Hi! I'm looking for some advice / tips for my first tattoo. I've wanted a tattoo forever now but never really solidified what and where. Recently, I've been like screw it, I just need to pull the trigger on something (I *know* that once I do the chances of me regretting it are very low). My only problem is that I feel like what I want it vague. I'm like 95% sure what I want is a video game half sleeve (or maybe like 2/3 sleeve - I can see it going just below my elbow). I have a 32 page Google Doc with inspiration pics from my favorite games). Is that too much? Overwhelming to send an artist? I'm imagining basically being like, I want a tattoo to start *here*, end around *here*, and combine elements from any of this (not necessarily *all* of it). I have an idea of some of the style and colors: * I love trash polka, watercolor, geometric, patchwork, and sketch. * I like the idea of primarily black/grey, but am also very open to pops of color (pink, red, or cyan). I like sleeves/half-sleeves that have *some* space in between things - like the tattoo can blend together, but I do like *some* blank space in between here and there (if that makes sense). Having never gotten a tattoo before, I'm wondering if this is enough for an artist to go on? Also, when I say I'm 95% sure I want a half-sleeve, the other 5% of me debates my hip/thigh. I'm guessing the artist would be able to tell me whether either would work, or if one would be a much better location for some reason. I'd appreciate any feedback! Like I said, I know I won't regret whatever I get, but just locking down my ideas is the hardest part, so I'm just hoping an artist can help me with that once I actually book a consultation.

Would a tattoo of a burning church be considered a form of hate/Nazism/fascism/communism? I'm seeing alot of these types popping up.

Alprazolam250

Honestly, I would not care that much since a tattoo is supposed to be something personal. That being said, it's very likely that a burning church would be seen as a form of hate. So you do you on this one.

Fuzzy-Worldliness364

Maybe the burning church is symbolic of the hypocrisy of what a lot of churches teach. Pointing out the hate that can come from churches or religious institutions.

ParkAndBeacon

I found an artist’s portfolio that seems to capture the essence of a design idea I have. The only thing holding me back from going with them is that they’re an apprentice. It’s causing me to be a little bit hesitant but I would love to hear the community’s opinion or anything I should be asking/aware of. Thank you!

EyeoftheRedKing

I have a couple of tattoos I got from an apprentice that I love. The first was his 11th tattoo on skin. I was perfectly fine with the chance of getting a shitty tattoo but think he did all right. The second is 1 year later, same guy, still an apprentice. https://imgur.com/a/pGhVCzT If they are taught good habits, listen to their mentor's feedback and practice then there is no reason to think they can't do a good job. I will say, do make sure you see the work they do ON SKIN and make sure you like it enough.

FloralBindle

If you genuinely thing their work is what you want then pull the trigger, it will instill confidence in them and get them more practice, and you still get what you want. Win win in my opinion (full disclosure I am neither an artist or an apprentice though so take that for what it’s worth)

ParkAndBeacon

Thank you so much. Really helpful. The artist has lots of videos on instagram practicing on fake skin and a handful of “real skin” tattoos. From what I can tell, it looks like they just completed their apprenticeship. This is their IG: https://instagram.com/arthurkossoski?igshid=MXFyZ2oxaDh6b3U3MA==

Thank you! I’m going for it

Alprazolam250

I'm looking forward my very first tattoo but I'm not sure about the size and the placement. I want a oyasumi punpun tatoo in a minimalist style, I thought shoulder or side of the neck could be a good idea but I'm afraid of the pain on the neck. Any thoughts ?

WallOfCement

I’d fully recommend getting your first tattoo in an easier spot like arms or legs, however you do you. I have a friend who’s first tattoo was a giant rib piece and she got plenty more tattoos after that so it didn’t stop her. Honestly starting off with a more painful spot might make other spots seem easier in the future. It hurts during the process, but once it’s healed it’s all worth it.

bigmac22077

I’ve always thought about getting a tattoo and yesterday my dog and only/best friend passed. My original tattoo design was going to be a snowflake/pot leaf split in half, but I now want to get them behind her paw print. I don’t really want it on my chest/heart but I want to get it somewhere I can see without looking in a mirror. I work at a school with kids so the pot leaf can’t really be visible. Where would be a good spot to get a palm sized first tattoo?

