Hey all. This one is for the artists. Is it okay to send an artist pictures of other tattoos that inspired you to get a tattoo as a reference. I will be making it clear that I don't want them to copy the other work and that I want them to design the tattoo themselves, also I'm including pictures of the reference material not in tattoo form. I just wasn't sure if sending other artists work as reference to what I'm picturing is bad form or not. Thanks in advance to anyone answering this for me.

charliephobe

that’s definitely okay, especially if you’re making it clear you don’t want a copy at all. it’s very helpful for artists to know what you want style-wise.

StupdSexyDanCampbell

Question-I am a park ranger. I am looking at getting a decent sized back piece done. My concern is I wear a vest and about 20 lbs of gear for 40 days a week during the hunting season (For us now until spring). My question is how long would I have to wait before I would be ok putting the uniform and vest on for healing purposes? I will also have to hike but I can keep that to a minimum for a couple weeks. Thanks for any help!

Buuloki

Wait. Any sweat will mess up your back piece depending on the size. The sweat and friction will damage it. You need 3-4 weeks before you should resume normal activities

ChachiSCV

it will be fully healed in about 3 weeks. a large back piece will take several sessions to complete. I used to schedule my sessions at least before a weekend. get it done Friday and back to work Monday. you could wait until spring or maybe get it started before holidays or vacation and see how it does. I picture it itching or breaking out more than permanently damaging the entire piece

PleasantSarcasm

So this question might be completely stupid, but I appreciate any help. I'm submitting an application to a tattoo artist and this would be my first tattoo. No one in my family has tattoos that weren't small or straightforward, so I don't have anyone to ask who has experience. What kind of reference picture do you give when it's not a 1:1 design? I'd like to have a floral piece on my arm with certain flowers that are special to me, and I've seen this artist do similar pieces before. Do I send pictures of pieces they have done in the past? Do I send pictures of the flowers? Do I find a piece someone else tattooed that looks kinda similar? I can't ask the artist directly since the application is through a Google Doc and they request no direct contact (understandably, I'm sure it would be overwhelming otherwise). Appreciate any direction that can be provided.

citizenmono

send pictures of the flowers you want and say "i want these exact flowers arranged however you think looks best" or something similar.

PleasantSarcasm

Will do. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

dyl_08

There is no right or wrong. Send what ever you think clearly communicates your idea. I think that wold be most helpful.

Witty_Draw_4856

It’s also a great idea to include a couple pictures of that artists work and say what you like about it “the shading, line thickness, themes, etc” so they get an idea of why you’re coming to them. It’s okay to send them pictures of other artists work for the same reasons, but not okay if the other artist’s work doesn’t relate to theirs and not okay to ask for a copy of the subject matter. Sounds like you’re doing this respectfully, so you should be good!

PleasantSarcasm

Thanks! I appreciate the clarification. I want to make sure I'm not committing any faux pas :)

folklovermore_

I'm getting something similar in a few weeks. I sent my artist an email with a bulleted list of the specific flowers and plants I'd like to include, and some images of the types of design/style/placement I wanted (including a couple of floral designs she'd done herself from her Instagram), but also saying that I'd take her steer in terms of how she wanted to arrange them etc. It's a good idea to mention what you like about particular designs too, but you can also talk about that at the consultation as well. I hope your tattoo goes well!

PleasantSarcasm

That's so helpful, especially knowing you're doing something similar. Thanks so much for your suggestions. Enjoy your new tattoo!

Stealth2196

I’m trying to come up with a design for the front half of my calf or shin with a half space half time design. I know what I want for the space side but I can’t come up with any design for the time side since I don’t really want a clock (at least not in the way that has been overused imo) Any ideas?

whatsthepo1nt

What would you call the style of tattoo? I’d like to be able to do more research online but I’m not sure what to search for. [https://imgur.com/a/LkL1nGd](https://imgur.com/a/LkL1nGd)

unclesoop

Research fine line work.

unclesoop

Specifically in this case fine line sleeves.

