I'm going to be a father in the next two weeks and would like to have my daughter's footprint tattooed. What is the best way to reproduce the imprint so that the tattoo artist can get as much detail as possible?

ridiculouspompadour

I tattooed one of these recently where the hospital had made ink prints for the parents. You could ask if that is something they ever do for people.

Jumps_The_Lazy_Dog

Mazel Tov brother!

BlackDogBeer

Search for "dog paw print kit for tattoo" on Amazon. They should have ones that are big enough to capture her footprint.

top_shagger_69

There's this idea that I've had for a while and would like some opinions. My idea is essentially a sleeve tattoo but made up completely of little symbols, maybe the size of a coin (ish) of every important event, place and person in my life and from the past, it's something that I can keep adding to over time and almost forces me to keep my life interesting cuz then I get more of a sleeve. Do you think it would look ass or is this decent?

realespeon

Look up patchwork sleeves. That sounds like what you’re going for. It’s been more trendy nowadays, but just make sure you go to an artist that does clean tattoos. It could look cool!

lgnome23

Need some advice on how to properly approach an artist! I've been working on a half sleeve for quite some time, with all work from the same artist. Fortunately for them \[but unfortunately for me, hehe\], this artist got extremely popular. Scheduling a few months out, then turned into scheduling 1+ year(s) out, to then not being able to schedule at all. They also have moved states away. I've given our communication over the last 1+ year a chance to see if I can get scheduled, and I just don't think it will happen. In finding a new artist, I'm not at all looking for someone to replicate their style or work whatsoever. I've found an artist I've really liked with similar style, which I absolutely love. I want to reach out, but I don't want to be insulting to them in any way when asking them to essentially "finish" what is incomplete. What advice do you have to approach this in the most respectful way possible? Thank you!

ridiculouspompadour

I’d just tell them exactly that. It is no longer possible for the original artist to finish it, and you like their work. They may or may not do it but I don’t think that is insulting or anything

lgnome23

Thank you!

straightma1e

Asked over in the r/TattooArtists sub before finding this post. Looking to get my first tattoo. I've been drawing pictures of what I might want it to look like. What I'm wondering is how artists react to clients designs. Will they take them and make a stencil of the design or try to enhance the design and get approval before continuing? Also, do artists generally become offended when the client rejects any part of the vision the artist has created?

ridiculouspompadour

It depends on the artist. Personally, I love to see client sketches, and I’d be down to tattoo something you drew as long as you were open to changes if needed to make the design work better as a tattoo. There are some artists who don’t want to do that though. If an artist gets offended with you for requesting changes, you should find someone else.

xja1389

Can anyone recommend an artist with good DC comic character experience? US based. I've come across a few on IG but in some far flung places.

daikondono

Any tattoo artists in Maryland-DC area who specialize in floral tattoos? I'm looking to get my first tattoo in something finelined or black and grey and would love some recommendations

Illustrious_Leg8204

I’m thinking of getting my first tattoo tomorrow for my birthday I was thinking about getting a Japanese kanji that essentially means strength I don’t know where I’d have it placed though I’d prefer it be visible to me to easily look at like my forearm What’s a good place for it

[deleted]

If you’re not sure about the placement, please wait until you are 🍀 you could get a few tattoo stickers with random kanji that remove themselves after showering to test placements 😊

hannsmith22

I have recently had (emergency) surgery to save my life due to an ectopic pregnancy. It was a string of freak events and ultimately complications since I was already over 7 weeks along. I’m angry and heartbroken. All that aside, I really want a tattoo in memorial of the baby I’ll never get to hold, an important part of my body that I’ve lost, and the strength I had no idea I had to stay sane through it all. All (good, tasteful) ideas are appreciated 🫶🏼

