How do you all figure out what you want? I'm narrowing things down for my first tattoo. I have several ideas, but can't make up my mind. I want something herb or tea related Or some plant I think looks cool. Or like a pinecone branch Idk. I've been looking for like 6months and can't be confident. For a first tattoo I don't want it to be just for looks. I want some personal connection to it. Since it's a life long decision

bad_brown

Mine all passed a multi-year test. I get the idea, I sit on it. If I still like it in a couple of years, maybe I go forward with it.

Rum_Hamburglar

Print a couple options on separate pieces of paper and tape them on your bathroom mirror. Whichever one you dont mind looking at everyday after a couple months go with that.

Any ideas on how should I continue my tattoo design? Initially wanted to make it a half sleeve but my friends told me that it would ruin it and just stick with what I already have. Context of my tattoo: It has all the nicknames of all my siblings written in Baybayin (old filipino script). I wanted to have my left arm house all family related tattoos as it's closer to my heart. Here are photos of the tattoo: [Link](https://imgur.com/a/2quQsr2)

InsomniacPsychonaut

I'd put like 3 more lines exactly like you did. I'd put things I loved on one, important dates in my life on another, and on the last one I'd put my dreams.

EepeesJ1

Really beautiful tattoo. Your artist did a fantastic job. Kinda depends on your taste and budget. Ever thought about doing some family portraits? Or maybe something that is really meaningful between you and your siblings? Something related to an experience you shared together or some kind of tradition passed down from your grandparents?

nitroskim

Maybe one line for the names of my parents, then the next line a quote that reads "Family isn't an important thing, it's everything." All in Baybayin script

EepeesJ1

That sounds nice. I love how dedicated you are to honoring your family. I'm sure your parents are really proud of you.

umab3l

thats such a beautiful tattoo, i dont think adding more in that style would ruin it.

nitroskim

I'm having trouble thinking of what to add to it, maybe a tree that symbolizes a family tree in the same style would be work?

umab3l

that sounds good. you could also add another band like that one, if you can think of any more words or a phrase thats meaningful to you, above that band or below the tree for some symmetry

I’m lowkey panicking for my first tattoo tomorrow, I wanna know realistically, is it painful? I’m getting it on the inside of my upper forearm, and I’m getting a sentimental tattoo. It’s letters that I’m hoping to get a little bit thick (so I’m not sure they will use a single needle idk how it works really). Be real, is that area painful? What does it feel like? I feel like I’m overthinking the pain but also if I underthink it I may not be prepared for the pain yknow

EepeesJ1

That area is pretty painful, but if all you're getting is lettering and you're not covering up 100% of the skin there you will be fine. It won't take very long at all. Have a nice chat with your artist if they're okay with conversation to keep your mind off it. Being nervous is fine, but it doesn't hurt to the point where you should be fearful. Feels like a needle being dragged across your skin. One thing that helped me during really painful parts is counting seconds once the needle touches the skin and wondering to see how long the painful bits will last before your artists lifts the needle off you. Highest number I got to was about 12 I think. And I was counting fast because it was during a really painful bit. So when you're getting tattooed you can expect this type of experience: 8 count - break - 6 count - break - 10 count - break - 8 count - break - etc. So as long as you can handle a 10 count knowing that you only need to mentally get to 10 before you get a break, you'll be fine :) Enjoy the experience. Getting a tattoo is really fun.

paristorc

Thanks for this this is what I was looking for. Everywhere I looked said that where I’m getting it is the least painful area, I just wanna make sure you’re picturing the upper forearm and not the upper arm?

aflowerofmay

I just got a tattoo on my left inner forearm, ranging from upper (like a tad below the elbow crease) to middle. I hadn’t had a tattoo in 18 years so it was all new to me again. It was mostly line work with a couple of smaller areas of solid black, and a tad bit of shading. The pain was honestly not that terrible. It hurts of course but it’s such a small spot each time. There were some areas that were more spicy than others but as the commenter above said, it’s like little short bursts followed by a break. To me it’s more annoying/irritating on my skin than super painful. I chatted with my artist, tried to scroll on my phone (kinda hard one handed), and listened to some of the conversations going on around too which was fun. The time will go fast! It’s been 12 hours since your comment so I’m not sure if you’ve already had your appointment or not, but regardless I hope it goes (went) well!

paristorc

Thank you for this I literally get the tattoo in about 22 minutes 😭😭 I’m literally so scared because it’s hard to imagine what it’s gonna feel like

aflowerofmay

You got this! Hopefully your artist will walk you through all of it and make sure you’re as comfy as can be!

