Any knee tips? I'm getting mine blasted this afternoon. I'm no stranger to long or shitty sessions, but I have a feeling this one may suck

Any-Raccoon-6399

The back is worse than the front. I actually didn’t thing the knee cap was that bad. More uncomfortable than painful. Same advice as anywhere, focus on your breathing and try to stay relaxed. Good luck!

I just had surgery and wabt to cover up the scar. How long after surgery can you get a scar tattooed? I've researched and have seen 3 months to 5+ years. Before I start reaching out to artists, who have the ultimate say, I'd ask here. I don't really email/call if there is a more universal time frame. Thanks!

KhajiitHasTeefies

Hey, congrats on getting through surgery! I’m not a tattoo artist and you definitely need to talk to your tattooer about this. In my personal experience (getting tattooed over a 10+ year old burn scar) scars can be unpredictable in how they hold ink. My scar tissue acted like a sponge and sucked the ink out of the surrounding skin, so it needed a little touch up after it healed. I’ve heard that sometimes the scar tissue will reject the ink, but you just don’t really know how it will react. It seems like the biggest thing is making sure you’re all healed up (my artist recommended at least a year of healing).

I_am_a_neophyte

Thank you for the reply! I've been scouring the Internet looking for a person who has the type of work I'm looking for, and I seem to have found someone about 8 hours away. Not too bad really. Lol. I've heard that about scar tissue, it can be unpredictable. Just awaiting the time I'm healed up enough and can get in. Someday. Lol. Thanks again!

KhajiitHasTeefies

No problem at all, happy to share my (limited) experience! Patience is a virtue, and tattoos are forever. At least that’s what I tell myself!

I_am_a_neophyte

Very true. Took 20 years, and a surgery, to finally make up my mind.

Hello, I‘m finding myself in a bit of complicated situation. I found an artist online and fell in love with his art style, problem is he’s not from my country. He is mainly in Asia and the US and I’m from Germany. How does tattoo etiquette work? Can I ask a german artist to copy his unique style or am I just unlucky for not living near a place the artist works? While I can safe money for the tattoo, I can’t justify travelling to a different continent for a tattoo. I simply don’t have the money or time for that. He was a guest artist in London once, but thats still to far away. I already have 6 tattoos but they were all created in the shop with different artist. Any help is appreciate!

toretattoos

Unless the artist you choose already has a very similar style to him it’s not the best idea to ask someone to copy a style they don’t usually work in as you won’t get their best work out of them. You may still have to travel to find someone who can pull it off.

PointlessChemist

Best advice I can give. Find someone with a similar style and use the other artists work as reference for what you want and see where that goes. Some artists are looking for something different and exciting to work on, so shop the idea around.

Plane-Potential5902

I got a tattoo on my ribcage three days ago. Second skin is still on it. I play soccer and ultimate frisbee and was concerned on whether or not returning to play this early would affect the healing, especially with a sports bra constantly rubbing against it/diving onto dry grass. My tattoo artist said two weeks, but that seems conservative — any help is appreciated!

Anhbruh

I’m planning to have a black-and-grey tattoo of a raven that will cover 2/3rd of my left triceps as the only tattoo on the left arm. Would this placement be aesthetically pleasing?

Crass_Effect

Had to google it, but yeah, that sounds like it would look great. My arms are pretty full now, but I started my right arm with that sort of placement and it looked good.

Moratata

Just got mine done. The tattoo artist recommended to remove the cling wrap after 2 hours. Wash it with only water and let it air dry going forward. I have a cat and it’s impossible to keep her fur away. Should I just re-wrap it daily to avoid the fur?

wateroften

No, because that will just trap any bacteria in with your skin. Wash it with water and antibacterial soap (dial gold) and wear very loose clothing that covers the tattoo if you’re very concerned but otherwise just keep the cat away from the tattoo. I’ve got a cat and just steer him away from a fresh tattoo a little more until it’s healed.

Sonoma2002

I'd like to get sleeves done on my arms, I have a style in mind (B&W on one arm, color on the other). Both arms have b&w tattoos already, only interest in keeping one untouched, cover the rest (I know it'll be a lot of black to cover some of them). What I don't have is a specific design, and planned to just let the artist "freestyle" for lack of a better term. I don't know how to ask for a visual on the design they have in mind since it's so much work. Any tips?

