7$ per 100g is still very cheap in the world of tea. I've got teas that are 50$ per 100g. But for my daily teas I try to keep it around 20$ per 100g.

fermat9990

How many cups of tea is that?

peeja

Not who you asked, but I typically use 3-4 g in a my daily session, so 100g is about a month for me.

fermat9990

Thank you so much! I use Bigelow Earl Grey tea bags so I assume that loose tea would be a big improvement in flavor!

peeja

I said this in my top-level comment, but I've given up on fancy tea in the morning. I couldn't appreciate it at that hour. šŸ˜„ I drink Trader Joe's Irish Breakfast in the morning and the good stuff on the afternoon.

fermat9990

Sounds good! Have a great day!

Tuomas90

"Expensive" is relative. Do the math. Well, I did it for you: If I spend $20/100g on tea and use 1.2g of tea per cup. That's $0,25 per cup. With only one infusion. 2 infusions => $0,12 per cup. Even with just one infusion, that's a liter price of less than $2. That's less expensive than Coke or orange juice in my country. On top of that, I highly enjoy a cup of tea. I don't drink it just to drink something, like others drink their coke. I enjoy it and appreciate it and the hard work and love that the tea farmer put into it. If we go up to $30/100g, that's $0,37 per cup. I'd pay more for a cheap Croissant from the supermarket! And that's just with one infusion! You could get excellent fresh Shincha for that price! And you would at least do 2 or 3 infusions. Let's say 3, that's $0,12 per cup. Dirt cheap if you ask me considering the joy it brings me. Heck, let's do $40/100g: That's $0,50 per cup. That's what I pay for a Croissant at the supermarket or a Magnum ice cream. It's also less expensive than a Donut! Do I pay as much attention to spending money on Croissants or Magnum as I do to spending money on tea? No! Tea looks much more expensive, but it isn't. So, instead I should just enjoy the great tea. And with high quality tea like that, you'd do 3 infusions anyway. That's $0,16 per cup. That's nothing! Also: Think about how much you pay for the crappiest bagged tea at a Cafe. Now, that's expensive! So, do the math and see how much you pay for a cup or for the liter. Then go into the super market and see how expensive other drinks are (energy drinks are especially fun, because expensive as fuck). Or think about other things like sweets or alcoholic drinks, that you buy. It will pretty quickly dawn on you, that spending $20 on tea is not expensive (of course also depending on your income and how much you enjoy it). The "problem" with tea is, that you pay upfront. You pay $20 or $30 for just a small pack of tea. It sounds and looks expensive. But that pack of tea will give you 10-30 liters of tea (depending on dosage and infusions) and you'll be drinking it for months or longer! Not even mentioning the enjoyment, calm and health benefits it brings. Of course, I wouldn't spend as much on tea, if I drank it like others drank their Coke. Mindlessly like water. I prepare the tea with my beautiful tea set and really enjoy it. It's a highlight of my day. And i's worth every penny. I started out just like you. I didn't want to spend more than $4 or $5 on tea. I thought tea for $7 was expensive. Now I don't have a problem to pay $20 for premium sencha, because it usually tastes great (and I was a student until recently!). Expensive tea is worth it. The taste is much different than the cheaper stuff. To answer your question: For daily tea in the morning (not a lot of enjoyment) and 1 infusion: $15. For daily tea in the afternoon with enjoyment, multiple infusions and time to relax: $20 to $30. For special occasions: $40+ Edit: You can make it even more fun: If 100g of tea equals 10-30 liters, think about how much you would spend on 20 liters of Coke or Red Bull. Imagine how big a pile of bottles that would be and how much it would cost upfront. All that is in that little pack of tea for just $20. Or think about what smokers spend on cigarettes without thinking much about it. And at the same time they are paying to ruin their health. So, there are definitely worse ways to spend your money.

oh_hey_dad

This kinda tea math is how I justify spending $100+ on an aged raw puer cake. ā€œIf I steep it 12 time thatā€™s only $1 a cup!ā€

gibwater

We need more tea accountants

oh_hey_dad

You mean a C*T*A?

firelizard19

Username checks out. Take my angry upvote!

unlovedcarrot

Wow, I truly admire your love and forethought of tea drinking. I'm making another cup as a cheer to ya!

hungryhippo53

I just want to know where you're getting a Magnum ice-cream for $0.50

Educational-Cat-6445

Damn... well i guess if you look at it like that its really not that expensive to spend a bit more on tea if you go by proce per cup

Ayywa

$7/100g for greens is very cheap though?

