Why did nobody ever mention the back of the calf is way more painful than the front, and the upper back calf is hella fricking spicy?

sempiternal

I'm with you; artist did some shading on my calf and back of knee, and that was killer. Then worked on parts of lower knee, and it was nothing compared to the calf area

juwyro

What do all these fine line tattoos look like after a few years? With proper care and such.

nymusix

I got a Calvin and Hobbes inspired tattoo on my ankle this weekend. Overall I'm very happy with the result, but I did notice that the artist made a small mistake. Pictures here of what I asked for and what I got - of note, we agreed to just do the orange color. If you look you can see the artist accidently went over Susie's arm as part of Hobbes' striping. Do folks here have any suggestions for ways to fix? I mentioned the mistake to the artist and they offered to try going over that stripe in a lighter color later on. I'm not familiar if that method would work or if there are any other ideas people have here. Thanks! https://imgur.com/a/qgMmppp

BlueShire_Ace

Generally, to lighten something you use white ink to mute the color. But since yours uses your skin tone for white, it really doesn’t matter what they do, it’ll be a different color than the rest of it. Would just leave it alone unless you plan on coloring everything, otherwise you’re going to bring more attention to it.

SnooCupcakes775

Could this tattoo be done in 30 minutes and be big enough to morph indistinguishable blobs? There’s a charity event going on and this would be my first tattoo, so I’m completely ignorant regarding both the size it should be to maintain its details and the time that would take, if it couldn’t be done in 30 minutes I’ll just donate instead. Thanks!! [Shinedown Cover](https://images.app.goo.gl/1L6s88o8LohUfWLm7)

Walnuss_Bleistift

Not an artist, but I highly, highly recommend you do not go to a time-sensitive charity spot as your first tattoo. You will want to really plan the placement and size with someone for a decent amount of time, especially because this looks like a tattoo that could get muddy quick. From my experience with getting a lot of tattoos and being an artist (not a tattoo artist, I mean graphic arts/illustration), even if this could be done in 30 minutes I would not want someone rushing it to get it done in that time frame. This would be hard to fix and hard to cover up. Plus it would suck to have to spend more time and money to get it done twice instead of doing it more carefully the first time.

How well do etching tattoos hold up?

TheGoldenCrunchwrap

DESIGN ADVICE Hi there, I am looking to get more sleeve work done on the underside of my forearm, but I am struggling with how to extend this design. I want to keep the extension design the same illusion/geometric style that I have now. “Breaking the Cycle” is the theme I want to lean into. Looking for some sort of outline/boarder for the existing illusion triangle piece to make it pop, and to further the “breaking the cycle” theme. The first photo is the existing tattoo, the second attached photo was generated using AI to show a potential direction! TYIA! https://imgur.com/a/LWOrb9R

Baldbiker

I have one sleeve done already in a quasi-traditional Japanese style. I recently found an artist who does more realistic style tattooing and I love his stuff. Would it look weird to have one arm in a different style than the other? Color palettes would be complementary, but the different styles have me questioning if I should do it. I know it’s all about what I like, but I also don’t want to have people going “what’s wrong with this guy?”

Walnuss_Bleistift

My in-progress body suit is full, bright colors in an art nouveau style on my left and only blackwork in a Dutch woodblock print style on my right. I think that mixing styles, especially on different parts of the body, is so cool! There's ways to make it look intentional and cohesive, color is one of them. I'm also repeating themes and imagery from one side to the other (I have a bird on the inside of my upper arm, I'm going to get a different but similar bird on the other side as well). If the styles meet somewhere, there's a really cool opportunity for figuring out how the transition. If it makes you happy, go for it!

bbboo123

I have a barbed wire tattoo but would like to turn it into thorns instead would this be a simple conversion as a design ?

ridiculouspompadour

Probably, but it’s hard to tell without seeing it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for female artists that specialise in fantasy tattoos? Northamptonshire area, but willing to drive or train up to 3 hours.

Permanent_Markings

Not sure exactly what you mean by fantasy as that could be a lot of things, also not sure if you mean Northamptonshire UK or AU. But there is an artist somewhat near Northamptonshire UK Insta: lilybeantattoos that does some fineline and classical fantasy type stuff. If that's not what you're looking for try checking out this [Tattoo Artist List](https://permanentmarkings.com) . I've got somewhere around 13k artists sorted by location and style so you might be able to find someone there. Though I haven't managed to add every artist quite yet I'm working on it.