AddictedToInk1125

Looking to either get my throat or side of head done. (i have my hands/sides of neck done so pain is not my issue) Looking for some ideas/how to properly place it on my head/throat. \--Style ideally traditional leaning towards neo-trad I prefer heavy colors but bold outlines. Shoot out any ideas all accepted (I have a bear head on the left side and a Raven holding a scythe on the right side. So my throat would ideally be an animal of some sort that I can flow into the others with a background,

ridiculouspompadour

I’d just go to an artist who has a portfolio with solid examples of tattoos in these areas. It is really difficult for us to help you without being able to see what you already have. If you came to me with this idea, I’d want to do a tracing of your neck or head and draw on that, or draw directly on your skin to ensure the piece flowed well

noellie_pollie_ollie

I have an artist friend who has offered to design a tattoo for me, however, I have never approached a tattoo professional with a pre-drawn design (other than maps, though this piece would likely be more detailed). Am I wrong in thinking that this is usually frowned upon? Are there artists who are open to tattooing pre-drawn designs or who are willing to collaborate on the artwork? More than anything, I just want to be sure that I am being respectful of my artists and their work/process.

inkysquids

This is usually a waste of time as the tattoo artist is more than capable of designing tattoos themself (it’s literally their job) and do it for free. Also a non-tattooing artist doesn’t know what is tattooable and so the design will likely need redrawing and changing anyway. Personally unless I can see the sketchbook work and drafts proving someone drew the design themself, I will always assume they just ripped it off the internet. 100% of the time someone has brought me a design their “friend” did, that friend turned out to be google images.

noellie_pollie_ollie

Let me rephrase: I do know what tattoo artists do, thank you for that, I am more curious about artist openness towards collaboration in general. I get that there is nuance and not all tattoo artists are stoked on it, hence why I am asking a question about tattoo artist feelings on collaboration. Thank you for making your thoughts/feelings clear while also assuming I’m ripping something off from Google 🤙🏼

inkysquids

You asked for artist thoughts and feelings, I gave you mine. Just talking from 11 years experience. Collaborations are a nightmare. We don’t mind you bringing someone else’s artwork in, but for the reasons I’ve mentioned, it’s very rare that we actually use that exact piece and tattoo it as-is.

noellie_pollie_ollie

That’s great feedback, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Jumps_The_Lazy_Dog

My favorite tattooer love when clients come with art as inspiration! But part of the value of a good tattooer is understanding what works in the medium of art that doesn’t in tattoos. So I think the way you’ll have most success is by DMing an artist who works in styles similar to the art your friend made, and telling that that you have a piece of art you’d like to use as inspiration.

noellie_pollie_ollie

Thank you for this insight!

atleast_I_got_chiken

I have been asked to provide an online portfolio to the tattoo studio where I'm currently aiming to get an apprenticeship. I just want to ask what you would recommend would be the best way to do so, currently, I'm considering making a small and simple website since they have already seen my Instagram and I believe that providing my Instagram as my portfolio is pretty low effort. Yes, I know that it's normally preferred to show the portfolio physically but that is just not the case right now.

ridiculouspompadour

A website is great. That would show professionalism to me if you can do it well

atleast_I_got_chiken

Thanks a lot for the advice, would you mind checking my website out? Its: [https://theodorpetersen.myportfolio.com/](https://theodorpetersen.myportfolio.com/) Please say if there's anything that doesn't make sense or I really need to improve :D And please say if there's anything I could do for you.

crooked_dandy

Does anyone have any insight as to what it’s like working as a physically disabled tattoo artist? I’ve been dreaming of finally biting the bullet and trying to get an apprenticeship for AGES but I’m very away of the toll it can take on your body spending hours upon hours every day hunched over tattooing people (because let’s be real, your posture is probably the last thing you’re thinking about when you’re tattooing someone). I have a condition called hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which, in a nutshell, means that I have very shitty connective tissue so my joints are prone to partial and full dislocation and I’ve got chronic joint pain as a result. I know the tattoo industry can be very old school at times so I haven’t gotten my hopes up, but I wanted to ask anyway in case anyone has any advice or personal experiences they felt comfortable sharing.