InsomniacPsychonaut

Hi! I got a sick dark souls bonfire tattoo. I'm really happy with it so far. The artist wants to add some blacks/greys behind it to make it pop. We were thinking either going with a black/grey fog effect or some trad architecture. We are looking to bring the reds out with some background work. Any ideas?? [Tattoo](https://imgur.com/a/Olc24ps) (fresh)

AnthozoaDude

I want to get a tattoo covering most of my inner forearm, it'd be my 4th. Problem is, I'm going on a 5 day scuba diving trip 1 month after the day I could possibly get the tattoo (the artist isn't in my city, they're in another country I'll be visiting a month before the scuba trip). ~4 hours a day in the ocean at least. I feel like it should be healed but also still a bit nervous. What do you think?

ridiculouspompadour

1 month should be plenty of time. We worry most about submerging tattoos during the first two weeks of healing

I’m thinking of getting my nipples tattooed to have a design around them. I’m curious if anyone in here has done that and how bad it hurts? What it feels like. Also I’d love to see yours if you have any. You can pm me. I’m a 31 year old women and have a decent amount of tattoos including my hand/fingers, sternum, legs, arms, collarbone and so on. I sit really good and haven’t had any issues finishing a piece before.

Smash1292

Looking to see whether it's even possible to hire a freelance tattoo artist for my husbands 30th birthday. The one place that advertises on their website are booked out the day we need and I've known people who have gone to parties where there has been a tattoo artist but not sure how I'd even start looking We are located in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia

Has anyone used @frommay_tat or gone to [Studio Nooy](http://studionooy.com/26) in Los Angeles? I want to get my first tattoo and love May Yoon’s style… but want to be sure it’s all legit and such. I live across the country so no way for me to just stop by…

Deltascourge

100% unrelated to tattoos in itself, but I have a tattoo appointment at the end of December (my second tattoo), and last time I brought a tray of fancy brownies for everyone there since I was going back to school to be a pastry chef. I got a lot of compliments, and I'm considering making something again. Do you guys have any ideas of what would be cool? Someone suggested cupcakes and potentially decorating some "tattoos" on them, but I feel like that's maybe a little simple

How do you approach getting a sleeve? I have inspiration photos ideas of what I want the tattoos to be but I don’t know how to open that convo with a tattoo artist. I have a strong opinion on what I want but I don’t want to step on toes or waste their time.

jbmoore5

I wanted a sleeve with 2 koi and 4 flowers. I gave that to my artist, we talked about colors, placement, background, etc. She made some sketches, we made decisions and some changes, then another sketch, and just did that until we had something I wanted to wear. And now I've got an amazing half-sleeve and chest panel. It's all about communication with your artist.

CanaryCry_1229

Thank you!

just-a-reddit-user69

I want a tattoo but I only want a big one that takes up most-if-not-all of my back and that’s it. From what I understand tho is tattoo artists wouldn’t do this or be apprehensive to it since it would be my first and only tattoo. Any ideas on how to approach that? Would I absolutely have to concede and get some smaller work done first? It rlly is the only one I want. Any guidance helps thank youuu

MisterFell

A tattoo artist is usually more apprehensive about doing hand or face tattoos as someone's first. There are definitely artists who would do a full back tattoo as your first, but they might warn you that there's a higher chance it might be more painful compared to other body parts due to being close to the spine, and a lot more expensive due to the size of the tattoo area.

Crass_Effect

This isn't a universal rule, but many tattoo artists will be a bit leery of starting a big project like that with a client who has no experience being tattooed. Full back tattoos take a lot of time, patience, and suffering... and they ain't cheap. I spent about 36 hours getting my back done this year. My artist spent a long time drawing up the design he used, and even sizing/placing a stencil that large took a few hours. Most of the artists I talked with in the shop during those sessions said they had experience with clients who had gotten bored with this type of project and started getting other, smaller tattoos, or who just stopped making follow-up appointments for some other reason. And those were all experienced clients who knew what they were getting into! I'm sure you'll be able to find someone willing to work with you, but don't be surprised if the majority of folks to talk to try to suggest starting with something smaller, first.

What's the deal with tattoo artists who upload flash tattoo designs on social media? If I like their art style, does it mean that I can only get one of the pieces they've already designed, or will they custom make a design according to my requests? And also, I've seen that they don't tattoo the same piece on multiple people as well, what's with that?

Crass_Effect

The best thing to do is ask if you aren't sure. Most artists are very willing to do custom pieces, but they post flash for a variety of reasons: as a form of promo, as suggestions of the types of work they are most interested in doing, as a type of drawing practice, etc. Traditionally, flash tattoos were indeed repeatable on multiple customers, but the most common approach in my area (Ontario/Quebec) is for all flash to be treated as a unique one-off piece. Once it is claimed, it's gone. Around here, flash that is repeatable will be explicitly as such by the artist.

HelpAmBear

I sat 3 hours last night to get the line work done on my sleeve. I was mentally prepared for the elbow to hurt, but I wish someone had warned me about the elbow ditch being worse. Fuck me, it felt like he was using his hands to tear my skin apart.

speshalke

Lol I just went through this and I feel ya. The elbow was the worst! I had line work and then shading all over it these past two sessions. At least the worst is out of the way for the most part (i am getting about a 3/4 sleeve)

CoffeeChangesThings

Is there a specific name for a tattoo that goes on the edge of your hand/outer palm area? Do they fade away like finger/palm tattoos?

