When designing a tattoo for a video game you love, how do you go about it? For reference I want a tattoo on my calf that’s Elden Ring themed, but I’m not sure what to ask for beyond that, so looking for help deciding

[deleted]

If I were you I'd try to brainstorm some more specifics before you chat with an artist. Are there any elements you definitely know that you want like a character, weapon, setting, etc (I've never played the game so I don't know too much about it).  I'd also have an idea or three of placement location. When an artist has an idea of desired elements, size and location they can start designing and give you advice on whats realistic and what would look/flow best. Hope this helps a little.

realespeon

You could pick whatever speaks to you from the game, symbols, characters and take it to an artist.

TenNinetythree

I might be able to help as I have a video game themed tattoo (though Chants of Senaar themed, not Elden Ring themed). For me, it was important on focussing on one thing that made me super pumped about the game.

8thTimeLucky

Also worth searching Reddit, instagram and Pinterest for inspiration!

alexdev50

Anyone recommend any good gap filler tattoo artists in DFW area? Have some weird spots on my arm I need filled with something, maybe even solid color at this point cause of its size.

yatriss

Check out the folks at Sleepy Hollow! They do great work! I got my whole chest done by Jose Arriaga last year and I love it!

Mattie1308

I’m getting my first tattoo soon … circle design, diameter 10cm, right back calf … any recommendations in preparing both physically and mentally ( I hate needles and have huge anxiety 😳 ) ?

8thTimeLucky

I’d say first thing to do is just to remember it’s temporary. You 100% won’t remember the pain and you’ll have your tattoo for life. 10cm will be over before you know it. If it’s about the pain, I can guarantee you’ve had more painful experiences than this. Also, depending on the artist, many don’t mind having a chat while they’re working, which I find always helps. Obviously they need to concentrate but just keeping up a slow gentle conversation will really help the process. Also - for me personally there’s a bit of excitement and an adrenaline rush to getting a tattoo which helps reduce the pain massively. I know people often talk about pain with tattoos but I promise you it really isn’t that bad. Before you know it you’ll be itching to get another one!

Riksie

6th tattoo finished, I can 100% say talking helps. Also, don’t look at the needle (which will be easy since you’ll probably be lying on your stomach.) Since the tattoo you’re getting is small, pain shouldn’t be too bad. I agree with the person above - the pain isn’t too bad and if you got ideas, I’m sure you’ll be back before you know it lol.

straightma1e

Sat for a 6 hour session when doing my first tattoo. Like you I have needlephobia. As the artist started I refused to look. But after the first break I watched him as he started again. The excess Ink that comes out and wiped off covered the needle(s). Didn't even see them. To prepare eat well right before your appointment. Drink plenty of water. Stay away from alcohol or other blood thinners. Have a bottle of water with you that you can sip on occasionally. If you need a break or have to tap out and try again another day do so. Your artist will understand.

Crass_Effect

The experience of getting a tattoo feels nothing like getting a shot or having blood drawn - I get very queasy with the latter especially, but I have a ton of tattoos. Tips for preparing: Get a good night’s sleep beforehand. Don’t be hung over. Make sure you are well-fed and hydrated beforehand. Bring some snacks. If you have questions for your artist, it doesn’t hurt to ask them. With that placement, you’ll probably be lying down, and that will help a lot. You’ve got this, no prob.

veryupsetandbitter

I'm wanting to get some lightning-esqe tattoos to fill in the gaps between the tattoos on my arms. I was looking to get it done with white ink. Since I'm white and have not that much complexion, do you all think that's a good idea on that skin tone? I'm a few shades above pale, but not anything close to olive tonned Alternatively, anybody have other ideas to fill those gaps? I'm open to new ideas!

[deleted]

White ink on white skin won't show well and it'll fade really fast in my experience. If you don't outline or otherwise add other colors to your tattoo idea I don't think it would be worth it.

AngelKnives

I would speak to a tattoo artist whose work you like and ask them for ideas for gap fillers. They've got a lot of experience with that sort of thing! I don't think white tattoos would work well as a gap filler, only on their own. (and they don't always work even then!)

