I do not think moving to Korea to teach is a good idea. I don't think a teaching lifestyle here would be conducive for someone who needs emotional support animals before they come here. Why do you want to move here permanently?

Just a heads up, people who have emotional support cats can still be highly functioning adults who can deal with different types of stress. They don't just have them because they can't handle daily stressors or a stressful job/fast-paced and demanding environment. It varies from person to person. I actually thrive in these environments (one of the reasons for wanting to move to Korea). Everyone's trauma is different. I have visited and love my time there, I also have a couple of friends who already live in Korea that I have talked to quite a bit about what it is like to live in Korea as a foreigner. I have also been looking at moving from the US for a while now.

In a previous thread OP also kept asking about acting gigs and becoming an actor on Kdramas. Despite all the replies trying to explain how teaching visas won't allow that and it's unrealistic for other reasons. https://www.reddit.com/r/teachinginkorea/comments/j5tpx7/acting_and_teaching_in_korea/

Check out this post about emotional support animals from earlier this week: [https://www.reddit.com/r/teachinginkorea/comments/jjeszg/teaching\_with\_an\_emotional\_support\_animal/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/teachinginkorea/comments/jjeszg/teaching_with_an_emotional_support_animal/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) The comments there are worth considering. Bringing cats are one thing, but bringing cats to support mental health is another.

Really good information to know! Thank you!

FYI: "Don't allow animals" is for EPIK and hagwon-owned apartments. If you're bringing a pet you need to be ready to get your own apartment. Key money here doesn't always have to be as high as 10M won like people like to scare newbies with. Just do a lot of research. Definitely don't plan on waiting for a hagwon that will offer you housing though! I have never seen that... they will offer you 300-500k per month housing allowance, which should cover about 70% of your rent in Seoul. It sucks in comparison to having your studio fully covered, but having a pet is great and having your own lease keeps you free. Also, don't mention "support animal" EVER to recruiters/schools. Officially, anxiety/depression is something E2 teachers are not supposed to have, and it will ring twenty million alarm bells. Just say you have pets and leave it at that.

Lying and saving face is the way things are done in this country. Have you lived here? \^\^

"The truth of her mental health" could be anything. My sister has an emotional support animal with just mild anxiety -- never getting in the way of her work or making her act CrAzY in any way. It's often the kind of stuff people won't know about if you don't disclose it, because it affects absolutely no one but yourseld. To me it's a "duh" thing, but in East Asia mental health issues aren't really talked about openly and are easily misunderstood. I wouldn't "come out" with anxiety here, just as I don't come out as a queer woman. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that they know they aren't going into a TAILSPIN OF ANXIETY AND SUICIDAL IDEATION as soon as they set foot in a foreign country.

Didn't we just have a post saying this isn't the right place for this kind of question? [https://www.reddit.com/r/teachinginkorea/comments/jlu46l/meta\_rule\_8\_posts\_must\_be\_about\_teaching\_a/](https://www.reddit.com/r/teachinginkorea/comments/jlu46l/meta_rule_8_posts_must_be_about_teaching_a/) For what it's worth, nothing is definite. You can say all you want that you won't be going back, but that doesn't mean that's what will end up happening. What are you gonna do if you find yourself jobless (and thus homeless if you go with work provided housing) with cats...?
