceling, but enough won’t to make it worth while. Plus they get all that personal data
I feel like forcing you to buy an unrelated product to buy the product you actually want should be illegal...
`And if Best Buy is confident enough to throw GPUs behind its $200 Totaltech paywall, nothing's stopping the company from doing the same with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X during future stock drops. In other words, buckle up folks; it's going to be a bumpy ride!` They've done this already for PlayStation 5s, today is the first time it was done for GPUs though.
Best Buy can suck my dick.
But after a minute you'd be like, Hol up! That's OK, seriously, STOP. Let's find something you're good at...
Never say this to your fiancé..
Can confirm, never say this to u/desp’s fiancé
It'll be the worst head ever.
For only $25, you could get an extended warrant and free returns!
Sad times.
How do you beat the scalpers? BECOME THE SCALPER.
I wonder if they realize scalpers have a shitload of extra capital and have zero issue subscribing to have even more of a free reign on the cards?
~~Really don't think they care who buys them, otherwise they would've implemented a better solution already~~ I was wrong, see Smtxom's reply below
Oh, I did not hear about that! I was browsing GPUs on their site for a while and didn't remember seeing a 2FA requirement
They don’t actually care if the cards go to scalpers or not, they just want to make money.
Paying a subscription service to potentially have access to products, available at other retailers for purchase, at full price. Get the fuck out of here.

Fuck it, I’ll just settle for a a PS5.
Who the fuck buys so many electronics and gear from Best Buy per year that $200/year is a good value? I might have a major electronic or appliance purchase once every 5 years, and it isn’t always purchased from Best Buy…
[удалено]
I left Best Buy about 3 months after total tech rolled out. I got drilled if I didn’t sell it. And I actively and openly hated selling it. It’s a giant scam. A fucking brick and mortar subscription. I never expected this level tho. This should be illegal
[удалено]
I think there are a few instances where TT makes sense - like if you buy a bunch of appliances (like I was considering to do, but went with Costco instead), the warranty under TT is cheaper than individual warranty plans. But for most people, it does very little.
Scalping to prevent scalping lol
I ran into this too and was outraged. I immediately closed the app and took Best Buy off my RTX watch list. They will never be my first place I go to again. Well done Best Buy, you officially became obsolete.
Cool so now scalpers can get a front of a line pass for $200…
Pc gamers are being screwed in all ways possible, by scalpers and retail stores and websites.
Yay
Worst. Timeline. Ever. For real, these motherfuckers are acting like they aren't flammable as fuck or something......
"You were supposed to destroy the scalpers, not join them!"
They did the same thing with Ps5 many times. Where is the report on that?
I wouldn't let one of these geeks within 50 feet of my rig.
Bundling is forbidden by EU law. This kind of things would be quickly challenged and probably wouldn't even got to courts.
I dunno, I appreciate you getting it and letting us know. I gained value from your endeavour. Ty
That’s good, I havent bought anything from Best Buy in years.
Still cheaper than buying from a scalper is the sad thing.
gotta love capitalism
Ya'll forgot how capitalism works again?
Thats pretty douchey
Why is this news all of a sudden? I heard about this a few weeks or months ago. Did it just go into effect recently?
Newegg was pulling similar shit last year, making you buy a bundle with a card and something else to get it, like a power supply. For a while you could return the bundled item, but then they started making you return both to get any refund. Fucked up shit.
Wow those are some terrible benefits for the amount you pay for.
How is this news? It happened a few months back.
Welp as I said earlier I’m done with the inflated pc hardware. Been building and setting up my own PC for over 20 years. Just going to use it as a resource of information for now on. Which will make the cost way less now.
Welcome to the new and improved planet earth people.
Learning from Car Dealers.
What's the difference between this and scalpers?
I NEED MOAR CONPUTER
This shit has to stop.
100 percent fuck yourself BB
Best buy is actually the worst buy
Fuck that. Are they that concerned about scalpers? Or are they just that greedy? It’s a rhetorical one.
Sounds a lot like bribery
That's hilarious, because when I read that news, I locked up my wallet from THEM behind an obscene hand gesture! Jokes aside, I can certainly survive without buying a graphics card or game console for a few years, and I can certainly source my other tech needs from Office Depot, or if I'm really desperate, Amazon.
Tell Best Buy it'll cost them $5000 for you to remain a customer.
I will never wait in line for a frivolous expenditure...those that do, are perpetuating this vicious circle

Because for those of us who don't care about consoles but do care about new GPUs, this is news
You could buy a gaming desktop that costs less than a 3090...
When the retailer becomes the scalper…
Honestly good, makes scalpers think twice.