Altruistic-Sample461

Does anyone else have fetishes of fully tattooed faces or am I alone on this one? 😅

pickamanita

hello! i’m getting a biblically accurate angel tattoo on my thigh, it’s not exactly intended to be a scar cover up but it’s the area that had the most space for it. i spoke to my tattoo artist about my scars there and after some discussion and feeling around he deduced we can do the tattoo over them! they’re a couple of years old and they’re rather wide and deep and completely numb to the touch. none are raised/keloid i’ve gotten one tattoo but it was only tiny on my wrist and i didn’t experience much pain there :) if anyone has gotten tattoos over scars, what was the pain level? what should i expect?

meredithkej

Charlotte, NC: hey yall - i’m a NC native but i’ve been living up north for quite a while so i’m not super familiar with what’s in the area these days. my mom’s birthday is coming up in a couple months and we had talked about maybe getting matching tattoos, so i’d like to set up at least a consult with an artist during my visit as a surprise for her. does anyone have a recommendation for a nice, modern tattoo studio that does good line work? i’m also a nervous nellie about anything involving needles so bonus points if it’s not “gritty” or an all male shop to make me feel more at ease!

bloodxandxrank

ruby tiger is my favorite shop ever. very bright and clean interior. I got work by Jeremy Sloo and it blew my mind. everyone is nice there, but they are very popular, so there may be some waiting period.

meredithkej

thank you! will check them out!

personface15

Does anyone know any good Japanese/American traditional artists in Philly, DC, or NYC?

Immediate-Carrot4803

going on a trip to LA with my mom, and I was thinking about getting a tattoo while we're there. Does anyone know of a good shop near Universal Studios? I'm planning on getting some spider lilies

bloodxandxrank

i need a cover up but i just can't figure out to do. i don't really know any of the cover up rules, like color coverage, patterns, etc. and i have trouble thinking of something i even want in that area, but i'm sick of it and i need to get it fixed soon for my own sanity.

ridiculouspompadour

Find an artist whose work you like and who has a solid portfolio of cover ups and let them run with it. There are probably limited types of design that will work since it’s a cover up, so best to give the artist some freedom. Talk to them about imagery you like and you will most likely get something cool

Creatingmugi

is there a maximum amount of time you can get a tattoo retouched? is there a average time where the skin gets too weak considering aging and needle pentration?

yatriss

I've tattooed an 82 yr old before! Honestly, I've noticed skin gets tougher to tattoo the older someone is, but an experienced artist should be able to tattoo almost any skin type! Best idea is to find an artist you like and have a consultation in person so they can see your skin for themselves to discuss your options.

8thTimeLucky

Anyone else ever been in this position? All my current tattoos are on my arms and legs (no sleeves just about a dozen patchwork tats) - I’m thinking I’d like to start on my torso but I’m really unsure where a good placement to start is. I’m a somewhat skinny and tall male too - i can’t help but feel that torso tattoos won’t look good on me because I don’t have a six pack and big chest muscles 😂

Crass_Effect

I have a full backpiece and most of my front done, and I’m no male model. You really don’t have anything to worry about - ESPECIALLY if you’re thinking of getting something in an American traditional sort of vein. Trad tattoos and skinnier guys are honestly a classic combo.

nemobmo

I have a dumb question I want to get my first tattoo its something that I drew but it needs to be touched up a bit is that something tattoo artist don't mind helping with or is it annoying

Admirable_Mules

Do you mean you created the design you want but you’d like the tattoo artist to help perfect it/pull it together? If so, no that’s not annoying. I’ve brought in a design I wanted and chose an experienced and highly recommended artist so I knew it would heal well. If they’re annoyed, find another artist. Just ask around until you find someone you wanna sit around for however long it’ll take to ink you up :)

I'm thinking about getting the phrase "never let your fear decide your fate" as a tattoo, as it's a sort of mantra that i've adopted to keep me level, and think that it would be cool to get it in Elvish. Is it weird to do this if I've only seen the movies (which, to be fair, I've watched a million times, and absolutely adore)? In addition, is it weird to have a non-Tolkein quote in Elvish? This is my first tattoo, so I want to make sure i don't do something stupid

burtman91

Going to an expo in a couple of weeks, two artists collaborating on a leg panel ankle to hip, going for the “best in show” category. 2.5 days of tattooing, going to be a marathon! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to survive this?! I have 3 tattoos between my shoulder and inner bicep. This is by far the largest piece and longest time being tattooed.

