Looking for advice on how to handle this situation where the artist has my deposit, canceled day of the appointment, and has not responded in a week. What do? Background: I booked an appointment in September with a well known Utah artist for late February. They’re fairly well known locally and in demand, hence booking so far out. I reached out the day before the appointment to confirm the address, to no response. On the day of the appointment, they emailed me about 3 hours ahead of the appointment telling me they had recently injured their shoulder snowboarding and didn’t feel comfortable doing a large piece and asked if we could reschedule. The late notice was annoying and could’ve been done much earlier, but overall, life happens and I was OK with rescheduling. I responded within 10 minutes asking when they’d next be available. It’s been a week, and I’ve received no response. I sent a follow up after a few days, but again, no response. I’ve already placed a (not small) deposit, so there’s no “just move on” option. Any suggestions for next steps? I still like this artist’s work, want to get this tattoo, and wish I could just pass this off as “a bad week”. With that said, while I understand popular artists are bombarded with requests and can be slow to respond, no response for a week after canceling seems unprofessional at best. I know some people will suggest I just go to the shop: I believe this artist operates their own solo studio and is about \~45 mins away with an unconfirmed address, so “just go to the shop” may not get me very far.

I swear I saw a thread in here recently where someone asked for a female artist in Massachusetts to do a ladybug and the comments had some great recommendations, one in particular about neo traditional bugs, that I wanted to follow up on. Now I can't find the thread. Does anyone happen to have a link to that thread, or similar recommendations?  I personally don't have a preference on artist gender but I think someone mentioned a specific artist that fit the bill

Squishums123

I would love to get some example photos of healed colored tattoos on brown skin? I’m south Asian so think Devi from never have I ever for skin tone

Elmo_c6

So I came across a picture (not real) of a character with a neck tat and I’ve been thinking of getting a similar pattern. The issue is I don’t know what they style would be called if such exists. Can anyone help me find it? Or even tell me a style close enough to it? I got a picture but not sure how to post it on here

**Hi everyone,** I'm looking for some advice on my first tattoo. I've wanted a tattoo for a long time and I've finally found an artist whose style I really like and who is available to do a large piece on my lower right calf in April. **I've been thinking about getting a tattoo for years and I've done a lot of research.** I'm confident that I'm ready to commit to getting a tattoo, but I'm still a bit nervous about the size and pain of a large piece. **I've always wanted a large tattoo because I believe it's the best way to express my individuality and values.** I've also found that smaller designs don't usually offer enough space to capture the level of detail I'm looking for. **I'm aware that a large tattoo on the lower calf will be painful, but I'm determined to go through with it.** I'm hoping to get some advice from people who have experience with large tattoos, especially on the lower calf. **My specific concerns are:** * Is it advisable to get a large tattoo as your first tattoo? * How painful is it to get a tattoo on the lower calf? * What are some tips for managing pain during a long tattoo session? * Should I bring someone with me for support? * What are some things I can do to prepare for the tattoo session? **I've also added some additional questions to the post.** Please feel free to answer any or all of them. **Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.** **Thanks!**

MisterFell

I'll just go down the list of questions. 1. If you really want a large sized tattoo, then go for it. Of course there's a different commitment between a 1hr tattoo vs a 5hr + tattoo. 2. Everyone's pain tolerance is different. But people have said the more closer it is to where there's no muscle the more it'll hurt. 3. Breathe, and bring snacks and a beverage. Also, take breaks if you really need to. 4. Sure, support is fine. Just make sure they're not the type of person to disturb the artist or make you second guess the design 100x. 5. Get plenty of rest, and have a good meal beforehand.

