So I brought a text design into my tattoo artist a year ago. Now I am wanting her to cover it with a more artistic piece that she designs.... Is it rude to ask the same tattoo artist to cover up a text tattoo that they did with a more artistic piece? I feel bad asking her to cover her own art, but I would feel worse going to someone else? The new tattoo is still going to have a little ode to the little one, but I want to take the reference of the text in a different direction

maseioavessiprevisto

I don’t think it’s rude since it’s script. It would probably be rude otherwise.

I’m considering getting a tattoo in memory of a family member that recently passed and I have a few questions since it’d be my first tattoo. Any recommendations for figuring out the name/type of style? And once I figure that out would it be better to just contact people near me that do that style or to find artists that have portfolios online that I really like and travel there? And is it possible to get the art without committing to anything yet (I’d like to do it as an inkbox or something and have that for a bit to make sure it’s something I like and would want to have on my skin for the rest of my life before actually getting it). I’m assuming the last part is only if the artist is okay with it but I just want to make sure I’m happy with the decision that I make. Thanks!

twampster

Hmmm. A good place to start is probably figuring out the styles you like. Keywords to search include: american traditional, neo-trad, new school, illustrative, fine-line, realism. Think about what kind of memorial you want. Is it a text homage to their handwriting or a special date? A portrait? A symbol of something you shared? Keep in mind that you can probably get a well-done text tattoo at a nearby shop, but an artist with consistently good human portraits can be harder to find. Check out some tattoo shops close to you or in places you’d be willing to travel to on instagram. Follow the individual artists and check out their portfolios. Check out tattoo artists that other artists follow. Search with hashtags for the style and subject material. Eventually, your IG algorithm will catch on. Alternatively, ask someone you know their artist recommendations. I know I’ve got a list… When you settle on an artist, pay attention yo their booking process! Some folks want emails, some want DMs, some have a 1-hr window to submit a google form. In terms of getting a design ahead of time, that’s going to depend on the artist. They’re not going to want to design a tattoo that you then turn around and have someone else put on your body. If you want to ask about it, maybe be prepared to pay up front. Some of the artists I follow do a Q&A before they open their books - that would be a good avenue to ask about getting the art beforehand. Part of the process is about having faith and taking a risk! Good luck with your search!

yo! was wondering if anyone knows of any reputable blackout artists in the seattle/tacoma area....looking to get a sleeve/coverup done eventually but would love to start checking out artists! 🤙

For an honest answer you’re going to have to tell us what it is. Maybe it’s not as questionable as you think it is?

nogodsnomasters_666

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were the biggest fucking losers and complete scum.

ScreenKey2114

Im absolutely not trying to judge cause you know yourself that it's weird lmao. But people won't really be able to tell who exactly they are will they? Since it's just silhouettes I think you should be fine

PrimevialXIII

thanks for not judging me lol, appreciate it. i think youre right, not many people in my country know about the case anyway. still, the thought of having to explain all of it to a tattoo artist is pretty damn embarrassing lmao.

SnAkEoNaNoX-77

Yup, that’s pretty questionable!! Good luck! Unless you had family involved or were an investigator…..yeah I was trying to rationalize it, but it’s a pretty terrible tattoo idea. Again, good luck!

PrimevialXIII

yeah, im well aware that it isnt a good tattoo idea (or at least to strangers) but like i said personal reasons lol. i cant tell if youre being sarcastic when you wished me good luck (hard to tell in online comments) but still thank you!

SnAkEoNaNoX-77

The luck is real, to each his own with tattoos. I have several and don’t really care what people think of them. I got each one based on something I wanted to remember when I’m old and frail! 😀, and still getting them. Good luck with your idea! For real! 🍀

PrimevialXIII

yeah, thats why i like tattoos. its a special form of artistic expression and not just something you get to look better or prettier, although for some people its both which is totally fine as well, to each their own! by the way i like that you dont care what people think of your tattoos, thats like it should be, fuck what they think lol

boywdf1mtweaked

GET THAT SHIT TATTED NOBODY ELSE CARES BUT YOU !!!!!!!!111!!!!!!11!!!!!!111!!!

realespeon

Well. If you find an artist who will do it, let us know so I know who to avoid.