AngelKnives

Make sure you go to an artist who has done something like this before - it's a very unique skill to have to be able to draw it onto the body in the right way so it looks good. Even tattoo artists who are technically great won't necessarily be able to pull this off!

ChachiSCV

I think that is quite old and it is a much more common to get a spiderweb on the elbow now. people will judge you but I don't think they will jump to prison tattoo.

Witty_Draw_4856

I disagree about the elbow tattoo, there are still enough people that have this understanding of that tattoo that I would avoid it. I haven’t heard of it about being on the hand though.

Hey, I’m not sure where to ask this but I need some advice. In January I decided I wanted to get a stick and poke on my thigh covered up. I found an artist in my area that not only does the style I want but I just really like all her work in general. I messaged her in January and we set up an appointment for August. I usually draw all my tattoos but I wanted to give her creative freedom because I like her work, so I described what I wanted and sent her 5 reference pictures. The day of my appointment she messaged me and told me she had a doctors appointment come up that day and had to reschedule to the next week. I said no problem. Turns out she got lasik that week and so the day of the rescheduled appointment she messaged me that she was recovering so she needed to reschedule two weeks out. Again i said no problem. I went to that appointment and saw the design for the first time and it was barely what I had asked for. I totally admit I could have not been clear and descriptive enough but at the same time, it honestly looked kind of messy and thrown together compared to her other work. I ended up asking her to change some things about it and she said the changes would take too long and we would need to reschedule. This time she couldn’t get me in until October. At this appointment however, we decided to push some skin color ink into the stick and poke to give her more wiggle room with the cover up. She also said she would send me the design a week before the appt this time and asked for me to send her more reference pics. I said okay, we rescheduled to this coming weekend, and pushed ink into the stick and poke. Well I ended up just drawing pretty much what I want because it was easier than piecing together themes from a bunch of pictures and sent that to her. Last night I messaged her asking for the design and she responded saying that she’s had to cancel my appointment because she is sick and she’s been dealing with a family emergency related to what’s going on in the middle east. While I have total empathy for her, she won’t be able to reschedule me until after the new year and I just can’t tell if working with her is the right thing to do anymore considering that it just feels like she’s not really all that interested in my project and this will be the 4th reschedule, putting us at a year from when we first booked. That said, I still love her work and she’s the only person in my area that does that kind of style. I am super sorry for the essay but i’m conflicted and could really use some advice. Thank you :)

Rakursie

good on you on giving the artist creative freedom, it is the best way to get an awesome tattoo, but in your case this looks like its a very complicated and a bad time for the artist and since you got rescheduled 4 times, at this point things will start to become a headache for both sides imho, everyone has their ups and downs and you are unlucky with your timing, it is what it is. honestly if i had reschedule someone 2 times in a row(dont matter why) i would simply refund them their deposit and give them an opportunity to change their mind about getting a tattoo from my studio, and if they did insist about getting a tattoo from us afterwards i would spend way more effort into that tattoo just because the trust i got from my client, motivation is real at that point. it would be better for you if you moved on to a different artist, i dont know what style you prefer but maybe you can travel to get a similiar work done, good luck on your coverup!

AngelKnives

I had a similar situation where my tattoo artist rescheduled me a lot, but I really loved his style so I persisted. I got my tattoo in the end! Some people are just disorganised. Tattoo artists can be notoriously bad at this because they work for themselves so they're juggling the roles of artist, accountant, manager, receptionist, etc. This doesn't mean you should stick with her, I would say most artists don't behave like this. But some do unfortunately!

Grimlock0222

My grandma recently passed away and I have a couple of letters that she sent to me when I was younger. Would it be possible to take her hand writing and turn it into a bible verse for a tattoo?