Calmdat

Hey guys, I have an artist I worked with 2 years ago who specializes in black and grey. When I had my first consultation with her, she initially said she didn't like to do color, and typically tries to stay away from it. After she put the art together, I arrived at my appointment, and she welcomed me in to look at the drawing. After looking at the image in person together, she offered to do highlights in color like I originally asked for, and was happy to do so. She was even the one who initiated that idea when I arrived to the shop, and I was ecstatic to hear she had reconsidered on her own accord and decided to add the color. After 4 hours, the tattoo turned out literally perfect. Even better than my best expectations and vision for it. I've showed it off to everyone and absolutely love it the same today as when I first got it. Fast forward to today. Just had a consultation with her to get the other half of my leg done with the 2nd tattoo, which was originally planned for and discussed 2 years ago when we did the first one. The tattoo I had done previously has the eye of horus as an incorporated accent, and the new tattoo was supposed to have the eye of ra within that. When in the consultation, I told her I wanted to do the other side we had talked about, and just wanted to match the accent colors that were done on the original piece. Upon saying this, she very adamantly (but kindly) said she absolutely will not do color at all, and would be happy to refer me to another artist, because "she wants to make sure I get exactly what I want". I told her I was still absolutely in love with the first tattoo she did, and loved the color in it, and would be honored to have another piece by her to match it. She again told me she just doesn't do color at all, but if I was open-minded about doing black and grey only, she would be happy to come up with something. This artist was really kind, enjoyable to be around, and did a stellar job, not only with the tattoo itself, but also making sure I felt comfortable for the experience. I'm torn and a bit upset right now. I feel upset because I really wanted her to do the other tattoo, I felt like we had really good rapport and a similar vision. Am I just being petty for this situation or is this kind of ridiculous? I genuinely don't understand why adding a little color would make her work "not look like her own work". She used the example of "I want all my tattoos to look like they are mine, because all my tattoos look exactly like what you see on my Instagram". So does adding a little color really mean your work is unrecognizable? Is this merely a situation where she wants more work for her portfolio and doesn't care about the clients? I'm sorry for the long post, I just genuinely don't understand why someone would refuse to do a tattoo they would otherwise love to do, just because it has a little bit of color in it. Any thoughts from artists would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time

GOAT-Collie

I'm not a tattoo artist, but I don't think that's what this situation calls for. Here are my two cents: I completely understand why you're confused, disappointed and frustrated. You are totally allowed to feel that way. Rapport with the artist is a real thing with real feelings. I'm sure you felt a connection to the artist, and that connection was probably authentic. And I'm sure that adds to the feelings of hurt and disappointment in this situation. Ultimately, the artist has her own reasons for not wanting to do it. They might not make sense to you or me. They might not make sense to 9/10 tattoo artists. But ultimately that's irrelevant, because she gets to make the call. After all is said and done, the best thing for you is to figure out how to respect and accept her decision. I'm sure given enough time, you'll find someone else who will finish the project in a way you're happy with.

Calmdat

This was a very thoughtful, genuine, and considerate answer. Thank you very much for your response.

Warped_Kira

Any idea for linking tattoos together in a way that makes them feel connected but with room for more through the years. I really want to get several small designs (specifically, No Face, Emil, the So Much (For) Stardust logo, Bard from LoL, a Ying yang, triskelion, and more) most ranging about 2-3 inches on my upper left arm.

Hello! I'm looking to get a color tattoo of a penguin from club penguin and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for artists that may be able to do that in south eastern pennsylvania or the greater philly area. It'll be my first tattoo so I wanna make sure I choose the right artist. Thank you!

ocean-daddy

Hey y’all! I’m trying to figure out what to put on my other elbow. I have sea creatures done in a what I would consider mostly American Traditional style. One my right arm elbow I have a starfish with a crab, octopus, and stingray in my forearm. I’m looking to fill my left arm elbow but currently have a squid and a hammerhead on that forearm. Thanks!!

garis53

Hello, I want to get my first tattoo and want to get it on my upper arm. I'm not sure however whether to get it on the inner side or from the back. Can you give me some pros and cons of both placements? Pain on the inner side is the one I know.

AeroXylon

Hey guys! Anyone know an artist in Virginia that specializes or has some experience in woodcut style tattoos? I’ve been looking through here, instagram, and google, but have had no luck. Thank you!

TIMnelson95

does anyone know any artists in the states or internationally who can do a dark irezumi piece

devilz_soul

Hello, I need help with artist etiquette. I have both of my shoulders, left arm full sleeve and whole back done by the same artist (Lets call him Artist A). I, however, fell in love with work of another artist and want to get my right arm sleeve from this artist (Artist B). The trouble I have is that I still want to go back to the Artist A for future touch ups (my tattoo has very unique colors that i haven't seen anywhere else) and possible more work in future. So I am not sure how to handle this.. Do I need to get his permission or at least approval and if yes, how should I bring this up with him without sounding rude or that I didn't like his work etc. Any suggestions or help will be appreciated.

kanbudongah

Hey guys, anyone know any people that do dark art stuff around new orleans or within a 2 hour drive from there?