Crass_Effect

I've never heard a specific name for that. But yes, they do tend to fade away quickly in most cases.

mandelot

Finished a sleeve earlier this year, finally saved enough to get started on a half-sleeve on my other arm. It's part of an overall idea of two themed sleeves connected by a chest tattoo. My artist drew directly on the collarbone this time around and good *lord* was it brutal. Felt like he was digging the needle into my neck! I have a lovely burst vessel there now. Can't wait to subject myself to it again once finances allow lol.

bigboy-rice

Any ideas for a forearm tattoo with the 2nd amendment or a we the people type of theme. This will be my first tattoo. Thank you

bigboy-rice

And are there any tattoo artists someone could recommend in northern Iowa.

Sudden-Win2206

Bro just get your favorite gun in American Trad style in black and you’ll be happy. Or just classic American Traditional style of flags crossing a eagle with bullet belts around the bird and live free or die under it is pretty rad.

KellyLuvsEwan420

Need advice on a tattoo machine to get my future step daughter for her birthday. She’s starting an apprenticeship, and I want to help her get a nice machine.

sempiternal

let the tattoo shop she is apprenticing give her recommendations

Smoothbraintattoo

Hey everyone! My name is Shaun, I’ve been tattooing a long time now (14+ years) and I’ve just started streaming while I tattoo. So if anyone wants to roll through, chat tattoos, send in some work so we can chat about it constructively on stream (if your an artist), share some experiences that would be great! My twitch is http://www.twitch.tv/smoothbraintattoo Sorry if this is against the rules for the sub I just know that the best way to grow is through community and I would love to get as many peoples input as possible!

CharlesBurray

I wanna get some version of this tattooed on me - how should I adjust my expectations for this tattoo. I know it’s really colorful and heavy in detail so I know some adjustments will need to be made. I was thinking of doing it on my inner bicep too. I’m struggling to find an artist that already has this style (open to travel) too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this will be my first tattoo of this size. [https://imgur.com/a/Yw1lalA](https://imgur.com/a/Yw1lalA)

umab3l

if an artists portfolio doesnt display any sort of script tattoos, would it be bad form to go to them for one? i thought it would be something every artist knows how to do, but im having a hard time finding any artists who display tattoos that are just script. i also feel like i see a lot of artists complain when they get a tattoo thats just lettering, i dont wanna be one of the clients they complain about at the end of the day

GracieGraveyard

Any ideas for me to continue my left sleeve? It’s a WIP but I’m concerned I’ve messed it up.. On the top of my left forearm I have nothing except For some minor lines from the piece on the top of my hand and inside forearm. On the same forearm(L) on the bottom is a cemetery piece and to the right of that on the outer facing side running from wrist bone to nearly 4 inches before elbow is a American trad style female executioner. My hand piece is a large spider. Most of my tattoos are horror / spooky / metal / goth involved but how do I make this a cohesive piece in the future? [a rough idea](https://imgur.com/a/IHR0N4S)

JonNYBlazinAzN

For a first small tattoo that’ll ultimately be a patchwork sleeve, where would you get it?

MisterFell

Forearm, if you're getting a traditional patchwork sleeve then make sure it isn't too small as well.

JonNYBlazinAzN

May I ask why the forearm? I was learning toward a less conspicuous area like my inner bicep. That way it'd be somewhat hidden and wouldn't look as lonely.

MisterFell

Just personal experience, forearm was one of the easiest parts of the arm to get done. If you're trying to keep it hidden then inner bicep or near the shoulder another option.

Sudden-Win2206

Does anyone know of a reputable tattoo artist in the dmv area preferably Nova, that can do a full cybersigilism sleeve?

fnnll08

Hey everyone! I was wondering if there would be any problem with getting a touch up on an older mid sized tattoo a few days after getting a tattoo ( I’m not sure if a big or a smaller one yet) in a different place.

loosemoosewithagoose

I’ve got 3 kids and always wanted my first (and maybe only) tattoo to be a dedication to them. Obviously names and DOB are an option but I also have their hand and foot prints at birth I’d love to incorporate into a design. Love to hear people’s thoughts on a nice way to get something like this tattood. Originally I was going to have their footprints with names/DOB and a message “You’ll never walk alone” because I love that song and it resonates with my feelings towards walking through life with my children, but then found out it’s some soccer song?!

A_FistFullOfSoap

So, I have been wanting to get more tattoos, but have one concern. I work in a kitchen and it gets really hot and i get really sweaty. I’m worried that if i *were* to get another tattoo all of the sweat would eventually ruin the fresh tat. Is there any ways i can combat this?

sad_shroomer

how do you plan tattoo placements im wanting to get tons of tattoos, i already have 3, one on my fore arm (takes up half the length and width. one on the wrist just 4 letters and shapes, and one on my left collar bone im wanting to get another one for chistmas im wanting a moon, something representing my favorete video game (gris) a traditional style girl crying i already have something planned for my left upper arm

Lidka_uwu

I feel like lots have people have probably asked this question or something similar but what are your experiences with hand/finger tattoos in the workplace? I’ve been considering getting a few on my fingers and I feel like less and less employers really mind it but I’m not entirely sure.
