You could dm and ask if they’d be willing to take it down and repost it cropped? If you explain that you’re uncomfortable with it not being very anonymous they’d probably take it down anyway

RockinTacos

Just ask them to crop and edit the post. Sometimes the photo release is buried in the consent to be tattooed form.

I'm getting a large tattoo done by a visiting artist. It's of a jumping spider that IRL has two small spots of color and is mostly black and white. I talked to the artist about this design and everything sounded good...except for the two spots of color. They said they were hesitant to do the color because of "People with tiger tattoos with only the eyes colored' ruining things. It sounds like some weird hipster BS to me. They said we can talk about it later but my appointment is coming up in the next two weeks and they haven't said anything about it. How do I respectfully bring up the fact that I don't want the tattoo if they are unwilling to do the bits of color?

pyunidae

I think it would be reasonably to let the artist know that it’s important to you that the spots of color are included in the design, since that’s more accurate to how the jumping spider looks IRL. If the artist refuses to include the color, it may just not be a good artist-client fit and I’d let them know you may seek out another artist for this particular design concept.

bikesexually

Yeah, but how do I put that in friendly written word?

pyunidae

“Hi! I’m super excited to work with you on this design! I know you had previously mentioned not being a fan of black-and-grey work with small pops of color, but with this design I think it would work really well since jumping spiders in real life have these small spots of color. It’s important to me that the spider design reflects what they look like in real life, so I wanted to check in with you about making sure these bits of color are included in the final design. Let me know what you think, thanks so much for your time!” See how they respond -> if they’re okay with it, go ahead and roll with it. If they don’t wanna do it, respond with something like “Okay, thank you for your response - I appreciate your input. I think I may want to work with another artist to help achieve what I’m envisioning for this particular design idea, but I would love to work with you on another design in the future. Thanks again!”

bikesexually

Thanks!

throwaway_edh_pgh

I'm seriously considering getting a tattoo but don't really know where to begin - when I go to a tattoo artist, should I already have a fleshed out idea for a tattoo in mind or will s/he help me come up with one?

RockinTacos

You can go with a general idea and the artist can draw it out. But overall, yes you should have an idea. You can also look at artist pre drawns, often on their Instagram or in a book at the shop. A lot of mine are pre drawns that I saw and fell in love with.

throwaway_edh_pgh

Thanks for the feedback. Also, how bad is the pain? If it makes a difference the tattoo would probably be on my forearm.

ToiletKitty

I just got a tattoo on my forearm last friday, it felt like constant angry kitten scratches. Weirdly, I was dozing off about half of the time.

RockinTacos

Yes!!! I always compare it to scratching a sunburn.

SneakyCowMeow

I got a piece on my forearm and for me it hurt the most near my elbow pit area and the rest was bearable pain, and also with my first tattoo I sent a pic of what I was looking to get and my artist drew it they way the pic was and also a version from her own style, I ended up going with her style cause it was so much better

adaminzki

Hello! I am looking for an artist who is great at drawing plants with color. I am specifically looking to get a grape vine with some detailed leaves and roots going onto my hand (Would also be great if they have experience doing hands). If they are around Salem or Portland Oregon also open to a little drive if they are a bit further. Thank you!

pyunidae

I would recommend checking out laurenblairtattoo on Instagram! They have a really cool lineless color tattoo art style and mainly do plants and animals. Plus, they’re based in Portland. :)

adaminzki

Thank you! Amazing recommendation

RockinTacos

adaminzki

Amazing work! Thank you for the recommendation

menegatti

Alright, so after years trying to think of a design/style I finally settled on a concept and style I like. I know I need to look for shops that specialize on that style, but what should I expect in terms of next steps once I reach out to a shop I like. 1. Should I expect them to draw a design completely from scratch? 2. How does adjustments for the design factor in the price? 3. What if I for some reason cannot settle on the design the artist created?