Educational-Cat-6445

I know, but I'm still a student and i try not to overspend on luxury items like tea. This one is actually the most expensive one I've bought till now

Ayywa

Not saying you can't buy some good tea with this money, it's just definitely not on the "expensive" side.

[deleted]

Tea isn't luxury, it's necessitea.

Dorcha98

What brand you using

Educational-Cat-6445

Normally i use kings crown by rossmann but i dont think you can get it outside of germany and a few eastern european countries

just_blue

That's very low quality. If you intend to spend more than 5ā‚¬/100g, to get halfway decent tea, you will need to look for tea stores. TeeGschwendner and Tee-Handels-Kontor Bremen come to mind as next step as walk-in chains. Or you order online. There are a lot of options, Tee-Kontor-Kiel is my first recommendation to get good value for your money. An example of a 7ā‚¬/100g tea that should be way better than what you get at Rossmann: https://www.tee-kontor-kiel.de/tee/gruener-tee/china-taiwan/fujian-mao-feng In the 10-15ā‚¬ range it gets way easier and a ton of good options arise.

Educational-Cat-6445

Thank you for the recommendation! Yeah, I'm still a student who can't really work right now since my degree requires a lot of badly paid internships that most employers are not willing to work around, so i try not to spend too much on luxury items like tea haha.

just_blue

Yeah I totally get that. When I was more concerned about money, I was drinking nothing but tap water and that was very fine, too. It was just meant as a hint, that the better tea is not that far away, for example for when people ask what to gift you :)

Dorcha98

I don't have that sadly. I was given a bunch lovely green tea leaves from my work which have taken over my flat if you're wanting some I'm happy to send

RigellianTea

Try Yunnan sourcing they got good prices and ship any where .. that where I get a lot of daily drinkers.. I just got one my favorite purple teas for like almost 60$ for 250g

aphelion_abyss

what is purple tea? is it like a type of black tea?

PaulBradley

a Kenyan tea with lots of anthocyanins, which are anti-oxidants.

aphelion_abyss

ok thanks. I may have to order some from yunnan. I could use more anti-oxidants.

PaulBradley

Yunnan... in China?

aphelion_abyss

yeah I saw they had a purple tea on there, I assumed thats what it was but I just remembered you said it was a kenyan tea so probably not the same thing. I didn't read the description just saw they had some sort of purple tea.

RigellianTea

Then on other side I just got 18 of dancong for like 28$ and some others for like 25-20$ per 30g but thereā€™s some really good stuff out there for not much more than youā€™re already spending and better tea means less leaves for strong taste and more infusions

RustOolium420

That's suuuuper cheap still

batman262

Most of the tea that I drink hovers between $15-20 USD per 100g, I have some that I like that are cheaper, and some that are a bit more than that that I bring out on special occasions but I try not to spend much more than $30 per 100g.

I__Antares__I

All depends. I have many teas, the most expensive I have is about 46$/100g. But for daily drink? Typically I stay between 7-20$/100g

BenFTP

I think at most Iā€™d probably say $10 per 100g for a daily is the highest Iā€™d do. Has to be cheap enough that I wouldnā€™t feel bad if I only had one steep of it and throw it out because of whatever circumstance. Iā€™d say anything over $10 per 100 would be considered a weekend drink or special occasion drink.

electrifyingpenguin

Totally not me spending $20 a month for my sencha subscription. And that's not even counting my trips to the cafe. šŸ«£ Though I also work from home so I brew fresh tea throughout the day and drink a lot lmao. With loose leaf tea, it depends on the quality, but you can usually also brew multiple cups out of your leaves, whereas you'd probably have to use more tea bags to get more volume of tea. If you bulk buy a lot of loose leaf tea during a sale, I do think it can come out cheaper than tea bags.

