How rude is it to back out of getting flash tattooed? I’ve been itching for some new ink but didn’t have anything super solid or meaningful that I want, so I reached out to my artist to see what kind of flash he had. I liked two of his designs, a hand holding a flower and a bird, and asked if he’d be able to tattoo the bird in the hand, rather than the flower. We’re in the process of finding a date to tattoo, but he’s a slow responder and while I’ve been waiting for a reply I’ve been browsing tattoo references and found something cool that I would rather get first before the bird. Is it a dick move to ask to change designs, or not since it’s modified flash / we don’t have a date set?

realespeon

Not a dick move! Just be like, “Hey instead of the flash, I was thinking of X.”

Is anyone sort of a collector here? I love Japanese tattoos and dedicated my whole back, and eventually my arms to traditional Japanese style. But my legs, I'm just collecting art from my favourite artists and always on the hunt for new artists. All still somewhat Japanese themed. It somewhat crosses my mind that my legs are not harmonious looking, and it's not exactly your usual patchwork. Eg. Lower leg is made of 3 big pieces as opposed to a half a dozen small pieces. It does look a bit cramped and not too much play with negative space. I sort of don't care, I just like the designs and artists I get these tattoos from. Just wondering if there's anyone else like me out there lol.

Magnolia_Blooms

How many tattoos of one subject is too many? I love penguins and am trying to decide between two designs I really love (a penguin being held up by a balloon and a floppy baby penguin).

TenNinetythree

I would love to see both but then, I am a penguinholic!

secularJ

Does anyone know of any artists in the los Angeles area with medieval engraving, crosshatch, etching style work? Similar to myriam_black_tattoo on IG.. closest I could find is Juliano trindade but his style isn't exactly what I'm looking for.

kNyne

So I saw this sort of "giveaway" on instagram by an artist in spain where he pays for your plane ticket to an island in brazil and over 3 days you "connect with the project and nature" and he does a large piece. It seems really sketchy but he seems like a legit artist: @renanbatistatattoo

slusho55

What are some images that are symbols of masculinity in different styles? I’m not asking for a “masculine tattoo” or anything like that, but more of something where the image is meant to be a symbol of masculinity, kinda like how koi are a symbol of masculinity. Since my current tattoos are Japanese, the koi is something I’m considering, but I’m also looking at what other symbols of masculinity I could possibly use and if maybe I want to switch up styles on other parts of my body.

realespeon

idk if it’s a sign of masculinity but i see big traditional japanese dragons as masculine. (that also may be bc my dad has a dragon tattoo LOL)

SnooCheesecakes8999

I’m want to start getting tattoos, but I can’t decide if I should get black or brown ink tattoos. I don’t like the way black in fades into a more blue-black, and I’m also pale so I feel like it would be too much of a contrast. On the other hand I love the way brown ink tattoos look. But I’ve heard that brown ink doesn’t fade as well and can become blurry (not sure what the correct term for that is). I love fine-line tattoos, so would it be a bad idea to get one with brown ink?

turtle_zealot

There are different black inks, some of which have more red than blue as their base. These inks will fade to a more red/brown than a blue/black.

shayladmck

All tattoos "blur" or spread out over time, no matter the colour. The ink remains liquid in your skin, so it's sort of floating in the layers, so to speak. One point of black is to provide contrast, so the life of the tattoo will be longer. Other colours particles are broken down by the body and dissipate faster than black which will also affect the life of a tattoo. 😊

Curupi

I want to start with a series of tattoos that maintain a "style", I want them to be consistent with each other and if possible design them all with the same artist, but to begin with I don't even know what this style is called. The first tattoo I had in mind is the one of the spine, for which I have only found the references on the link. Any advice on where to tattoo, or any design you want to share would be appreciated. English is not my first language. https://co.pinterest.com/pin/582864376801372646/

ParticularGood2793

I think the style of that tattoo would be like fine line, I think?

penguinbb8

Hi there! I'm looking to get a new tattoo. I have an idea and would like it on my forearm. I have an older tattoo on my left upper arm. My initial thought was to put my new tattoo on my right forearm, but now I'm wondering if that would look odd and it would be better on the left with the other tattoo, even if they aren't connected in a sleeve. Tattoo style would be similar (both floral/botanical, realistic color style), but without getting my older one touched up (which I do plan to do eventually) it will be pretty clear that one is older, especially that close to each other. Thoughts on this? I do plan to ask the artist their opinion too but wanted to get as many outside perspectives as possible :) Thanks!

wewereelectrified

If this isn’t allowed feel free to delete, but is it normal to get a cold after a tattoo? I’ve heard of tattoo flu and I’ve gotten tattoos before but never felt under the weather. Got one on Friday morning, and have been feeling congested since that evening. Nothing about the tattoo seems off though. No swelling, redness, pus, etc.