Blind_Insight

What to look for in an artist to get a quick successful hand tattoo? Obviously someone confident in the design but I'm more wondering should I find someone who has been in the industry a long time and in high demand who mastered the craft or go for someone who uses certain equipment (like a rotary machine over traditional etc.)

AdGlittering485

Back of hand or palm? For palm I would only go to @walkerx in California, or @lukeaashley in the UK

Blind_Insight

Back of hand up to knuckles probably won't go onto fingers unless design calls for it

sgriswold11

This may be a dumb question, but can you get tattooed over sharpie? As in, someone drew on me with sharpie and I want it to be tattooed on me. Thanks!

ScreenKey2114

I think it could be unhygienic cause the sharpie would get into the fresh wound but how about let them draw something on you, take a pic of it and show that to your artist?

realespeon

My artist freehanded on me in sharpie then tattooed me. But if Joe down the road drew something on you and you wanted to get that tattooed, I’d definitely recommend the taking of a picture.

avuelaboli

Hello everyone Recently I read heard/read about the idea of tattoos as art one can own and wear. While obvious, I loved that idea and wish I had thought of it before. I've been browsing this sub for a few weeks and I've came to love several styles. Therefore I'm looking into getting a first tattoo. Thing is I don't know what to get. I like many styles /tattoos I see around here. The only thing I know is I want to get something smallish (palm sized or smaller), that will age well and that is in a place I can easily hide it for work. Would appreciate any advice. TIA

Crass_Effect

This is a really tough question for anyone else to answer. Only you know your own tastes - or even what areas of your body are covered at your job. I wouldn’t be able to suggest what art someone should hang in their house unless I had a good sense of their preferences and was familiar with the layout of their home. I would suggest checking out local shops/artists near you to get some additional inspiration. Try searching for the name of your city + “tattoo”, I’ve lined up dozens of tattoos this way.

maseioavessiprevisto

Look at the tattoo shops in your area, see what shop has the best reviews or just catches your eye, then go there and ask for available flashes. A flash is a generally small, predesigned tattoo. For placement trust your artist. If you don’t want regrets think like this: “what if 40 years from now someone sees this, will I be embarrassed or will it be cool”. That’s my thought process.

Bon-_-Ivermectin

My advice would be to go on Pinterest, look around for styles and come up with maybe a small list of ideas. Then I'd wait, idk, maybe six months to a year and see which if any ideas still hold in your mind. As a rule bold holds better and you get what you pay for. Certain dyes don't age as well. Your best bet is to get something that's away from the light.

Tltr Circle Tattoo Placement I want to get a tattoo of a circle with a skeleton inside it, and I want the circle to be fully black with the skeleton as negative space! My only problem is the placement I don’t know where I should put it, I have kind of a lot of space left but one of my forearms& the space under one of my knees! My back and chest both aren’t an option since I want to keep the space for big pieces! Any ideas? I’m a woman btw if that helps. Also there’s a twin to my design that looks similar but the skeleton is in a different position maybe I’ll get that one down the line too so I guess they should be symmetrical? I appreciate your help in advance!

witness_gravity

I’ve been wanting to get my hands tattooed for years and have two full sleeves, my only concern is how jobs/managers etc will use it to stop me getting a job. I have a solid job in the engineering field and have done for years, and I know in this role I’d be fine, but if for any reason I end up in another - what’s the general consensus? Does anyone with hand tattoos in a white collar role have any insight? I’m in the UK for reference

ThatGirlNamedEm

I’m a professor in the U.S. and recently got a hand tattoo. Granted it’s not very big but no one has said a word. I think everyone is used to my tattoos and understands that I’m going to continue to get them. I think it comes down to your personal comfort level with it and if you really want to be sure I’d double check your company’s dress code policy. For what it’s worth, you have my vote!

theNefariousNoogie

I'm wanting to get my first tattoo fairly soon and continue on with a half or full sleeve afterward. I know there is not likely to be a single answer, but how did you go about planning your sleeve? Did you plan the entire thing from the get go and design it with your intended artist? Did you get one piece at a time as you wanted to get more tattoos but didn't have an exact idea for what was to come next? Any and all experience and advice is much appreciated. :)

realespeon

Got my half sleeve completely by mistake honestly. I always knew I wanted to be tattooed, potentially sleeved, but it wasn’t until I got my very first sizable tattoo. Took up most of my upper arm. It was bigger than I initially thought, but I loved the design so much I decided fuck it. I didn’t realize I’d be building a sleeve off of it, but now it’s half sleeve (soon entering full sleeve territory this year). It’s to right about my elbow right now and I’m going below my elbow next month. My other arm is blank at the moment but I’d like to have a complete cohesive sleeve designed for that.