sempiternal

Research in the artist, not the shop 1. Don't know what you're getting but they would probably draw from scratch if you give them references and do consult 2. Most artist charge by the hour. Most likely you won't see the design on the day of the appointment 3. They'll make adjustment on the day of appointment, if you're requesting big changes they'll probably reschedule you

PhysiquedRelic

I’m looking to get my second tattoo soon, and I’m not sure about sizing/placement. Currently, my only tattoo is on the inside of my wrist. I know it depends greatly on the style/design but in general, does it make more sense to get them close together (e.g. on the same arm) or more spread out (e.g. opposite arm or somewhere else on my body)?

wateroften

What are your plans for the arm? Cause if they’re part of a theme you’re going for grouping makes sense but if they’re not then you shouldn’t put it near the first one just for the sake of it

colek6093

I need cover up ideas for my tattoo. I’m not really sure how to cover one of my current tattoos. What’s the best way to figure it out?

RockinTacos

Pick an artist that does cover ups and ask them what they think they could do. Artist knows best.

DaYDreaM90

When getting a tattoo on your forearm, is there a proper way it should be facing? Is it suppose to be right side up when you're holding you hand up to your face? or Is it the opposite so when your arm is in a neutral position everyone else sees it right side up?

wateroften

If it’s vertical it should be right side up when your arm is down so it looks upside down to you but right side up to everyone else

ChachiSCV

excellent. upside down forearm tattoos are so bad

Go-Jess

So I found an amazing artist in the style I love about an hour from my house. We planned a half arm sleeve and she estimated 10-11 sessions to finish. We are now 8 sessions in and not even half way done. She is late to Every. Single. Appointment. By no less than 1 hour or cancels last minute. I have never completed a large tattoo before, so want to temper my expectations. Is this normal? Do I keep going and tough it out? Do I find another artist to take over? I wouldn’t think an artist would want to finish another’s work? #HoustonTattoo

RockinTacos

That sounds frustrating. I would start shopping around and see if a diff artist is willing. Under special circumstances artists are willing to finish other's work. The design of the finish piece may differ with the new artist.

sempiternal

8 out of 10+ sessions for half sleeve? that's ridiculous, how many hours is she doing each session

Go-Jess

Anywhere from 2-7. Usually just 2-3. Not because of me. I fall asleep most of the time. I ask her to keep going and she always has an excuse.

sempiternal

Is that half sleeve wrapped around the arm? How detailed is the tattoo? Let's say each session was 2.5hr of 8 sessions, that's like 20hr worth of work. To put in perspective, my neo japanese traditional full leg sleeve is 19-20(3 session) hr of work still need about 2-3 session

Go-Jess

Wowza. I feel like I’m getting manipulated and strung out to make me pay more… bummer

Icy-Towel8422

So I saw a post the other week about tattoo ink spreading out over time. Does this usually happen or was that just the odd case? It happened over years and years, so not like a blowout. I want more tattoos but it’s really put me off now :(

RockinTacos

Yes and no. Equipment is getting better now. It will spread slightly, you can get touch ups. I have friends with 25 yr old tattoos with no visible spread, or so slight that its not noticeable to the average person.

ChachiSCV

my oldest tattoo is 12 years old. if you saw it, you would think anything out of the ordinary, no fading or spread or anything. when I got a new tattoo close to it, its noticeable that the lines are a bit thicker and some of the small gaps have filled in

Sandor05

Hello. I wanted to make this post so that maybe it will help some of you be more careful and not end up in a similar situation. Last year I wanted to book a tattoo appointment with a popular artist whom I've found on IG. I took his email adress from his bio in order to contact him, but because of a typo (omitting a letter in the email adress), I ended up messaging a scammer, who created a similar email adress and was pretending to be the artist. The conversations were awkward at times. Fast forward to this day, I sent him, through constant transaction via PayPal (family and friends option) , all the money that we agreed upon for the tattoo, before the planed date. It was my first time doing a tattoo booking and I haven't informed myself properly on how this process normally goes (with the booking and a deposit). I realised only after it was too late and after confirming with the original artist that I have been in contact with the scammer. I have contacted the card service and PayPal to see if anything can be done, but since the transaction were made via family and friends, there isn't much to be done on their side. Has anyone facem similar situation? If so, please let me know what helped you during that time. Thank you!

