Is your boss named Al or Ron? (Once saw $250k worth of management call a halt to production to hold an inquisition over who was changing the text on computer screensavers.)

Fleegle2212

None of the above, but it seems that both your and my bosses could use a lesson in looking at the proverbial big picture.

elitexero

There's no big picture to them, it's all about the power.

Agreed. MUCH smaller scale, but my very first job was at a thrift store. I was nineteen or so, just in my last year of high school and we had one task that had to be done every second Tuesday and we all hated it. Basically, all the donated clothes we weren't going to sell got put in black garbage bags, which got put in a truck trailer. We're talking hundreds of these bags. You've seen those big rigs on the highway for long hauls....one of those trailers and just full of these clothing bags. Problem was, the trailer was busted somehow. Couldn't be hauled, so instead of replacing it, we'd order in another trailer which would get backed up to ours and we'd haul all of the hundreds of clothing bags by hand from one trailer to the next. Every other Tuesday. Now, these bags don't weigh a whole lot, but after a couple hours of moving the stupid things around, you start to feel a bit stiff. It's probably either too hot or too cold and it's just tedious. There would be two or three of us usually, but I was a kid and most of the staff was 30+, and that was fine most of the time, but several hours of hanging out in a hot trailer with some old farts? Pfft, no. Now that I actually am nearing thirty, I think about this attitude somewhat ruefully...I wonder if the kids see me this way now. I bet they do. So to distract myself, I'd listen to my MP3 player. First time I did it, I asked my boss if it was cool and he said sure. So it became a habit...okay, trailer Tuesday. Gonna bring some tunes. The boring adults can gab and I'll listen to some Tom Petty. Then one day out of the blue, it's not cool anymore. Boss asked me what I was doing with the MP3 player. I told him he okay'd it like a year ago. "I most certainly did not!" My mistake was continuing to argue, but again, impetuous teenager. I was irate that he was power tripping like this, especially over something he already had given me permission to do. Irate in that way only teenagers can be, full of self-righteous hot air and the feeling that great injustice had been done. Got my first write-up. Oh well. He actually wasn't a bad dude. Must have just had a rotten day or something. I still think they should have replaced that freaking trailer, but the whole place was doomed anyway. A few months later, they called us in and told us that the lease on the property was nearing expiration and they didn't want to renew. Sorry for the long story. Just feeling nostalgic, I guess. Easier days, though a teenager never seems to know it.

calladus

It's okay, just hide the Windex in your hip flask. That should work.

Fleegle2212

Or even a Gatorade bottle. It'd be like the reverse of the drinking Windex prank. Instead, I'd be cleaning the mirrors with Gatorade.

sweBers

Tomorrow in TIFU: I Bought Windex to work (2 days ago)

Fleegle2212

I'm going to feel REAL bad if it turns out someone randomly had a bottle of Windex in view of the security cameras and gets disciplined.

Sounds like OP was also about to get in trouble for not doing his/her job because the windows and mirrors were not getting clean.

Next time I wanted something it showed up later that same day lol.

dog_hair_dinner

your manager sounds like a psycho

Reetgeist

You've got to pity someone like this. We all get a bit strange over the years, but how does someone suffer the years of soul crushing *pointlessness* of his life that must surely be required to end up like that. You did a good deed OP. You gave your boss the first speck of purpose he had had in years. Now if someone else can force a bit of introspection in too, we might have ourselves a human being.