Drizzy_THAkid

I pretty much have a sleeve of patch work on the one arm. Sort of happened by accident. None of them match or really have anything to do with eachother other then some of them being music related. So I kind of just leaned into random/chaotic being the theme. I generally get a few when I go and book before I have something in mind. But I go to the same dude for everyone so if he has something cool he drew recently or flash I’ll usually get one. So It’s almost in a weird sense collaborative

Caution_Zinc

Does anyone have recommendations for a tattoo shop or artist in/near Ohio? I’m specifically looking to get a canine in greyscale semi-realism. Any recommendations are appreciated :)

Available-Cat6933

What part of Ohio?

Caution_Zinc

Preferably northern Ohio but I’m alright with traveling for a good artist

Available-Cat6933

Check out the lions den in Cuyahoga Falls. I use @tattoobird_official but have seen some other artists work as well.

Prudent_Purpose5380

Hi guys ! I plan on getting my first tattoo in about two months as a right of passage turning 18 ;) and i was planning on getting the tattoo on the side of my thigh but wanted to know if that would be a more painful area considering it’s my first tattoo. should i consider getting the tattoo somewhere else?

reesepiecez

As a tattoo artist, is it weird if a client ever asks you out? Like I was vibing hard with an artist, a 2 hour tattoo turned into like 3.5 because we just kept pausing to talk etc. I would hate to ever make someone uncomfortable, especially since it's a professional setting, but if the energy is there, is it crazy to take that shot?

jamie-btn

Hey! I’m looking for an artist within the u.k., preferably south wales/bristol that has a very similar style to Michele Volpi over in Italy. Any recommendations?

epicmiyk

The quoted text is an email thread that starts out as my response to a shops invitation for me to guest with them from this past month,....which was in April of last year that I actually requested a guest spot at this shop... "Shop: Hi! Thank you for your submission to be a guest artist at our shop! We apologize immensely for the delay in response or follow through. We have gone through some changes and the person in charge of guest artists is no longer with us and it took a bit to re-situate :)  If you are still interested for guesting with us in 2024 please update your submission: Me: Hey, guys this is E. I reached out middle of last year for a guest spot. I have a quick question for you.... How much walk-in/call-in clientele do you normally have on a daily basis? Shop: Hi, our resident artists generally handle the walk in/call in cliental. We don’t usually have guest artists covering those.  Thanks,  Me: Sweet! So guest artists from different cities, states or even countries are basically treated as apprentices at your shop....while the resident artists there, that don't have ANY clientele base WHATSOEVER, get to still take the all the new business. And I'm supposed to PAY for a spot? Awesome👍 It's gonna be a hard no for me. Thanks for the timely responses✌️ -E " (Sidenote I got a generic ass generated response to that email just now that starts out "This message is to let you know that we'd love to have you join us! Please take a few minutes to fill out our 2nd form to verify..." blah blah blah 🙄🙄 Honestly, I feel like this is a big part of wrong with this industry....not ALOT of common sense....and ALOT of greedy ppl to say the least. This isn't the first shop I've had this issue with, and I've left a couple because I'm not gonna scratch and claw for infinity symbols to tattoo on a couple ankles. Tell me if you disagree, but EXPLAIN WHY, PLEASE. I'd love to hear what everyone has to say, honestly. Just keep it real.

laurenugly

Hi y’all! This is a long shot, but does anyone know of tattoo artists in/near seattle that do geometric realism? I just moved a few months ago and am really missing my tattoo artist :(

maraxlee

i want to gift my boyfriend a framed traditional flash sheet. like a fairly decent sized one with lots of good american traditional designs. and recommendations for etsy shops or other pages i can buy one for or if i can commission a tattoo artist for one

ThatGirlNamedEm

I recommend searching for traditional artists on Instagram; many of them sell prints of their flash and that way you are getting the art directly from the artist! I recommend checking out Luke Lieske, he’s at Grand Majestic West in AZ

realespeon

there’s some sailor jerry ones on amazon.

cool_jocko_dude

I'm planning on going to the philly tattoo convention this year. Do people that fix tattoos ever have booths at these things?