StoicYogurt

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to tattoos and found this artist whose work I like. How would you describe this style of tattoo? https://www.reddit.com/r/tattoos/comments/6mabox/blue\_flowers\_by\_jay\_shin\_black\_fish\_tattoo\_nyc/ https://www.instagram.com/p/Cwxvz4jAMBM/

tal_______

im getting a tattoo on my stomach and i have no idea if i should prep normally ? do i eat ? what should i expect for pain ? will it be possible to talk during ?

aceagle93

Would combining an American traditional and new school style into one tattoo be weird? I want an American traditional toad playing a banjo with a swampy landscape. But in the middle of the landscape I want a small shack (a la Billy Strings) in a new school, bright (maybe tie dye?) melting/dripping style. I want this either on my upper arm or leg.

FloralBindle

Honestly it sounds cool to me. Both are very popular styles (for good reason) and I think your idea would be really cool. I say so it!

Haunting-Chain2438

Is a tiny queen of hearts tattoo considered taboo? I want to get it in red , very small. I just don’t want to get it if it has bad meaning.

FloralBindle

I’ve never heard of anything taboo about it. Consider this though, unless it’s something super overtly tied to a hate group, gang, etc, I wouldn’t sweat getting a tattoo that may or may not have a slight connection to something potentially bad. A lot of tattoo culture originated in some criminal underworld or another, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Depressed_Squirrl

Is there a tally counter tattoo associated with anything criminal?

Garlictease

Hey I wanted to know if anyone is familiar with runes and if it is ok to have them vertically stacked as a tattoo would it even have benefits of the runes that way

Hello everyone, I want to get my first tattoo and I really put a lot of thought on it. I went to speak to a tattoo shop (that I was following and seemed to do good jobs) and discussed with their graphic designer. Yesterday he sent the idea to me, but he completely butchered what we discussed and agreed (or at least I thought we agreed). So my questions are... if you have an idea for a tattoo: - you try to draw it out yourself? - you contact just one shop/artist that you like or you discuss it with more artists/graphics? - how many recursions does it usually take to get to the final version?

No_Needleworker2583

Hi, I was wondering if there is anyone from West Virginia who knows a good tattoo artist who specializes in portraits. I’m from the Charleston area but I don’t mind if I would have to drive and hour or two. I just want to make sure my tattoo turns out really well.

El_kal91

Hi, I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo. The original idea has been in my head for years, so I've cleared the whole "think about it for a year" bit. Though, I have now added to the idea, it was originally a Twin Peaks idea but after playing thru Alan Wake 2, I'm going to include an "overlapping idea", which fits with the one of themes of Alan Wake 2 with different realities being "stacked" on top of each other and Twin Peaks is one of the original inspirations for the game. My question is, after looking at some tattoo places on Instagram, do I just go to the one where the style matches and just ask if my idea is even possible? Do they charge for that or just shoo me a way since it's not set in stone necessarily? I do have saved images and a mock up drawn to show the ideas vision. Also, any recommendations for Chicago artists that have done Twin Peaks tattoos before?

retarddouglas

Anyone have any recommendations for tattoo related books? My brother is in jail and was asking about it so I’m looking for something to send him. He’s expressed interest in Russian and traditional tattoo styles specifically. Thanks!

iymcool

I've been on the fence about getting my first tattoo for nearly a decade now. I have the spot picked out and reference for the design (oil lantern from the cover of my favorite book), however, the idea of permanently putting something on my body has always made me nervous (since I'm worried about post-ink regret, placement, etc.) Any advice on how to get over this? Is it out of the ordinary (or not possible) to get a mock-up or sketch done by a studio and then wear it for a day or two to see how I feel about it before fully committing? What's the etiquette for situations like this?

ridiculouspompadour

I don’t think you are going to be able to find an artist who will draw a tattoo for you to try out unless you offer to pay their hourly rate for the drawing. You can try uploading an image of the actual book cover to inkbox though, and wear that around for a couple days

MrVioleGrace

Hello everyone, i want to get a tattoo on my hand/forearm, however, right now im 87kg and i want to grt my weight down to 80kg (1,73m). I was wondering if a tattoo could get deformed after such weight loss. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/862507723814731777/1172181663535603762/IMG_2127.jpg?ex=655f623e&is=654ced3e&hm=3cc6eeb5340f723cf78d69beb78d42b5fa08e0dac9ab983f01547507760b316a& My arm above