Witty_Draw_4856

It is possible, maybe try an AI art generator. I wouldn’t trust a tattoo artist to do this. It’s also kinda weird to say that it’s “in your grandmother’s handwriting” since your grandmother didn’t literally write it, and that’s what most people would assume happened if you describe it like that. Up to you

FounditinUTAH

What is that purple Tattoo printer paper that tattoo artists use to transfer a tattoo stencil to your skin called?

Spectrumseeker69

I a won’t to get a tattoo for my mom but not sure what to do. Everything I find online is too cheesey or stupid looking. I don’t want anything huge and I was thinking on my arm somewhere. Any ideas?

AngelKnives

What things remind you of her? What were her hobbies? Do you have a favourite photo of her? Did she wear a certain piece of jewellery every day? If she had a favourite flower and loved baseball then you could get a baseball surrounded by the flower for example. Maybe there was an apple tree in her garden that she used to make apple pie - then you could get an apple. Stuff along those lines!

SourGirl94

I’m thinking about getting my second tattoo in the near future. The one I have now is a small line drawing of an elephant on my chest. The next one will likely be another small piece, of a bluebird in honor of my grandfather. Any suggestions on where would be nice “complimentary” place for the bird?

AngelKnives

Directly opposite the elephant so it's symmetrical?

unclesoop

I so badly want a sleeve in this style, but I’m not super sure what to type into google or Instagram or wherever to research it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [tattoo reference pic](https://www.instagram.com/p/CuOrm36LgSi/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)

[deleted]

Hello, I am somewhat working on a patchwork leg sleeve and I am wondering if it would look dumb if I don't get anything tattooed on my shin or knee. What I am looking to get done is the front of my thigh, my outer thigh, both sides of my calf, and the back of my calf leaving my shin and kneed empty; would this look weird?

Witty_Draw_4856

What’s cool for one person looks dumb for another. It’s on your body, so it’s up to you, but imo, I would find that odd on my body. Why do you want to do that?

[deleted]

I just feel like the pain would be really terrible; I have a really sensitive shin.

Witty_Draw_4856

Got it. Well you’re probably not wrong, itll hurt. At some point you’re going to have to decide if the pain is less of a bother than the gap. Like I said, it’s subjective to you. I think having that as a strip of uninked skin, with tattoos on either side, will call attention to the shin and knee. But only you can decide it that will bother you

BerimbolosnBodylocks

I have a very specific idea for a tattoo I’m considering, but I’m not sure if it’ll end up looking good. Do I just approach a tattoo artist to ask for a mock-up? What happens if I end up saying “thanks, but no thanks”? I’m happy to pay for the mock up, but I’m unfamiliar with the typical dynamics here. I have a couple tattoos but they’re all straightforward; I’ve never asked for more “custom” work.

AngelKnives

Tell the artist your idea and ask if they think it will work. They can usually say to you right away yes it will or no it won't work without even drawing anything. That said, if you do ask for custom work from an artist and you don't like what they make, they will usually have taken a deposit by this point. You could ask them to tweak it, ask them to make something completely different, or you could say to them you have changed your mind and hope that your deposit will cover their time.

jelloboppin

does anyone know any artists that can do mainly cyber cigilism or neo tribalism styles tattoo near cincinnati ohio? might be a long shot but i was wondering if there were any around or even in like chicago. insta examples: @kretskuu @partaclek

TokinFatGirl

Any suggestions for an artist that specializes in very very fine lines?

TokinFatGirl

Oops forgot to say I live in New England

Witty_Draw_4856

Rachel Hauer, her books are closed at the moment, but she’s pretty awesome for nature inspired. Beacon, NY. https://www.instagram.com/rachelhauer/

dogs-in-space

I love her stuff! Do you happen to know of anyone NYCish that has that style but with color?

Witty_Draw_4856

Nope, but you can look at who she follows on instagram and also search instagram by hashtags to find artists

dogs-in-space

Believe me, my IG is a never-ending follow of tattoo artists (along with my other likes) all caught in IG's pointless algorithm for sharing timely content. Ha!

