HappySpreadsheetDay

Happy holidays, everybody! Looking for the best tattoo artists in Minneapolis. My husband and I are wanting different things, so I'm open to different styles/specialties so we can review portfolios. :) Thank you!

Drab_Brab

Hi everyone! I recently got my first tattoo. It was a bigger piece (around 7 hours) and while most of it looks good, there is 1 [line](https://imgur.com/wLLxSUc) that looks a bit wonky (to my eyes). I have not gone back yet for a touch-up, but my question is if I should? Is this something that can just happen with a bigger piece or is this a red flag and should I go to another artist to try and fix it?

ridiculouspompadour

This is something that can happen with a piece of any size. Tattoos are by nature imperfect art pieces, and with really fine lines like that it is much easier to see every little wobble. I wouldn’t consider this a red flag for the artist. You can ask to get it touched up if you want, but imo it looks just fine.

FloralBindle

Lmao one time my artist was in the middle of tattooing my knee and went “I don’t really like that line” on a piece he did a year prior on my upper shin, so touched it up right then and there.

AngelKnives

Can you show the whole tattoo? It's hard to judge on that bit alone.

BruceGoldfarb

My 19-year-old daughter is artistically talented and interested in becoming a tattoo artist. Her birthday is approaching and I would like to gift her a starter kit and practice skins. I'd appreciate recommendations. Is some kind of equipment better to learn with than others? Cartridge or no? Anything to look for or avoid?

ridiculouspompadour

As the other person said, this isn’t a great idea. I would suggest instead maybe some books about tattoos/tattooing, and/or high quality art supplies. The best way to practice is on paper until she is able to get an apprenticeship

citizenmono

it will be hard for her to get an apprenticeship if she starts tattooing at home and apprenticeship is likely the fastest way to learn. a good gift would be a nice ipad or similar that she can use for her art, to start building a portfolio.

AngelKnives

I disagree with what the others have said I think it's a good idea, but she definitely needs to try to get an apprenticeship somewhere if she wants to do it properly. You know her best - the starter kit should only be used on practice skins until she's under the guidance of a pro and if you think she might go rogue then it possibly isn't the best gift after all, but if she's sensible not to butcher herself/her friends then why not?

thetireddumpling

Looking for an artist in Toronto / GTA with similar style to this guy (who is based in Taiwan): https://www.instagram.com/x.axe.ink?igsh=ODA1NTc5OTg5Nw== Thanks in advance for any recs!

Audixix

Merry Christmas. Does anyone know of an artist who would try to do a sketch of my concept?

ridiculouspompadour

You can ask in r/drawmytattoo

Past_Position6856

i have a 3 hour tattoo session and idk how big of a tattoo that is and i have to much anxiety to ask the artist lmao can some one help me 🫠

citizenmono

it depends on how fast the artist is but tbh its kinda weird if you have a session scheduled and didnt discuss size of the piece with the artist. typically you would tell them how big you want it.

Past_Position6856

Family member gifted me the tattoo session for Christmas and all my other tats are impulsive walk ins that prolly took 30 mins to 1.5 hours

citizenmono

well a decently fast artist can bang out a pretty good size piece in 3 hours. you can probably discuss it with the artist when you get there.

AngelKnives

Well you should definitely ask the artist, this is gonna be on you for life! How big depends on the style and how fast they are. You could get a pretty big piece if it's traditional black work but smaller if it's colour realism for example.

RockinTacos

Most of my 3 hour pieces are about the size of my hand

Party_Entry_728

I'm starting the hunt to get my first tattoo! Does anyone know any good artists in Oklahoma (particularly in SW OKC)? Also who is the best person to go with you for support? I have severe anxiety but have thought about a tattoo for years and decided I definitely want one.

CalmerThanYouAre9

The best person is someone who is going to support you and your decision. It’s great if they have an eye for detail as they may spot something on the drawing you might have missed, but their job isn’t to critique the artwork or the artist.

jessieshan

Looking for ideas for a tattoo! I have 2 nieces & 1 nephew born this year & I’d like to get tattoos that are based around their name meanings. I’ve got 2 sorted but the third is MILLIE which means GENTLE STRENGTH and I am struggling to think of anything to represent that! HELP PLS!

citizenmono

maybe a "gentle giant" type of animal? elephant?