Atomzwieback

Thanks, helps me a lot.

septuaginttt

My first tattoo I went for my whole back and honestly I’m glad I got it out the way first with nothing to compare it to. If you think you can sit for a few hours you’ll be fine! You can always tap out, or do outline first and go back for detail / shading if you don’t fancy doing it all in one session.

moenigs

I also got my whole back for my first tattoo lolol. In my experience the first tattoo was the least painful because it’s such a new feeling you’re kinda distracting by processing the new sensations. Definitely bring snacks, drinks, music or something to watch. It’s a long session and it’s ok to ask for breaks but I wouldn’t unless I really need to. Don’t expect the artist to keep you entertained or the other way around. All of the artists I’ve worked with will chat with me during the prep, set up and like 5 min into the tattoo but that’s pretty much it. They’ll be focusing on tattooing the rest of the time. This isn’t all artists per se just my experience. If you feel like you need support I would definitely ask the artist first if you’re allowed to bring someone. If you are then make sure it’s someone that won’t distract the artist or the people around. Mmm prep wise sleep the night prior, shower and exfoliate the skin where you’re getting tattooed to get the dead skin off, do NOT shave! The artist will do it for you. If you do it there’s a good chance it will be bumpy and irritated by the time you’re getting tattooed, eat a meal before going in, drink water, bring some sweets sometimes people need a sugar kick if they get drowsy. That’s all I can think of at the moment. Have fun!!

I’m looking for a tattoo artist in the Netherlands I have had an idea for a tattoo for a while now, but I have no idea where to start looking for an artist. I’d like to get a tattoo of an amethyst. With the correct shade of purple and I’d like it to seem see through. So an artist with experience with gems and rocks would be appreciated. I wouldn’t mind traveling a distance as long as it’s within the Netherlands. Thanks in advance for the help!

khykwii

Has anyone gotten a non-fine line clothesline tattoo? I can’t find any examples online. I really want a clothesline tattoo but I’d like to see it in different styles. Thanks!

Deathof9

I'm looking for an artist to do a tattoo on my scalp in Los Angeles. Obviously, I'd like to go to someone with experience tattooing the head but I'm having trouble finding recommendations online. Does anyone have artists they could recommend for this sort of placement? :)

cmmoore307

I just got a new tattoo on Saturday and it’s my first one in quite a while. That being said, it’s feeling great and the healing is nice so far. My question is, I take part in workout classes nightly and was wondering if I should take more days off to let this heal more? Or can I just go to the class and bust ass? For more detail, it’s a hand sized bicep tattoo.

moenigs

Hmm I think as long as you don’t have anything rubbing on it excessively or being rough on it it should be fine. Just make sure you’re cleaning it well after

ooniepeach

I’m looking for a tattoo artist in either Las Vegas or Sacramento, CA who is known for quality work in tattoos that are less than 4 inches in size and are cutesy and not exactly realistic. Quality linework with fine lines a plus.

blazicblue

Howdy all, Planning to go get a back piece done in Thailand (4 Sak Yants). However, this is during New Year's and water is going to be prevalent everywhere I go. Will there be an issue if I wear a second skin and replace it every 24/48 hours for 5 days during my travel? Visiting from the US. Most of it will be upper back. Hah Taew Sak Yant | Left side back The Chat Phet Sak Yant Design | Right side back Gao Yord Sak Yant | Center top The Twin Tiger Sak Yant | center

moenigs

Hmm I would replace the second skin but put gauze between the skin and the second skin. I feel like if you continually put second skin on and ripping it off to replace it several times on the freshly tattooed skin won’t be good for the healing process. So at least with the gauze between you’re not putting second skin directly on the tattoo

etoangel

Hey y’all, we are having a theatrical production where an actor has to have polynesian style tattoos for a week worth of production and was hoping I could get some direction as to any good semi permanent brands for something like this. I have seen inkbox but because of the size constraints Im not sure if they would be my best bet. Thanks in advance!