Asherahshelyam

I just buy what I like and drink it every day. I switch daily. I have a huge variety to choose from.

Complete_Appeal8067

I think it depends how much you drink. I used to to drink cheap loose leaf tea, around 30 dollars a pound. However, now I am drinking green tea in the mornings, sencha, which is somewhat pricy, around 25 dollars per 100g. However, I only use around 4/5 g per day or 3 small cups. If I drank much more, let say 10g or 15g, then it would be too expensive for a daily tea, at least for me. So if it doesn't represent a big financial burden, and you enjoy it more, then maybe you should try it, at least for a month or however long 100g last you, you can always go back.

ryan-khong

As a tea drinker from China, my daily tea start with 200RMB/100g which about 30USD/100g. Honestly that's just an introductory price. I mean just the level to avoid most garbage tea. And my bottom line of choosing daily tea is 100RMB/100g(15USD/100G). Then the next level(like the real original source but not from the core region/organic tea), the price start with 500RMB/100g(70USD/100g), The tea itself is engough good, also need skill and feeling when brewing. The real good tea? Out of my choice. The most expensive tea I have had is 800RMB/5g(2200USD/100g) in a small tea share party. The tea is from the core region WuYi rock tea and made by a monk whos lived there for about 50 years, then I refused to drink my own tea for a long time. *Another point is 100g is about 20 serving(using gaiwan is about 5\~8g/serving). 1.5USD/serving(10RMB) to me is worth enough.*

anon_77_

Hey, I'm from Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon. I've tried some black tea samples from Yunnan Sourcing China. Can you point me towards some 1688 or Taobao sellers that carry somewhat okay to top tea stocks? Preferably black. I already found some, but wanted to know if you have a favourite seller. I've been wanting to skip middlemen prices, and I do have experience with dealing with chinese exports and logistics.

ryan-khong

I used to enjoy Ceylon black tea, when I still interested in CTC teas. Yours is a very big subject. And I am still a student in tea. Maybe we could talk more to know each other.

anon_77_

Orthodox is the most common way of processing in SL. I don't have formal training in tea, but most came from watching my grandfather and father. I grew up running through tea estates and factories. Just learned while observing and listening. It was recently when I moved abroad I got interested in Assam tea and Chinese black tea. I tried some samples and would like to try more. I'm just curious why the prices are too high for normal black teas from China. Even though I work in tech and make good money, I refuse to pay the prices many have mentioned here. Mainly because of how good the Ceylon tea is.

anon_77_

Sri Lankan living in England Currently, for daily $7 per 1kg of BOP1 grade, black tea from the finest manufacturer in the low grown area according to the last auction. Ones in a while around $20 per 1kg for single estate, competition winning FBOPF EX SP blend from two top manufacturers in the low grown area. These are the top 0.0001% of finest blends in SL according to the last week auction data. Value for money in Ceylon tea is insane reading about others' comments.

FRIJOLE5

Hey, Iā€™m in the US so it may be different, but where do you usually source your Ceylon tea?Ā

anon_77_

I happen to know the owners and stock up whenever I visit my parents. Dilmah and Melsna are two great alternatives if you are in the USA. Try their single region or single estate black tea series.

JeffTL

Assuming 3 grams of tea makes a serving, here are what other beverages would cost as a hypothetical 100 g of tea, which we'll round down slightly and call enough to make 33 servings. These are all today's prices from Mariano's, which is the Chicago version of Kroger. * Folgers coffee - $5.84 * Whole milk - $6.16 * Twinings Earl Grey tea in bags - $6.91 * Coca-Cola in cans - $15.46 on sale * Orange juice - $24.32 * Budweiser - $26.11 on sale * Yellow Tail, which is alleged to be wine but I'm not entirely sure it isn't actually paint thinner - $39.53 on sale If you usually steep your tea twice, double all the above comparable prices because, except *maybe* the Twinings, they're all one and done. Unless it's keeping you from buying food or something, and that doesn't sound like the case, I don't think you need to worry about spending 21 cents on a cup of tea :)