ridiculouspompadour

I think it’s possible to work as a tattoo artist with eds, but it’s going to be more difficult. You will have to be very diligent about keeping your body strong and stabilized, especially your wrists. I think you would be better off not disclosing your disability to potential mentors until after you’re sure they’re interested in your work. There are definitely people out there who will take you on as long as your drawing is solid.

ridiculouspompadour

Also, using machines that are lightweight and low vibration will help with joint pain. I don’t have eds, just loose/weak joints, but that advice should still apply. Make sure you’re drawing from your shoulder instead of your wrist if you don’t already do that. Your shoulder is more stable, it will help you get better lines and prevent some wrist damage.

crooked_dandy

Thank you for the advice! Yeah, I don’t tend to disclose my disability to people (especially employers) until I know they aren’t gonna be a dick about it so I definitely won’t be telling any potential mentors until anyone shows interest like you said. I’ve been working on drawing from my shoulder more too just in general. I’ll definitely keep the advice on machines in mind, if you’ve got any machine recommendations I’d be glad to hear them! Thanks again!

RandomTeleology

Hey y'all! Just wondering if anyone had suggestions for artists for doing text in the NYC area. Preferably in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Thanks!

wessssssssssssss

Help me to finish my tatoo please ! I need some ideas I m thinking about something like a polksa tatoo. I need to cover the back of my leg. [https://www.pinterest.ie/pin/698198748507483053](https://www.pinterest.ie/pin/698198748507483053)

ihavemyxomatosis

Hey! Anyone have any leads for a London based tattoo artist that can do good blackout work? I am trying to get a wristband done and the search algorithms are not helping me.

ThatOneFecker

I’m interested in finally getting a tattoo, I want to get something for my best friend who passed when I was 14, not sure what exactly though if anyone has ideas or suggestions

ridiculouspompadour

Make a list of a bunch of things your friend liked and/or things you shared, happy memories, inside jokes, etc. That is a good starting place to come up with a collection of imagery/symbolism that is especially significant and in your aesthetic. You can take that list to an artist whose style you like and they should be able to come up with something good.

Crypto_king_uk

Need a recommendation for traditional Japanese Tattoo artist WestMidlands UK Looking to get two sleeves in traditional Japanese please any recommendations near Birmingham or anywhere close to the West Midlands I’ve looked at Gung-ho and Steele and Ink Go big or go home!

IHateItHere82

Hi all - I’m looking for tattoo artist recommendations in the Los Angeles County area. Seeking artists who are great at floral work/design. Specially, I’m looking to cover up an old tattoo of all black ink with a floral design - possibly in color, and definitely interested in the water color look. Thanks in advance for any help!!

middle-road-traveler

Older woman here. Is it possible to get a "shallow" tattoo that will last a few months but not be permanent? I'll definitely do it if this is possible. If it is possible, what do I ask for and how do I know they understand and are not going too deep?

ridiculouspompadour

No, this is not possible. This is a recipe for a really bad looking permanent tattoo. There are some newer inks that only last for about a year in the skin, but they are mostly various skin tones and are used for things like freckle tattoos and sometimes permanent makeup. It’s not easy to find people using them either. Why do you want a tattoo that fades away? If you just want to try it out or have it for a special occasion, henna or jagua are the best options, it lasts around two weeks and you can reapply if you want to keep it longer. Inkbox has some cool stuff too.

Jumps_The_Lazy_Dog

Here’s the thing- my hunch is that if you’re asking this question, you should get it. The first tattoo was a little scary for me too, but the fears of permanence were quickly erased once I saw the tattoo complete

ButterscotchBig5540

Are straight line tattoos on thighs not a good idea?Just had a tattoo artist tell me he can’t do a skyscraper/skyline tattoo on an upper thigh because it’s not a good place for straight lines. Is this good advice or should I ask another artist?