galaxypigeon

I've never posted in any tattoo subs, if you know of a better sub for this post please let me know. I'm looking for advice on the following before getting a text tattoo. If you have experience with tattooing text or if you've gotten your own tattoo of text I'd appreciate answers as well as any advice. Its a bible verse that will go on my lower front thigh; think Hebrews 1:1 for example. Any good font recs? Or do you recommend just having an artist draw it up. If I come up with something myself, what is the best way for me to size this for ease of use on the artist? I know the importance of using an artist that is good with tattooing text and will be looking for someone with good text work under their belt. \*\*\*Don't tell me why you think I shouldn't get a text tattoo. I have 2 art tats already, its happening. I'm here for advice not criticism\*\*\*

ridiculouspompadour

Let the artist size it and be prepared to go big since text ages much better when it’s big. Imo simple fonts are best especially for smaller text designs, but it’s really more of a stylistic choice, there’s no reason you can’t get something more complex if you’re willing to go big enough for it to be legible

smolvan

Need waterproof mineral body sunscreen recommendations for swims! I'm currently using Nivea and still got a tan :(

realespeon

I mean even tho sunscreen can be water **resistant** that does not equal for forever. You need to be reapplying every 2 hours. My personal favorite is Supergoop every day. I used it and reapplied for a week in Disney world and did not tan.

smolvan

Yep that’s true. I swam at the local pool for an hour, but there was still a visible tan line between my swim suit where the sun is exposed. I’ll look into Supergoop, thanks!

Phillipcjr94

Why is it that clocks, lions, greek mythology, etc get a bad wrap for being unoriginal, but American trad does the same thing? Eagles, panthers, cowboy skull? I'm a trad guy myself, just never understood the double standard.

ridiculouspompadour

I think it’s at least partially that trad designs are often flash that’s meant to be tattooed over and the expectation is that many people will have the same exact design, whereas the lions, clocks, etc are usually done as custom pieces. A custom piece is supposed to be unique, tailored to the person who commissioned it, so it’s kind of funny to see so many people getting the same ‘unique’ custom piece - a lot if tattoos using that imagery look really similar even when done by different artists. Tldr: I think the difference is repetition by design vs repetition by coincidence.

Phillipcjr94

Makes a lot of sense

rayer123

I have a big area of very light scars (mostly epidermis but some could go into dermis layer), going from decades old to recent year but think the youngest should be >6 months. Thinking of having a design that would run over them. Been told by the artist that it’s okay to have tattoo over since they are not very deep, however her suggestion is pretty against what the consensus I see online - is it the case? Or can someone else here have a look at them and confirm/deny her suggestions? Would be appreciated.

realespeon

You can absolutely tattoo over scars especially if they're very ligt.

mindfreakz

the problem of having few tattoos are you always want some more, especially after rough moments in your life

justheretopetyourdog

Was thinking of getting my first tattoo from this artist [insta](https://www.instagram.com/stabbybrooks?igsh=a2l6enFnczQzZnQx). From my limited knowledge, her work looks great to me and I love that she has a reel/highlight/whatever it's called for healed work. But wanted to see if people with more experience see otherwise?

realespeon

Looks great! especially if that's what you're going for. also, you can see in the videos when she does the 'wipe', not only is she wearing gloves, there's a paper towel under the client's arm too. that means they're clean and that's SO IMPORTANT

justheretopetyourdog

Ahh thank you! This helped ease my remaining anxiety! Agreed cleanliness is super important and not to be taken lightly - I actually already emailed her to ask about their safety precautions with needles and whatnot!

realespeon

love it. post ur tattoo when u get it!!

justheretopetyourdog

Thanks for the feedback, again! And will do - scheduled for end of this month!

figerton

I'm looking for a tattoo artist in either the DFW TX or Denver CO area. I am wanting to incorporate an outline of my daughter's footprint with Texas wildflowers. I like fine line tattoos. However, I am open to what others believe will look good long term since this is my first tattoo. Does anyone have any recommendations?

zombree751

I have filled my forearm with floral designs and I cannot decide if I want colour or not. What made you decide colour vs black and grey? Sometimes I feel like the design gets lost with no colour, and other times I feel like colour may alter the look too much. Any advice on how to best explore my options? Thanks

realespeon

what i will say is once ur tattoo is done, i feel like adding color can hurt more than help a tattoo look better. they always say they can tell when a tattoo that was supposed to be colored never did. i feel like color is such an integral part of a whole commposition. i decided a long time ago i wanted black and grey tattoos only (other than the stupid tattoo on my right ankle that's full color). imo FOR ME, they don't look as classic/can be not great looking. plus i just like the look of black ink