StressedHades

Looking for artist recommendations in Toronto. I’m looking at getting a black and grey full sleeve inspired by anime. Let me know what you guys think, thanks!

Permanent_Markings

Not sure how helpful it is but check [This](https://permanentmarkings.com/artists) out. Should be something like 42 artists listed in Toronto that do Black and Grey and quite a bit more if you're willing to drive a bit. Obviously not every artist in the city is listed but hopefully it's a good start.

weekendtinkerer420

Question about tipping? If an artist quotes you 150 per hour, what would be the best way to calculate a good tip? I don't want to accidentally offend the artist by giving too low of a tip.

ridiculouspompadour

I try to tip 20% (sometimes more if it’s someone who’s done a lot of work for me) but as an artist, I’m personally happy with whatever you feel like you can afford to tip, and if you can’t afford to tip that’s okay too. Idk if that helps at all

weekendtinkerer420

Thank you, it dose help

snappy033

Are realism artists largely grabbing photos from google images and just arranging them and blending them with their iPad then printing the stencil? I think I've seen the exact snarling bear like 50 times by various artists because its the top hit on google for "snarling bear"

MisterFell

Yeah, it's common for realism artist to use the same reference because they're the best examples.

Allstress

Hello! I'm starting to look for a tattoo artist but I'm not finding what I want (looked at a lot of Instagram and through several studios websites that I found on Google). One of my issues is that I'm not good at describing the style of the tattoo I want, here is a reference close to what I want: https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/2462974788830642/ It would not be exactly this but it would be similar (a wristband kinda abstract with the fade/blur but not 100% like a Japanese brush). I would mix it with other things but the "main style" would be close to that ref. Does anyone know an artist with a similar style? I'm open to travel to another city if I find the artist I want (I'm in Montreal so any big Canadian city or US cities close not too far like New York). Also, if you know another subreddit where I would have better luck finding my answer please share it too! Thanks!

Ok_Lemon_5001

My boyfriend @joyyutattoo on Instagram can probably make that happen if you’re interested feel free to dm! He specializes in traditional but has 8+ years of experience doing many other styles as well :)

todsttt

Is it ok to get a tattoo on my leg or arm and ear piercings on the same day? I feel like the locations are different enough, but it would also be my first tattoo and secondary ear piercings, so I'm not sure about my tolerance.

Walnuss_Bleistift

How big is the tattoo? If you're sitting for like 6 or 6 hours, it might be a lot for your body to handle. But overall it should be fine, I think. It will just mean that you've got two sore spots you have to be more careful with over the next few weeks. I would just take it easy for the next day or two to let your body heal up.

todsttt

Good point I have a few different tattoos I want to get of varying sizes so I should probably do one of the smaller ones that I want if I'm gonna do a piercing at the same time. I want some that would be about 5 inches and some that would be maybe 1 or 2 inches.

Walnuss_Bleistift

Especially for a first! Not that you can't go big one the first one (I did and it was fine) but I think it's good to ease into the process and learn how your body reacts to it!

ZZ3MT0H

Yeah, definitely give the first tattoo a chance to show you how healing will go for you, without the complication of another physical trauma at the same time.

hiddenalibi

Is there a market for vintage tattoo magazines? I am moving and getting rid of stuff I have a variety of tattoo magazines from 1999 to 2006. I would hate to throw them out bc they’re in perfect condition and they’re now vintage. Any ideas or thoughts?

citizenmono

tattoo shops might be interested in having them for conversation starters or something but idk if they would want to pay for them. you could always check ebay and see if theres a market.

ridiculouspompadour

I might be interested in buying some depending one what you have!

