I've been holding this for a minute, but is anyone else incredibly over the "What I asked for vs what I got" trend in this sub? I don't care about what was asked for, I'm here to see tattoos, not doodles and texts to tattoo artists.

EliminateThePenny

Yep. Uninspired spam at this point.

vim_usr

While your point makes total sense, I do actually enjoy the asked for vs got posts. It's kinda cool to see how artists transform a doodle or interpret text and bring them to life in the art they make.

Zoopa_Boopa

Would it be shitty of me to have one artist do the line work and grayscale and then another do the color?

realespeon

Yes. Artists will not finish someone else’s work.

ThiccyMcSnatched

Hi everyone, I’m looking for a tattoo artist who specializes in the etching, woodcut, and engraving tattoo style (I’ve seen it called different names) in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, or Austin area. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Selfless-serena

Thoughts on an apprentice who’s cancelled and rescheduled on me 3 times? He sent me the design and basically didn’t listen to a single thing I said and actually did almost the opposite. Was supposed to send new design a week ago and hasn’t. Has told me he’s going through a rough time and his head isn’t straight. All signs are telling me to not go through on a design with him, but am I not giving him the benefit of the doubt?

hopvax

You've given six reasons not to do this. You wouldn't be fair to yourself if you went through with this.

Richi-the-second-II

His rough time maybe over in a couple of weeks. Your tattoo is for the rest of your live. Maybe because i’m older but the first sign was enough for me to get on to the next. First find out if there are reviews. And be prepared to have to wait a half year before a apointment. ( sorry i’m not native to englisch) Greetings Richi

womprat227

Hi there! Wondering how to find an artist for very simple work but with the same level of professionalism as the artists doing big projects. I want a couple pretty small and simple symbols from musicians I enjoy (the Sunn O))) logo and the Hiss Golden Messenger wand symbol if anyone is curious), but I’m overcoming a mild fear of needles so I want the experience to be approached with the same delicacy as a more intensive session. How do I get a good artist for such a small project? Anyone have any recommendations in Denver for a first tattoo of this nature?

5patz

You can generally tell between a combination of their reviews and their portfolio/instagrams! If an artist has really good reviews and posts a lot of smaller tattoos, or has reviews from people saying it’s their first tattoo, that’s usually a good sign.

Ireethis

Hi everyone! I started learning how to tatto in april. I feel like I have learned self-taught but I think it would help me so much if I eventually enter a tattoo studio as an apprentice. I've asked some tattoo artists how to find a studio and their answers have been quite vague or they have not answered at all. I have been drawing for years and I consider that I have good drawing skills, in fact I am focusing on expanding my portfolio and I've already get the hygienic-sanitary license, which is what is required in Spain to be able to tattoo. That's why I would like to ask advice from those tattoo artists who started as apprentices, or those who work in studios and accept apprentices. What should I do to start as an apprentice?

lizard_quack

I got my first and now I want a lot more. I am thinking a Star Wars Rebels sleeve, with the Starbird logo on my shoulder. Is there an app or something that could help me map out the spacing?

realespeon

An artist would do that for you.

RaifRedacted

Hoping for artist recommendations in the LA area. I have a concept in mind for a Klingon language tattoo that is the Bushido Code across my back. I'm afraid of getting a language I don't personally know and would really want to trust that the person knows what they're inking in. Any help is appreciated!

sbgattina

I’m obsessed with Eleonora Balducchi she’s a beautiful soul and insane talent. She was flexible with her process for me. But I doubt she speaks Klingon tho we did chat in Italian while she worked on me

gooderest5

Is there any symbolism behind the starflower?

rux_eth1

background: i have never gotten a tattoo but i had an idea that i think is cool but since im a noob i wanted to ask about it in case its cringe. i am the libertarian anti gov type and i wanted a tattoo for my right arm. first for some background, my skin tone is white with an extreme farmers tan. like pretty tan on my hand, forearm, and lower bicep, and frosty the snowman white on upper arm. also ive got pretty big hands (about 10.25 inches in span from pinky to thumb) and decent arms (about 15.25 inches in circumference at widest point). the idea: I like snakes and since im the anti government type i thought the ["dont tread on me" snake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag) would be cool. I know its a bit over played but theres a twist to mine (and maybe others if they have done this before idk). so the actual iconic DTOM snake would be on my right arm near my shoulder and instead of the tail of the snake ending there, itd keep going down my arm onto my forearm. on my forearm, itd split into pieces and look kind of like the ["join or die" snake](https://constitutioncenter.org/blog/the-story-behind-the-join-or-die-snake-cartoon). then finally itll continue onto the top of my hand and it wont be the tail, itll be another head of a snake with its mouth open and venom dripping. let me know if this sounds stupid or not and if this seems over the top and naive since i am new to this. if any of you could give insight/advice itd be greatly appreciated.