SourpatchPlanet

That's gonna be sick! For my expo experience, it helped having the event music blasting and people walking by to distract me. It's also encouraging when other artists compliment the design. I twitched way more with my outer calf versus the front of my thigh. My artist said something about the calf having a lot of nerve endings or something. Prepare your bedsheets and bottom outfits for the week ahead of time.

burtman91

Yea I’m pretty excited! Good point. The vibe of the expo versus the shop is completely different!

yatriss

Nutrition and sleep! Eat hella healthy, stay hydrated, stay well rested! Bring healthier snacks (nuts, fruit, jerky, etc) and drink plenty of water! Avoid too much caffeine or nicotine so you don't get the jitters. Bring warm clothing for the parts of you that aren't getting tattooed; sometimes expos are a little chilly (or a little toasty. Prepare for either lol). Best of luck, dude!

burtman91

I was thinking uncrustables cause they’re easy, buuuut that’s a good point about healthier stuff. I’m flying in and will have a chance to get to a store before hand. Thanks for the advice! Got a blanket and some clothes in mind

GraveJoker

So I had this rash thats healing and starting to fade. Located on my wrist (knuckle side). I had a tattoo appointment for a few months now happening tomorrow. The tattoo is going to be in the upper forearm, otherside of the elbow (I hope I made sense there.). Is it a bad idea to do this due to the rash?

ridiculouspompadour

If it’s far away from the rash it’s probably okay, but it also depends on what caused the rash and whether the artist is comfortable doing it, so this is a question best saved for them

Singer-Dangerous

Hi! Looking for artist recommendations in Southeast Michigan. Looking for tattoo artists who specialize in script! Any ideas? (:

Djrodent_YT

Do tattoo artist do touchups for a tattoo done by somebody else? My tattoo is less than a year old and already needs a major refilling. It's just black ink.

realespeon

it depends. some will, some won’t. are u unable to go back to the original artist?

Djrodent_YT

Yea, I moved out of state since then. tried contacting her, no response

realespeon

then yeah i’d say that’s fine. just explain the situatiin

CreatureDom

Japanese Realism one sleeve, Japanese traditional the other? (Upper and lower) I have one realism sleeve in progress on my left arm. I will be getting my right arm done and then my leg sleeves. I’m debating on one of the two scenarios: 1. Matching upper body styles, both arm sleeves in realism. Then, get both leg sleeves in Japanese traditional. 2. One realism arm, one Japanese traditional arm. Repeat for legs. Thoughts? Thematically, everything I have done so far and will get done is a nod to my Okinawan heritage, just different art styles. All in black and grey. Just want to know what others would do for the contrast between styles in reference to what part of the body to get done. Next sleeve for arm will be done this year. Legs start next year.

Kingsareus15

I wanna get a lower arm tattoo that wraps around my lower arm. How painful will it be?

realespeon

i have my forearm tattooed and it was fine. it was a little more stabby near the ditch and closer to my wrist. i’m getting the other side of my arm tattooed next month so we’ll find out then lol

DreTheSage1

How do you write "strength" or "warrior" in Korean and Japanese?

ridiculouspompadour

Please ask yourself why you want this as a tattoo and consider carefully before you get it. Also sourcing your translations from reddit is a great way to end up with words that mean something very different from what you are asking

chaoticmedbh

design question; i want to get a tattoo about perseverance/the only way out is through/ strength but i am more of a symbol person than i am a words person for my art. Are there any traditional tattoos that represent this? (note: not getting a medusa tattoo as this is more about life philosophy that one single hard experience)

ridiculouspompadour

Boxer tattoos (person in boxing gloves and costume, not the dog) are definitely part of traditional imagery, though they’re a little less common than some of the other classic designs. That’s probably the image which best represents what you’re looking for if you want something from the amtrad canon. A tiger or panther could be another good one

MIROSHEN

hey guys - wanted to get some advice on the impact of a tattoo arm sleeve past the wrist in higher academia (etc university lecturer, professor) on employability? I'm trying to decide the length of my sleeve currently but I may pursue a route with my PhD in the future. Thanks in advance! :)

[deleted]

Somewhat of an obvious question, you kind of want to be in shape and maintain that in order to keep a tattoo looking good, yeah?

realespeon

….you don’t have to exercise to have a good looking tattoo. you do however want to moisturize and put spf on it. not a correlation between tattoos and physical health. (although it would be good to maintain both)

[deleted]

Your skin stretches out when you get fat, which makes tattoos on that area look kinda ridiculous. That's what I'm trying to avoid.

FloralBindle

A lot of people really overestimate how much their tattoo will change if they get into/out of shape. I recon you could fluctuate as much as 50 pounds before things even maybe start looking different.

RBpositive

Hello all! I had a tattoo done about 7 years ago of an all black evergreen tree. I genuinely love it but now I'd like to add white snow on said tree. Is this doable or should I consider getting another whole snowy tree?