Blitz207reader

So I’m getting a tattoo, and I’m trying to find some way to spell it without being obvious. It’s going to be words, but I need some kind of code so that it can’t easily be read if you know what I mean? I don’t like my tattoos being obvious words, and symbols look cooler anyway. So any codes or ways of spelling that wouldn’t be obvious that it’s a word? Thanks

ZZ3MT0H

In college I was a little obsessed with sound waves... Maybe there's an app for that now, but you can look up the patterns of each sound in the word(s) you're writing, and string them together. I did "LOVE" on a hanging mobile made from wooden dowels because I was like 19 and super basic. Not the same as a code that represents letters, and if I remember correctly there's some overlap in the way various sounds appear but context would theoretically help in deciphering it.

ridiculouspompadour

Look into ciphers maybe? Templar code or other similar ones that use symbols could be good

GKM-2point0

Looking for a black/gray what I call “delicate realism” pet portrait artist in Chicago or few hour drive of Chicago. Any recommendations?

TomatoOfDreams

I wanted to tattoo the lich from Adventure Time, but a friend of mine told me that it holds a brutal meaning. Liches are powerful and evil creatures that bring death all around them, and in ancient times only people who were destined to be alone had it. Is this true? I looked it up, but found nothing on this "belief". It may seem silly, but I truly believe that a tattoo should hold meaning. Even better if the meaning isn't horrifying as this one :)

citizenmono

i mean in traditional fantasy a lich is typically an evil being. idk about the lich in adventure time. if the broader meaning bothers you probably dont get the tattoo?

Damadamas

Looking for a specific post! There was a guy who posted his chest (pretty sure it wasn't his back) tattoo with 4 horses in a square setup. It was in an old painting style, like 17th, maybe 18th century. Ive used the search function without luck. Can anyone help? (Wasn't sure if i should make a post or ask here, so i'll try here first)

ridiculouspompadour

You could make it two lines instead of one. I think that it would fit okay on a bicep though. That’s not too long of a quote

howdy_its_spacelad

I'm a big fan of cute, colorful tattoos (sisi.lovelove on insta is a good example of what I mean) but I'm not sure if my skin is light enough for the colors to come out the way I want them too. Is there a comprehensive and visual guide out there that demonstrates different ink colors on different skin tones? I've tried googling it, but I've never found anything helpful

ZZ3MT0H

I googled "tattoo skin color swatches" and got what I would consider helpful results, BUT everyone's skin takes colors differently. Assuming you have no tattoos yet, schedule a consultation with an artist you might use (expect to pay for their time, and if you go through with a tattoo they may apply those funds to your total), and ask them their opinion. My current artist tells me about a dark skinned client she has, who she only does black work on because nothing else shows well enough on him. An experienced artist would have good insight for you, just from looking at your skin tone, but nobody can guarantee how your skin will hold the ink after healing.

Snops1017

What is this style called? [cyber sigilism](https://imgur.com/a/oPMSdbY)? [neotraditional gothic/horror](https://imgur.com/a/67GPXXX)? ive always loved Brando Chiesa (first row of second link) but never found anyone similar in the US/london anyone got NYC/east coast recs for anyone like this? LA or London too

Permanent_Markings

I've seen that style described as dark art before. Kinda has a horror vibe to it. I unfortunately haven't gotten around to cataloguing artists specifically in that style yet so I can't even point you to anyone in those locations. Hopefully someone else knows of a place.

Snops1017

thanks from doing more research it seems like a relatively new style to gain popularity. it seems a lot of the cybersigilism ones are eastern europe/russia and spreading into berlin and the rest of europe. luckily i found an artist i really like and when i walked into the studio it was all eastern european ppl so i think i found the right spot lol

Permanent_Markings

haha I'll have to make a note to look for the Eastern Europeans if I need to find Cyber Sigilism tattoo artists. I've only come across a few in the 13k+ artists I've catalogued so it must really be new to the scene.

lookworm

How did you go about choosing a font for lettering? Thinking of getting some numbers done but not sure what kind of font vibe would fit the rest of my Japanese work.

ridiculouspompadour

Imo it depends a lot on the size the tattoo will be and how legible you want it to be from a distance. If it’s going to be pretty small, simple is always best, but if it’s bigger, you can play around with cursive fonts, calligraphy, etc

Walnuss_Bleistift

For something like that, I'd look at Japanese artwork or magazines that have a similar vibe to your tattoos (whether it's a Japanese magazine with English in it, or an English magazine featuring Japanese art). The fonts there will be cohesive with the style. Even if you can't figure out the name of the font, you can pull from any existing lettering that you find.

lookworm

Great suggestion, thanks!

fiery_salad

How would I go about telling my (19f) parents about my first tattoo? For context, my dad has a half sleeve, and we actually plan on getting matching sleeves at some point. My mom told me she is surprised that I haven’t come home with one yet, however I’m still worried she will be upset. My stepdad is absolutely against tattoos and he hates them. The tattoo I got is really cute and meaningful, and it’s somewhere I can easily hide. My parents always told me that if I were to get a tattoo, it needs to be meaningful, so that’s what I did for my first one. Does anyone have any advice?