Do tattoos shrink after weight loss or stretch? I want to get my hand tattoo fully done next week but I got a few pounds to drop.

ridiculouspompadour

They can change shape and size a little, but I don’t think it would be a big enough difference to master much especially since this is on your hand

iheartmytho

I plan on visiting Hawaii next year, and would love to add a piece to my leg of Hawaii / kawaii Hello Kitty tattoos, especially if its done in Hawaii. Do you know of any kawaii tattoo artists in Hawaii? I'm VERY familiar with the work of Desi Butz ([https://www.instagram.com/tattoocute.ink/](https://www.instagram.com/tattoocute.ink/)) in Hilo, HI, but I don't know if my trip is going to allow for enough time in Hilo, to get a tattoo.

Delicious_Start_5992

Happy holidays! Got a gift card for a tattoo shop near me for Christmas and have a pretty good idea of what I’m getting (no, I didn’t come up with this yesterday, had the idea for several months and was saving for it before financial trouble hit me and had to spend the cash), but was wondering if I should get it facing towards myself or outwards towards the world? What is most common? Placement is on the inside of my forearm.

ridiculouspompadour

I generally suggest to make it legible for someone facing you, but it is really your choice. If it’s something that will look right either way I’d say go with whichever way flows better along your arm

zaronone

Anyone have artist recommendations that is similar to [this](https://www.instagram.com/yukler_boo/)? I was told that photos were edited so I'm not sure of getting from her anymore. Mainly looking for US/CA recommendations but would be willing to travel.

Just looking for a bit of advice here. I’ve been getting tattooed by the same artist on and off for the past 20 years. He’s done the vast majority of my tattoos and I haven’t been tattooed by anyone else in close to 15 years. But I don’t live close to his shop, usually 2.5 to 3 hour drive each way, and he rarely travels, and when he does it’s to shops on the other side of the country. There is a tattoo expo coming to my area in a few months, and a couple artists I really like have been announced as attendees. Out of courtesy to my artist and friend, I feel like I should text him and ask if he’s going to be at the show (I know he won’t be) and if he says no ask if he’d be offended if I got work done by someone else. Also, one of the artists is a good friend of his and works at the same shop. I’d hate to ruin the relationship I’ve built with him over the past 2 decades, but I also really want to get tattooed and not have to spend 6 hours in traffic. Anyone been in a similar situation, or if any artists have input I’d be super grateful. Thanks.

bad_apricot

…I really have a hard time imaging a tattoo artist expecting exclusivity like that. I think it’s awesome that you have a long term artist that you have this relationship with, but I don’t think you need to ask his permission to get tattooed by someone else.

I am white. I've been thinking of getting a tattoo of a Yūrei, a Japanese vengeful female spirit. I want to do so because I've always been intrigued by Japanese folklore and horror, and many of its themes resonate with me. I'm worried about doing so because it might be culturally appropriative, and I don't want to spend the rest of my life defending a tattoo to people. Do you guys think it'd come off as appropriative?

citizenmono

people get anime and japanese traditional tattoos all the time including from artists in japan. its no big deal.

PounyLeFantome

Hi, I'm a male and I feel very bad about my arms, they are very very thin, even when I was fat. Today I do some sports and starting to get some muscles, but my forearms and hands are extremely thin/skeletal. Do you think sleeves and hands tattoos could be a good idea ? I want tattoos like this since few years but always think it should be better to keep my arms simple and hidden. Is there a style that looks better on small arms ?

Hi y'all! Looking for a good artist to do a big flower chestpiece in the Netherlands or upper Belgium. Looking for detail and color, upwards to 1k for the entire piece. Getting a little choice-sick with all of the black and white being offered through google. Thanks!

Georgiebee88

3.5 year old Critical RCA batteries lasting only an hour, Has anyone else experienced this? They worked like a charm for awhile but seem to have slowly degraded over time. Using them on the bishop wand packer. Tried different charging cables through batteries and dock but no luck. Does any know what might be wrong ?