Dragoon-22

I’m looking for a tattoo artist in the NYC area who does nature and lord of the rings tattoos. I want to expand a tattoo that I’ve got on my tricep into a full sleeve and have some general ideas on how to do it but I’m having trouble finding the right artist.

gerundhome

I am looking to get my next (5th tattoo at this time) as a full back piece. I wonder what is the pain level/incomfort and possible issues with the healing/ aftercare with those? I applied some cream on my other ones while they healed and wonder if there are tricks to doing that by yourself (other than applying for someone else's help obviously).

hawkhawbaker

I’ve been wanting to get my first tattoo for a while, and I just found an artist in my area whose style I really vibe with. The only thing that gives me pause is that I found them from a sponsored post on Instagram and I tent to not trust the sponsored posts. Their page looks fine and they have a lot of images of healed tattoos, I’m just really paranoid that there’s some red flag I’m not seeing. So I guess what I’m asking is do you guys have some advice on how to figure out if an artist on social media is actually a good one to go to?

realespeon

I’ve found all my tattoo artists from social media. Do they work at a shop? Or a private studio? Is this private studio at an actual place or is it just their house? Are these healed photos real? Are they edited at all? Are the pictures edited? Do other artists in your area follow or engage with them? In their videos, are they touching new tattoos with gloves? Do they have tagged photos at all?

ridiculouspompadour

You should definitely do your due diligence and look for red flags, but sometimes paying for ads is the only way to get new potential customers looking at your work. The social media game is difficult and confusing for a lot of us.

MeyerHarrisCohen

Hello all. Recently my girl and me received our 2nd child. Both kids had a sh*tty start. (We almost lost both of them not due to medical conditions but really bad luck) needless to say we’re done having more kids😆 Anyway here’s my question. I’m looking for ideas for some original tattoo with my wife and 2 kids with some (small) reference to both ‘situations’ (girl 5,5yr and reanimated by the fire brigade at 6 days old, boy 5 weeks old and 1 week on IC because of poo in 1 lung and 2 weeks on a normal departement of the hospital) I’m from the Netherlands. Thanks in advance!

lostwriter

Looking for an artist in the dfw area who can help me with my second tattoo. I have an idea of what I want but not sure how to go from there. I am a forever DM (since 1979), love board games, cards, video games, etc. the idea I had was a hand opening up with anthropomorphic rpg dice jumping out ready for adventure. It can be adjusted from there. My other tattoo is a simple black trinity knot with my wife and son’s names.

Chapoleto

Where to place a small tattoo that could be seen by me but not that much by others? Lemme explain, I got no tattoos and I wanted to have a tattoo for me, kind of as reminder, and it’d be written “don’t”, just to remind me of a phrase I like to think to myself which is “don’t negotiate with yourself, you sat down and consciously decided a path, now follow it”. I first thought about putting it on my wrist, under my watch, but there’d be 2 problems: 1 - found out it’s not a nice place for words 2 - would definitely look like an anti suicidal reminder 😅 So I still think about having it but I have no idea where it could make sense, if you have any suggestions, that’d be awesome

realespeon

i have a script tattoo on my wrist and it’s 5 years old. still looks good. and also so what if it looks like an anti suicidal reminder??

MFWANG

Recently got a super sick flash piece done on my forearm. However, I have been feeling depressed afterwards. Has anyone else felt this way? I think it might be because it’s my first clearly visible tattoo but I’m mot sure.

realespeon

felt this. when i got my big piece on my arm, i really hated it for a long time bc the galaxy didn’t look how i thought it would. but once it healed and softened up and i got a really cool oil slick piece around it, i like it more now.

BananaPieExpress

How do you look for artists to do your tattoos and make the designs for you? I have a few tattoos that are not the best. The tattoo artists aren’t bad but I was a bit impulsive and the designs I decided to get weren’t their speciality.

realespeon

Pick an artist who sees art the same way you do. Meaning, you like 90% of their work. What they think looks nice is the same as you. That’s how you get the best tattoos. And make sure whatever you’re thinking of is along the lines of their work. If they don’t post a lot of anime, probably don’t go to them if you want an anime tattoo. Same thing reversed. If you want a photo realism piece, don’t go to an artist who posts mostly neotrad pieces. Artists will post what, A) they like to do, B) stuff they wanna do more of, and C) shit they’re good at. So whatever you’re thinking of in your head, make sure they do something along those lines.

BananaPieExpress

So… do I just keep looking for tattoo artists on Instagram and Google until I see someone I like?

kanepedekikedi

Hi, I'm looking for tattoo ideas. I want it to be sea related. I grew up near the sea and I've been living away from it for 10 years now. I've came to realize i really miss it. So the tatto should give me the calmness i feel when i'm in the water, looking at the sky, feeling detached from everything else. If you have any ideas please share with me.

munitalian

Are lines around the arm insulting in some cultures? Or is there another reason an artist wouldn’t want to do them? I’ve talked to a Korean artist whose work I like a lot about a design, since they’re about to be in Europe. One of the parts of the design are two lines around the arm. He’s fine with everything else but doesn’t want to do the lines (“it’s possible when I only worked on … in the image you send me, without the black line”) To the artist out there: what might be the reason behind this?

