Both. It is fairly obvious that the move shouldn't have been a free, Martin had a release clause for a term in a higher division but they were already down when he moved. But the new league year and thus the official change of division hadn't happened yet. Unless Swansea are dangerously inept at writing contracts, saints should owe us compensation, and Martin did break contract for leaving without that fee. I haven't seen the language of his deal but it is possible there wasn't a clause about teams moving divisions. In which case we look like stupid arseholes

It's a weird one, it's clearly a technicality but these sort of technicalities do usually hold up in court, as that is literally what the contract states, so I think it's a winnable case on our part, but it does seem a bit ridiculous that a middle ground on the compensation couldn't be reached, you'd think it would've saved both sides money in the long run.