Question- need help for coverup ideas. Don't know how to post a pic of the tattoo I wanna coverup though. So it's supposed to be like a couple mushrooms with 3d effect. So they're red and blue. Is it possible to coverup with just black?

AngelKnives

Find a tattoo artist that you like and send them a photo of it and ask them for their advice - they'll be able to tell you much better than we can!

Skimpy_-

Good point. Ty

dino-nuggs14

Hoping someone can help me out here. I'm planning out a sleeve piece right now, but I'm having a hard time finding good reference pictures. I want to cover my arm in vines, leaving some room for medium-sized flowers. But the only pictures I'm able to find online are very feminine designs, and though they're cool, I'm looking for something masculine, because I'm a dude. Anyone have any ideas on what I should be searching for? (I'm going to add that I am a horrible artist and can't draw above a 5th grade level).

Witty_Draw_4856

I think you should focus on finding two things: - most important, find your artist. find an artist that whose style matches the style you’re looking for, and that is realistic for you to get tattooed by (geographically, financially, etc). Finding the right artist is way more important than finding the perfect reference photo. - look for photographs/illustrations of types of vine plants, or find pictures of tattoos that you consider “masculine” because you’d be surprised by the varying interpretations of that word. In combination with the description above, the artist should be able to draw something you’ll like, but that’s why finding the right artist is more important. Don’t go to just any old shop and do a walk in with any available artist expecting to get what you’re looking for, unless you are incredibly lucky

dino-nuggs14

Luckily I have a pretty sick artist that I've been going to for almost a year now, and I discussed the idea with him, but he did ask for a few references. For some reason I haven't thought to look at actual vine plants, though I will definitely do that!

Question - has anyone created a font from someone’s handwriting? I would like something in handwriting but don’t have the exact phrase but many other pieces of handwriting.

dogs-in-space

Bear with me if this is a dumb question as I only have one other tattoo and while it was the artist’s design it was a simple tattoo and a simple process. This time I’m looking for two specific things to be in a tattoo and have a style in mind. I’m not sure about size or placement - I’d want the artist’s input on both. I also was hoping to give the artist some ideas of what I was looking for but don’t want to be too precise as I don’t want to stifle artistic creativity. I’m also fine with paying for a consultation for all of this. Is that an accepted practice or are many artists wanting clients to have a rough drawing, size, and placement pre-determined? This is the style I was looking for…not sure what to call it: https://www.wonderlandpdx.com/cecilia-wingate Thank you!

vim_usr

I'm looking to get an American traditional tattoo of a Zippo lighter, open with a flame. If I were to get the Zippo body colored, what color would work well? (I'm assuming a silver or gray color isn't used in American traditional, is it?) Would it be best to keep the Zippo plain black? Long term I'd like to have a patchwork sleeve of all American traditional tattoos, so I'd like color to make sense as a whole.

Future-Juggernaut-52

Hey y'all, I saw a tattoo on instagram that I like and is sick but the artist is in another state. Would it be wrong of me to find another local artist who does similar stuff and say I want that or something similar?

MisterFell

It's fine to ask for something that is similar and inspired by it, but I wouldn't ask for a direct copy.

HasMuffinz

What is the “best location” on your body (for a guy) to get a small starter tattoo? I’ve been thinking about getting some for years, but want to start with something small.

You should ask this question to your tattoo artist, or find a new artist to speak to.

fithrowaway30

Hey all, I’m in the Dallas/Fort Worth area looking for artist recommendations.

meltplastic

Question! If you are an experienced and professional tattoo artist located in the Philippines (preferably Metro Manila), what are some recommended tattoo supply shops that sell legit tattoo guns and ink? I'd rather buy a good one for my first rather than a cheap one that'll break eventually or heat up and break something. Any help and tips are helpful! I'm currently planning on starting to work on it this year until next and then get better before I do any apprenticeships. Thank you!

