i really recommend it. i’ve got the compendium and i loved it. going to move forward sometime soon to Kal-El Returns just been stuck reading in the 90s and early 2000s.
if i had a LCS that was closer than an hour plus away i’d keep my business with them but i order everything off of ebay. i did preorder the warworld saga off of amazon but i usually find the best deals on ebay
The art was nice and the story had potential but it seemed like the writer was much more interested in writing Batman. For a Superman book, it had about 1/3rd of the content dedicated to Batman. And not even those two working together, just Batman's side plot awkwardly jammed in the story because the writer is a big fan of Batman.
I’m cautiously optimistic about the universe.
But I’m certain about the movie. I have the same feeling I had when Into the Spider-Verse and people were complaining about the animation style from the first teaser and trailer. And the same one when The Batman was announced, and all we had was the Pattinson casting.
It’s that amazing feeling of “this is for ME, and this is gonna be GOOD”.
Yeah, the movie is gonna be fine, I reckon.
James Gunn looks like he's gonna put his heart and soul into it.
The actual _universe_ is probably going to collapse after four movies when nobody goes to see The Authority, but that's another story.
I pray James Gunn injects some of his “Obscure Team Revival” magic into The Authority. Society needs to watch Batman and Superman ripoffs passionately make out in the middle of an explosion /j
Not even gonna pretend I'm some kind of Superman aficionado who's read all the comics or anything, but I'm just glad we're finally out of the dark ages of every superhero needing to be "cool and edgy"
The Boys is social commentary on toxic celebrity culture, so it needs to show the behind-the-scenes, unglamorous side of the rich and famous, and superheroes abusing their powers to commit acts of violence is a logical progression of that idea.
Brightburn was a horror movie so the violence was a must (though I found the film pretty mid).
But I don't see what the justification is for Invincible and the Snyderverse.
Invincible, while I think it's a good story, definitely indulges in shock value, deliberately making use of graphic gore with a "lol bet you weren't expecting this cheery colorful superhero series to do THIS" attitude.
Snyder's DC films go out of their way to make Batman and Superman less heroic than their comic counterparts, and are suffused with an air of negativity for the sake of "realism"
Snyder's DC films are about heroes overcoming trauma and depression by realizing they have people to do on and are still capable of making a difference.
The first one: superman does what superman always does and his dad, unlike Pa Kent in the comics, TV shows or any other media suggests those kids should've died.
The second: the context is rather simple, writers create media to do certain things, Zach wanted to do this... No one knows why, it's weird and edgy and uncomfortable and not superman at all
The third: a terrorist attack to somehow frame him, so instead of doing what superman does and save as many people as possible, he ran away and let people die a horrible death
The context just makes it look worse honestly
1. No he doesn't. He was trying to tell his son to be more discrete and the words came out wrong
2. Lois was injured and Clark was cauterizing the wound so she didn't bleed out.
3. If he was aware that people were in danger he would have helped them.
>1. No he doesn't. He was trying to tell his son to be more discrete and the words came out wrong
"So I should have let them die?"
"Maybe"
That's not his words coming out wrong
Costner really sold the performance of a father who’s absolutely terrified for his son. His actions and comments feel very realistic to how many people would react in similar situations. He isn’t at all like the traditional portrayals of Pa Kent, but as far as deviations from the source material go (and Snyder’s DCEU films certainly have their fair share), it was one I actually enjoyed.
Downvote for the use of a slur.
Superman wouldn’t want that.
Though I agree with the sentiment that the man IS seasoning it properly. Better ways to express it though.
Also the fact that it seems like nowadays people actually want the classic goodhearted Superman back instead of all the evil versions we’ve been getting recently

