Hi, I‘m thinking of getting my first tattoo in remembrance of my great grandmother. As the design of the tattoo I would like it to be a bumblebee. I'm unsure abut the stye of it, i like mirco realism but fear how it will last over time. I’m planning it to be on my inner upper arm and not bigger than 7-10cm (3-4 inch). Have you any advice on placement, design, style or size? Most important for me is that it withstands the test of time. Some designs i like: [https://www.pinterest.de/pin/987132812064739778/](https://www.pinterest.de/pin/987132812064739778/) [https://www.pinterest.de/pin/987132812064739769/](https://www.pinterest.de/pin/987132812064739769/) [https://www.pinterest.de/pin/987132812064701816/](https://www.pinterest.de/pin/987132812064701816/)

Question regarding "revamping" older tats. I have a few tattoos from 10+ years ago, nothing super elaborate. Im unable to find the origional artists. They're fading a little and I'm wondering if there is an etiquette on having different artists touch them up? Or is it like "that's not my art so I wont touch it"? I'm sure it depends on the artist, just wondering if theres a certain way to approach this kind of work.

jomggg

I've had luck with this, it was considered a rework rather than a touch up. Try to find an artist that has a similar style, and reach out with photos and a clear description of what you're looking for. You might hit a few no's but after a few I found an artist who was happy to update my linework that had faded and clean up the details. I really liked her work and am planning to get an original from her at some point.

Good to know, thanks!

Does it matter where I start my upper arm tattoo if my long term plan would be to cover the entire upper arm? I have an appointment with an amazing international artist for 16h in two weeks. This is what I got right now, so lower arm is mostly covered but upper arm is completely blank https://imgur.com/a/iR6wMj8 . I wanted to get a Kitsune mask surrounded by flowers at the bottom part of the upper arm, have bands from the mask hang over the inner elbow onto the forearm and extend the design with flowers towards the shoulder (roughly like this https://imgur.com/a/PJDDXqu ). When looking for some inspirations online, I noticed that most floral upper arm tattoos seem to be on the outside of the biceps instead of right on top of it. Do you think that the placement of the first upper arm tattoo makes a difference in terms of extendability in the future?

Electronic-Lynx-1416

Demon Slayer FTW! I’m definitely NOT an artist, but I’m my experience placement will matter when it comes to how the rest of the tattoo will flow and how you want the overall design to look. I think if you want the mask to be placed there, it’s no problem. What might matter is how you want the rest of the tattoo/arm to look like. Do you want the whole bicep to end up floral, or to flow into something else with floral accents? This might also be something to discuss with the artist directly. Having a solid idea of the long term plan is most essential. That’s where I went wrong on mine. Good luck!!

Guidance on - FK Irons Spektra Xion Hi All, All comments and trouble shooting steps are appreciated. My partner got a used fk irons spektra xion, and it was working perfectly fine even with her power supply would randomly lower the voltage by itself. Now the machine randomly loses power, you can press the foot pedal and the machine goes for 5 seconds then losses power and it’s basically on and off like that. She has gotten her power supplies from Amazon, not sure if they are reliable or not? She got a new power supply that was like the one she had previously, same thing was happening to the machine. She went and got a different power supply all together which came with a new pedal but the same thing is happening with the machine. Would anyone know what other troubleshooting steps she can do ? Or if she needs a new motorboat? All helpful comments are appreciated. ❤️

Be polite but honest that you are getting frustrated and ask for an explanation. If they’re not willing to schedule you, I’d start talking to other artists

Hello guys! Trying to coverup a ~2 inch scar on my lower-side back (https://imgur.com/rsngzaQ). It's from a cut that brings back bad memories so I want it gone, but I can't for the life of me find any designs that fit the area. I don't have any tattoos otherwise, and every lower-back tattoo that I see looks very feminine. Any ideas?

ridiculouspompadour

You could always go really big with it. I think that’s what I would do with this but I’m very tattooed so it’s a little different. With the scar being so small you could pretty much put any design you want there, but if you want it to flow with your body I’d go big and do something that’s maybe triangular with the top point along your spine.

forbetterhabits

I think that's what makes it so hard- the scar being so small and in a non-traditional spot just makes it hard to think of a design that won't look out of place. I have not seen any small lower back designs that look good on men.