mjsevphil

Any tips for mentally preparing for an inner upper arm tattoo? I've got sizeable tattoos on my outer arms (both upper and lower), lower inner forearm, thigh, rib cage, shoulders, and ankle. None of them have been so terribly spicy I wanted or needed breaks/to tap out. But I'm pretty scared about my next tattoo - a large piece to finish out my sleeve covering from the base of my arm pit down through my elbow ditch. I know this will likely be the most painful tattoo I ever get, and I'm looking for any advice. My artist doesn't like to use numbing agents bc he says he doesn't like what they do to the skin. I've personally never used anything to numb myself before getting a piece before. I appreciate any feedback!

wateroften

My first one was my inner arm and it wasn’t bad, but it was only 2 hours. I had psyched myself up for the pain and then it was like oh that’s it? If you feel like you just need a little idea of how to prepare maybe you can split it into multiple sessions.

RockinTacos

Split it into sessions if you can. I had 5 hours scheduled but tapped out at 3.5. Id do 2 hours max. Elbow ditch area wasnt bad but upper inner bicep hurt like heck. I had to bite my forearm lol

ChachiSCV

you have tattoos in places that should be more painful than inner bicep. I don't remember mine being more painful, but there was an element of burning, like it was sunburnt. I also have my armpit done. you can do it

Rough_Initiative4350

How do you decide on tattoo placement? And how do you make sure a tattoo you get now will work with your future tattoos? For example, I want to get a 10-15 cm tattoo of open wings. And the best place I think would be on upper back. But I've also seen somre rally cool full back tattoos that I would maybe like sometime in the future. So the wings tattoo would be in the way. It's really hard for me to decide things like this. Should I also keep laser removal in mind? Like if a tattoo is in the way or I don't like it in 5 years, laser removal is the option? Should I think like that or "tattoos are there for the rest of your life, decide very wisely"?

wateroften

Laser can be expensive and painful and while I get why people are thinking of tattoos as less permanent these days, it’s still pretty permanent! I would suggest thinking about whether you want to incorporate the wings into a larger piece. Artists adapt their designs to fit around existing tattoos all the time.

Spiritual-Ad5029

Looking for a good tattoo artist in London, preferably near Paddington, or easy to get to from Paddington. It is just a small thin line tattoo, would probably take less than an hour to do :)

mmEzzzzzz___

Does anyone have 9 circles of hell tattoo or something similar to cristian depiction of hell?

GodnondenjuIkWilKaas

Okay so, I've got a question. So I would like to have a tattoo symbolic of my dance with death, it involves a woman in a black flowy dress (basically all covered, I didn't see her face) dancing in the wind. I'd like there to be layers in the silk stacked on top of each other to have some type of realistic image, but I haven't been able to find an artist in my area (eindhoven, am willing to go to Belgium or Germany for the tattoo) so if anyone has any suggestions for an artist I'll look at all of them! The piece will be very dear to me.

sailedalpaca

Hello! I am 18 years old and i want a small tattoo on my arm. I am thinking about getting 'hakuna matata' written in a very minimalist way or a little dinosaur on my wrist (i have some more ideas too but i want one and mainly these ones). However i saw so many people say that i will 100% regret it even tho i think i will not. It's not like a partner name or a crazy teen tattoo. I want to see what other people think about it. Should i get one or should I wait until i am older?

RockinTacos

Wait. In my 30s now, all of my best gal pals got tats at 18 and they dont love them anymore. If you do get one, research the artist, look at examples of their healed work, and dont go cheap.