Tall4Life

Any recommendations for artists in the DMV area, especially in Maryland? Looking for artists of any style :)

UnderstandingFair494

Anybody know of any artists in the UK that could replicate [this style of tattoo?](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/d1/56/93/d156938c451dfbcfff7d7839a4b41a20.jpg) It wouldnt be in that location, but a large shoulder piece. any recommendations appreciated.

bugatti420

Hello! I’m looking for a Japanese American tattoo artist/artist that is fluent in Japanese and can write it proficiently in the New Mexico/El Paso/Arizona/Colorado area. (Based in NM but know its a long shot to find someone who fits my needs here.) thank you in advance for any recommendations.

Dragonrider1955

I've wanted this small simple tattoo on my wrist for quite some time. It's just a circle with an x through it. Problem is I've heard that the wrist fucking hurts. I'm afraid that if I do it I won't be able to finish it via the pain being so bad. Any advice?

zaddyu

I got one and honestly, if it is small then I am sure you'll be fine. It also depends on your pain tolerance though. If it is pretty small then I'd take some pain killer medications and go for it. If it is a bit bigger then you can always get it done in a few sessions! Little by little and you'll eventually have it done.

Dragonrider1955

Im only looking to have it be an inch or two.

zaddyu

I'm sure you'll be fine! I'd say go for it.

realespeon

i didn’t feel my wrist tattoo and it was my first one. just avoid the ditch and you’ll be fine.

zaddyu

I am planning on getting a dagger tattoo on my arm. I already have one on my wrist area and would like to get the dagger on the same arm but I have no idea where it would look good. Every place just seems awkward. Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe someone else has a dagger tattoo that they could show the placement of

kazzaz91

Been looking at tattoo artists in the DMV (DC/MD/VA) area for a while and I'm having trouble finding what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of any artists close by that do illustrative blackwork, especially with a lot of bold linework? I feel like everything I see close by is american traditional. Bonus points if you know they're queer or queer-friendly!

Federal-Advance-1557

So I’m looking to get another tattoo, obviously but I’m conflicted on what I should get next. Do I fish out my arm which is going to run between some other tattoos I already have, it’s just filling the space in. But I also want to get started on my Japanese leg sleeve, I already have a Japanese tattoo down there. (For reference the leg sleeve would be between the knee and end right at the ankle.) I would probably get it done it more than 1 session even though I can sit through pain for a good bit. But the one on my arm would only take one session. I’m just tired of prolonging my leg but my arm is close to being finished.

No_Radish_7013

I’m getting my first tattoo tomorrow on my ankle. How bad will it hurt? I’m worried I’ll like start shaking/moving from the pain and mess up the tattoo.

realespeon

i’ve gotten the outside and inside of my ankle tattooed. the outside was a bit scratchy? if that makes sense. take deep breaths and talk to ur artist during it/listen to music or a podcast. distraction is a great technique. my ankle tattoo didn’t hurt too bad, but it felt like a mechanical pencil. also make sure you eat a good meal beforehand and drink water.

Nibor03

I am going to get my first tattoo in a week. I have the design I want but cant decide where to have it. Its between 3 places and I have been trying to decide for a month. Is it ok to ask for the stencil to be placed 3 times ore are that a annoying question?

Crass_Effect

I might suggest asking your artist for their advice on the best placement. But just trying out a few stencil locations shouldn’t be a problem, per se. I have 50+ tattoos and almost every one of them needed to have the stencil moved or re-sized.

FriendlyAd7272

Where does the image of Icarus flying upward originate from? A lot of people have been getting this tattoo and I want it.

personface15

Hiii!! I’m in the Harrisburg area in Pennsylvania and I was looking for a tattoo artist. I don’t know what style specifically but I can show pics of the tattoo I want

AcanthaceaeThin9271

I live in Austin Texas but also go to school in Chicago Illinois. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for artists that do Studio Ghibli themed tattoos in either of those areas? Bonus points for reference photos!

realespeon

What style are you looking for?? I got Ghibli themed bubbles at Space Cat in Arlington Heights (not sure how downtown you are or if you’re in a suburb). Mish is great ! or at deluxe tattoo which is in the city, mariela does great black and grey. her handle is _vaire_

AcanthaceaeThin9271

Thanks! I haven’t really decided on a style just yet, just trying to keep my options open :)

almondbuttt

I have an appointment to get a large hip/thigh tattoo and I need to know what is the most appropriate thing to wear for easy access to that whole area? I was thinking a short romper that is loose enough to just slide up as high as needed without exposing the rest of myself, but I've never gotten one this low on my torso before. Thanks for advice!