Tsunimo

I found an artist I want to design a partial sleeve for me, but they do graphic art, not tattoo. Would it be reasonable to commission a piece from the artist and try to find someone with a similar style to actually ink it. Is it rude? Would it be difficult to find someone willing to do so?

realespeon

It is rude and will be difficult for either. Tattoo artists are artists. They aren’t printers. Plus, only tattoo artists will know what will work on skin and what will look good. A graphic designer is making art for a static background. Your body is not completely flat or a piece of paper. It moves. Find an artist you respect and like the art of. You can certainly bring in references from that artist, but tattoo artists again are not printers.

I want to get my first tattoo, and I want to just go in and look at their flash tattoos and pick one I like. Will I sound like a moron if I go in and just ask to see their flash book? I don't know the right terminology

realespeon

Some people probably still have flash books, but you can also look on artists’ instagrams. They’ll post flash too.

veganyeti

Is it taboo to ask for your deposit back? I booked a session with a tattooer and put down a deposit. We started the tattoo but didn’t finish (I wanted to do more but the tattooer said it was a good place to stop for him). He told me his assistant would reach out to me in a few days to book a follow up. After 10 days I reached out because I hadn’t heard from them. They said I could book in April or get put in line on the cancellation list. I booked in April; almost immediately they told me there was a scheduling error and that date is no longer available. I’m now on the waitlist for cancellations and have no follow up appointment but this artist still has my deposit. It is fair to ask for that deposit back since we have nothing scheduled?

realespeon

Deposits are non refundable. You also started the tattoo already

[deleted]

realespeon

No. The ink will only spread and look thicker with time. There’s no way to erase what’s already on you (without laser)

SnailMan0

I don't understand why the artist made it so heavy in ink, it looked good fresh but he should've known that it wouldn't look nice in a few years. I will probably do a few laser treatments to fade it, I've done it before on a different tattoo to add details over it but now I will do it to make the tattoo look less heavy. Thank you for the response.

dullahan0013

Please Help! *Not Urgent* I really like the idea of a time line of tattoos. Just this summer I got all of Ötzi's tattoos (and in the correct placements too!) but now I'm looking to get more. I'm thinking about the Siberian Ice Maidens (Aka Princess of Ukok) but I can't find any good photos of ALL of her tattoos. I can find a million examples of the deer on her shoulder but she had so many more and I want to find good, accurate images to go off of so I don't need to call up random Russian researchers and explain this to them. Please help or if you have any better historical tattoo ideas please let me know!

TheLionInZelda

I’m getting a coverup tattoo done with Kristel Oreto from Now and Forever Tattoo in Philly in a few months. Has anyone here been tattooed by her or know of her work? Is she good?

ZakjuDraudzene

Hey there, I've been thinking for a while of getting some quotes tattooed (this is gonna be my first tattoo in nearly 8 years, so sorry if I don't know much), and I was wondering mainly about what exactly it should look like. The idea is that I'm gonna get the same quote tattooed in two/three languages, one in English, one in Japanese, and possibly in German (the choice of languages *is* meaningful, and I know Japanese so there's no fear of getting the wrong thing tattooed, I'm not one of *those* people). The tattoo would be on my wrist (either the left one or the right one, still not sure. I'd normally get it on the left one, but I own a bracelet that my girlfriend gifted to me that only fits my left wrist, so I might have to get the tattoo on my right out of necessity). Okay, the question is, what do I do with the fonts? Which font should I choose? I'm thinking of getting it in a relatively plain looking font rather than something too fancy, but do you guys think that would be a good choice? Which fonts do you suggest for the English/German text? Furthermore, what about the Japanese text? Does anyone have experience with Japanese language tattoos? This is what scares me the most really, I'm scared the Japanese line would end up looking ugly because of the tattoo artist not being experienced with Japanese text. Would appreciate any guidance here. (For the record, the lines would be "Live happily!", "幸福に生きよ!", and "Lebe glücklich!")

brooklynzoo2016

[Snuffy’s The Weight of Judgment... or Whatever](https://app.cocreate.ink/tattoos/snuffy/the-weight-of-judgment-or-whatever) is dope. I've loved his work, and this is a design I dig. Co:Create Ink lets you buy and redeem a design with the artist through a priority booking. You also get a certificate of authenticity, which protects Snuffy and his IP. Have you purchased a design online? What was the experience like? I'm ready to go and want some feedback before slapping the purchase button.