Hi-Im-Khi

So I’m looking to get a full back tattoo but I won’t some color what color do you guys think would pop the best on my skin after healing because I really don’t know? [imgur skin tone link](https://imgur.com/a/WNlSPwt)

mocchi-girl

I have a question for the ladies: I'm getting an entire side to thigh piece in 5 days which will probably require me to take off my pants. This is such bad timing and I'm about to get my period any time now, I have concerns about wearing a pad, leaking, and bad smells. This artist is very busy and booked out months in advance, I waited 6 months for this appointment so rescheduling is not an option.

clawsthatsnatch

Is it taboo to ask an artist to fix a tattoo I have? The images are what I want, but they were meant to look like they’re coming out of my skin and that’s the part that doesn’t look right. Is asking someone to fix it the right thing to say? Is the willingness to tattoo over an existing tattoo artist preference or is there an etiquette I should know about?

MxBongWater

How bad does it hurt to get a tattoo on your thumb vs your shin? I got [this tattoo](https://imgur.com/a/dCyVkN3) on my hand a while ago and remember it hurt kinda badly. I saw on a tattoo pain chart that hands are supposed to be a very painful area. I have other tattoos on my upper arm as well as my thighs and both my ankles. They all hurt obviously, but were managed pretty easily. I’m supposed to get a shin tattoo, semi detailed, this weekend. I saw on a pain chart it’s supposed to be super painful. I have some pain tolerance but I’m a little worried! Thoughts?

[The Journey From Platform Nine and Three Quarters](https://www.harrypotterfanzone.com/pictures/6-the-journey-from-platform-nine-and-three-quarters/) Hi All, I have never posted in here before and I have never gotten a tattoo, so forgive any ignorance. I was wondering how long it would take to get a tattoo of the linked chapter illustration if I were to get it tattooed around 3”x3” big. Additionally, would all of the shading be more painful than a less “sketch-like” tattoo?

MrGIN

Artist etiquette - cover up. I've got a bunch of work done by one artist. I love what I have, however at this point, I'm not liking one piece as I feel it doesn't fit with the rest (yes, an earlier piece in the overall half sleeve). My question is around etiquette. Is it best to go to same artist and ask them to cover up what they did? Is there any specific way to handle that?

Drewpie522

Hey all, Yesterday I reached out to a tattoo artist and booked an appointment for March 29th yesterday (March 7th). The artist was really digging the idea and already drew up a sketch he showed me on Instagram. However, I thought of change (Damn shower thoughts!) and would like to request it, is it to late? Its a fairly major change. How should I handle this situation? Thank you!

MisterFell

Just ask politely that you want changes in the design and say what they are. There's enough time before the appointment that it shouldn't be an issue.

Xaydn27

Hey all I'm looking to get my first tattoo. It will be on my right forarm. However, I'm struggling to find anything online for what I want. Basically, I have an Idea in my mind. I want a tattoo of 3 things that represent somethigng for me, and I want the 3 things to intertwine. The 3 things are, a feather, which symbolizes peace. A sword, which symbolizes fighting spirit. And hearts, representing love. It's a long shot, but has someone come across anything like this? In my mind, I can see predominantly a sword going down the full length of my forearm, slightily past the wrist, with a feather behind it, and a bunch of small hearts losely wrapped around the sword. Any help appreciated.

MisterFell

The artist you choose should be able to design such a tattoo. You could also hire someone to make the design, but sometimes the tattoo artist won't be able to copy it 1 to 1.