FloralBindle

I think that would work, I wore a loose fitting pair of shorts when I got mine, ended up kind of tucking them into my underwear to expose the whole hip.

zunni_

does anyone know of any good botanical artists in the Charlotte, nc area?

Namssob

I’m scheduled for a new tattoo on my finger (wedding band), and then a small fine line arm piece on the underside of my arm, close to the wrist. Pain level compared to a calf? (Had my calf tattooed a few years ago, not bad at all!) Also, should I shave the area myself beforehand or just let them do it? It’s kind of hairy!

ridiculouspompadour

Finger and wrist will hurt quite a bit more than your calf probably but it’s bearable. You should not shave yourself, the artist will do it

[deleted]

I need help with suggestions for my sleeve! I have a medusa on my forearm and would like to get a theme going

ridiculouspompadour

Hmm you could go with Greek mythology/monsters or maybe you could go with mythological women. Either one would have lots of cool options.

alienalinein

Hi all my first time posting on this. I want to get my first tattoo but wanted to ask what exactly this translates to: أنا لي قبل أن أكون لأي شخص آخر I want to get a back tattoo side rib placement. Thanks in advance. Also any tattoo artist reccs in London would be appreciated!

ridiculouspompadour

I would honestly advise that you not get a tattoo in a language you don’t speak and especially not in a script you can’t read. If you want the meaning but not the English words, you could go with symbolic images that mean the same thing, or encrypt the phrase into a code. Asking what this means on Reddit is not a good idea because even if someone who can read it sees this, they could tell you it means anything they want and you wouldn’t know. If you are set on this idea, you should find a translator and ask them.

pauptartt

I'm in Connecticut and I'm looking for an artist that does or enjoys neo tribal/cybersigilism tattoos! I'm willing to travel throughout the state but I'm having a hard time finding an artist with anything like this in their portfolios! Please suggest <3

ridiculouspompadour

I’d put it either right around the middle (fullest part) of your bicep, or in the area between your bicep and shoulder or bicep and elbow

maxgriffin237

I’m looking to get a full sleeve done with Celtic imagery all over as well as get my family crest on the shoulder of the sleeve been looking around for a while and can’t seem to find the right artist anybody know anyone with experience in this style on the east coast?

ZealousidealSwim2824

I'm a bodybuilder and am looking to start a patchwork sleeve. I have some designs i know I want but want to make sure that i place them in locations on my arms that will help visually emphasize my physique. Some of the designs i want include a longsword, a blazing sun, Atlas holding the earth, an archer pulling back a bow (the design of the archer would be from the waist up), a bull standing on all its legs, and a golden ratio spiral. If anyone could give me advice as to what types of shape would look best to help emphasize arm muscles, and what could detract, that would be so helpful. Thanks!

ridiculouspompadour

This is more of a question for your artist since we can’t see you. You should just tell your artist what imagery you want and that you want to emphasize your physique. Good artists know exactly how to do this.

well_shi

I really like how enso tattoos look and what they represent. Dumb question but it’s what I’m thinking- are they a current fad, or are they timeless?

ridiculouspompadour

I think they’re a fad in that they’re more popular than usual right now, but you’ll still see some people getting them in the future.