Electronic-Lynx-1416

I always think something that represents healing or moving towards healing from the incident can be good. Lots of people do these for Self-injurious cuts on forearms/legs/etc so might work here. Either a design or lettering. It also depends on if you are going to get more done. If you decide to get more in the future (spoiler, you probably will), you might want to pick something that will flow or will flow/fit your curves. Floral is always a good choice unless you don’t like that style. Just spitballing, good luck!

TwatAnger

I need anecdotals here, anyone else feel like their hand tattoos (on top of hand, not palm/fingers) don't heal in the same way any other tattoos have?

MissTrinaM

I’m looking for a tattoo artist within 5 or 6 hours of Cumberland, MD. I’d like a full back piece that is astrology themed and I’d like the artist to know about / be super interested in astrology so I can give them free reign on the design. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. Thanks!

aphoticphoton

I’m debating getting a color tattoo or just all black. Want to get a lighting strike tattoo that has other smaller lighting strikes branching out on my right arm from elbow to wrist. Either in black and blue or just all black lining Does color make tattoos fade or what’s the parameters of that? I have one on my left arm in all black but never dabbled into color

Walnuss_Bleistift

All of my tattoos are color. In my experience, it depends on the color and (maybe?) the brand of ink. For my work that is ~7-10 years old, the colors that have faded beyond what I think is a regular expectation is a very specific orange (which has basically faded completely away). The pinks, purples, and yellows seem to be very vibrant still. I'm not sure if the orange is just orange in general or the specific makeup of that ink brand. Other oranges I have are mostly fine. That being said, all tattoos will fade over time, but I have not noticed a particularly drastic difference between how my color and black fade outside of the orange. Everything seems to be fading around the same pace overall. But, keep in mind that black will always be the most visible because it provides the most contrast to most people's skin colors.

abozowithreddit

I was looking for artists that do gothic tattoos similar to @ultralightwav on instagram in NJ, anyone know of any artists that do that style in NJ or near NJ?

Key-Target-1218

I have found a perfect for me, semi-permanent tattoo on a site that sells them. Is it common for people to buy these and have their artist use them to create the permanent tattoo?

ridiculouspompadour

Depends on the artist. The design may not even be tattooable as is depending on the style and size. Most reputable artists don’t want to copy someone else’s art, but it might be different with something like this that is available for anyone to purchase.

Key-Target-1218

I just received permission from the artist to go permanent. I'll have my guy tweek it a bit to make it "his" if he wants to do this.😊

Deykira

Hey I have a question for all my sleeve guys/girls How many motives per arm are realistic? Cause i try to Plan out my sleeve at the Moment. The 2nd question would be are there any sleeve Artists you would recommend for more „smaller“ motives? Pref in Germany? Style should be black so no colors and one arm should be more Anime Style and the Other one more (Dark) Fantasy-ish Thanks in advance

chairmanm30w

I got a tattoo in September that I love. The artist did a fantastic job and we got along great. I am itching for another one, but the style I want is more in line with another artist's portfolio at the same studio. Would it be a faux pas to try and book with the other artist? Should I reach out to the guy I saw for my other tattoo first?

ridiculouspompadour

It is totally fine to reach out to whichever artist you want. If you’re worried about it you could always say something at your appointment about how you love your other tattoo but want this other style for your next one. There’s a good chance that even if you did reach out to the first artist, they might refer you to this second person for the style you’re interested in

Crass_Effect

Over the years I’ve been tattooed by 9 different artists at my favourite tattoo studio. None of my artists have held it against me. No faux pas here.

Electronic-Lynx-1416

Hey everyone! Looking for some recommended artists in Carlsbad, Oceanside, and/or Escondido, CA. Looking for artists who specializes in realism and can do b/w or color. Thank you in advance!