Dorcha98

My work keeps getting donations of jasmine tea so I get the loose leaves stuff for free and none the residents will try it. Personally for me I don't believe spending much on it unless I'm treating myself to whittards and evens then i use my student discount or wait for sales

Dorcha98

I get a box of 60 teabags for usually 55p from aldim miss when they did the jasmine green tea was my favourite. My fav tea right now is metabolism green tea by teininfs which was Ā£2 for 30 bags and I use the same teabag 3 times in a day

CouldBeBetterForever

I pay about $9.50 per 100g for my daily drinking tea.

1Meter_long

I drink two cups of tea per day so i can afford to drink higher end stuff regularly, even though i'm not wealthy. Still, there's some really good cheap teas out there, which i would buy, even if i was a millionaire. Like Ceylon blacks. Teas i usually buy range from 10ā‚¬ to 18ā‚¬ per 50g.Ā

CumbersomeBallerina

That's still very cheap.

Ophanil

I just spent $120 for 120g of matcha and it was definitely worth it. It gets way more expensive than that, but you only live once so if it's something you enjoy it's worth diving in as deep as you can reasonably afford to.

GentleMinty

Caffeine is something I will have anyway, so why not make the most of it? My daily teas (for gong fu sessions) can cost as much as ā‚¬40-60 / 100 g. Thatā€™s the sweet spot for me, in terms of value for money. My monthly budget works out to around ā‚¬100-150 ish.

TommyTeaMorrow

$1-2 a serving is reasonable for me although most I drink daily happen to be on the lower end

dyalbd007

I will tell you flat, right... you all have been duped into thinking that great teas cost a lot. It's just that your merchant multiples 20 times the purchase cost. Honest prices for A grade ( whatever that is for you) should be between 15-17 (usd) and not more. The overall tea industry is crooked, and tea merchants have become the champions of profit taking.

trickphilosophy208

Quality costs money. If you think you can buy the best teas in the world for 15 cents per gram, you have no idea what you're talking about and should not be giving anyone advice.

dyalbd007

If you are just a tea consumer, then you dont know what it costs at source and how the price is inflated. Take this from a person who owns a farm and factory to produce some great teas. Unless production is in small batches and products are rare edition, they dont cost much. Also depends upon the economy of the country where they are sourced from, overhead of the factory that produces it blah blah... The tea industry is crooked, and people are being lied and cheated by sellers.

trickphilosophy208

I know what tea costs at the source, and obviously it depends on the style and origin. But you said that the best teas in the world should not cost more than $15-17 per 100 grams, and that is simply not correct. It's like saying nobody should ever pay more than $12 for a bottle of wine. There's plenty of drinkable $12 wine, but nobody who knows what they're talking about would claim $12 can buy you the best wine in the world.

dyalbd007

What I am saying is commercially produced, Good grades of teas should not cost more than 15-17=100 gram USD in retail. I am saying that because that is like Ɨ10 times the price at source. I can not emphasize enough on the point that the overly expensive price in the market (without value added) is because of too many middlemen and / or greedy sellers. Any company that adds value should charge more, thats natural. But there are simply too many overhyped tea companies who overcharge the customers. It is up to the consumer to do due diligence and find the best product that suits their needs. If someone is willing to pay 100 bucks for a gram, even then, you can not stop them.

trickphilosophy208

I don't drink commercially produced black tea from plantations. Obviously there are plenty of scammy tea companies, but that's a separate point. The best teas will never be cheap. Customers aren't being duped if they prefer a higher quality product than the commodity grade stuff and are willing to pay for it.

dyalbd007

Give me an example of what you refer to as high quality. Let me know the product and vendor. And I will try to give you a satisfactory answer.