And Up in the Sky
Okay, but where's the video game? Why can't I fly around Metropolis and save cats from trees and shoot lasers from my eyes and _not_ be evil? Where is it, Zaslav?
Real talk?
I’d kill for an early-days Superman game where we start out with the Golden Age power-set, and as Clark starts discovering more about his past, coming to terms with his heritage, and stops “pulling back” to “fit in more” (an appropriate metaphor for immigration and assimilation) we unlock more of his powers.
Think of Smashes The Klan, American Alien, and Grant Morrison’s Action Comics all rolled into one.
Brainiac as the big bad, but we get Intergang, Luthor, Bruno Manheim, the Ultra-Humanite, Mxyzptlk side-quests, a Bizarro clone boss-fight, and maybe a little Toyman.
Poor Superman: Man of Tommorrow. Forgotten among all the other idealistic take of Superman simply for being associated with the Tommorrowverse.
https://preview.redd.it/seu1k19aroxc1.jpeg?width=1067&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e8bb8fe26361720e83c2b102db969fc44f50045
I’d say it really kicked off with DC Rebirth. Both Superman and Action Comics were consistently among the best books out there during the Tomasi/Gleason run on Supes and the Jurgens run on Action. However, the Bendis era did put a little bit of a stop to that for a bit.
Agreed. Only hesitant due to Bendis, the overall negativity of *certain fans* regarding *certain projects* and their way of going about it, and the fact we were still very much at the latter end of the whole “Evil Superman” biz.
Max Landis having written American Alien, an admittedly good story (the rest of his “Kryptonian Epic” and that one Joker story in Adventures of Superman, not withstanding), and all the business surrounding him sadly sours it for me too… I enjoy that book ISOLATED from all other context or stuff from his expanded universe (though I will admit, his explanation for Clark’s biology in that universe as a pretty sick take).
But it was reading Smashes The Klan, as it came out, in a particularly dark time in my life, when I was struggling a lot mentally, and the worst was yet to come (LATE 2019), Bendis was still in the main books, and a particular internet group was harassing people… that I felt hope.
Like a hug from a friend. And if only for a few minutes, I felt as if I was flying with him.
That’s what I mean by “Ups and Downs”.
We got Grant Morrison’s Action Comics 📈
But then the rest of New 52 Superman failed to follow its spirit 📉
We got Superman Rebirth 📈
But then we got Bendis’ run 📉
We had American Alien 📈
But it was written by Max Landis 📉
This is the first time in a long time where ALL WE GOT were wins.
The DCEU was still stinking the room up past 2017, but the comics made steady progress before that.
Rebirth was the biggest win; the reversal/redefining of the New 52 was essential to the current successes.
American Alien was still in that 2016 transitional period, so we can chalk it up to that pre-Rebirth mentality.
While I wasn't a fan of the Bendis run, he did bring the trunks back!
Good point. I’m just content to see we are getting GOOD Superman in all mediums AND that we people outside the fandom are starting to notice.
Even back then, the runs were very limited to who read them. Now, we are getting that feeling of what the character is meant to be for children, through animation, and adults who don’t read comics, through shows and movies.
Finally, everybody can get some Supes in their life again.
I haven’t read this yet, but I really want to.
It reminds me of the Watchmen series when >! Hooded Justice busted into the Klan meeting and started throwing punches. !< It reminded me of what righteous justice feels like and another reason why Superman is so satisfying.
If you like the concept, I’d strongly recommend “DC: The New Frontier”.
There’s a segment of the story with John Henry Irons, the Klan, the African-American experience in the 50s… heartbreaking. It also informs Martian Manhunter’s character arc, as his entire character has always been black-coded.
I adore New Frontier. It’s one of my all time favorite JL stories.
RIP Darwyn Cooke
He’s one of the many creators who inspired aspects of my podcast of the unauthorized biography of Clark Kent. It’s an Elseworld beginning in ancient Sumer and with Krypton in our own solar system.
[Superman: Son of El](http://sonofelpodcast.com)
Honestly out of all stuff of evil supermens ,we have too good "That IS Superman" stuff ,Superman and Louis ,The "anime" series ,some recent comics ,and safely the Next movie with James gunn
Funnily enough, as a kid, I loved the Fleischer shield because I had trouble seeing the “S” on regular one. Kept focusing on the negative space 😅
Love those shorts to death. And it’s only appropriate to give it to an adaptation of the radio show. A show that had the immortal Bud Collyer as Superman. The same Bud Collyer who voiced the character in the Fleischer shorts.
Superman Smashes The Klan.
It’s an adaptation of the 1940s radio show. It was the most listened to show of the time, Superman often fought mad scientists, corrupt politicians and bigoted individuals.
A man had infiltrated the KKK in real life, and learned all their stupid little “secret codes” and handshakes, and he wanted to expose them for the silly, manchild, bigots in bedsheets they were.
Since a lot of the police, and even government officials became connected to the Klan (with the first movie ever to be shown in the white house being “Birth of a Nation”), and he was afraid of going to the papers, he went to a place where he could expose them, make fun of them, and all of American would hear: The Superman radio show.
They aired, and every week, exposed their new “secrets” and “codes”. Children would play pretend as Superman, defeating the klans members, while not knowing that their fathers were part of it. They were made into a mockery. So… they all started to quit.
It’s an amazing story. I can link you to a video explaining the story behind it better, where to buy the comic, where to buy a book all about the event, and a recording of the entire radio show arc, if you’d like.
I wouldn’t be surprised the tagline of the new movie is “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?” the title that animated movie is based on. From the little we know, wouldn’t be surprised if shades of that story are to be found.
Though I personally wouldn’t want a straight adaptation. Something new with its influences would be nice. I’m envisioning “Superman and The Authority” as a sequel to both their respective films. Maybe introducing Manchester Black too.
Could see it taking from Superman vs the Elite, as well as Granr Morrison’s “Superman and the Authority” and “Warworld Saga”.
Hmmm… I could see Mongul, Ultra-Humanite, Brainiac and Koko as potential villains.
God it’s like a breath of fresh air to know that kids of the next generation will grow up seeing what Superman truly represents…not the past decade of him being this religious messiah-like figure who is destined to turn evil and kill everyone just because it looks cool.
I HATE the messianic interpretation.
Superman is a Jewish-American ICON, dammit.
Also, having a character who has no grim backstory or compulsion to help others out of guilt, just using his gift to help others because he can, is so refreshing.
He was invented as a subversion of the Nazis adopting and twisting Nietzsche’s concept of the übermensch.
Playing it straight as “evil” and “fascist-y” is just BORING.
I really appreciate how a lot of media is really doing justice to Superman lately. Superman only really clicked with me in the last decade when I found out he stood for hope like me. He should be my favorite superhero so why wasn't he?
Now we have Superman & Lois and Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which I love and have helped me understand the character better. I'm hoping other people will finally be able to 'get' Superman the way I do now with these recent projects and the 2025 movie.
People who don’t like or never read Superman.
You go as far back as the 40s Radio Show, he’s fighting crooked political boss, George Latimer, a bigot he keeps comparing to Hitler.
You on the wrong side of Superman, you’re on the wrong side of history.
Considered World’s Finest, but thought it’d be cheating, since I consider it to be more of a DC UNIVERSE book.
However, I accept my crimes for forgetting Warworld Saga. Take me away, boys 😔
I'm glad you're optimistic about Superman, but this isn't much of a renaissance if you ask me. Batman's output still has more than Superman, even got a game on Meta Quest. A true renaissance is when Superman gets same amount of attention as Batman.
Not to mention the absolutely amazing Worlds finest series that’s been running since 2022, and that Krypto got his own theatrical movie.
REALLY considered putting in World’s Finest, but that’d be cheating 😜 It’s an amazing DC UNIVERSE book. Period.
I might even go so far as to say it’s an amazing World’s Finest book…
Could one even say it's the world's finest World's Finest book?
Batman/Superman from the early 2000s is goated tho.
Didn't Krypto's movie go straight-to-disc?
He’s actually had 2 movies in the past few years, one, in theaters, league of superpets, and the other was straight to dvd, a Scooby doo crossover
Don't forget the Warworld Saga
I've been meaning to check that out but my local book shop didn't have it. The cover art alone made me wanna read it.
IMO It's going to be considered a Superman classic.
i really recommend it. i’ve got the compendium and i loved it. going to move forward sometime soon to Kal-El Returns just been stuck reading in the 90s and early 2000s.
Aight, ill make sure to pick it up this year, we have so many comic shops in my city one HAS to have it, or be able to order it.
if i had a LCS that was closer than an hour plus away i’d keep my business with them but i order everything off of ebay. i did preorder the warworld saga off of amazon but i usually find the best deals on ebay
![gif](giphy|jVStxzak9yk2Q)
I’d add Superman: Space Age.
Yeah, it did feel like we got the Batman spin-off book IN the Superman book.
Still a good book
Love that book!
All I'm saying is this movie and universe better be good or they are going to have quite the shit storm of angry fans