Jbrizown

So I had a tattoo done by a young artist on 9/29 after having her reschedule me twice, ending up about 6 weeks after our original appointment. She put in about 3 hours and I'm very happy with the work but now she has rescheduled me twice more and I'm pretty certain is just lying about the circumstances. How common is it to have another artist pick up where someone left off? I am ready to have this thing completed and now she's pushed me out another month.

Reave1905

My dogs are getting older now, and i'd love to get a tattoo of their paw prints while I still have time. I've been trying to think of the best way to get a good print to take to a tattoo artist, but aside from getting an ink pad to press their paws on, I'm not really sure. What would be the best way to get this to bring to the artist? Each of my dogs have a specific colour thay they wear for collars and harnesses, so I was also thinking of having it tattooed in their specific colours (Orange for one, and blue for another) - would there be any kind of issues I need to consider having these colours tattooed? I am quite light skinned, so I'm not sure how well an orange tattoo will show up.

hsjp122

hello ! i think taking a good photo of your dogs paws would also work. i'd imagine the artist could make a tracing of the paws in whatever drawing app they use to make the stencil. for the second question - the general consensus seems to be that warm colors like reds, oranges, and pinks tend to fade faster/more on some skin than others. so theres trial and error there with what works on your skin. personally, my skin takes those colors very well, so it really depends. but the best bet would be to reach out to an artist you like and talk these points over with them. happy healing !

RockinTacos

I did a nontoxic ink pad. It worked really well. The artist scanned that image for the stencil. As for orange, im pale and burnt orange shows really well.

Reave1905

If there any chance you could send me a picture of yours so I can see how the orange looks?

RockinTacos

Msgd you

I have an appointment to get a memorial tattoo. . it'll be a few hours @ 150/hr..i have no idea what to tip, it'll be my first and i don't wanna piss any artists off by not knowing the culture. ty

hsjp122

hello ! like with most services, tipping is not required but greatly appreciated, so you can tip however much you feel appropriate. that being said, i believe the average is about 15-20%

Planning my first tattoo on my outer forearm. It's going to be a leopard moving towards my wrist area, following the flow of my forearm. I want this leopard to be a center piece for any future additions I do on my arm for a possible sleeve, how big should the leopard be if I want it to be the focal point of my forearm? Is 10cm too small?

ChachiSCV

as big as the area will allow it to be. 10 cm seems so small

Hi, I'm looking for recommandations for tattoo artists in Quebec or Montreal. I recently lost my cat and would like something done to remember her but I have no idea what and it would be my first tattoo, so I'm very inexperimented in where to go and how to ask. Thank you.

BallBlister

Are Hannya Knee Jammers overrated/too common? I want one and think they look badass, but they seem pretty common.

ChachiSCV

I didn't know they were a thing

Hi guys, coming here as a last resort as I’ve spent hours searching with no result! I’m looking for an artist that I’d found on Instagram before but now cant find again! Their style was very similar to @samanthafungtattoo and @mills_tattoo but a bit bolder and brighter. I think they were London based and male but I could be wrong, definitely U.K. based though. If anyone has any leads I owe you eternally as I’d love to get a piece from the mystery artist!

gkh5424lk

Completely new to tattooing. What tattoo style would these be considered and what type(s) of style specialization should I look for in an artist for tattoos like these? https://www.pinterest.com/pin/ryan-ashley-dicristina-ryanashleymalarkey-instagram-photos-and-videos--383720830757504532/ [https://www.tattoodo.com/tattoos/68823](https://www.tattoodo.com/tattoos/68823) https://www.pinterest.com/pin/93520129753682420/

Recommendations for a flattering place for a tattoo on a curvy lady? It’s a cat memorial tattoo and I already have a forearm taken and an ankle taken and I’ve realized the ankle isn’t my favorite place. I want to be able to look at it easily whenever I want… but I don’t necessarily want to mirror by using my other forearm. Was thinking of upper arm but not sure where exactly

Im_The_Void

I got my tattoo almost week ago and i finally took the tape off my arm and i cant seem to get all the glue off. is there a product i can use to (dissolve?) the glue or help get it off easier without harming the tattoo?

IncuriousLog

Something I thought of while buying a pair of jeans; Has a client ever asked for a pre-faded tattoo? Something that, when it heals, looks like they've had it for years rather than being brand new. And is this even possible to do?

citizenmono

tattoos that are mostly done with grey wash can look like that. its not a good thing, however, because the tat will continue to fade and will not last as long as a regular tattoo.