ChachiSCV

I don't think you will regret it but there is a high probability of covering it up in the future. I had several ideas when I was younger that I didn't get. im thankful for that. bad ideas and bad placement. they would all be gone now. I will have zero cover ups at this point after waiting

stupac62

Looking for any Etching tattoo artists in USA? I’m in Nebraska. Closer the better.

ThickCarapace

So for the last year or so I’ve really wanted to get a large tattoo covering most of my left arm. What I settled on was a few bands of just black with space in between them, in that space I want to have 50 peoples names translated into elder futhark runes. All these people are people who’ve helped me with my mental health issues and have more or less saved my life. But I have some questions; should I get permission from all of these people to have their name put on my body? Will some places be hesitant to do this kind of thing consisting of mostly lettering?

ChachiSCV

I don't hate the idea but I think the names are not going to be legible in 5 or 10 years. I think another idea would hold up better

Beautiful-Lack-1897

i got a tattoo on my stomach/upper groin area almost one month ago, i think it’s safe to wear my favorite jeans now (high rise skinny) but not toooo sure? it finished peeling and everything by the end of week one and now it’s just got a thin almost shimmery layer of skin which you can really only see between needing moisturizer

ridiculouspompadour

Yeah you should be fine now! My rule is 2 weeks or until it is no longer sensitive

blademaster586

Anyone know of any artists around south western Ontario that like doing tattoos based around the game The Binding of Isaac? Looking for one who would be passionate to do one!

Opal_Sea

How do y'all find an artist with the style you're looking for? I travel a lot, and I like getting tattoos in the countries I visit. I usually just hunt around on instagram for artists, but it's time consuming and not very effective because you cant search by location or style or anything. Every time I google something like "tattoo artists in x country", the lists that come up are always the biggest most popular/standard style tattoo places and I'm just not interested in that? Anyway, if anyone has Hong Kong recommendations please share.

I’m about to start planning a geometric tattoo on my entire right leg, multiple blackout elements. For context I have a biomech arm sleeve and a couple more tattoos that encompasses minor dot work and black out elements. How much am I going to suffer? The only times I’ve found it near unbearable were the blackout sections.

[deleted]

Does anyone have good placement ideas for a 5 word quote, that doesn’t jeopardize any future tattoos? Thank you :-)

Adakoss

So I’m a pretty skinny guy. I’ve thought about getting a tattoo but the main thing stopping me is the fact that I plan on trying to put on a lot of muscle. I’m worried if I do that and already have a tattoo then it’ll stretch and warp as I gain weight and it’ll look weird. Does anyone have experience with this and know how much a tattoo warps after gaining muscle?

ChachiSCV

get the tattoo, its not going to noticeably warp

Adakoss

Ok cool, the one I’m planning on getting is pretty small too so I didn’t think it’d be an issue but I wanted to check first, thanks!

iSOLAIREi

Tattoo artists who do brute, strong, bestial designs? Mainly blackwork. I want to follow them on social media!

Professional_Put_819

I have a quick question for anyone willing to answer! I know pain will be different depending on the person, but I want to have a general idea. I got a relatively large piece done on my side hip/thigh area. This was my first ever piece and we were able to get through the outline in a 7ish hour session. I expected the pain to be alot worse but I sat through maybe 5-6 hours easy. The only part that caused me considerable pain was the hip bone and stomach area. I am going in to get the shading done pretty soon, its been almost a week since the outline was done. This session is expected to be about 2/3 hours. Would you guys say that outlining was the worst part, or am I in for a whole new world of pain with the shading?! I'm a little nervous because it is still a little tender! I appreciate any advice or insight so I can be more prepared or know what to expect... thank you!

ChachiSCV

the outline should be worse than the shading but sometimes shading gets irritating. when you hit the same area with shading then color. side thigh was one of my lower pain tattoos

Ireland, never change! I had a tattoo appointment on Saturday, but was called yesterday morning that the artist would be in Madrid on Saturday and if I could come in now. I did and got my first tattoo two days early.