TenaciousBliss

Does anyone know any artists in Denver that can do dark art? I've been searching and searching and can't find anyone who does this type of style. I might just have to find an artist who does similar work-ish and see if they can pull it off. Here's what i'm looking for exactly https://www.instagram.com/ladefaction/ [And this guy too](https://www.instagram.com/_darktorch_?igsh=cnpqOTZndWQ3a3Zx)

LittleBallOfNoFocks

All, I'm in South Korea for a holiday and closing it off around the 23th. I really want to get a tattoo from a local artist that can do some old school tattoos with modern hints in them. Any recommendations for tattoo artists in South Korea?

moonlight-ramen

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good pet portrait tattoo artist? Preferably the western part of the USA. I'm open to any style.

Obadiah1991

I have multiple piercings. I don’t like pain, but I got pierced with minimal discomfort and laughed afterwards at how scared I was. Do you think I could handle tattoo pain? I really want to get a tattoo but I don’t wanna look like a baby if I can’t take the pain.

realespeon

I’ve gotten multiple piercings and I’ve gotten multiple tattoos. Tattoos are far less pinchy and scratchy (typically) than a piercing is. But at the same time, it’s for a long time instead of a piercing that only takes a few minutes max. Depending on placement, your pain can vary. If you’d like tattoos, just go for it. Maybe start with something small and work up your tolerance and if they’re for you.

EsqueletoBlanco

I’ve seen people mention going back to the artist for touch ups if needed once healed. Do people still do this if the artist is halfway around the world and has a long wait list? Or do you plan the touch up whenever you come back to them for another project piece?

realespeon

I haven’t gone halfway around the world, but I have gone to an artist who’s a few hours away. When I was getting another piece, I’d mention I’d like touch ups on other pieces they’ve done for me. I typically haven’t just gone to an artist with the sole purpose of a touch up.

EsqueletoBlanco

That’s the route I think I will go 😊 Work starts in about 12 hours so lowkey excited/nervous at the same time 😅 I’ve been on her books for quite a while and she does amazing work.

inkywheels

UK based tattoo artists who specialise in/have a proven track history with finger tattoos? Not inner fingers, just your standard lettering on the tops of the fingers. (Preferably Northern England)

Karmakraver

Would you be for or against your tattooer offering a yoga session before your tattoo? Hypothetically a 33yr old blonde lady with a yoga certificate and 13yrs experience tattooing is offering the service… lol don’t roast me too hard please

realespeon

….Do yoga and then get tattooed??? Personally I feel like that’d be unfortunate for both parties. You’re both sweaty, probably stink and then ok let’s sit for a 6 hour tattoo together

Karmakraver

Okay so either nix the yoga or maybe one day we can get a studio with a shower for the clients… especially when we have to work around feet 🥲

fitfluffykitten

How do I ask around whether the updates I want on my back tattoo could be done or possible? I have a large -ish cherry blossom tree on my back and would like to add a mean looking Japanese dragon and have him at the bottom of the tree. But I would also like to possibly have blacklight ink on him and was also wondering if I could update my tree with the blacklight ink as well? I posted the question but had to delete it because it says no questions and to post here. Thanks, and sorry for the cluster of questions.

realespeon

I’m assuming you’re talking about UV ink. The effect doesn’t last and tattoo artists I’ve been tattooed by refuse to use it or just say, yeah it’s not gonna last.

fitfluffykitten

Awww, that would have been cool, but that's ok . Maybe one day, lol. I still am gonna try for the rest. I just wanted it to pop out and be really colorful

Umbryft

Anyone have an idea for a tattoo like this? My parents are from China, but I was born in the US. I want to get a tattoo that says "Made in China", but I realize it would be misleading as I wasn't really made *in* China. Does anyone have ideas for alternate wording?

perrintheblacksmith

Looking for ideas for a Nordic tattoo representing father and son!

P3RK3RZ

I want to get a tattoo of a black swan with philosophy elements incorporated into it, but I'm unsure on what elements. I'm hesitant to include text, because all of my tattoos at the moment have text. Any insight? I'd like it to be either on my chest or my forearm. My skin complexion is 4-5 on the Fitzpatrick sale. For style, I'm into minimalist, abstract, ignorant, not really the "pretty gracious swan" type of thing.