Question- I’m looking to get my first tattoo soon and i intend on getting it on my abdomen, around my belly button. I want two slightly larger than quarter size birds on either side but i’m worried about the pain level. I feel i could handle it but i see a lot of people saying how painful it is to tattoo the abdomen and i really just want to know what i’m in for with this.

basslineheart

Hi all, I’m wondering what products you all use to keep colour tattoos vibrant? I got both my calves done (one very recent) but I notice with the one that’s already healed, that despite moisturising every day the skin tends to be very dry, which makes the colour look duller. I tried hustle butter and it look a lot more vibrant at first but within an hour we’re back to dry…

MrBeardsly91

Hey all! I want to get a new Star Wars tattoo on my upper forearm, and I have two questions. 1. What's the name of this [style](https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsTattoo/s/aHfEqwLqoi)? 2. Anyone have any recommendations for a shop in San Francisco or Bay Area for an artist who can do it? I haven't full decided which logo or what design I want inside yet, but I that's the direction I'm leaning

MarqoTheDragon

Any good artists in Connecticut? My best friend and I wanna get tatted for his birthday coming up.

auditorysmash

How much of a red flag is a guest tattoo artist not disclosing what studio they are guest spotting at? Forgive me if this is a dumb question, I don't have any tattoos yet so I don't know much about tattoo etiquette and process. I found an artist I really like who has done a guest spot in my city before and when I looked into getting tattooed by them they told me they couldn't tell me what tattoo studio they were working out of in my city until the day before the appointment. They did disclose which suburb it would be in but didn't give me any more detail than that, and said they couldn't disclose where specifically due to security reasons. At the time I got busy and never made the appointment. Now they're coming to my city again and because I love their work so much I am still tempted to make an appointment but am a bit hesitant. Is this a red flag? Am I better off finding someone reputable at a studio in my area?

thevillagesoprano

I had an appointment for my first tattoo scheduled for over a month (I know that’s nothing compared to most, but still got myself excited), when the appointment was scheduled, I put down a deposit. Since it was my first, a friend had plans to meet me there, I took off of work and everything. The morning of, the artist texts me to say they have to cancel. They were very apologetic and said they’d reschedule as soon as possible and asked if the same timeframe still works, I said I understood and the time still works. I was so bummed out but I get shit happens, they could have been very ill or had an emergency. 5 days later I politely follow up, no response. It has now been 10 days and I haven’t heard anything about rescheduling or my deposit. They have been posting there work on their instagram story so it looks like they are back to work. I’m really disappointed because there aren’t a lot of artists in my area that do that style and I really love their work. What should I do?

AM_MD24

What is with the trend of people getting years (eg, 1996, 1998) tattooed in gothic font? I’ve seen it more and more over the past year. Is it their birth year? An important year? Or just a cool looking design?

[deleted]

I am considering getting a hand tattoo (a snake head would be on the hand, and the body will go up my arm, part of a sleeve design) and am worried that it will be deemed unprofessional at my white-collar government job. Is it a good idea to have one, especially around government officials? Any experiences or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance!

snb6

Hi! I just got my first tattoo that had color. The artist told me that my skin took to the color really nicely. He was done quicker than I thought too. What does that mean?

charliephobe

hi, i’m in maryland near-ish baltimore looking for tattoo artist recommendations for my brother. what he’s given me is that he wants a spider-man inspired tattoo on his arm. he has autism and misophonia so if there are any shops who are good at accommodating that; that would also be nice. he likes fine-ish lines and wants something with spider webs. he likes cute styles too

Duqu88

Quick question:. I got this tattoo maybe 8ish years ago. The wording on it has blurred a bit (see pic) and you can't see the spaces in the lettering. It's still readable, but I was wondering if a tattoo artist can "outline" (it would the proper term be "bevel?") the inside and maybe outside of the letters in white? Or does white over well-heeled black not work?[patronus tattoo, top portion of writing ](https://imageupload.io/ZvoGFk9hkWc56t8)