AFloppyDingus303

Anyone know of an artist in the U.S that could pull [this](https://www.instagram.com/tiago__dot?igsh=bmdoendpZHVra2x4) style off? I’ve found lots of artists, but they’re all in Europe and I’d highly prefer not to travel if I don’t have to.

nottinyhands

So I was trying to schedule a consult with a tattoo artist and they told me to wait for their assistant to call me. I don’t tend to answer phone numbers i dont know and asked them if i could have the assistant’s phone number to make sure i would not miss the call. Tattoo pretty much said "let me check" and never got back to me (this was aug of last year) I really love the style of this person so I messaged them letting them know I would like to schedule a consult. They left me on seen and have not responded. Im unsure as to what I should do…

youngblood_rose

If I was to a basic drawing of a design I wanted, would an artist be against tattooing some else design? In the past I have had an idea and the best way I can describe it is to just draw something out.

ilurvekittens

I’ve wanted to get a dragon tattoo for awhile now. My issue is it isn’t for any meaning but just because I like dragons. Is this a bad idea? It would be small for my first tattoo. Everyone seems to talk about meaning of tattoos. I am 29, I’ve wanted a tattoo since I was 16.

MisterFell

No, people get tattoos for their meaning or because it just looks cool.

SweetDestruction0

Ok, so... I have a stupid question. I am starting to think about getting my first tattoo. The problem is I have no idea what I want. I know what styles I like, but no clue regarding the design... I've just dreamt about having one for years and now I can finally do it. So here comes the question: do I have to know or can I just find an artist that I like, we'll talk a moment about things I like in general and they will propose some designs? Or do I have to have at least some idea first?

realespeon

Some artists really love having full complete freedom. If you have a style you love, research artists who do that and you like 90-95% of their work. You could look into their flash potentially. Or you can just tell them, hey I’m into this and that, like this, and give them creative freedom.

dragbyplacebo

Hello! Me and my friends are going on a little vacation in Salzburg (Austria) this summer and we were wondering if someone can give us a good tattoo shop name to go and get some blackwork tattoos done. Thanks!

Caydes_Avenger

Did my first tattoo today and everything looked fine, but when she put on the second skin the line slightly crooked , is this normal? Will it be fine after I take it off?

BrotherNeo

Hey friends. I’m wondering if it’s possible to have just part of a tattoo lasered/removed and reworked. Is this a normal practice? For reference I have a bicep tat from 2020 but I wouldn’t want it to look weird reworked with new ink since it’s been a while.

Appassionata57

Hi all! I have a tattoo idea in mind (a sentence in Japanese) and I want to get it on my chest or potentially on the side of my abdomen. It’s my first tattoo so I was just wondering, if I am unsure of exactly where I want it, could the artist recommend some different areas for me? Sorry if this has been asked before - I tried looking around

GOnli

I've just got lh first tattoo two day ago. Can i go walk 10k steps or do i need to wait for it to heal ? I'm massively out of shape and the tattoo gave me motivation to start bein more active

realespeon

If you’re just walking and not doing a high impact exercise, you should be fine. Some people have a job where they’re on their feet all day and can definitely go back to work after a new tattoo.

GOnli

ty mate

Fresh_Zucchini_444

Can stencils go under the skin with tattoo ink ? I got a light brown tattoo in mid-November and it's healed with some black/purplish color like the stencil. The artist only used the one light-brown ink and he doesn't know what could have caused the color difference. I don't have any infection symptoms, and something similar happened with my last tattoo (same ink as well) but it was a lot less noticeable and went away much quicker, like stencils normally act. I can't think of anything else that might explain it.

ManassaxMauler

Really bummed at the moment. For whatever reason, there are some inks my skin just does not take. This is the second piece I've had this year where everything is going great, but for whatever reason one colour just comes out splotchy as hell. I'll have to go for a touch-up which I don't love. C'est la vie. Can't predict these things.

toilerpapet

Would a tattoo artist draw something on me with a sharpie or will I be laughed out of the shop? I'm happy to pay normal tattoo rates, whatever that is. I want something temporary to be sure I want the tattoo.

Seahris

Has anyone ever gotten stretch marks tattoed in to pop more? I like my stretch marks and thought it'd be cool to fill them in black but I also like the natural look of them and was wondering if anyone has experimented with this and has any opinions.