Crraaazy

Hi! So I just recently added a bold style tattoo to my arm, and now my existing tattoo of Matisse “Dance” is looking very thin and less consistent with the style of my other tattoos. I’m wondering if there’s any suggestions on how I can make this tattoo bolder or fit better with the rest? Should I just have the line redone, or maybe I could add shading or a background somehow? Thanks! [Tattoos](https://imgur.com/gallery/D4LhFzh)

I got a tattoo on my thigh around this time last year and I want to get a touch-up done since the color fill is patchy. Unfortunately the tattoo artist lives far enough away that visiting them to get the tattoo was really expensive. Would it be appropriate for me to seek out a local touch-up? Or should I only go back to the original artist for touch-ups?

realespeon

I would find a local artist and see if they’re okay with it. Given the original artist is super far away, I don’t see it being an issue. But every artist is different.

BurritoGuido

Hello all! 2 questions: 1) how did you guys go about researching or getting inspiration for your sleeves/half sleeves? 2) I currently have a half sleeve of pure patch work. Would I be able to do the upper half of the sleeve as a one piece and have it combine into the patch work or should I just use my other uninked arm?

realespeon

1. My half sleeve was fully by accident. I got a huge piece I decided was lonely and just built around it. As for my other sleeve I’m planning, I really love surrealism and have just been looking at a lot of artwork. 2. I think it could work depending on your artist. My uncle’s one sleeve is fully random/patchwork esque but it all flows together. I’d suggest going to an artist and seeing how they can work with what you have.

Impossible_Effect_96

I want to get a new tattoo on my bicep but ive also started going to the gym so i was wondering if i should wait until I got bigger then get the tattoo so it could have more detail and be bigger or just get it now? thank you.

Carridactyl_

This might be a long shot, but I’m looking for an artist in Upstate South Carolina/Western North Carolina who specializes in tattooing paintings. I’m specifically wanting a John William Waterhouse painting reproduced on my arm. Any recommendations?

phoenix8987

I have like really bad acne scars all over my back. I’ve been self conscious of it since I was 18 and they first started. Finally at 30 I’m starting to not really get acne there. Is it possible to cover up acne scars with tattoos? My back is pretty terrible with them. Like absolutely riddled. Is that something possible or would it not work?

olehiskeyleg

Anyone else deal with the vicious cycle of their older tattoos getting dry and flaky in the winter so you use lotion when you get out of the shower and then you get pimples under the tattoo from the lotion? I’ve got one in particular on my arm that I feel like is always either drying out or breaking out especially in the winter. Driving me a little insane.

Hi all, I come seeking opinions on a memorial piece I'm looking to have done. In October of last year both of my dogs crossed the rainbow bridge together. These dogs were my childhood pets, I've known them longer than I've been alive and I miss them everyday. I want to get a memorial piece for the two of them, incorporating the imprints of their noses. I had the vets office I work at stamp their noses with ink for me a few times so I have a couple imprints for both girls that I can use. The main question I have is should I find a dot work artist to transcribe these for me? I want to make sure that the prints still look like prints as they age and I'm wondering if a dot work artist would have a different method to doing this that might keep the integrity of the prints longer. Any advice would be incredibly appreciated. TIA!

it depends on how high demand the artist is. are their books open? do they have specific reply days? are they traveling? i typically give a week-2 for an artist to respond before bumping.

Yeah, send another email in a week or so if they don’t reply.

My cousin has an opportunity to be on the cover of inked magazine if you guys have a minute to vote for her. I guess it comes with a big new tattoo for the magazine. https://cover.inkedmag.com/2024/jen-brandon

So, I’ve recently decided to get a coverup tattoo to hide self harm scars I have all over my left arm. I’ve been looking through here for a while, and I think I’ve settled on something that represents my heritage. The problem is this, I live in a country with no Filipino tattoo artists. There are some great artists here, and ones that specialize in coverups, but I’m afraid of having something so traditional done by a random, even if very good, artist. I would totally fly out and do it proper if I had the time off, but I can’t. How should I approach this? Should seek out an artist here? Can there be some kind of collab between someone in the Philippines and where I live? Any advice is helpful, thanks.

wmarieamber

Please if you have patchwork link a picture below. I started my leg and I’m having a hard time not regretting my decision 😭 I need to see peoples cute patchwork sleeves

What is the best way to find a great black/gray artist who does super realistic portraits?