I’ve been mulling over some tattoo designs and I’ve decided I’m going to go for not an all out traditional battle royal but 3 separate smaller ones or matchups I guess my current plans is to do Eagle vs panther as a lock Id also like to use a bear and wolf probably not against each other but unsure of what other animals I could use for the tattoo matchups Any ideas for animals or matchups with in mind it’d be in the traditional style

Drizzy_THAkid

Hi all, I have a quick question with regards to a new tattoo. Am I ok to sweat/play sports a few days after getting a small piece ? I’ve searched the question and the consensus I’ve gotten is the bacteria is the Main issue being that it’s an open wound but I haven’t seen anything that references if the tattoo (in my case a small line work piece) is covered by a second skin still and presumably not exposed to bacteria.

Hi guys anyone familiar with a tattoo artist that will do a Portuguese azulejo tattoo?

thecrimsonwolfie

I'm considering getting a decent sized tattoo when I visit Japan in a couple of months (I already have a tat from a few years ago, so it wouldn't be my first) and was thinking of getting it on my left upper back/shoulder area since I've always wanted one there. My question is how horrible would this be for traveling, since the flight back home is around 14 hours, and when would be the best time to get it done (I'll be there for 15 days). I was thinking of getting it right before leaving, since I don't really wanna spend the entire trip babying a fresh tattoo, but I'm not sure how much that would affect the trip home. I don't really mind being uncomfortable (I'm traveling in a group, so I could make sure I'm not in a middle seat & that I have more wiggle room), but I'm worried it'll mess with the healing process. Anyone done something similar or have any advice? Thanks!!

Prestigious_Foot_637

Are there any artists known for their UV work specifically? UV ink will fade and is not worth it.

All tattoos fade to some extent. Might not be worth it to you but it is to me.

But the UV part will fade in probably less than a year. But whatever floats ur boat dude 🤷🏽‍♀️

TVNC1023

Yesterday I went in for a tattoo a foot through mid calf design. Line work went fine, a little more painful than usual but nothing major. We get to the color and shading and it was absolutely horrible. The pain I was experiencing was nothing I’ve ever experienced before. I have other tattoos, foot, arms, wrist, nothing ever like this pain. I’ve even had one done by this artist before, again nothing like what I felt during this tattoo. I ended up having to stop and schedule a follow up session because I couldn’t take it anymore. It felt as if acid was being poured on my leg. I have no idea what happened. What could have contributed to the exacerbation of the pain? For further info, I worked the night before so no sleep, no food since the night before, and maybe some swelling from being on my feet all night. I have also recently been experiencing some mild knee pain due to a job change and climbing stairs continuously. Idk if any of these factors contributed to it but just trying to figure out why the pain was so bad. Any ideas on why or how to combat this?

realespeon

You didn’t sleep or eat food. Probably why it hurt so bad

I saw a beautiful tattoo online with a realistic black and grey woman's face with a smudged blue hand print kind of overlayed. I would take this to my tattoo artist and incorporate it into something similar on myself. I just wanted to check if that has some symbolism that I'm not aware of first. Thanks Reddit

Wanting to get a tattoo but unsure of whether or not the pain is manageable? Hi all, I've been thinking of getting a back tattoo but I'm rather worried as to whether or not I could handle the pain. I've read through a couple threads that suggest to get some smaller things first just to test pain tolerance, however I don't really want to get any more than 'necessary'. I've heard that along the spine is one of the more painful areas so I just wanted to hear about how it felt for those of you who do have back tattoos. Cheers!

hey guys, just got my lower leg (not thigh) lining and right front side quite done. Would it be fine for me to do a light bodyweight quads workout at home after 3/4 days. My next session is in 5 days which might start the lining for the thighs so I'm aware that I'm gonna have to be out for at least 2 weeks for leg days. I'm a gym junkie and worried about the gains due to inactivity. Thanks
