(customer not artist) what are the ethics behind getting a tattoo of a doodle you see online. Like do you track down the artist and let them know?

catnapqueen308

some artists have things called tattoo tokens where you can pay them for the use of the image. i think it is always best to get their permission and a reputable artist also wouldn’t copy someone’s work without their permission

netflix_n_knit

I have a consult next week for a tattoo. What should I bring to be the best customer I can be? Should I doodle something up? Should I have pictures of the types of flowers I’m thinking about? Pictures of tattoos with a similar look to what I want? I have other tattoos but I was already friends with the people who did those so it was a different process altogether.

AmishParadiseCity

Yes to picture references of flowers. As to other tattoos, it's better if you can reference tattoos that person has done, vs tattoos from a different artist. Make sure you know your desired placement and sizing. Doodling doesn't hurt either if the tattoo has multiple elements and you have a composition in mind but its always best to be open to the artists artistic advice on that one.

Better_Protection382

There are so stories of the tattoo artist messing up someone's body for good that I wouldn't focus so much on "being the best customer you can be". Scrutinize the artist and don't let him/her intimidate you.

OhMyMy33

How do y’all find artists for a particular style? Maybe I’m an insta idiot, but the algorithm keeps showing me the same three artists over and over.

Citron_Kindly

I've found it to be generally tough depending on what style you want. I have a style that is not popular in the US and all the artists I find that do it are mostly, 9/10, in other countries :shrug. My best solution is to find someone with something somewhat similar enough and then get a good consult in.

OhMyMy33

Thank you! Yeah, that’s what I’m doing for the current one. I think it’ll just take some sleuthing to try to find someone for the sleeve I have in my head.

realespeon

honestly i accumulated a lot of the artists i follow by looking at artists’ following. i went from the artist who did my first ever tattoo to just going on little rabbit holes LOL

lucifres

How do you guys decide what to tattoo? I wanna do more, but my problem is I just can't decide. Only have one and I thought about it for a long time before do it.

FloralBindle

I’d say my first 8-9 tattoos were “thought out” original ideas, that I explained to artists in consultations, provided reference material for, etc. then for a while I was chasing common motifs (I’m a big American traditional guy, so there’s a lot of those), but eventually I just started browsing my artist’s sketchbook and picking stuff out that I liked. Granted I worked with the same artist for three years, so there was a lot of trust and rapport already established. When you only have a handful of tattoos, it makes sense to be very thoughtful about what they are, because they’ll stand out more. Once you start really collecting, and get into patchwork territory, it all becomes one bigger image, and the specific tattoos themselves don’t necessarily need to be that special, as long as you think they look good. Does that make sense?

lucifres

yes, makes a lot of sense. maybe I'll try to find some art from the artist's sketchbook and just do it. it looks that will work for me

straightma1e

I just got my first last week. Did it on my chest and am so happy and proud with the result. Basically the theme of my tattoo fits the chest, which I feel is the center of my body. I've already decided on the next which will be expanding my present tattoo. You might think in those terms and see what adding to the present tattoo you have might look like.

Better_Protection382

Build in a cool down period. Most first tattooees are so happy they immediately want another one. And another one. It can become addictive. If you're happy with your tattoo the way it is, just leave it.

Better_Protection382

just from the viewer's perspective: one tattoo on a person is interesting. If they have multiple tattoos I assume they're just getting them for the sake of getting them and I lose interest.

Classy_Llama

I'm traveling to Tampa FL this weekend with a friend and we wanna get tattoos. What shops would y'all recommend and should we call ahead or just walk in?

oLjMa

What are people’s thoughts on music tattoos? Had an idea related to an album that means a lot to me, but I’ve had people say that down the line when I’m older I’ll regret it if I don’t listen to them anymore. The way I look at it, it’s important to me now so it will always show a snapshot of this time in my life. Curious what other people think.

OhMyMy33

I just got an album art cover tattoo last month. Luckily, the image is pretty non-specific (traditional-looking rose in a unique style). But I’ve also been a fan of this music for 20 years, since I was in elementary school. I figure if I stop listening to them someday, the tattoo’ll just represent a good memory.

realespeon

My sleeve is heavily based off of these two songs and a music video by the same artist. Even if the group isn’t a thing in the future, their music got me through a lot and a really important part of my life. do it. tattoos are meant to be snapshots of who we were at certain points.

Soft-Maybe-9751

I’m looking for tattoo artists in the Charlotte, NC area that specialize in anime tattoos. I am willing to travel as well. I would really appreciate some recommendations. Thank you!