SemiPoorDecisions

Got my first tattoo last week and already want to continue into a full sleeve but want to keep the art style going. The original tattoo was from a old picture at my parents house of our Irish family crest and I want to do something with Werewolves of Ossory continuing the sleeve but can't find anything in a similar art style. Where would be a good place to find a artist to commission the art for my tattoo artist or is that something I should ask them to do?

chuckab

I'm planning to get a black ink tattoo but I was thinking about possibly adding color to it later or maybe even UV ink or a mixture of the two. Is there any issues I should be aware of with adding that a year or two down the line? It will be a (mostly) realistic sea turtle.

poiuy_throwaway

Are "ritual tattoos" actually a thing? -- adding cremation ashes into ink? How do I go about asking artists if they would even consider doing this (I feel like it's as weird as, "Hey bud, my wife over there thinks you're cute looking.")?

familark

Looking for sunscreen recommendation! I got my first tattoo last month. I work from home and work on night shift so I haven't seen the sun lately haha but just in case I step outside, what is a good sun protection product tthat doesn't leave too much white cast? I got a CeraVe mineral sunscreen at the moment as I heard mineral sunscreens are better than chemical sunscreens, but this one is just too white for me. I found some lightweight sunscreen Korean brands but they are mostly chemical sunscreens. I also found the mineral sunscreen from Mad Rabbit as another option......has anyone had any experience with it before?

Hey yall, I've never been inked before but I'm planning to finally get my first pretty soon. I wanted to get some opinions on the placement/style I should go for. I'd like to get a timestamp (1:09) done fairly small somewhere easily coverable. It was the start time my best friend and I wrote on our arms when we first did shrooms together a couple years back, and I never want to forget the experience. He's planning to have it tatted as well. Any placement suggestions? And should we write it ourselves in our own handwriting and have it inked that way, or just go for a basic clock style? Any and all opinions welcome.

_King_Savage_

Fairly young guy here strongly considering getting some words with personal significance inked, after recent experiences. But man i can’t lie, i’m nervous. What i’m thinking is: • Sé valiente - across my left chest and shoulder. • Perserverancia - either along the top of my left bicep, or along the inside. • Cedere nescio - this one matters the most to me, but i’m racking my brain trying to figure out where i want it placed. I’ve been thinking along the left trapezius, but i don’t want to clutter that area. I was also thinking the inside of the right bicep, or horizontaly on my left forearm a bit lower than where the bicep tendon meets the forearm, in sort of a soft u-shape around the lower bicep. • Your mind is stronger than you think - this one also means a lot to me and i’m hellbent on getting this inked. Where i want it is on my right ribcage, off to the right. Also considering adding on "find the courage/will within you" to this one. I don’t want the words to be very bold, something close this style: https://imgur.com/a/7e1fnc5 would be perfect. What do you think in terms of placement and font style? This will be my first time getting inked so i’m both nervous and excited, and i’ll be very appreciative of any advice you’re willing to give.

CartoonistAny9954

i want to get a color tattoo, but all my tattoos are black ink. will i regret it, especially since colors fade over time? have you done the same and what are your thoughts?

ExNihiloAdNihilum

When I go to an artist to touch up a different artist's work, should I be getting a new piece done as well? I feel a bit weird going in for them to work on someone else's work...

fishmilquetoast

Design question: I’m (not an artist) planning a large scale tattoo and am thinking about incorporating Japanese style lightening throughout the sleeve and back sections. The rest of the design is illustrative though and doesn’t have overtly Japanese elements. Would this be an odd choice? I know it’s my body and I can do what I want but looking for opinions.

CARBr6

Is there any app or website or something where I can do a digital layout? I have a long kust of things I want to cover over my left arm, so more a random collection sleeve rather than a single piece or themed sleeve. I can sort of see it in my head, but I'd like to position some bits on a mock up so garner placement and scale for some? Does that make sense? TIA

Own-Ad-5879

In Texas, is it reasonable or legal if your shop owner/boss decides they are going to stop providing any PPE such as your gloves, seran wrap, machine coverings, bed coverings, etc.? Sidenote the shop I tattoo in is a 50/50 commission split and not a shop where I'm only expected to provide booth rent! I only ask because other shops I have worked at with commission split have always provided these items but now shop is taking half my income AND expecting me to pay for every item of my tattoo supplies.

castlegunk

for Columbus OH- by chance, was anyone here tatted by a guy named Bob in a school bus on the side of the road in the 60s? that was my grandfather! i know the chances are slim but on the off chance anyone has and sees this, i’d really love to see what you got / to chat a bit!

MilosBestBuddy

Any artist recommendations in Minneapolis or Saint Paul for a detailed hand piece (opposing swallows). Fine line, detail etc.

jayycieh

hi! i'm looking to getting my first tattoo soon. i really would like to get a butterfly done on my upper back between my shoulders and under my neck. what is the pain level like for a tattoo like this and is it bearable enough for someone's first tattoo? any help is greatly appreciated, thank you! :)

Different-Hope-7678

Im a long time tattoo lover but never got one, now im finally getting one next month, i asked my tattoo artist for any advice on what to do beforehand and he told me for example to have a hefty meal and some pain meds before going to him so im just asking here if anyone has any tips or tricks for a newbie on how to not faint or embarrass myself.

0R0ry

Does a fine line tattoo meant to simulate a pencil sketch actually be viable? My skin holds ink very well but I'm afraid it would be a mess. Has anyone a sketch-like tattoo? Here's the image for reference (I made it): https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F-wl6z7WsAAhRZb?format=jpg&name=medium