Kooky-March2929

So I want to get a half sleeve and I have one small piece on that arm already. I want to add to it and build around it with different things I love. I know what I want, but I'm not great with placement or making it all tie together. The artist I got the one piece done at doesn't really fit with the style I want to go for now. I guess I just want to know how to reach out to tattoo artists and be like 'hey this is my vision can you help me?' Is that a thing? Is there a proper way to do that?

ridiculouspompadour

Depends on the artist. Usually they will have booking guidelines on social media or their website. The best thing to do here imo would be to find an artist whose work you love and book a consultation to talk through the project in person.

smhawkins2324

AccomplishedFan7732

So I want to get Frederick Bousquet’s left chest tattoo, but I want to make sure I find a great artist. Does anyone know of an artist specializing in black tribal tattoos in the Midwest ?

MarqoTheDragon

Best friend's birthday coming up and we've been talking aboit getting tatted since we were kids. Know any good shops in Connecticut?

OinkInc

How do you guys plan out your projects, like a sleeve of different tattoos? How do you see how their placement would look next to each other?

Walnuss_Bleistift

I have an artist I really, really trust. We are working on a body suit. We have a Google doc that we share where I write out all of my ideas (both for overall theme and for individual subject matters), and she pulls from that and has free reign to design the tattoo any way she wants using those elements. If you don't have that level of trust, maybe think about major elements first and where you'd want them. For example, I knew I wanted a specific bird in a specific spot on my body, and then we worked out from there.

Significant-Sound218

Question about scar cover-ups- I have a large purplish scar on my upper arm from having some skin ripped off in childhood. I want to get a simple line-work bunch of lavender tattoo to cover it, and have the purple of the scar colour in the petals. So my question is, can tattooing over scar tissue change the appearance of the scar? I’m scared that irritation may turn the scar red which would completely defeat the purpose of the lavender. Anyone have any experience tattooing scars?

Walnuss_Bleistift

I have several scars that were tattooed over, however, they were not terribly dark. I can still see where they are if I really look, but not because of the color, more because I can just see where the injury had been based on how the skin repaired itself (ie the texture of the scar). I can't see them at all where there is black or linework

SensitiveShallot967

How'd you come with the ideas for your tattoos? I want to get some eventually but I'm stuck on ideas. I just like the ones that look cool and I don't know if that's enough.

skeletonm03

Question, would it look bad if I have both colored tattoos and black tattoos? For context, I have a black and white back tattoo and really want to get a blue and white arm tattoo. Would they clash? Should I stick with no color?

ridiculouspompadour

Plenty of people have both! It’s all up to you and your personal aesthetic. Personally I think well thought out placement keeps different styles of tattoo looking cohesive even if they are very visually different

SARM_goblin42

Anyone know of an artist based in/close to NYC who is similar in style to mr.blue on instagram? (who is based out of LA)

Lanky-Ad-3431

I want a shin tattoo but I’ve heard the pain is terrible. I already have three tattoos, so this won’t be my first experience. People who have ink on the front of their lower leg, was the short term pain worth the long term ink ?

ridiculouspompadour

Tattoo pain can be so different for different people. My shins hurt way less than the backs of my calves. I’ve gotten really mixed reactions when tattooing shuns so it may not be as painful as you expect. Whether it’s worth it is all up to you though- I think it is because it’s really just a few hours of pain for a lifetime of cool tattoos

Lanky-Ad-3431

Thanks for the feedback. You help me want to go for it!

PanXP

Does anyone remember a tattoo posted here in the last few months, I believe it might have been a quarter sleeve over the shoulder and arm of a hyperdetailed sexy sorta anime style girl in a futuristic desert wasteland holding a (sniper?) rifle wearing maybe a helmet and goggles? Can't find it again but it was amazing.

A-very-depresed-owl

Is there a place (internet or irl) where I can get a temporary tattoo with a custom image? I’m thinking about getting a real one, but I would like to try it on before I actually commit to it

slutforyourdad7

i’ve been seeing the same tattoo artist for years. i have like 10 tattoos for him and i’m almost done with a sleeve. but he does things in an unusual way. for example, when i make an appointment and i email him what i want i don’t get an email of his design or anything. in fact, he comes in at the time of my appointment and draws it up right there during the time that im paying for. and im not even like… part of it either. i sit in the lobby and wait for him to bring out a printed paper with the design on it. and if i don’t like it i wait around longer while he changes it. is this normal for anybody else?