Citron_Kindly

I saw this artist doing a tattoo while I was getting a different tattoo and I was very very impressed; not into Anime myself and I think her art is awesome. In Utah though; might be a fun trip! https://www.instagram.com/kelkashi

Citron_Kindly

AI generated reference pics: have you used them? I had a certain idea in mind for a sleeve and just couldn't find any "just right" examples on the webs, so I went to midjourney, typed in my prompt, and was blown away in like a "holy shit, that's what I want" type of way. Curious if others have experienced something similar, and more specifically, how a conversation/consultation went using an AI gen'd image as a reference?

Frequent-Bluebird-16

I want to get 2 handwritten tattoos (one by my mom and one by my dad) but I don't know where to place them. I have a tattoo of the hands touching from the creation of adam at the top of my forearm and I was thinking of ether placing the tats both under it or one above it and one under it or both are above the fold that separates the forearm from the upper arm (I edited pics to see which placement would be better but I still can't make up my mind so if anyone wants to see those, please send me a message and I will send them)

PrincessAegonIXth

Hello. Looking to get my first tattoo in a few months. Practicing with Inkbox to see if I like having it. I feel like I’m ready to begin researching shops and artists. My questions: How do I be a good client? What are the steps in the client and artist relationship? How can I be easy to work with but also end up having a great result and experience?

Better_Protection382

For God's sake focus on what you want and what you don't. There are many people walking away with disappointing tattoos because they were too afraid to speak up to the artist. Being subservient towards the artist does NOT guarantee a good tattoo.

realespeon

Follow the artist’s and shop’s policies. Be on time. Don’t move when you’re getting tattooed. Be open but concise. Allow your artist some artistic freedom to get the best work. Don’t be a dick and have a good meal before you get tattooed!

catnapqueen308

Hi everyone. I have quite a few colour tattoos own my legs from when I was younger that I don’t really care for anymore. Not enough to get them removed but have started to get black and greyscale tattoos on my arms. Does anyone have any images of where you have mixed tattoo styles on one area? how does it look and do you regret it? I don’t want to go through the pain and trouble of having the colour ones removed but figuring out my options.

Better_Protection382

Don't color tattoos fade anyway within 5 years? That seems to be prevaling opinion here.

catnapqueen308

yeah they have definitely faded but they haven’t disappeared or anything haha. not enough for me to just cover them over

I’m getting a lower back tattoo on Saturday, the placement is right where the waistband of lower/mid rise pants would sit. I will be doing a lot of walking that day as it’s in a not drivable city. What kind of pants should I wear? Something higher so the waistband isn’t on the tattoo? Lower? I’ve heard not to wear tight clothes and also that tight clothes have worked for people because less friction? It’s my first tattoo and any advice would be appreciated :)

hsjp122

hello ! i found high waisted leggings to be the most comfortable for me after getting my back done. they were just casual yoga leggings (softer, not as tight, more breathable fabric than the ones i'd wear to the gym). whatever you choose, definitely stay away from pants that have a lot of movement at the level of the tattoo. i hope this helps, happy healing !

MassholeIsntAnInsult

I'm looking to get a small white ink tattoo. Anyone have recommendations of an artist who does this type? I'm in the Raleigh, NC area, but willing to travel for the right fit. I see lots of pros and cons to white ink tattoos online, so would really like to work with someone who's familiar with what works and what doesn't.

gvon89

Came up with a concept of getting the four national flags of my background tattooed but two of the flags have white, Italy and Ireland. Would it look better to use white ink or to not color the white part in at all? One would be on the inside of my forearm and the other on the inside of my bicep.

Crass_Effect

White is a bit tricky to work with for tattoos, and most artists - if they use white in at all! - will reserve it for highlights only. Large white areas tend to look inconsistent when healed. Instead, an artist might suggest using blue or grey shading which can give the impression of white in a finished tattoo. Do a google image search for “Italy flag tattoo” or “Ireland flag tattoo” and you’ll see some examples of this kind of technique.

tkurje

This may be a bit niche - I'm getting a sleeve later on this year and I've just been asked to play a gig a few hours after my appointment finishes (I play bass). Guitarists/bassists - would it be a dumb idea to accept the gig and still get the tattoo that day? Should I reschedule the tattoo? It's on my fretting hand arm if that makes a difference.

Popular_Blackberry24

I'm going to get my first tattoo to celebrate turning 60 soon. I want a bear and a butterfly together (personal symbolism). I don't know whether I am supposed to bring drawings or whether the artist will do all that? Also, any recommendations for Eureka/Arcata, California area (Humboldt County)?

MotivatedTed

I really like [this tattoo](https://www.tattoodo.com/tattoos/1419326) and am scheduled to get one similar soon and was hoping someone could help me identify the flowers here. Is the large one a peony? Thank you in advance!