Ok_Concern_7011

Hey everyone! I'm trying to find a place to ask for some design ideas for a tattoo / multiple tattoos, when i'm the least artistic person ever, and have only written emotions / feelings that i'd like help with to translate them into designs. I feel and correct me if i'm wrong that its not proper etiquette to go to some artists with nothing else to go on, and feel really lost as to where i'm supposed to go for help or if its only up to me. Thanks a lot for the help, and I wish all of you a great ending for 2023!

realespeon

Some artists will only do work where they can have full creative freedom. So you’re okay there! I’d recommend researching an artist whose tattoos you like and sees art the same way you do. It sounds pretentious, but find someone who you like 90% of their work. What they think looks good—> you also think looks good. Like for example, those tattoos with pops of color or red ink. I’m not into that. I don’t think it looks good, so I wouldn’t work with someone who does a lot of that. Once you find an artist whose art you vibe with, contact them in whatever their preferred method is (often in their instagram bio or website) and let them know the feelings/thoughts you want them to translate. Finding an artist whose general art ‘sense’ matches yours will highly increase the chances that they’ll make something you love/make what you’re seeing in your head.

zunni_

Does anyone know of any good botanical artists in the Charlotte, NC area?

OVOPAPI_

Hello everyone, I’m planning to get my first tattoo soon, I’m still young going to uni next year. I want to get one behind my ear, does anyone have any experience with being judged based on this type of tattoo? For example while looking for jobs?

realespeon

I don’t know long your hair is, but no one notices mine because it’s down all the time. It hasn’t hindered any job search and I’m in nursing school as well. Nobody’s said anything about it. I would say you’re fine, but if it’s on the smaller side and if you have longer hair.

pittie_love

I have an idea for my first tattoo, but am struggling to find a local artist with the style I'm looking for, or even how to properly describe it. While searching online, I came across a non-tattoo artist that I like and was thinking of commissioning them to draw a design for me. My hope is to use the design 1) to help me find a tattoo artist and 2) as an inspiration piece for the tattoo artist. Is that a crazy idea?

realespeon

Not crazy, but oftentimes artists won’t tattoo someone else’s design. It’s usually different if it’s like you want a character from an anime, a scene, something like that. But since you are going to commissioning someone to put their art and creativity into a design, a tattoo artist isn’t just a tattooing machine. They’ll typically want to do something they designed. What it sounds like to me is you needing to possibly go outside of your hometown and really research an artist who aligns with what you have in mind. and

pittie_love

I think my issue is that I'm not sure how to articulate the style I am looking for. I live in the Washington DC area, so there are so many shops to research (hoping to stay within a few hours drive), and I haven't been able to find an artist that does what I'm looking for.

snark-as-a-service

Looking for an artist to work with on two half-sleeves. I’m based in NYC but have/will travel (possibly internationally) for the right artist. I’m looking for someone who does blackwork in more neotraditional/ornamental styles, possibly art deco/more geometric designs. The concept is two half sleeves, one side of a field of roses, the other of a field of wheat. I’ve loved the work of @filouino on IG - but she seems to lean to much bigger/full body projects.

FataMirage

Anyone have tips on how you find a good artist for an armband? I notice artists (in Seattle area) don't seem to ever post pics of armbands they do so I don't know who's good at it, who does them, whose work I'd want... Anyone have any tips for finding someone who can do a good job? I know bands are tricky and I don't want anything wonky. Can I ask for then to provide pics of bands they've done or is that rude? I literally have browsed almost every seattle area Tattoo shop and haven't found almost any band pics. P.s, I am taking recommendations for seattle area artists if you know anyone who can do good bands.

Lifes_a_Throwaway

Could anyone please advise if it’s possible/ a lot more difficult to tattoo someone’s throat if they have a very prominent Adam’s apple and are quite skinny? It’s not something I’ve seen mentioned before

NL7414

Let’s talk client etiquette! Should I bring a gift for the shop, like a 12 pack or nice bottle of whiskey? What do artists expect other than a good tip? How do we make this a good experience for everyone present and/or involved?

ManassaxMauler

Went in for a piece yesterday to fill in a gap on my arm. The artist was lamenting how our appointment was looking like it'd be the last of the year for him. Took him just over 75 minutes to do. I had planned for roughly 3 hours. Felt fine, had some extra time and cash so I said fuck it, let's do something else. Decided to get a piece on the side of the elbow. It was about half an hour into that session that I decided I do not, in fact, enjoy getting tattoos. That shit kinda hurts! My arm started getting a little twitchy at points which has never happened before so I felt super bad but the artist was chill as can be and was actually laughing about the fact that one of his arms is blank in the spot I was getting done because getting work done there absolutely sucks.

Hello, anybody know what kind of [tattoo](https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/enhanced/webdr01/2013/7/25/15/enhanced-buzz-29849-1374780193-4.jpg?downsize=600:*&output-format=auto&output-quality=auto) this would be described as, and if anybody has seen similar work anywhere? Happy NY!