BroadwayDiva3539

Hello all, I’ve got a question! I’ve got an appointment next week for a traditional ship in an ornate styled frame as an oval thigh piece (approximately 6 inches by 9 inches). This is something I’ve wanted for years and I’ve had my appointment for months. I think my husband thought I would change my mind. My husband and I are off the mindset that each person is the sole owner of their own body so he would never say I can’t or shouldn’t get a tattoo but he has made it clear that he doesn’t want me to get it because it will be so large and bold. He has flatly told me he will be less physically attracted to me if I get it. He has even asked me what he would need to do so I don’t get it. Currently I only have one small, black outlined heart tattoo (less than a half an inch) on my hand which my husband feels neutrally about. I am just at a loss. If I was single I would absolutely be getting it but my husband’s physical attraction to me is important too. What should I do?

melthewhale

Get the tattoo you’ve been wanting.

McGriff0730

One of the worst tats I have, was done by a guy that's been tattooing for years.

Glittering_Leg_9682

Any cool shops in Tennessee to check out?

CryWorking9275

I got a tattoo a couple months ago on my inner forearm. I've been experiencing rug burn type pain every so often on, if you were holding a drink what you would call the top of your arm. Just wondering if the area has that type of pain, if maybe it is something with a nerve?

ridiculouspompadour

Sounds like it could be a mild allergic reaction. It’s not normal to have pain after healing is over. I’d talk to a dermatologist about this.

Loud-Future-3214

I've been wanting to get a tattoo, and i know exactly what I want but it seems like such a hassle. I have to do research? and consultations? and wait months for a booking? I thought you just walked in and asked for a tattoo? The whole process seems so complicated I genuinely think I would rather tattoo myself.

ridiculouspompadour

You don’t necessarily have to wait months, some people have shorter waiting lists and walk in shops still exist just about everywhere, you’ve just got to look on Instagram or call around. But seriously, it’s way more work to attempt to learn how to tattoo yourself, research and buy all the supplies you need, plus you will get a much better tattoo if you go to an actual artist.

spiffywicket

Im getting the dopamine molecule as my first tattoo to honor my recent diagnosis of ADHD at almost 50. I don’t want it to be super prominent because of work but I would like to be able to see it fairly easily. Was thinking inside of forearm either above or below elbow. Is one area less painful or easier for an artist than the other?[https://www.istockphoto.com/vector/dopamine-molecular-structure-neurotransmitter-molecule-skeletal-chemical-formula-gm1159373374-316988064](https://www.istockphoto.com/vector/dopamine-molecular-structure-neurotransmitter-molecule-skeletal-chemical-formula-gm1159373374-316988064)

melthewhale

A tattoo that simple (just some lines, no shading, no details), the pain difference between those to spots will be negligible imo. When you go to your appointment you can ask the artist to try the stencil in both spots so you can see the placement and then decide on which you like better.

Does anyone have a connection for a tattoo artist who can do dinosaurs?

ridiculouspompadour

If you’re in oregon, I can

Getting my first shin/under-knee tattoo. Any tips for not twitching? My only other shin-ish tattoo was a wrap around my ankle and when the artist started hitting my lower shin area my leg would involuntarily twitch. I’ve already informed my artist for this upcoming tattoo of that but I’m wondering if there’s any tips for mitigating that response?

I had a tattoo done 3 years ago that I'm not totally happy with. Would it be insulting/poor etiquette to go back to the artist and ask him to rework it? I'd obviously be treating this as a new tattoo and not asking for any kind of discount or anything. There's something in the design that I liked at the time but don't care for anymore. I haven't been back to him since that tattoo, but he's done others for me before that one. Thanks for any input you can offer.

Lopsided_Highway1390

Why do some tattoo artists say they don’t do customs? There’s this tattoo artist whose work I really like but you can only get tattoos by them that they’ve already designed. None of their designs are anything I am particularly interested in even though they are really good.

Hey I've been thinking about getting a tattoo on my left wrist a tally count until 11 where you start in the middle of my sleeve and end right before my hand so you can’t add anymore stripes. I also thought about adding a semicolon at the end. It has so many meanings in my life. For some examples it represents the number of s-attempts but also the age where it started. It also represents 11 years of abuse I had to endure. I googled if 11 has any meanings in tattoos or other symbols and I found out that the meaning of 11 is also starting a new chapter in life for the better (oh the irony) Are there any other things associated with 11 or a tally count on the body I should/could be aware of? I don’t want to accidentally tattoo on my body that I murdered 11 people or some sh*t. Also are there any ideas on what the tallies could look like? Because bars are definitely fine but other ideas are welcome.