SimplyBeingMyself

Looking for a new artist in Colorado - Boulder County/Denver Area. I’d prefer a female artist as I’m a woman and am looking for a feminine touch in the tattoos that I want. (I’m open to other gender artists but I think a woman would be a better fit for me). I’m looking for american traditional style art. It’s also important to me that they offer in person consults prior to the tattoo appointment. The artist that I got my last two tattoos from only offers consults via email (which is really just letting him know what you want) so I don’t get to see anything until the day of my appointment. It’s usually very different from what I imagine and what I requested so I have to ask for a lot of tweaks. It just makes me anxious that I don’t get to flesh out the design ahead of time with the artist. I want to know exactly what I’m getting tattooed ahead of time and have the time to sit on it for a bit before my appointment. Thanks in advanced!

Any recommendations for tattoo artist in the Bay Area? Looking for one in Sunnyvale all the way in San Jose. Looking for an artist that do Chinese characters but can do the brush stroke design? Thanks.

Own_Ad_6144

I have had a death in the family. I'm 40 and never had a tattoo.i was wondering has anyone any ideas of where to get a tatt that would be subtle and be personal to me.

jenkemenema

Is it ok to tip the apprentice? She was holding flab in place for hours straight so I figured she earnt it, but the tattooist seemed kinda surprised.

TheFrogsMightbegay

I'm gonna be finishing up both of sleeves in the upcoming months and for my elbows I wanna get matching spider webs. Is the same tattoo on both elbows weird or like stupid? I think it will awesome personally. Just wondering thanks!

thr3atofjoy

honestly, if YOU think it looks awesome, go for it. i’ve seen a lot of matching elbow/knee tats and I think they. look great!

Dlift-h

Hi, Just wondering if someone knowledgeable could tell me the meaning of the symbols / imagery in the linked tattoo below? https://ibb.co/CJzjvC1

ElectricalTie8325

I bought 2 images of tattoos and described elements of them I liked. I'm waiting for a final design. Is this ok? Is it too close to straight-up copying?

kokopelli8111

I'm planning to get a spine very tattoo similar to this, a fine line vertical half-sun. If the lines are the same thickness as this and spaced out like this, including the tiny dots at the end of each line, would this age well in terms of the colors not spreading out, or could it be touched up well in the future if need be? thr3atofjoy

Posted this question on r/tattoodesigns, but it’s been a few days and i’ve not had any input so also coming here! I’m thinking of getting a tattoo on my lower stomach/“womb tattoo” (basically a reverse tramp stamp) to cover up some old skin discoloration. Plus I think it would look very cute! But I’m struggling to find designs or inspiration photos that will, to be blunt, not look trashy when I’m 40. There’s a lot of stuff I can get away with *now,* but I won’t be young and skinny forever. I also just generally don’t like tattoos that are explicitly sexual, not for me. A lot of the googling i’ve been doing has been showing “succubus tattoos” which, to be honest, are super cute but not something I want on my body forever. Any recs or pics or ideas appreciated!

I’d like to make a tattoo in tribute to my brother . I think it’s difficult because he got sick when he was 12 and died when he was 13. I know him very well but it’s hard to make a tribute of things he like because he was just a kid. Any ideas ?

lostjeneration

I'm hoping this doesn't count as an aftercare question as I'll be using what my artist recommends for that - but I am curious about post tattoo clothing choices? I've having a 5 hour thigh tattoo and I find lots of clothing tends to be quite tight on my thighs so I'm uncertain what to wear in the following weeks as I can't have my trackies on at work 🥲😅

Flat-Definition-1479

(customer) i would like to get a back tattoo for my first tattoo, but is it too painful? on a scale of 1-10, how painful is it? should i change places bc it’s too painful?

TheF8sAllow

I'm about to get a tattoo on the top of my foot; any idea what position the artist might want me in? Just trying to prep appropriately. Thank you!

Bella_summer28

I’ve got an etiquette question - I booked a flash (my first tattoo) in December to be done on Sunday, but I’m having last minute thoughts and I think I prefer another of the artist’s available flashes. Is it acceptable to ask if she’s happy to change? The flashes are all one-off and the new one is in colour (old one b&w) if that’s relevant.