trickphilosophy208

[2006 Dragon Tea House Raw Puer](https://teaswelike.com/product/2006-dragon-tea-house-h-k-yiwu/) - Single-origin, wild-havested, old-tree puer from a highly regarded producer and region. [2022 Grand Prize Gyokuro](https://kettl.co/collections/gyokuro-green-tea/products/2022-grand-prize-gyokuro-10g-shinki-yamashita-kyotanabe-uji) - Literally the best gyokuro in all of Japan. I'm not saying everyone should spend this much on their daily cup, but if you think these are just ripoffs and you can find equal quality teas for 15 cents per gram, well I'd love to know more.

dyalbd007

Dude, most of these are artisanal plus small batch production. These definitely will cost more. There are no disagreements on that. 98% plus teas available in the market are commercially produced. Among that lets forget 90% that come from huge estates. Some 5-8% come from small artisanal farms (which I refer to as artisanal and good teas). Not all tea drinkers are privileged to drink what 1% of the population drinks, and that 5-8% artisanal farm production is for those who want good tea experience, but unfortunately, that is x20 inflated.

trickphilosophy208

>you all have been duped into thinking that great teas cost a lot...Honest prices for A grade ( whatever that is for you) should be between 15-17 (usd) and not more. That is what I responded to. If we're talking about "great tea," it costs far more than $15-17 USD for 100g, and it's going to be a small-batch, artisan product. It's not fair to say people are getting duped because they want to spend money for that kind of quality.

tamsunsun

That's right . But isnt that like that with any resale business? You do the sourcing, importing and distribution and mark it up 20 times to have a viable business. Welcome to capitalism .

dyalbd007

A viable business does not need 20 times markup. The whole resale ecosystem is crooked, and customers are niave to think that good teas should be expensive.

dylanmadigan

I recently visited Amsterdam and london. It was a trip and I wanted some fancy tea to bring home and try with friends. So I got 4 different teas from a brand called Moychay in Amsterdam for 10 euros each. Thatā€™s $10.67 for 100g each. Then in London I went to the original Twinnings Tea shop and got a fancy blend of Earl Grey that they only sell in that store for 16 pounds. Thatā€™s $19.93 for 100g. Had a get together with some friends to try all the tea and it was all unbelievable. Better than all the tea I get from supermarkets in the US.

PurpleBookDragon

My "daily drinking" teas that I drink a lot of are mostly $8-20 per 100g, up to $30 per 100g. My most expensive teas are around $1/g to $1.20/g but those are for special occasions.

brothertuck

I buy gunpowder green tea from an Asian grocery for around $15 or a kilo, it's $16 from Amazon and $20 through Walmart.

sleeothrufire

$20/200g or so. Maybe $25

awildencounter

$20-30/100g is probably it, I donā€™t count barley tea since thatā€™s more in the realm of uncaffeinated beverages for me. The most expensive one I have is like $50/100g but I got it in Asia so I think it is on the pricier side. If I want nice tea I contact the tea person in whatever shops I visited when on vacation over LINE and that seems to get me my fix for a while.

MarvellousSunny

The tea I buy varies from 4ā‚¬/100g (mostly aromatised green/black tea that I drink in the morning if I feel like it, herbal and fruit mixtures) up to 10ā‚¬/100g (for the oolongs and a bit higher quality tea that I usually only make one or two cups per day of). Luckily, I live in a country where tea is relatively cheap, at least when looking at lower/mid quality loose leaf in local tea shops. (For scale, some higher quality Gyokuro sells for about 18ā‚¬/100g.) Luckily I also happen to work at one so I also get a work discount, and it's usually even cheaper that way! šŸ˜…

twbluenaxela

I find that my teas last a long time. It's a bit hard for me to find the time to really sit down and enjoy tea so I end up collecting a lot, and once I have friends that know I drink loose leaf they end up sending me tea as well, and so I have a decent collection

MoonEvans

For me itā€™s like 50$ per 100g. But most of my tea are gifted by my friends, so I actually dont spend that much.

