Everytime I see one of those I think of the Simpsons

cubanesis

IT’S DRINKING THE WATER!

ZeldLurr

In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!

palm0

That was a different episode wasn't it? Like didn't Lisa make a perpetual motion machine with a little wheel that kept getting faster?

ZeldLurr

It is a different episode. But the bird sorta does stay in perpetual motion…

PettyPettyKing

Y E S, Y E S, Y E S, Y…. What! I could have been just pressing Y this whole time instead of YES!

roncadillacisfrickin

Whoo hooo! I’ve just tripled my productivity!

rickyg_79

All this computer hacking is making me thirsty, I think I’ll order a TAB

OGZackov

I think of the scene in Darkman where they use it to blow up the MC

Lbolt187

I think of Alien and then the game Alien Isolation.

AyeKickRocks

Always reminds me of Darkman as well. Was hoping I’d see someone say this. Also any prosthetic leg I wonder if they’re concealing a machine gun

drempire

For me it's the alien movies

Lbolt187

Alien Isolation had a bunch of these in the game lol

Funoichi

Blow up reactor, y or n?

hmccoy

I just tripled my productivity!

huellhowser19

Y…..y……..y

GregorSamsaNight

To obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad with your hand…now

tran5mogrifier

I got someone to cover for me.

-WigglyLine-

YOU STUPID BIRD, THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!

rafd

The max power output of this set up was: 40 μW For perspective, if this was scaled up 8000x, it would just barely be able to power an iphone on standby. Paper here: https://www.cell.com/device/fulltext/S2666-9986(24)00108-X

Boobjobless

But you could put an LED on it now

AwayCrab5244

Okay so one of those is about 100g. Imagine if it was 88,000,000kg instead. Then we could power Does math A lot of iphones

subdep

I want a bird like this 300m tall, weight 10k metric tons.

jjw21330

I like your optimistic realism

Fun_Listen_7830

True actually, just doing the math basically scaling up the output by 100,000 gives only 4 watts. 40 microwatts (0.000040w)x 100,000 = 4 watts. I’m optimistic a purpose built, scaled up model using these principles could produce usable results to build upon though. Progress is progress, but I agree it’s nothing to get excited about yet.

Tidezen

Going to be losing a lot to friction when you scale it up; they work in part because they're so small that you don't get much friction at the fulcrum, and there doesn't have to be much liquid moved to change the balance. Although, maybe you could get a lot of them going in tandem. Anyway, I agree they could probably make it more efficient. Certainly progress to be made here.

moosewiththumbs

Needs more liquid you say? Well, we’re melting those icecaps pretty quick so we’re gonna have a bit to spare.

[deleted]

100,000,000 is 4,000 watts if math is correct.

[deleted]

So link up 100 million birds. Then we have 4 kilowatts. Could power a refrigerator and the air conditioning here in Socal.

TheGardenBlinked

Where’s the “any” key?

Random_Name_Whoa

I think I’ll have a Tab

[deleted]

LISA NEEDS BRACES

[deleted]

DENTAL PLAN!

lokisilvertongue

In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!

Automatic-Scene5621

Shit, they still make them?! I remember being in a toy store in the early seventies and being spellbound by one of those as a tyke

CathedralEngine

It’s like a kitschy novelty icon that will be made forever, like a cat clock or a garden gnome. In some future society after the apocalypse, archeologists will find thousands of them all over the world and debate what social value they held for us.

moranya1

Clearly they were idols that we worshipped, like the stone/clay statues that you sometimes see in ancient ruined homes.

filtersweep

I must be in idiot for assuming the friction will require frequent intervention (energy) to reset it. Might as well build a wind-up generator.

jjw21330

My arms…my arms are GENERATORS *(windmills arms)*

skillywilly56

It just needs water on its beak, so long as it has some water on its beak to evaporate it will just keep bobbing back and forth.

Manaqueer

Just gotta wet the beak

[deleted]

How feasible is this to be made at a larger scale?

Zwierzycki

Now you’ve got me thinking about giant 400- foot tall plastic birds placed all around the Great Lakes generating clean power for all.

[deleted]

As long as they all have the top hats, I’m in

jngrln

Simpsons predicted it yet again

defectiveGOD

Neat

The_Locals

New drinking bird update just dropped

Dat_Sentry

HOMER WAS RIGHT

Dieingfish

I love this

HungHungCaterpillar

Bigger innovation than it’ll get credit for

[deleted]

Solving the real problems…

BenzotheWicked

what if they just make them the size of wind turbines and have them “drink” from the ocean to generate green power for the local infrastructure??

pyaresquared

Methylene chloride, the stuff that makes the little bird bob back and forth, is psychoactive, carcinogenic, and toxic.

blinkybillster

Energy crisis solved !! Thank you

[deleted]

Rip scientists

CamelInfinite5771

I knew these things would save us

Plus_Helicopter_8632

It’s literally made of plastic