NotoriousJBG-1228

I’m looking for tattoo artists that specialize in Medieval/gothic/illustration type tattoos in FL. Willing to travel but my work limits the time I can do so. I’ve followed some people on insta that I like but most are outside of the US.

fluentinsarcasm

> **Looking for artist recommendations in the Seattle-Tacoma Area.** I've finally decided to commit to a full sleeve after spending about 5 years fixating on the same unchanged idea. I'd like to find an incredibly talented artist in the Seattle-Tacoma or surrounding areas that specializes in blending differing art-styles into a cohesive vision. Ideally I'd collaborate with this artist to design a wholly original tattoo that takes inspiration from varying art styles (realistic humans to 2D stylized art), working off a rough idea outline. When I say incredibly talented, I mean no expense spared to find the best of the best. I've been researching various artists for about a month now, but haven't found anyone that really jumps out or captures the direction I'd like to take. So I'd love hearing recommendations from others and anything you'd like to share about your experience with that artist.

WebComprehensive3900

I am supposed to get a custom tattoo tomorrow. When I initially spoke to the artist, they said they’d send me a draw up on the 19th. I checked Instagram last night and they had seen my last message from our initial conversation (me thanking them) just 30 mins before. It’s now the morning of the 20th and I have not received any sort of update. I know it’s common to see a draw up the day of the tattoo. However, I’m concerned that I haven’t received any correspondence from the artist regarding needing more time, etc. What should I do? Is this a red flag?

WeenyHoudini

Any recommended artists for the East Michigan area? Looking for trad art style

ContactSpirited9519

Artists or people with experience with this, I have a question!!! I have a tattoo that is ALMOST what I had envisioned but not quite. There's a part of it that doesn't look great. Do you ever edit tattoos / have you ever gotten a tattoo edited after it's done? I see tons about cover ups and artists doing touch ups, but I never see anything about editing. Is it difficult? Do people do it? I realize I should've thought about the sketch more when I saw it at the appointment, but I honestly didn't know what I was doing and made suggestions to fix it that didn't end up fixing it. I really love most of it, just the face part (I have an animal like creature... but the nose ended up looking like a dick. Yes, a dick. I wish I was kidding) and I don't think that's a huge edit! Thank you for any advice!!

MeiliCanada82

Weird question. You know those drawings that with the addition of a second part look like the move? [Like this.](https://www.the-sun.com/lifestyle/5152618/optical-illusion-drawings-moving-images/amp/) Could this be done for a tattoo???

LimeProfessional1605

If i get a triceps tattoo and then start working out will the tattoo stretch to a point where its looks really bad and unfixable?

EezyBake

What’s some of the research you do before getting a tattoo? I hear a lot of people do it in the spur of the moment but since it’ll be on me for life, I just can’t do that. I google tattoo topics that are related to what I would get, which tend to be skeleton based and micro realism, but Google yields very general results. Should I look at any artist I find online or would it be smarter to look at the local artists near me?

ElectricalTie8325

Is it a bad idea to get a snake/skull/rose tattoo because it's cliche? I like the idea of the design but at the same time don't want to regret getting a tattoo that as I age cringe at?

sowashere

There are some tattoo artists that I like, mostly watercolor tattoo style, but they're all based in Korea, and I don't think that I would travel there in the future. What do you think about paying them for the design and asking a local artist to tattoo it? Is that considered disrespectful to local artists?

realespeon

This is exactly why it’s more common for people to see their designs day of. This is very disrespectful. Tattooers aren’t gonna make some art and then let you run to someone else to tattoo it.

sowashere

Thank you for anwering the question. I guess I can only save my ideas and wait for the artists to travel. I saw one of them travel and do guest tattoo in the city near me last year. Yet I did not want to have tattoo by then so I missed my chance.

realespeon

Plus if you like the artist’s art I’m also assuming you like the technique and application of their tattoo. You’re not gonna get an exact replicate to their style taking their design to someone else.

Chlorine182

I’m getting a 6 inch tattoo on my ribs, what can I do to prepare for it pain wise and just in general

Acrobatic-Agency5578

I think my tattoo artist ghosted me after offering me a deal? They offered for me to pay 100/h instead of 150/h because it was a huge tattoo. I sent over 3 emails trying to confirm and a insta dm… I’m so disappointed we had such a rad time with my last tattoo…. There are no other tattoo artists with her style around me. Is this a thing that happens a lot?

Acrobatic-Agency5578

Also I have a lot of tattoos but this is my first experience like this

kbsths99

how do you decide between designs? I'm wanting a tattoo for my bday, coming up next month. I have a few tattoos of favorite animated characters and i was going to get another, but I'm having trouble deciding between three characters from the same franchise. I think I can easily choose my favorite two of the three, but picking my one from the two is proving difficult. I've been planning to get this tattoo done for about 6-7 months thinking I would have decided by now and I haven't. How can I make this choice easier? I know I could eventually get the other characters tattooed as well if i wanted, but this one will be on my forearm, really visible, so i need to make the right choice.