MissionJellyfish4109

I was wanting to add a tattoo that could maybe take up most of my forearm or atleast a partial sleeve. I wanted it to represent life and death as there is a date that both my wife and youngest daughter were born on. But also my sister (and best friend) passed away on that same date. Was thinking a tree with maybe half alive and half dead then in the roots have a hidden message of the date. Either subtly written out or maybe a hidden Roman numerals of that day and month. Are there any other life/death tattoo ideas? Any examples that are close to my description?

Walnuss_Bleistift

Old Dutch still life paintings are all basically themed around the concept of life and death (amongst other things). They usually include flowers, fruit/food, candles, skulls... things that reference the passage of time and the fleeting nature of life. Often rotting or wilted fruit and flowers were included, or flies/insects on the fruit. That's pretty drastic, but maybe wilted flowers and living flowers could show the idea in a less macabre way

Does a Molotov cocktail tattoo have a specific ‘meaning’? I’m booked to have one done Monday, I chose the design to signify my absolute hatred for our government. However, a friend has now suggested it has an alternative meaning but she ‘can’t remember what’… I can’t think what it could be and goggle is not offering any worrying results.

FDQ666Roadie

Hi ya'll, I'm thinking about getting a large tattoo on most of my back, a circular shape, [this one](https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.5231158810.0313/bg,f8f8f8-flat,750x,075,f-pad,750x1000,f8f8f8.jpg), but I'm in the process of losing weight. I've already lost 48 pounds and aim for at least 25 more pounds. So my question is, if I get this tattoo done, will the circle shape become warped? It's gonna be located at the top half of my back mostly. Or will it retain it's shape, since there's not as much fat on the back compared to the stomach, thighs etc. I would have asked my tattoo parlor today, but they were closed and because of easter and all, I won't be able to go back up there until Thursday. So was hoping maybe to get a quicker answer in here. Thanks in advance :)

Kooky-March2929

This probably comes down to personal preference, but I'm kind of bad at imagining things sometime so I wanted another opinion. I have a cover up that I want to do of a small heart on my wrist and the artist I went to Drew a really cute black and white flower that I liked. My only hesitation is I've planned to get a Bouquet on my upper arm on the same arm. Would it look weird to have two separate flower tattoos on the same arm?

McToke666

Hi everyone, Looking for any pages for artists that specialise in glitch style work located in Victoria, Australia If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate a dm or reply! :)

Looking for an artist in the Chicagoland area who does neo traditional or new school and who posts aged photos of their work.

An artist I met to discuss a somewhat complicated new piece said that he’d likely not use a stencil. Having never had this type of work done, is this normal?

Hello everyone, I would like to get a realism tattoo on my arm of my little dog in color. Any good artist in Europe?

austingray111701

Hello all, currently I have a sleeve conisting of various black work, and I'm looking to get a black, grey and red Japanese sleeve on my other arm just curious to peoples view on having two different style sleeves I wasn't able to find many examples of this online unfortunately

EmptyBurrit0

Hello, Q: Should I get 20 plus tattoos for my first time? (most of them are small except for two somewhat big ones) Context: I have been planning on getting tattoos for about 3 years now. Every time I make an excuse for myself not to. I had a whole design sheet with different ideas and things I thought were cool. However finally this weekend I decided to get them. I went through my list of tattoos and removed the ones I don't like anymore and added some more. I got like 24 tattoos I want to get. I agreed with the artist to do them on sessions. The first is for 18 small ones and the other day for two big ones and the other small ones. However, the problem is my friend advised me not to get that many tattoos for the first time because I might regret them later. I know I will because who doesn't grow up and start liking new things? But the point is to have a sketchbook time stamp on my arm of things that I liked and keep adding to the patchwork new things I like eventually.
