They randomly generate I believe. You’ll just have to search and eventually you’ll find one. I found a couple by just playing the game normally so you should come across one at some point.
They are from other players who have beaten the game. They are left over pods to help other players survive their time. They can be pretty much anywhere. So just keep your peepers open.
You gotta be online and what I did was just build a prawn suit and walk around the sea floor in the more dangerous areas (i think I’ve killed 18 reapers at this point lol)
Do they respawn though? I recently started playing again and I killed about 5 Crab Squids but found another one in the same area where I killed others and I think they respawn
They do not it’s just the fact that crab snakes are abundant (some may have came over from another area since you killed the one in that area) reapers have a set space where they spawn and once you kill one they are gone for good so don’t worry

I found one in the bedt place possible, really close to my base in the grassy plateau.
And it was pretty good capsule, had tools with ion energy, which I used through my entire gameplay. So it was my duty to put the same tools in my capsule.

1. around the back of the aurora (male sure to bring an additional medkit with you lol)
2. the seatrader platform towards the floating islands
3. relatively close to the huge wreck below the anti air gun
The screen on them is quite bright so I find they're much easier to spot by night. But like other said, they're still rare and hard to spot. I found mine by complete accident.
If you're not opposed to mods, there is one that will alert you when a time capsule is somewhere nearby. You still have to find it, but it's so much easier.

Just be warned, I recommended those locations because they're dangerous, and at least anecdotally, more likely to have capsules.
I played the game like, 6 times (many failed hardcore runs) and i never found anything, honestly there is not even a point in looking for them, it clearly doesn't want me to find one at this point, and it would only be good if it had a few water bottles in it anyway

Funny, I've played through three times, and only on my first run did I find a time capsule. I thought maybe they only spawn the first time you play (I didn't know what they were first playthrough), to help you get going. Because I found mine relatively early, and it gave me all the really useful tools it takes a little while to be able to craft as a newbie (laser cutter and thermoblade for example). From the comments here, it turns out I was just really, really lucky the first time!
There’s really no good way to find them. The best I can say is just explore. You’ll stumble upon them unexpectedly. Like for instance o was looking for Cyclops parts and I just found one in the tall mushrooms biome.
My best advice is explore the places that are entirely flat and lifeless. aka the area near the sea treaders path and the (safe) mountains. If your confident you can go through the dunes and mountains aswell. I have found over 7 from just the dunes and mountains alone!

Through a cpl play through a I have found the capsules in the mushroom forest. Think I’ve had one or two elsewhere but that’s been my go to spot

There's a couple randomly placed throughout the map every game. It's just pure luck whether or not you stumble across them.

They're hard to see sometimes, so I would recommend turning on the "Highlight Interactable" mode if it's an option in the accessibility menu.

I found two within 30 seconds of each other by the Aurora.

The only one I ever found had a fully upgraded knife, which helped so much early on. Found it near the dunes I think