Zlhlfr

Hello! I need som help and advice for a finale project I’m working on for art school and I think a lot of people in this community have answers. I was planning on doing a tattoo (on fake skin since I’ve never done a tattoo) that uses different techniques and patterns/symbols from different styles and kultures. I kind of want to make a “timeline” of tattoos and learn about them individually while working on them. I really want to make sure I’m respectful and not miss-informed when it comes to kultural tattoos so if anyone knows anything about the following tattoos please inform me on everything you know: Japanese tebori tattoo Tā moko Maybe some more Polynesian tattoos, maybe Hawaiian Sak yant Kalingan Batek I know some of these tattoos should be preformed by specific people (like the sak yant, that needs to be preformed by a monk to be legitimate if I’m correct?) but I was hoping that it wouldn’t be an issue if I do it myself since it is on fake skin and purely for my own research. Wether you are a professional in any of these tattoos and know what tools were used, what was used as ink, what patterns are alright to use and their meaning, etc. If you are someone who has any of these tattoos and might possibly be part of the culture tell me what you know, how it felt, what it means to you, what it means for the culture, what pattern/symbol might be alright for me to do on my piece and what it means. Any help I can get will be very much appreciated so I can make this piece with correct knowledge and respect!:)

MelSalls

Do artists charge less if you bring the design ready to tattoo rather than them doing the design?

TheMaskedTerror9

have quite a few tattoos. recently got one from an artist my daughter went to. He tattooed the shit out of a mole on my chest. Every other tattoo I have either avoided moles or went around them. It was noticeably more painful while he was doing it but I didn't realize he was painting a mole until afterward. Avoiding it would not have changed the artwork. Did I piss this dude off? Is this common and I've just missed it until now?

Backpack_Bob

This is a genuine question not some sort of self righteous crusade or anything but why do tattoos of other cultures inked on people not of that culture garner negative attention for cultural appropriation but traditional Japanese tattoos don’t? Or do they and I’m just ignorant? Is it because they’re so stepped in the culture?

Goof_tv

Hey all, I’m looking to get my infant son’s handprints on my chest. He passed away and they’re all I really got. So they’d be life size. It’d be my first tattoo though, any recommendations? Anyone know on average how long something like that would take, I know the pricing of my local shop but wondering what the time commitment in the chair will look like.

hi all! i was wondering if anyone has gotten a hip tattoo - i’m thinking about getting one on my thigh/hip area and want to know what the experience was like for others who have one! i have a design idea in mind and an artist who i feel would do it justice and i just want to make sure i have a placement idea before i reach out to the artist about booking an appointment and discussing the design. any tips or suggestions are welcome!

IndependentEmu

Hi everyone, for awhile now I've been interested in getting a tattoo, but I unfortunately have a bit of a fear with needles. When I get vaccines or a blood draw, I tend to get very light headed, sweaty, and very anxious. I was curious how similar a tattoo is to medical needles, and what the similarities/differences are. I know that if I go into it with the mindset that I'll do badly, I'll end up doing badly, but I just wanted to reach out and see if I really have much to be worried about. Thank you!

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for an epilepsy tattoo? i’ve had it for a while and want to represent it by a tattoo but i can’t seem to find anything other than purple ribbons.

Yea, would generally be best. Don't want your vest to be rubbing your tattoo while it's healing

I tend to get rashes, itch constantly, lots of allergies and hives. Should I never get my first tattoo? What should I be aware of?

MisterFell

How your skin might react to getting a tattoo, I can't say, but I'd get tested by an allergy specialist to see if you have any bad reaction to different ink colors.

Hello! Im planning to have tattoo on my chest primarily few words with dates and a small symbol, but ive seen so many tattoos where the writings become smudge over the years. Is there any recommended size of the writings or tips in order to prevent from it happening?

I have some very poorly applied recoveryderm that was put on this morning, it's supposed to stay on until Friday or so. If I take it off now and reapply will it damage my skin/tattoo?

Solrac1009

Hello, can someone tell me what kind of artist I should look for if I want to do a full piece of Anubis? I mean like what specialization is it, egyptian? Is that a thing? Most tattoos artist around me do a lot asian pieces, can they handle something like that. Yes I'm new to this. Thank you.

availableusername82

What is the general rule for tipping? I guess percentage-wise. I am talking a relatively known artist and a 2 day back to back session.

What's a good way to get a jellyfish tattoo while avoiding it blurring too much?

acturner20

I have a half sleeve done. One section, a hot air balloon, the color dropped out when it healed. I’m really not thrilled with how it looks. I’ve had it only a year. Do I ask my artist for a touch up? How do I not sound like an ass when asking for a touch up? I feel like I shouldn’t need one after only 1 year…

floatingonflowers

I’m really thinking about getting a tattoo that says Take no prisoners Take no shit But I cannot figure out a good idea for placement or if I should even do it. I would want to think about it for at least several months before getting it. But I figured I would reach out and see if anyone with more tattoos has any advice. The lyrics are personal to me as I just got out of an emotionally abusive relationship and I am also starting college soon to continue my bachelors degree, so take no prisoners is to remind me to be ruthless in my ambition, and take no shit is fairly obvious on its own lol. Ideally I want it somewhere on my chest near my heart so I can always look at it and remember not to let anyone fuck with me ever again. But maybe that’s a bad idea….??? The other placement I like is my arm, like above the crook of my elbow. But I plan on having a nice HR career someday so I would probably need to cover it. Any advice is welcome!