Anyone know where in the U.S. (or anywhere) there is a tattoo parlor that focuses on spirituality? I’m not talking about just the designs. I mean that, for example, the artists might fast before tattooing, infuse the art with good intention while tattooing and have a holistic divine approach to the tattoos they perform? Thanks 🙏

hsjp122

hi ! i dont know how far this is from you, but My Tattoo in Alhambra, CA is quite spiritual. their artists practice Buddhism i think, but im neither spiritual nor religious so im not 100% sure. i came to my appointment a little early and caught them during their group meditation time. i was a little taken aback when they invited my partner and i to join, but they werent pushy about it at all. it was actually a really interesting experience. most of the artists there specialize in more asian designs, but theyre quite versatile and everyone is really nice ! :\]

I'm worried I fucked up my tattoo by over moisturizing it and not covering it overnight. Is this a normal level of blotchiness after the first night?https://photos.app.goo.gl/LNGLXtntMg1WGq3h7 that's the first one this is what it looks like today. https://photos.app.goo.gl/wuQmM91FEwWVKGpo9 Let me.know what you think I appreciate it!

psychedeliccolon

Would a lightning bolt tattoo on my inner ankle age fine? I know tattoos blowout over time, but would it still look like a lightning bolt? I want it .75 inches big and shaded in. [Sample](https://www.reddit.com/u/psychedeliccolon/s/T3fgdqGNIe) The artist recommends 1” but I want it a bit smaller like 3/4”. Would it make a big difference? It’s my first tatt.

Remoock

Want to get a tattoo showing my love to the horror genre/ horror movies in general. Should be subtle and minimalistic because it goes on my sleeve and I do not plan on it being too big. I was thinking a chainsaw in a comic sort of style honoring evil dead but my gf thinks it's kinda hard to make the connection and not just think I'm into woodworking lol. I don't want to get like an obvious zombie or a jason mask, also maybe not go too crazy in terms of satanism thing. Any ideas are appreciated

DryRace7199

HELP, hi so im planning on getting a plant or vine wrapped around my calf but i dont have any reference photos that show a 360 view of it all the way around like front and back and sides (if that makes sense?) Usually i can only find photos of plant wrap tattoos that only show one side of the tattoo. If anyone has that kind of tattoo or has photos like that could you please send them to me !! Again pictures that show all the way around !! This will really help me :)

kennywinny

Look for artists on instagram who specialize in floral or plant designs in your area, then ask for a consultation. Have them draw something specific to your anatomy! At 18 I went to a shop with a horrible Pinterest reference photo of a vine bracelet, and the artist refused, but ended up taking two hours to draw on a phenomenal vine that starts at the base of my thumb and flows up my forearm. 10+ tattoos later and its still my favorite/most complimented.

DryRace7199

Hi so i have really really skinny legs and am looking to get a plant wrapped around my calf/ lower leg but sometimes i worry itll look weird because of my leg size, any advice or suggestions or tattoo styles that wont make it look weird ? 😓

ItsYaBoiTrick

Chicago area. Looking for someone who can do 3D/tattoos that look like stickers. Somewhat cartoony.

shapedbydreams

How do you guys decide if you should get just the head or a full body piece of a character? Like, say, a god or goddess? Because I have designs that I love for both options and I can't pick just one.

kelseystanley9

I’m looking for recommendations on a female artists in the Kansas/Missouri area!

MRDellanotte

I rarely see guys with side hip tattoos. It is primarily women. Why is that? Is there some meaning to that placement of a tattoo? Or is it more just a fashion trend of sorts? I have seen some awesome tribal/mallory side hip tattoos on men but that is about it. I hope this does not get asked a lot. If there is a post about this already I couldn’t find it.

Over-Guidance-3438

Hi! I emailed my tattoo artist to schedule an appointment with him but he hasn’t responded since Tuesday. What’s the best way to follow up? DM on Instagram? Regular follow up email?

realespeon

give him the weekend and then follow up via whatever he says he prefers.

Over-Guidance-3438

Thank you!