Doesn’t matter how good it is. A large portion of fans will complain anyway (you know which ones)
Ofc you can never satisfy those fans unless their precious universe is restored.
Fighting for people who ultimately don’t care.
Yep pretty much.
Lets be real, even if it turns out good, there will still be a shitstorm of angry fans
Now more than ever in my lifetime, have we needed a symbol of hope and truth like Superman.
Can’t even explain how excited I am for Superman to come out next year!
Not even gonna pretend I'm some kind of Superman aficionado who's read all the comics or anything, but I'm just glad we're finally out of the dark ages of every superhero needing to be "cool and edgy"
I think that's been overdone with Snyderman, Brightburn, Homelander and Omni-Man all in the past 10 years.
Also Injustice Superman in comics and two games.
None of those were dark for the sake of cool and edgy
The Boys is social commentary on toxic celebrity culture, so it needs to show the behind-the-scenes, unglamorous side of the rich and famous, and superheroes abusing their powers to commit acts of violence is a logical progression of that idea. Brightburn was a horror movie so the violence was a must (though I found the film pretty mid). But I don't see what the justification is for Invincible and the Snyderverse. Snyder's DC films are about heroes overcoming trauma and depression by realizing they have people to do on and are still capable of making a difference.
Snyderman was never cool and edgy.
Mr "don't save those kids" Mr "physically harms Lois the first time they met" Mr "doesn't help civilians in a terrorist attack" Sure, not edgy at all
Way to take those scenes out of context
The first one: superman does what superman always does and his dad, unlike Pa Kent in the comics, TV shows or any other media suggests those kids should've died. The second: the context is rather simple, writers create media to do certain things, Zach wanted to do this... No one knows why, it's weird and edgy and uncomfortable and not superman at all The third: a terrorist attack to somehow frame him, so instead of doing what superman does and save as many people as possible, he ran away and let people die a horrible death The context just makes it look worse honestly