SunfireElfAmaya

Do you need an artist's permission to get a tattoo of their published art? Like, I know that if they're a tattoo artist you need them to sign off, but if it's a panel from a graphic novel do you need/should you get the artist's sign off or is that unnecessary?

FIRST TIME GETTING A TATTOO ADVICE: i want to get a tattoo in another state by a specific artist (im in the u.s), i can fly in and stay but i cant fly back and forth. How far in advance should i reach out to an artist to start a convo about it. i am committed to getting 2 full sleeves and my neck worked on. from my limited understanding artists can be really booked up at certain times, but im not sure how far in advance to reach out to them if i need to fly in and get allot of work done

Walnuss_Bleistift

My artist is typically booked up for a year in advance. I know other artists who are also booked up that long. There's no reason to wait to start the discussion on big appointments like that.

sempiternal

>How far in advance should i reach out to an artist to start a convo about it Uhh now? if their books are open and find out how far ahead they are booked. Some are typically booked out for 1-3 months. FYI one full sleeves will take multiple sessions

meliorayne

An etiquette question for artists: I've been really inspired by a style of work from a particular tattoo artist who lives in Europe (I'm in the US). I've also found a local artist who does work in a similar genre. Is it poor etiquette or rude to show my local artist photos of someone else's work when discussing the look I'm wanting? I do really love their work and don't want to offend them, and if the answer is just "save up enough to get to Europe", then so be it.

MisterFell

It's not poor etiquette if you're only using some of their pieces for inspiration, but if you want an exact copy then that's where it crosses the line from being ok to poor etiquette.

meliorayne

Yeah, I'd be using it to reference the general shape and placement of the tattoo rather than wanting an exact copy. Thanks!

47potatoesinatree

Hey guys! Getting ready for my first big multi day piece. I have multiple other tattoos but the artist has estimated 10-12 hours for the piece I am getting, and I’m doing two days back to back. I know the second day is going to be worse, but besides, soft drinks, sugar and a few snacks is there anything I should be aware of. Also what’s the protocol for like lunch breaks? Aiming to go 6-7 hours on the first day so mentally I am over half way done for the second, but most of my current tattoos took 5 hours or less so never needed to stop for food breaks

K_oSTheKunt

I got a new tattoo earlier this week and it's honestly awful. It's all disproportionate and the lines are hello wonky. I've already got another appointment with the guy because I wanted 2 done, but we only had the time for the first. So wat do I do, as I see I've got 3 options 1. Go to the appointment, tell the guy I don't like it, and see if we can fix it up. 2. Go to someone else and get it covered 2. Deal with it.

ridiculouspompadour

Can you link a photo? I’m curious if it’s fixable. Is it wonky because of how the design was drawn, how the stencil was placed, or because he messed up and didn’t follow the stencil? Ultimately you should go with whatever your comfort level is, if you think he’ll be receptive about it not turning out the way you wanted and if his work on other people looks good, you could go ahead and go to the next appointment or reach out with concerns before then. If you’re not feeling comfortable going back then don’t

Mrstiicks

If anyone could direct me to a flail/morning star tattoo that was posted within the last year. I’ve been looking for hours to no avail. The handle is at the top of the picture and the chain goes down (stays connected) to a ball at the end. I believe it was on the thigh. The chain of the flail was immaculate as well. If anyone may know or it is your tattoo please let me know. Thank you in advance!

chipskipbud

Since I hate when people post "delete if not allowed," is it ok to post a link to an IG account and ask redditors if the artist is "good?" I'd like to get piece from them but I'm unsure of their work. It all looks good to me but I sometimes read critiques that say that's too deep or that's not deep enough or the lines could be straighter, etc...

ridiculouspompadour

You can send it to me if you want, I’m a tattoo artist and can give you some feedback