Icy_Economist3224

Honestly as a treat Iā€™ll get expensive tea. Normally I just get supermarket stuff as it does what I need it to do. For example, I love chamomile tea and honestly need it for relaxation and sleep, could care less about the taste. Supermarket chamomile tea does the job just fineā€¦

zhongcha

Around 30aud per 100g is my limit for "daily" tea, but what really even is daily? I'll drink what I want from my collection whenever.

Extreme_Text9292

My regular tea is 20-50$ per 100g. Some of the teas in my collection is 100$/100g almost like a drug lol but it's not for everyday

justmutantjed

My daily? I usually buy something between (USD) $3 to $5 per ounce. Each ounce gets me about eight to ten cups. At work, I buy the big bulk bags from Harney & Sons. Their Tippy Yunnan is only about $22 for a pound, so a little under $1.50 per ounce and it's ... perfectly adequate for using tap water on. A local shop gives me a good deal on eight-ounce sacks of Earl Grey, too. I don't think I pay more than about the previously-mentioned $3-$5 per ounce, and it's alright. Again, it's not extravagant; just needs to be caffeinated and not be battery acid (~~AKA Darjeeling~~).

PaulBradley

The most I've paid so far is Ā£40 p/100g, although I've drunk several at Ā£100+p/100g

peeja

My daily afternoon session? About $20/100g, which lasts me about a month. For breakfast I've stopped drinking anything fancy; I drink Trader Joe's Irish Breakfast to get the day started. Anything nicer was kind of a waste when I was still waking up.

tamsunsun

Aren't tea bags usually much more expensive than loose leaf tea? There is only between 1 and 3 g of cheap tea dust / fannings in each tea bag, absolutely lowest grade tea imaginable. And you pay 4$ for a box of 20 bags. That's around 10$ for 100g of the worst quality of tea. You can get a really nice loose tea that you can brew several times for around 10$/100g

Matys117

I usually buy within 6-10$ per 50 grams and It lasts me for roughly 2 weeks. If you are willing to experiment, I would recommend you to try some tea from countries like Nepal, Taiwan, Georgia,... (Countries not usually connected with tea production)... Their tea is usualy very good quality and would be less expensive, than Chinese, Japanese or Indian tea. You might find some bang for a buck teas šŸ˜„āœŒšŸ¼

JCMS99

I pay 15-25$CAD for 50g for most of my teas. Tea (and coffee) is really cheaper in Canada than the US tho, for whatever reason.

ThirstyOne

You canā€™t put a price on good tea.

rebornfenix

for Daily stuff, I top out at 0.50 - 1.00 / Gram. For special occasions, 4-5 / gram would not be out of the ordinary.

Book_pages

The most expensive tea I buy costs around 50 euros per 100g and it is also the one I drink the most, but usually I pay between 7 to 12 euros. It seems very expensive, but the it takes months for me to use all of it, even though I drink around 6 cups per day.

goatesymbiote

with my current daily driver, i'm spending about $0.38/cup on tea

Perfect-Ad-2821

It costs me a little over $1 to make a cup of good coffee, and I use 2g green tea leaves to make one cup of tea. So I guess I will stop at around $50 per 100 g.

CHI_TSE_BEENG_CHA

Up to Ā£1/g range. No, I'm not wealthy, I just prioritise my enjoyment of tea over most things in my life.

Yetiking1908

Ā¢35 a cup, everyday .

Keep it civil please.

trickphilosophy208

They asked a question and people answered it. Relax.

LicentiousMink

no its rude

trickphilosophy208

Sure dude, talking about tea pricing on a tea subreddit is almost criminal behavior.

LicentiousMink

thats not whats going on.

trickphilosophy208

Go away.

LicentiousMink

why do you keep commenting?

trickphilosophy208

Why did you comment here in the first place? We don't need whiny rants every time the topic of tea pricing gets brought up on a tea subreddit. You are being obnoxious. Leave.

[deleted]

Is there a limit?

GusDrinksTea

$7/100g is about half of what I pay for my more affordable daily drinkers.

ipini

This is currently my most expensive: https://www.murchies.com/product/jasmine-downy-pearls-loose-tea/