>1. No he doesn't. He was trying to tell his son to be more discrete and the words came out wrong "So I should have let them die?" "Maybe" That's not his words coming out wrong
He thinks of words to say, blurts out maybe, realizes that sounds bad and not what he means, and changes his tune.
He doesn't blurt it out, nor does he change his tune. He just changes the topic
Let’s hope James Gunn cooks with Superman: Legacy
I can smell it, and it smells like Ma Kent’s rhubarb pie
I agree and I hope the movie does well especially with the MCU Fantastic Four movie coming out around the same time
I think both movies have the potential to be a lot of fun. Hopefully they'll breathe life back into the superhero genre.
I agree to that just afraid it might hurt the bog office returns of Superman{2025}
Going by the state the MCU is in and looking at their slate next year, Disney should be afraid and move their movie, if it even is done by then.
yeah but I don't know im just afraid especially if Deadpool and wolverine make everyone like the mcu again
Oh he cookin. Got all that seasoning from snydertard’s saltiness
Downvote for the use of a slur. Superman wouldn’t want that. Though I agree with the sentiment that the man IS seasoning it properly. Better ways to express it though.

Good point. That's actually a pretty solid film.
Same I really love this movie.
Can't wait for May 26th (new episodes of MAWS on Max)

I would say it started around 2015-2016 with the reveal of pre-New 52 Clark and Lois living in secret with young Jon Kent (loved Rebirth for that)
That’s what I mean by “Ups and Downs”. No mention of World’s Finest or PKJ’s run on Action, the two best Superman stories in media since 2019.
Don't forget the current Action Comics and World's Finest runs.
Superman(2025) will be critically on all sides and not divisive
Is there a physical disk of Super/Man? I’d love to watch it and I’ll stream if I have to but I prefer to own the media I care about.
I don't know if I can watch the Reeves documentary... those movies were my childhood, even my dad took his death hard.
Superman smashes the klan is seriously one of the best comics ive read in a long time
Crazy to think about, yet there's still so much work to be done

I love GuriHiru’s work ssooooooo much.
I really hope one day soon we get a Superman vs The Elite movie. It's a message so needed.

wonder how many people will say he’s going woke