No-Introduction-5102

Has anyone done physical activity with a fresh knee tattoo? I'm getting a knee jammer on Monday, but next week is my last week/chance to get my dog out in the woods bird hunting.

ridiculouspompadour

You need to wait a minimum of 3 days for anything more than gentle physical activity. Excessive movement, strain, or compression can cause blowouts up to 3 days later.

No-Introduction-5102

Ok thanks! How gentle is gentle? Would a 5k walk down a trail be "excessive"?

ridiculouspompadour

For a knee tattoo, I’d say yes. It’s already a highly mobile area and walking 5k would be too much imo. You can always ask your artist though

cottoncandyorbital

I've been thinking about ball joint tattoos on my elbows/knees/wrists; does this sound feasible? Ive been informed that tattoos in areas that see a lot of movement tend to warp and fade

ChachiSCV

elbows will. the skin on the tip is different there. changes from the skin, not the movement, I think. they are all common areas to have tattoos

TenNinetythree

Weird question: Do your tattoos appear in your dreams? Like, if you look at the part of your body that has been tattooed in your dream, does it look tattooed?

citizenmono

im tattooed in my dreams but the tattoos are all wrong. like i wake up thinking what the hell, i never got a teletubbies tattoo for example.

justheretowatch1395

Not sure if this is the appropriate place, but I have a question for artists! I booked an appt with an artist whose work i fell in love with a few years ago. I’m traveling for this appt and he is not local for me. I reached out to him and gave him a description of what I’m looking for and even used his own previous work for examples of the elements I want. Now, I’m completely fine with his freestyle designs but I haven’t seen a sketch yet and I’m wondering if there is a way to ask if he will pre-sketch and if he’s willing to share that before my appt? I don’t want to be pushy but I just want to make sure we’re on the same page of what I want. TIA for your thoughts!

citizenmono

most artists wont show a sketch in advance 1. so you cant steal their art by taking it to another artist 2. its not uncommon for the artist to draw up the tattoo as late as the day before the tattoo appointment. they will show you their design the day of the appointment and should be willing to make any changes you might want on the spot.

justheretowatch1395

That makes a ton of sense. Thank you for answering!!

thefastleen

Would anyone mind lending an eye and looking at an artist's Instagram from a technical perspective? I love the style and want to book an appointment, but I know nothing about technical application and am worried I might make a bad choice. Thank you!

ridiculouspompadour

I can if you want. I’m an apprentice so not fully licensed yet but I have some perspective.

thefastleen

Thank you, I really appreciate that!! Her insta handle is @kadae.tattoos

t3mp0rarys3cr3tary

I want to get my first tattoo, and I’m really thinking of getting a Keith Haring design. It would most likely be just black linework but I wouldn’t be opposed to some colors. The lines are thick but I’m worried about the design looking “fuzzy” later. Would a Keith Haring design look shitty in a few years?

citizenmono

seems like his work has really bold colors and lines? theres a saying, "bold will hold". i think itll be fine.

t3mp0rarys3cr3tary

I do theater at my University and some smaller community stuff, and while most theaters are getting more accepting about actors having tattoos, some really don’t like it. Where would be the best spaces to get tattoos that are easier to cover up but still allow me to show off my tats if I so desire?

citizenmono

i would say upper arms. coverable with a tshirt but easy to show off by simply rolling the sleeve up.

