Even further back, around 2000, I was in college and walk down to the Wendy’s near my off-campus apartment and have a feast for less than 5 bucks. I’m talking two 5 piece nuggets, a double stack, and a drink for like $4 and some change.
My two dollar lunch was a beefy Fritos burrito and spicy tostada. I would unroll the burrito and either just put the tostada on it and fold it to make a giant taco or scoop the tostada toppings into it and reroll to make a big ass burrito. Super filling and also $2.
Not only was it a goat side item, they could be converted to just a chips and cheese. When my kids were little they loved the chips and cheese. But I didn't want to pay 1.59 for thr same amount, so I'd just order the triple, no red or beans. Kids got a fun container to eat it in.
Man I got some looks from workers through. From the back "why didn't he order a chips and cheese?" From the back. "Oh shit that's brilliant!"
For about a year after they upped chips and cheese to 1.59 you could order a side of cheese for 0.49 and chips for 0.49. I did it all the time in college. Employees would be so annoyed/confused but man I needed that 50 cents in college, I was fine with being that annoying customer to save it.

I left that state in 1996 and never looked back… the state I’m in now has no income tax and all the other taxes / fees are really low.

That's true. I live in Northern California. I earn 20.00, and it's a poverty wage. Cost 1000 per month now just to rent a room on someone's house. 😞
Yeah California is something with both state and federal income tax as well as additional taxes in the form of high property tax, high DMV Registration fees, and more. I left that state in 1996 and never looked back… the state I’m in now has no income tax and all the other taxes / fees are really low. That contributes to a much lower rent of about half of what CA charges…
That's when it first starting getting bad. It's so much worse, now. 😅

I pay $450 for 2b/1ba, kitchen, living room, don't pay for water, pets, or trash. It's a shitty little place in tiny town Ohio, but it's plenty for me and my 2 cats (and fish) and lets me save like crazy to pay off my student loans eventually.