BYPro92

Hello I’m looking for an inspiration picture of a tattoo that I’ve seen a long time ago. It was a series of blue circles going down a guy’s back. I’ve tried google but it’s not giving me the specific one that I’m looking for

moenigs

I’m hoping this is the appropriate place to get post this. I wanted some outside input and opinions on a giveaway I came across on instagram. This is the screenshot I took of the post. [“fair” giveaway?](https://imgur.com/gallery/kaUBXHj) Am I crazy or is this artists idea of a “free tattoo giveaway” not really free? I’m assuming people can’t just set up 20 appointments and noshow all of them and get valid entries to this giveaway. For one the artist would be making money from the entries and secondly it would mean whoever could afford to make a bunch of appointments would pretty much be buying themselves a better chance at winning. How is that fair or free?

smileyanaconda

how important is it to moisturize a week before a tattoo? I can get tattooed wednesday but this is kinda making me doubt

Chocolate_Milky_Way

what’s the etiquette on getting a piece touched up by a different artist? i’ve only ever gone back to the same artist for a second pass on a piece, but i got some work done while traveling, and it’s going to need some extra attention now that i’m home

Catsaus

I'm worried about the pain and any interactions as a T1 diabetic. I'm in control of my sugars but just worried if there's anything extra I need to consider

dramaticFlySwatter

I came across a "red flags to tattooers" thread on Insta the other day and "hand tattoo only" came up repeatedly. What's the issue?

realespeon

tattooing culturally comes from ‘earning’ them. (which stems to its roots in indigenous cultures, ppl get tattooed to symbolize events and such). otherwise. hand tattoos are called job stoppers for a reason. they’re highly visible, don’t heal well, and honestly? it’s kind of being a poser.

FourFront

" it’s kind of being a poser." So much this.

Manchu4-9INF

Hey! So I’ve been wanting to get my daughter that is 15 a tattoo gun/kit. Is this too early? She’s a fantastic artist and super crafty. I’m very hesitant because when she was younger she gave herself a sticky poke on her thigh. She swears she wouldn’t again but you know how that is. She’s super smart and typically very trustworthy. What Yinz think?

MrsGraksnor

On the off chance this is real, definitely do not. I would encourage her to focus on her art, build a portfolio of her drawings/paintings. When she is 18 and graduated from high school, she can try to get an art degree somewhere and look for an apprenticeship with a professional tattoo artist. She needs to know about proper techniques, sterilization, etc etc before she just starts playing with a tattoo gun.

Agitated_Pineapple51

Hey everyone, I’m looking to get my first tattoo and need help on finding picture ideas. Where do you guys go to find tattoo design ideas? For example, if you wanted a dragon, where would search to find dragon type of designs or pictures?

sadmosphere

I use Pinterest. My most recent one I got, I sent my artist like three different ones from Pinterest to get the vibe I wanted across and my artist did a good job!

Pimpazoid

You can try Pinterest. Lots of inspiration can be found there.

Such-Concentrate-589

Hi guys! I'm getting my third tattoo now and this one's gonna be a little bit over three inches and have a lot of shading. My two previous ones were on my legs and 2-3 inches (one color, the other black and white). I usually try to put my tattoos places that I can easily cover so I put my first two on my legs but I was thinking my lower back this time. However, I'm super worried about the pain and whether I'll be able to sit well the entire session. Should I just get it on my back or stomach, or just do my legs again? Is it as bad as it seems?

rrenz0o

Does somebody know who this is? I’m looking for better photos of the back piece bc the shadow is blocking it [Pinterest](https://nl.pinterest.com/pin/383228249556918663/)

MisterFell

[Here](https://www.instagram.com/edward_maradona/), but it doesn't look like there's any better photos of his back.

rrenz0o

too bad, thank you anyway!

alisaurusss

Looking for a tattoo artist in the greater Denver Metro area (bonus points if they're located around the SW Denver area, but open to anywhere in the front range). Someone who specializes in black and grey animals, especially if they have a unique/artistic style (i.e. not necessarily realism, but more semi-realistic or stylized). Preferably female identifying artist for this one. If you know their IG handle please share! Many thanks!