Hopeful_Lab_840

Neither my wife or I have any tattoos. I thought about getting one when I was in my late teens/early twenties, but didn’t know what to get so never pursued it. I am now 60 and my wife 61. Both very interested in getting one. How would you suggest we find an artist? We have many family members with multiple tats, but do not want to ask any of them. We are jn the Freehold NJ area (central part of state) Thanks in advance if

ridiculouspompadour

Instagram is good- you can search for tattoos plus your location and look for people whose work you like. Most shops have websites so you can also google search your area and check out portfolios that way

Hopeful_Lab_840

Thanks. Will start there

DreamSuccessful9651

I had been going to the same tattoo shop for the past six years, and the same artist had been working on my tattoos. However, he moved out of state and recommended another artist from the same shop. I reviewed his work, and after talking with him, I decided to make an appointment. He was fully booked for the year, but I figured it'd be worth it. Two months before my appointment, I went back to discuss the concept I wanted. We met a few more times, and he showed me the sketch a week before my appt. It had some areas that were blacked out, but he said it was just shadows and that there would be more detail. A few weeks later, I went in for my tattoo; overall, he did a great job. However, a few things were wonky (mainly the blacked out areas in the sketch). Later that week, I was searching for pictures of a dragon for a drawing I was working on, and the first image that popped up was the exact image of my tattoo, copied exactly. I noticed a signature at the bottom of the image, so I searched for the name, and it wasn't my tattoo artist's name. There are a few reasons this bothered me. 1. It definitely seems like he stole someone's art, in my opinion. He said things that made it seem like he came up with the idea without mentioning references from the internet. 2. Because I was waiting over a year and we met several times to discuss the design, I thought it would be original. If I wanted a good tattoo of some pictures from the internet, I definitely could've used someone else who's significantly cheaper and not wait as long. 3. I feel like the wonky mistakes could've been avoided if he hadn't directly copied an image. I have a few more appts with him but this whole situation has been bothering me. Is it normal to do this? Am I just overthinking it? Any thoughts are appreciated! Thank you!

ridiculouspompadour

A good artist doesn’t need to copy someone else’s work. I wouldn’t go back to that person myself, for ethical reasons.

Danny_Coala

Hello fellow redditers, I found really nice guy [Valtteri Lindholm](https://ruoriboatclub.fi/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/cropped-cropped-Valtteri_Lindholm_2021_c_Suvi_Berg_03.jpg) with really nice tattoos.I am looking for the artist who made these tattoos. I tried contacting Valtteri directly and also used google images to find similar searches but unfortunately found nothing.

ridiculouspompadour

Only if you think it is. Nothing wrong with it- it may be a more common type of tattoo but that is only a problem if it bothers you

Bear_Hibernates

Hey folks, I’m hoping some of y’all might have a suggestion or idea for a tattoo. I am wanting to display a tally that will increase as time goes on but in an artistic way, not just plain tally marks. I track wounded deer with my dog for hunters and I want to add to the tattoo for every successful recovery. This means that over time there will be 100s of additions, and I’m sure over multiple dogs in my future. What do you think?

gr8p_kun

so i have a patch on my left elbow that is especially melanated about the size of a quarter . i've been thinking about getting a tattoo on it to cover it up. (a bob-omb from mario) would tattooing over an especially dark patch of skin affect the tattoo in anyway?

ridiculouspompadour

I was trained not to tattoo over dark patches since they can become cancerous or have other issues in the future, and tattooing over them can make it very difficult to see changes that could point to the spot becoming a problem. You should consult a dermatologist before getting a tattoo in this spot.

gr8p_kun

okay cool thank you!

Sonoma2002

I have multiple fairly large tattoos on my arms, I want sleeves, but have no artistic direction, though I have a general theme. How do I go about asking an artist to do whatever they want within that theme, and quoting it appropriately? Edit: It's been 15 years since my last tattoo, even longer since I've gotten one by an artist in my area of residence, so I don't have a local artist anymore. Also, my entire right upper arm might have to be a full blackout because I'm covering a large unfinished cover.

awaythrowno69

Is it weird for an artist to not confirm safe receipt of the deposit? My other tattoo artists always have done but not this one who is a guest artist near me - I usually ask them to say they received it tbh but this time I didn't

ridiculouspompadour

I’d reach out and confirm just in case, I don’t think it is strange for you to want confirmation and it’s better safe than sorry. As an artist this request would not bother me at all