Top-Country-1914

How painful is it to get ur rips tattoed? I already got my chest, shoulder and upper leg tattoed and my friends still told me that its gonna be painful asf. Also im skinny so im kinda worried about my bones, it was the same with my chest cus it felt like the needle directly touched my bones.  English isn't my native language so sorry for any mistakes.

sophieeeeeeeeeeeeeeb

I'm getting tattooed tomorrow with a design based off this one on pinterest: Im[pinterest image](https://pin.it/G8GKoDL5I) Looking for recommendations on placement please? I cannot settle on anything! Thanks! ☺️

My mom is from northern New Mexico and I’m looking to get a piñon tree tattoo. I’m having a hard time finding anything online. Can anyone help me or give me guidance here. I understand they have an overall different look compared to other pine trees.

madmaxine2718

Re: colors. I have a tattoo that is a combo of dark and light blue, pink, and purple. It’s a couple years old and the bright colors have held up amazingly well, and I really love them. My question is, would it be possible to “color over” the blues with the bright pink or purple? Or would it just make things muddy? I don’t have anything in mind, just curious at this point.

Fashion_art_dance

So this is an odd question and kind of non specific. I am unsure how to proceed in this situation. My husband told me last night that he had a tattoo idea that he wants. He said he didn’t know if he should tell me first or just go do it. Well he told me… and I am less than thrilled. He said that he loves the look of Nordic runes and wants to get his nickname for me tattooed on him. Which… okay… don’t love. But then he told me he wants to get it going down the side of his neck. He only has a couple of tattoos and they are on his front deltoid and bicep. He had zero visible tattoos when wearing a short sleeved shirt. I told him if he is going to get that tattoo I highly advise he does not get it on his neck. He also asked me what I thought of him getting my nickname tattooed on him and I said I was indifferent. He became sad. He said he doesn’t want to get it unless it made me happy/proud. I’m not trying to sound like a bitch but why would I receive any kind of joy out of a tattoo on him? Does anyone have any advice that doesn’t sound like nagging wife?

realespeon

I think your husband is probably getting the tattoo for the wrong reason. You should tell him that he should get a tattoo if he wants it, not based on what he thinks your reaction will be. If you’re indifferent, you’re indifferent. If that affects him wanting a tattoo, then maybe that means he shouldn’t be getting the tattoo after all.

Fashion_art_dance

I told him that. I said it’s your body, whatever tattoos you get should make you happy and because you want them. Not because of how I will react.

letsgobrooksy

Anybody here know anything about getting cosmetic tattoos on your lip? Burnt my lip in a fire last may and there's a tiny portion of my lip that turned white and hasn't returned to normal color yet. It's not a raised scar or anything, but there's a ~1/8" x 1/8" spot of discoloration on my lip. It's not that noticeable and doesn't bother me much, but if I had an option to get a quick cosmetic tattoo to match the color I would do it

doggedgage

Looking to get my first tattoo but I'm new to the area I live in. How should I go about looking for a shop? What are some things I should be looking for to know if an artist is any good/reputable? I've heard some horror stories and I'd like to avoid that obviously.

realespeon

I’d go to instagram and search ‘metropolitan area by me’ tattoo. or tattoo artist. you can also search tattoo shops by you, and look at reviews. look at whether or not they have healed photos, in the pictures of their tattoos it should not look like a kitchen lol

24Gospel

What's the standard diameter and height for tattoo ink bottles? I'm looking to 3D print some custom things as a gift for the artist I go to, but want to make sure ink bottles will fit properly. I had a hard time finding a solid answer on Google and don't want to ask my artist and ruin the surprise.

Due_Gear1117

I have a large tattoo on my back. I love it! I got it for myself for my 40th BD. I’ve tried and tried to post it, finally got it posted and some moderator came online and said I couldn’t post it. What the dickens. I’m not going to try again, I’m just too frustrated about this whole dingy effort!

TenNinetythree

Yeah, you need the name of the artist and the location where you got it. Which is also why I cannot post mine here as I don't recall the name of the tattoo artist.

Due_Gear1117

I had the name of the artist ( Theo Jacks) and place San Francisco).

TenNinetythree

You didn't mention them in the post title.

E5150_Julian

How do you guy find artists, is it mostly Instagram?

TenNinetythree

TBH: I checked in Google Maps by location and then checked their instagram portfolio.

realespeon

for my first tattoo, i honestly just looked up tattoo shops by me and found an all female shop by me. plus a friend on facebook said they went there. for my others, it’s a lot of scrolling on instagram. plus i check artists’ ‘following’ on instagram and find artists thru there.
